To anyone still reading this -- the quality of the particle board is hardly the problem. If you choose the stacked orientation (and I'm assuming that's 90-95% of our plans) then the only thing keeping the top legs from suddenly slipping 2cm to the top of the linking keyhole is the angle-iron of the top legs perfectly mating the angle-iron of the bottom. There are various mechanical ways to prevent this, but it's among the most absurd design flaws I've ever seen in "heavy duty" anything. Pick up ANYTHING from walmart and it'll have some system in place to keep this from happening.

10-31-11 UPDATELast day to get this deal. You have to go to your nearest ACE B&M store and get them to make a 'SO' or special order. You can either make a deposit or pay in full (at the discountred $29.99 rate) and they'll set it aside on the next delivery. Pretty sweet huh?!

I stopped by my store today and they had none in, but offered to special order it for me. So it doesnt matter if it is ONLINE or INSTOCK B&M

These are VERY light duty shelving units with 3/8" particle board shelves. Are they worth $30? Yes, but don't count on them holding any real weight

Let's say 1/2 of that at 100 lbs per shelf then. Sounds like "real weight" to me. Hell, 50lbs per shelf is allot. What do you plan on storing on these, lead bars?

Nathan0490 10-01-2011 02:39 PM

Thanks Brisar :)

Umm. These shelfs are plenty sturdy. Mdf is fine for this, that is a long as it dosent get wet. They are fairly small so yes this would support 200 lbs. If ur that worried abt it u can replace the shelves with plywood.

Hey! It says can be assembeled as a shelf or workbench! Thats definnitly a plus!

tstarks420 10-01-2011 02:49 PM

Just spread your crap out, heaviest stuff out towards the edges, these hold just fine.

BarryT82 10-01-2011 02:54 PM

I got the one from Lowe's for free when I bought some cleaning supplies. The shelves are bowed and breaking with about 100 lbs on each shelf.

kasedian 10-01-2011 03:10 PM

Whoa. I was just about to buy this, but the lead bars that I will be storing on it are 205 pounds. I guess I'll keep looking.....

Good deal, I bought this exact shelf over a year ago for the same price after rebate when it was featured here.
Once it is all put together it is surprisingly sturdy. The max weight per shelf may be exaggerated but realistically who needs it that high? Ignore all the naysayers.

I said I think they are worth the $30. It's just a warning that over time these shelves WILL start to deflect and fail if you have a load that is not very even. If you store half a dozen paint cans on them(50 lbs), you will have a problem over time. I did buy a couple of them about a year ago for my dad to get a few light weigh items off of the floor and they work OK for that.

The specs say 200 lb evenly distributed load. That is probably true, but I have also seen a car balanced on 4 beer cans before. They probably should not use a photo that has the heaviest loaded shelf with maybe 15 pounds on it.

I've got a shelf unit that is made of even cheaper stuff than this and it has held up 20 years with paint, power tools, regular tools etc. on it. Just don't get this wet with the particle board as stated earlier and it should last just as long, if not longer.

figure8 10-01-2011 03:35 PM

are these made by the same guys that make gorilla glue? i'm not buying it either way, but that would be awesome. i want shelves for my glue.

defbrizzo 10-01-2011 03:42 PM

If you get them wet or store anything that sweats with temp changes they will fail quick. One winter and mine collapsed in the garage and DENTED MY MUSTANG! Grrrrr

I will be placing my Gold bars on them:) LOL

I bought some Rubbermaid shelves that were around this price and they don't even hold 30lbs.

I would say this was a good deal.

jdr-eza 10-01-2011 04:08 PM

we have them at work, perfect for cardboard boxes and plastic bags.... don't get them wet... seriously

once assembled... don't move it or it'll fall apart or warp

they are shallow, short, and not even a full 24" wide... which makes them ALMOST pointless to own unless you don't have the square footage for a real shelf.

Core2Quad 10-01-2011 04:14 PM

Costco has some great racks that are about double this size, and much better built for about $60 (I have 3 of them) They are rated for 500lbs per shelf, and I believe it will hold that much.

sleeping 10-01-2011 04:16 PM

Thanks OP, was looking for a nice set of racks.

That's interesting; the shelves I'd gotten last time are 12 gauge steel with 1/3" rivets. I replaced the shelves with 3/8" plywood and store hundreds of pounds of tools and engine parts on them all day long.

What buy some Windex and get a free gorilla shelf unit? Please explain.....

acteg 10-01-2011 05:39 PM

The particle board shelves will flex/bow over time. I recommend picking up some plywood from lowes and have it cut to fit. It will only cost you a few bucks. I have 2 of these shelves.

halzeimers 10-01-2011 05:54 PM

I suggest getting gorilla racks.
I have 5 of them in a basement corner.
I built the short version into the corner using 2 of them and then
built the other 3 as the tall version. Works wonders and stores
a bunch of stuff.

I bet building my own wood shelving units would cost more plus
the GRs go together in minutes.

Besides, how much does all your discards really weigh?
These should hold common househod junk piles.

Pinkbullet3 10-01-2011 05:55 PM

Slow day today?

Muckrak3r 10-01-2011 06:06 PM

Right now I only have 1 really crapola level shelf system out in my garage. The "poles" are made from cheap plastic and the "shelves" are made from cheap-o particle board. Not just regular particle board.

I have had it for over 5 years, store all kinds of paint, chemicals, tools, toolboxes, etc. on it. You just have to be smart. Put the absolute heaviest stuff on the lowest shelf, and put heavy items on the other shelves towards the poles. Common sense.

Long story short, these shelves will be more than enough for me to finally clean up all the random crap in my garage and throughout the house. If for some reason it seems the shelves won't be sturdy enough, it won't be a problem to run down to Lowe's and have them cut a few pieces of plywood for a couple bucks. Thumbs/Reps. I picked up 2 for a bit over $60 with tax. Was just about to buy a saw and a butt load of lumber and get started on building my own shelves. Hooray for SD!

Seylerc 10-01-2011 06:15 PM

These are a great deal at this price. I have a set of the 48" wide ones I got years ago and have put car batteries, tool boxes, even a 55 gallon full fish tank on them (just doubled the boards for the tank). They are tough and sturdy. If I hadn't just made home-built garage shelving, I would definitely be buying more of these.

Thanks OP, recommending these for some friends right now.

I got 3 or 4 of these last year and love them. When putting them together, they were flimsier (is that even a word?) than I expected. Once assembled, however, they are surprisingly strong. I keep paint and paint supplies on one and it has held up nicely. They also work beautifully with 6Q shoe boxes that you can find at Kroger or Big Lots for a $1 a piece:

shawnlewis 10-01-2011 06:22 PM

It didn't have HDMI, couldn't play SC2 or crysis on high settings, and didn't involve flipping it on ebay for vast amounts of cash, so I figured I could wait a bit before trying to buy one. I never would have guessed it would sell out so fast. : (

Will be visiting my local Ace first time since we moved. I need several of these.

As for the heavy-duty discussion goes: Actually I prefer them to be somewhat light-duty, because that's how I will use them and I wouldn't want to pay for something I don't need.

RVD26 10-01-2011 10:22 PM

I have this in my garage from the deal last year.
It's help up very well since then and for $30, it's a good deal.
I don't have any really heavy items on the shelf so I can't comment on that.
If you plan on putting 200lb + stuff on the racks, you should probably be paying for something a lot more expensive than this.

tvip 10-02-2011 12:28 AM

I love gorillaracks. Have 5 of the slightly heavier-duty 18" x 36" in my garage, and those can easily support whatever i put on them. 24 x 12-packs of soda on 1 shelf? No problem and those things are heavy! I've had 2-3 other brands of steel & particleboard shelving units, and gorillarack is the only brand that was worth a damn.

I picked up the only 2 at the Odenton, MD store this morning, not the sturdiest but will help organize all the random stuff in my garage! I'll probably get a sheet of thicker plywood in the future to replace the particle board shelves, but for $30 you can't go wrong! I thought it was easy to assemble, only took me about 10-15 minutes and I did it my myself.

you must have a defect.

I put together 4 of them with no problems and for my use they are perfect and well worth the money.

My local ACE had about a dozen of these at $30. Picked one up for the garage. Took about 30 mins for me to put it together by myself, probably would've been 10 mins if I had an extra set of hands to help hold stuff. Looks good and sturdy enough for my purposes.

obviously bobma, you are one slick (and quick) dude. but i really think there's no reason to get personal (and a little defensive) over a cheap, wobbly little storage rack. was just stating my personal experience with the product and a point of view. i admitted i'm a bit of a klutz (and may not be the only one). i'm delighted you are not.

Wash them off with 1/2 bleach, 1/2 hot water formula. Use very little. when the mold dissapears (probably several applications) and they are completely dry you can try painting them or anything else that will be a moisture barrier (wax, polyurethane etc.).
Or, move them out of your basement, or use a dehumidifier in your basement.

I've taken this home in a camry, not sure about the civic, but you can always open the box and put the contents in the car.

Thank God, someone with a reasonable response as to why not to buy this.

FYI, not the sturdiest (I have mine anchored to the ceiling joist in the basement just in case), but really, I have over 100 lbs on each shelf, no bending in 4 years, everything is good. Gorilla, maybe not, maybe more like baby gorilla, but still good value for money.

it's designed to be used upright or as a long or L shaped work bench-cutting in half should be no prob

We use these for parts storage at a truck repair shop. These are really good quality. We hold water pumps, bearings, wheel seals, filters, and many other parts. We have about 15 of these. I would recommend these to people.

EDIT: I may be talking about a different size... All I know it is a gorilla rack. I don't know if they make different quality for different sizes, but like I said before. I would recommend it.

These shelves are pretty flimsy, and they're definitely never meant to be taken down and moved. I moved mine once and it was a little messed up, the second time I just threw them out since it wasn't worth the hassle.

I'm not saying they're a bad deal at the price, but know the cons. I much prefer plastic shelves in the super cheapo garage shelving market.

Yes. You don't have to cut anything. You can set it up as two 3ft sections as is.

Wow. You don't do much home improvement stuff do ya? Honestly, the most time consuming part is taking it out of the packaging.

You say this stuff is in your shed and looking nice but you wouldn't recommend it. That is such an odd way to review a product.

This product is not an easy installation -- especially to connect top n bottom ..worst connection method...EDSAL brand is way better than this..
$30 is waste compared to EDSAL 54X24X72 came for around $40 at lowes recently...

nycdude 10-05-2011 06:17 AM

jsullivanj 10-05-2011 06:36 AM

My 2 cents. The shelves are supported almost 100% around the edge, the boards drop onto metal frame with a lip all the way around. That is what helps hold the weight (200 lbs). That being said, they are particle board shelves, so they will warp, twist, sag after years of humidity and moisture.
Def worth $30 to put stuff on for a normal home owner.

thumper300zx 10-05-2011 06:46 AM

These shelves will to just fine as long as you aren't storing your transmissions and engines on them.

dooboo 10-05-2011 06:52 AM

Ahh...brings back the memory from the Sears chaos deals...where I ended up paying like $10 per selves...which involved writing complaints to the BBB, money back while keeping the shelves for some reason, etc...It was about a 1 month long process, however, I guess it was worth it.

It is pretty good shelves for the money.

Good luck to those who got on the deal.

SlyMonster 10-05-2011 04:14 PM

Thanks OP.

I'm going to my local store and buying three of them for my 12 year old's bedroom. Then paint the shelves black, line them up on one wall (attach them to the wall and each other) for his models, x-box, and matching storage boxes for his clothes (neon green rubbermaid?). I'm thinking Ikea wannabe look with a new black futon.

Still working on the finished look... hmm

Does anyone understand the workbench set up?

htcsir 10-06-2011 10:45 PM

In for 1. Got the last one at my local store. This is a month long promotion, so they should be constantly restocking. Good luck.

The box is approximately 36x15 inch. You can fit in the trunk of mid size sedan like corolla or in the rear seat. But the box is heavy

When does the promotion end?

You place it on its side and the MDF shelving works as top and bottom shelves.

Hey, DIY'ers: I need something about 10" less wide. Can the MDF simply be cut or are there metal cross supports that must also be shortened? Anyone?

I would like to purchase these but the 6ft total height is a little too tall for my pantry in my kitchen. Anyone know if I could cut it in half and just use it as two shelves in two sections or is that too much work? Thanks! TU

OOS right now for me, oh well, I'm guessing at least a couple people were able to cash in on this again?

Boo, only 200 pounds per shelf. Whenever I see something with a weight limit I stay below 50%.

You have it backwards. If you see a weight limit you can usually go over it by almost 50%.

I think it is because the racks were out of stock, so the deal expired; now they are back in stock, deal back.

g0dM@n 10-07-2011 05:34 AM

Perfect! My gorilla needed breast implants but I think a replacement rack will do for her...

spdrcr 10-07-2011 05:37 AM

OOS online for me, but my local store is running the same price and had plenty in stock.

But that happens a lot example is the HP tablets I think they were called. The $99 ones, you just had to keep updated who had them in stock by watching that thread. Im sure there are tons of others examples as well...I just found it odd it was fp again...never seen that myself.

Either way its OOS for me.

Good Deal!

welfaric 10-07-2011 06:26 AM

Get a rain check

My local ACE said I could get a rain check the GR is on sale all month.

chrispy442 10-07-2011 06:37 AM

I just went down and picked one of these up at a local store, all the ones in town had stock of them. Great price, not a perfect shelf, but for the price it is great. I have a space in a storage area that is 34 inches by 14.5 inches, so this was clearly a perfect fit. The box it comes in is pretty small, so easy to get in any car. The only thing I regret it maybe not getting two, I'm sure I could find a use for another. I might replace the shelves with regular plywood as I have extra.....

kreation 10-07-2011 08:06 AM

in for 5 units, but canceled 1 unit because ACE does not take gift card online order and does not accept coupon. Buying these shelf for my garage so that I don't have to build one myself. May be, adding wheels on bottom shelf for easy moving around.

Just picked up four sets from my local Ace. I'd also love to know what wheels you're putting on these!
