FrozenMonkey 08-21-2011 10:35 PM

I bought it when it was 450. Worth it.

aigochamaloh 08-21-2011 10:40 PM

Thanks OP, stopping by Office Depot tmw to at least look at it.

maniwalaya 08-21-2011 11:52 PM

I don't think it comes with the $100 visa card... That promo ended a week ago at OD.

90% sure.

Check their weekly ad online $529 and it also said 'Bundle offer avail instore ONLY' -- must be $100 visa giftcard. This note is just for some specific laptop.

sorry so what does that mean? it is going to be 529 and no visa card offer? TIA

froogler 08-22-2011 01:54 AM

It should be a sin to put that resolution on T series.

Edit:my bad, thought it was T-Series, T420 with much better config is about $800 through affinity links.

damarcman 08-22-2011 01:55 AM

so anyone figure this out yet? i was going to get this at 450 and waited. 430 would be a steal!

rkdus 08-22-2011 02:52 AM

Guys, check it yourself tmr. I'll do the same.

I bought it two weeks back for $450. I will go to the store to get their low price guarantee today valid for 14 days after your purchase so you can save another $30.

dealapprentice 08-22-2011 07:38 AM

I doubt the giftcard is available with this model. All office depots have a big notice sign stuck next to the register with about 4 models which are priced $699 or higher qualifying for the gift card. Everyone who got the gift card including me the week of August 1st were lucky.

It is a sin! But this is the E series widely considered to be in a separate family from traditional thinkpads.

Regardless this laptop has a great keyboard and I find the aesthetics to be amazing. The only thing holding it back other than the plasticy build is the average screen quality. That being said - it's certainly built better than most.

At This price I would jump on it instantly if I had not used the 20% off laptops KSO two weeks ago.

Edit: it appears this configuration has a glossy screen and lacks bluetooth. bluetooth can be added by a new wireless card or dongle, but glossy screen would be too much for me on this system.

TL;DR: glossy screen thinkpad.

rustydud 08-22-2011 07:49 AM

How will this do as far as graphics go? Will it run the new Starcraft 2?

I purchased this model (1141-A24) a couple weeks ago from OD and it does not have a glossy screen. It also does have bluetooth built in.

Some weak points you may have read are true such as the battery does a loose fitment. If you press up on the battery, you can feel the looseness. Same goes for the dvd tray. If you don't press up on these two pieces, you don't notice it. It really doesn't bother me since I'm very happy with everything else about it.

my guy said he had to go check, he did, came back on the phone and said it ended last week. the week before last it was plain as day in their ad, this week it's not. Go try and buy... if you get it, great!

Not sure what the other guy is talking about. It doesn't have discreet graphics but HD 3000 is enough to run SC2 just fine. I've been running it EASILY for weeks now. I got it back on the last deal for 450.

Just picked up one with the $100 gift card with student ID. Also used the OfficeMax 10% off coupon to make the deal even sweeter. Came out to be $476.99+tax including the $100 gift card.

very slick. im considering selling the dm4 i got from the staples deal to get this one. comparable specs/same cpu but i like the aesthetic of the lenovo far more than the hp

I got mine last week too with the $100visa card. The one I got has very loose battery and high pitch noise (in a quiet environment). Went to exchange the laptop this sunday and got a price adjustment for new sale price. The battery still feel a little lose on the new one but way better than the first one, and the boot time and battery life seems better the first one too. I checked the battery capacity, both are the same. I guess my first one is a defective one. I am a little disappoint on the built quality, but this is the cheapest i5 for I had found.

pbk 08-22-2011 10:38 AM

The inventory checker is broken. It was broken last time this was front page. Call your local Office Depot with the item number and check if it is in stock. (it's ok to call because it's listed in their weekly ad) Just don't mention the gift card.

Same question - looking at the receipt posted a manager had to manually override the transaction for the $100 visa. So this is a YMMV deal

When I checked out today they asked if I was a student and then gave me the giftcard, I didn't have to ask or anything. There was a sign next to the display that said that it was eligible for the giftcard. I did try to price-match the Office Max coupon, but they wouldn't let me. They checked Office Max to see what the price was of the laptop and it was more expensive than Office Depot's so they wouldn't do it.

arjun312 08-22-2011 06:43 PM

My friend and I each snagged one for $410 after tax, coupon and GC. Thanks and repped.

How does this laptop compare to the Dell Inspiron 14r n4110?
Those are available in the dell outlet for about the same price after the 20% discount.
Specs seem similar. Wondering about build quality.

damarcman 08-22-2011 07:13 PM

got one! but the manager wouldn't honor the 10% so after some negotiation he gave me 5% extra.
so 505 plus tax minus 100gc. Thanks to previous people. the dude w/ the reciept on here... manager told me to have u buy me one for that price :)

JSON 08-22-2011 07:14 PM

I called ahead to a store that had 2 in stock...on my way there, some jackass bought both of them. So I had to race to another store 20 minutes away, got there 5 min after 9, but they were nice enough to let me buy it even though they were officially closed. Although, they were out of the Visa card, and wouldn't let me use the coupon. I know I can get the visa card tomorrow, but not sure if I can try another store and have them price match the coupon. Hmm....decisions

odd that the $100 GC deal varies from store to store...maybe depends on stores that have nearby universities/colleges?

IVIatticus 08-23-2011 09:09 AM

This is such a pain in the ass deal. Nobody has it in stock and nobody has heard of the giftcard deal.

djcheng 08-23-2011 09:58 AM

I picked one the last one at one of the Seattle stores last night. They let me use the 10% OM coupon and got the $100 visa gc as well. I'm not a big fan of the aesthetics of the laptop so I might consider returning it.

Gnomeslayer 08-23-2011 10:03 AM

teenbean 08-23-2011 10:22 AM

Had my sister pick one up yesterday, she was able to use the coupon and got the $100 gift card. Great deal!

dealapprentice 08-23-2011 11:33 AM

Is the $100 gift card advertised in the weekly circular like two weeks back? I dont see it in our weekly circular.

Marshdale 08-23-2011 05:44 PM

In Knoxville, TN, Office Depot has four or five different laptops offering the $100 Visa this week, and this Lenovo E420 is specifically listed as one.

I am tempted to buy the Asus U46E which is onsale again for $649, but no Visa Card this week. I'm hoping they offer that promo again soon.

rmcv123 08-23-2011 05:53 PM

I exchanged the e420 during the weekend due to high pitch noise. The new one still has the same problem. it gets annoying when use the laptop at night. Can't return to OD since it's open. This is my first lenovo and probably last lenovo laptop. May have to sell it if I can get over the noise. Google the high pitch, it seems a common problem for Lenovo laptop. The noise can be solve by disable the CPU power saving feature but that leave the laptop to 1-2 hr use on battery. The laptop is fast with i5 and for under 450, it pretty good deal. very want to keep the laptop, but the high pitch noise drives me nuts... I am wonder who else (e420 owner) has same issue..

Bought mine on the 10th for $550 + $100 visa gift card. I've yet to open it so I gotta decide tomorrow (14th day). May try and have them price adjust it and possibly apply the %10 off coupon. Fingers crossed.

Lenovo bought out the IBM manufacturing plant if I recall correctly, their laptops are built like tanks, very high quality.

Highly recommended.

Managed to pick one of these up today. When I asked about the Visa promotion they told me I needed to buy Microsoft Office for $99 to get the card, but when I went in they let me get it for free. For some reason the laptop was listed at $699, but it rang up at $529. Had no problems with this, got lucky indeed :D

short answer is they are built real well, mainly the Thinkpads are. Not all thinkpads are equel as far as strength and durability, but they all share common tech to make them more durable. This one had for instance the spill resistant keyboard... Also from the little I played with it so far, they have some nice software built in to check for updates and to make sure hardware is working properly. If you can snag one at these prices and you need a powerful laptop, i'd say this is a great buy. Try and find another i5 14in out there for 450ish... Good luck!

This is a problem beyond any single manufacturer. I have the same problem with my Gateway core i5 laptop as well. Some speculate that it may be a cpu/motherboard voltage regulation problem. Some vocal macbook owners even posted youtube videos of the problem a few years back. So it's definitely something that's rampant with most laptops.

Im personally using X220. The best laptop I've used so far (I change my laptop after months)

did a little more research. from the lenovo forum, someone mention that the noise(whine) gets louder with wireless mouse adapter plug in, I realized I had a min-wireless mouse plug on the left side of the usb. I shut down the laptop, pull out the wireless mouse usb adapter, wait a couple min, reboot the computer. Well, surprise, the noise level went down about half. If I put my ear next the top left side of the laptop, I still can hear the whine(noise), but it is much tolerable when I move my ear away and use the laptop like normal position. Still hear the noise sometimes, but it not that noticeable. I think I will keep the laptop, I got it for $430 (after tax and gift card), have not found any better deal for an i5. I probably try a usb wire mouse and see that make a difference.

What if you don't have a student ID?

Yeah, they gave me the gift card, no problems at all.

Pretty happy with the laptop too, I'm a big fan of the little nipple mouse pointer that Thinkpads have.

You will need to find a friend who has one.

Bought mine on the 10th for $550 + $100 visa gift card. I've yet to open it so I gotta decide tomorrow (14th day). May try and have them price adjust it and possibly apply the %10 off coupon. Fingers crossed.

I had bought it on 08/09 for $549 + $100 visa gift card just like you. On 08/22 I went to the store to price match to the lower advertised price of $529 and saved $20. Yesterday 08/23 being the 14th day for price match guarantee went to store again with the two receipts scan on this thread. The manager first said he cant do it as it is $529 in their system. I explained the additional 10% is coming from OfficeMax coupon match and he was nice enough to give the 10% off $529 which saved me another $53 + taxes($4).
Thanks & reps to all the folks who have scanned the receipts and attached to the thread which was very helpful. Not every store honors price match. I had to go to three stores and finally the third store honored the price match.

Also for Office depot dont rely on their online inventory which is not accurate. Call the local store and ask for item lookup to find stores in your area. You may have to try every fews days as different stores get inventory from their local warehouse.

I agree, I think it's an amazing deal for those who got it...but probably not FP because most people seem to be having difficulties with it.

GamerDad09 08-24-2011 11:11 AM

Even without the $100 gift card the price isn't bad for an e420 with an i5 processor. Couldn't find any in the Houston area so I ordered one online.

Thanks OP!

For people has high pitch noise, my earlier post indicate the if you have wireless mouse adapter plug in the usb, that will increase the noise. Beside that, I also read about using firefox or google chrome can also cause the noise. Firefox is my default browser, after I read it from the lenovo form, I quit the firefox, the noise does go away. I also try the chrome browser. In summary, for my laptop, the noise got "eliminated" by no wireless mouse, no firefox or chrome. IE or opera seems fine. Those measure may not work with all laptop with such high pitch noise, but they seems works with my(when is on battery, no problem with ac). Ooh, I still get the hard drive and fan noise which is tolerable. Don't think lenovo has a real solution to this weird issue.

iKnuckles 08-24-2011 01:53 PM

Can anyone confirm whether it's a glossy screen or not? I've been reading mixed things on this thread.

Repped.

So how did you guys get OD to PM to the price with the coupon? I just tried and they said that they will only give me the price if i had the coupon.

KitchenPC 08-24-2011 07:53 PM

student id= college id?

GIRay 08-24-2011 10:33 PM

Intel graphics + Lenovo = crap

DrMacchio 08-24-2011 11:34 PM

Thank you for those who posted the receipts. Used them both to price adjust mine today (on final day 14 of purchase) down to $478 (or whatever). + keeping the $100 visa card.

Like was said by others earlier had to go to several stores. First two told me hell no...they'd lose their jobs. Third store manager was the best, very courteous and gave the adjustment right away, no questions asked...dunno if he even really looked at the receipts. And he really wanted to make sure there were no probs with the visa card "come back if for any reason it doesn't work...we'll give you another."

FYI: Manager told me the student $100 visa goes till september but he had to ask around to confirm that first. Make sure to ask if they don't know.

Came with two 2 gig sticks of RAM so I had to use my full 2 x 4 gig sticks from newegg for a total of 8. This thing is awesome so far.

When I got home I had two shipping confirmations on 16 & 32 gig HP touchpads from Amazon OnSale.

Best SD day ever!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm going to have to block this site for the next two months before I go broke.

robbierob 08-25-2011 05:03 AM

Is there anyway to order online and get the $100 visa card? No store within 50 miles of me shows it as in stock :(

DrMacchio 08-25-2011 07:38 AM

Call the store, the OD stock checker online has been wrong almost every time.

Thanks, but that's what I did and got the same information that was online. So my question stands, anyway to buy it online and get the $100 visa card? At $430 the computer is a great deal, at $530 not so much.

It's still a decent deal without the GC at $530, but if you can find one locally and get the card or even the office upgrade it only makes it sweeter. An e420 w/ i5 processor costs over $650-$750 at most other online retailers. I called 8 OD stores in the Houston area and none had it either, a few told me it was an online exclusive.

Haven't used my wireless mouse yet but go into bios and disable cpu power management, reboot and see if that helps.

Please let me know as I am planning to go for price adjustment as today is my 14th day.

Just take the printed copy of scanned receipts and take to the store and ask for low price match guarantee. You may have to go to several stores till you find a manager who would accept it. Also if they ask how it is $476 you can explain its 10% off from Officemax competitor coupon which brings the price down from $529 to $476 ($529-$52.9 =$476).

Because the coupon expiration date isn't listed on the receipt, duh.

mberr 08-25-2011 09:46 PM

fark I went to 3 OD.

they said that they would match the OM coupon IF it was still current. I showed them the two receipts and they won't accept that as proof. The SDer that bought the laptop in LA is maybe close enough that I could go to the same store.

what would happen if I try to photoshop a different date??

Go for it. That would have been my next game plan had not the third store worked out.

The expiration date on the office max coupon is listed on the coupon as 8/22 and actually that is why the first store rejected my request. I think you could photoshop that as well.

They have no way of checking what the legit dates are on the receipts or the coupon.

A bit dishonest but hey....

KitchenPC 08-26-2011 03:33 PM

Finally got the laptop, the manager didn't take the coupon (Officemax $10 off $40) since they don't accept competitor's coupons on technology. Bummer...

ZeroSyztem 08-27-2011 03:47 PM

no dice getting the lower price with the receipt. Will try again tomorrow.

GamerDad09 08-28-2011 08:10 AM

Deal is dead, only on sale for $50 off the $700 price this week.

djcheng 09-01-2011 06:01 PM

i decided i'm going to return mine so if anyone wants it from seattle let me know asap! got it for just under $450

Deal is going on until Office Depot closes today

BobbyA 09-17-2011 05:59 PM

Screw the $100 gift cards. They cost $7 me in tax for the $100 inflated price to cover the GC.
Just lower the price by $100 for whatever days it will be on sale.
I'm not buying.
