Make a charge at a small business on November 26, 2011 and American Express will give you a $25.00 statement credit.

wikipost 10-06-2011 05:49 PM

This post can and should be edited by users like you :)

We should summarized all these info for next year. All the possible way to do this deal. If AMAX is not wise up before that. Saw a post that said he did it 28 times, not sure how.

Open a small business and become your own customer.. takes just minutes: squareup dot com (need iphone/android phone) (Hey "ashwinkumara", you are clearly a troll, so stay away instead of removing useful info from wiki)

Do not forget to check in with foursquare app, there's another $25 for that :)

One credit per REGISTERED card. The FB search results do NOT necessarily reflect qualifying stores....some large retailers and businesses that do not accept AMEX are among the results given.

Dead if you haven't signed up (Link [americanexpress.com]) already.

FYI, everyone. IF you've already registered your card, the confirmation email of a qualifying purchase will appear INSTANTLY as soon as your card has been swiped at a qualifying SMALL BIZ.

I just did two this morning and Congratualtions email came at exactly the same time as the time on the receipt.

I would recommend you guys to call up the merchants and ask if they will accept AMEX. I went to one restaurant that supposedly accepts AMEX (it was on the AMEX facebook page) but initially refused it until I made a fuss about it. They finally relented and accepted AMEX, but I did not receive any email confirmation. I have no idea what the merchant did to mess up the transaction or how this will affect one's eligibility for the $25 credit. It looks like I am going to have to fight this. Get screenshots of the shop on the facebook website and to be doubly sure only visit those shops!
EDIT: For some of us at least, we're getting no email confirmation when we spend at a local SB even with merchants who will gladly take AMEX...

http://www.facebook.com/SmallBusinessSaturday There is a spot on there where you can put in a zip code and it will pull up ALL the small businesses. Click the plus symbol where it says 'see where you can shop to earn your $25 statement credit'. Another spot further down lets you put in a zip code but only pulls up local businesses that have a facebook page.

From the Facebook page:
This year, Small Business Saturday will take place on November 26.
“Like” this Page to stay informed on how to get involved and
help make it bigger than ever. Shoppers will be eligible for special offers and have opportunities to show their support for local businesses in their area. American Express Cardmembers who register or link an eligible Card can receive a one-time $25 statement credit when they spend $25 or more at a small business on November 26. Cardmembers should check back in November for details.

Confirmed locations that worked during last year's promotion (feel free to add your own):
locally owned restaurants
locally owned grocery stores
locally owned liquor stores
locally owned sporting goods stores
local meat market
local tanning salon
local mechanic
local gas station (no chain)
independent book stores (I even ordered ebooks on their website)

Basically it should work at any store that has one location or only a few locations which are all in the area.

Obviously the business has to take American Express.

Quote:

To find your local businesses that are participating:

Click:
https://www.facebook.com/SmallBusinessSaturday

Then click on "Get Involved" on the left hand side.

Then click on "See where you can shop to earn your $25 statement credit"

By the way, "small" online businesses qualify, too. I am not sure how to tell which ones qualify but I know for sure that Classy Groundcovers [ClassyGroundcovers.com] qualifies (they have some sale items that end up close to free).

also www.TheBuffaloWoolCo.com has some things for pretty much half price.

Media Mega Mall http://www.mediamegamall.com is a valid small business for this AMEX deal! You can order online, I got the congrats email from AMEX right after purchase. They've got SmartBlu BDRs for 79 cents. See my post here: http://slickdeals.net/forums/show...count=1116

Katgirl 10-06-2011 05:54 PM

Worked for me last year. :woot: Thanks for the heads up about this year.

bitachu 10-06-2011 05:55 PM

so how do they define a small business?

ltb7 10-06-2011 05:58 PM

do you need to sign up?

localdeals 10-06-2011 06:00 PM

I did not get them last year because I swiped my card outside at the pump.

b534202 10-06-2011 06:00 PM

I don't see where it mentions $25?

MrVCU 10-06-2011 06:01 PM

What about with an AmEx pre-paid?

Target Dawg 10-06-2011 06:02 PM

Sweet, did it last year with no issues. Went to a local independent pizza place.

Blu- 10-06-2011 06:02 PM

Oh hell yes. Loved it last year.

vaultaddict 10-06-2011 06:06 PM

nice, got this times 5 last year, and ready to do at least that many this year again

the_rockstar 10-06-2011 06:07 PM

Any action needed now to get the credit? Load to Card, Link, Love,..?

Or just shop on 11/26?

TeflonDon 10-06-2011 06:07 PM

This really makes me want to open a Zync and recoup my annual fee, though I guess it would be smarter to just get one of the no-fee cash cards. I've been looking at getting an amex but was going to wait until after the new year.

Katgirl 10-06-2011 06:07 PM

Roosters worked for me last year :yummy:

MrVCU 10-06-2011 06:13 PM

Aww, must spend $25 or more????

So I can't buy a 20oz Pepsi at the corner store and profit $23.34???

On the other hand, i guess that means I can get $25 worth of free food at the taco shack or pizza place.

WebNomad 10-06-2011 06:14 PM

oh man, I'm really looking forward to that. question -

Is Amex Pass card eligible?
Is Citi Amex card eligible?

I know last year, the 2nd user card on the main account was eligible, and Fidelity Amex card was eligible.

It needs to be a small independent business. I spent my money at a local Italian restaurant in my town. You need to link your card number to the program and then spend $$$ at an independent small business on Small Business Day. Actually, I think last year they extended it a few days.

Conformer101 10-06-2011 06:15 PM

Holy crap ... if there was a deal on SD where the UPS man delivered a $20 bill FOR FREE, there would still be complaining!!

ace50421 10-06-2011 06:17 PM

Last year I spent a couple dollars at a small business and still got a $25.00 credit.

tstarks420 10-06-2011 06:21 PM

Last year I bought a $30.00 gift card to a local (non-chain) nail salon as a gift. Got the statement credit within 2-3 days if I recall, but there was an early signup...don't see that yet here.

peppermint 10-06-2011 06:22 PM

Thanks can't remember where I used it last year

ace50421 10-06-2011 06:28 PM

I used my at a local record store. Almost missed out last year but they extended about a week.

hp79 10-06-2011 06:31 PM

Ahh.. man I shouldn't have closed one of my Amex blue credit card. I just closed one couple months ago when I was cleaning up my cards. Now I only have one Amex to use. It worked great last year buying gift certificates at Hmart (Asian grocery).

Got some good stuff at the liquor store :)

Yeah, I remember that. I scrambled on the last day (original deadline) to buy something (after being sick), and then they suddenly say "you have more time".

geminimagk 10-06-2011 06:35 PM

I got it last year on the 4 different AMEX's I have....super easy.

bdlsmo 10-06-2011 06:39 PM

Local strip club, hookers and blow worked last year

Tritons 10-06-2011 06:40 PM

Worked last year and was awesome, but I don't see anything saying they'll be giving a $25 statement credit again this year. Fingers crossed! We used it at a local restaurant and it worked.

Interface 10-06-2011 07:01 PM

got $25 of free gas, will do it again this year.

phonic 10-06-2011 07:13 PM

Woohoo! I got this last year, looking forward to it again.

mstic 10-06-2011 07:18 PM

sgb 10-06-2011 07:19 PM

Got four credits last time. Looking forward to it again.

Kenjimaru 10-06-2011 07:24 PM

thanks OP, its good that they are doing it again this year

JZoidberg 10-06-2011 07:24 PM

I did this last year, and the website had a definition of the terms. I tried to find it but didn't find it. I think it specified any business that wasn't part of a chain. I know that the promotion went two ways- the businesses had to sign up to be part of it. We went to a local restaurant and got the rebate.

No.

There was no requirement for the business to sign up for it.

Absolutely not.

Now I remember. They gave out free advertising to a number of businesses that did register, but they didn't have to.

Commentary 10-06-2011 07:39 PM

This is one of the greatest promotion. We did like 6 last year. Pretty much any non-chain restaurant is good to go.

mpkb 10-06-2011 07:42 PM

Wonder if there is enough time to get some more AX cards...

Noswar 10-06-2011 07:43 PM

Pretty much any merchant that accepts American Express that is not a national firm, franchisee, etc. I used mine last year with a local bookseller. Local cafes and restaurants are eligible.

kris259 10-06-2011 07:44 PM

sweet got in on this one last year....

its pretty simple... as long as its not a big corp store... they do a credit... fast and easy... I did a local pizza place last year... will do the same this year... or maybe a few micro beers from the local liquor store...

SDPirates 10-06-2011 07:51 PM

I used my card last year at a liquor store along with liquor rebate, both worked out good for me.

I hope to combine if there are any liquor rebate this year.

Kingcharming 10-06-2011 07:52 PM

Ok, so how many per person? I have two cards....

aaba78 10-06-2011 07:53 PM

can i get buy a $25 gas card a gas station or local store and get the $25 credit?

Tazmania99 10-06-2011 08:08 PM

Gas station may not be a "small business" but local stores would work.

kreizyidiot 10-06-2011 08:19 PM

Not sure which stores work in the south bay area, los angeles

We have several Amex cards between us. We used them last time at mom and pop restaurants. You know, single location, not part of a franchise.

Worked great. Can't wait to do it again this year.

isn't H-mart a huge business with locations from the east all the way to the west coast?
I seen them in MA, TX, and CA for sure...

iwls01 10-06-2011 10:45 PM

I too closed all our AA Amex cards because they start to charge annual fees, but I also got for some new cards this year - mostly Mastercard though, and I was happy to get onto the Mastercard Target OO offers. Hey Visa, are you still awake? Get into the competitions!

litache 10-06-2011 10:50 PM

I know, it's funny that Hmart is considered small business. :)
It worked last year. My wife and I had 2 Amex card each, so we bought four $25 gift certificates. This was in Tigard, OR, but I read it worked in all other places too. I don't see why it wouldn't work again this time, but we'll have to see.

thebigcountry 10-07-2011 01:38 AM

it also works for all authorized users on all cards. So on my Starwood card, I had 5 users who all got $25 credit each.

yeah_okay 10-07-2011 04:36 AM

I used mine at a restaurant in my neighborhood. I'm not sure if they spelled it out, but I decided any non-chain restaurant would be my target. Worked just fine - 25 buck return appeared right away. Sweet!

synergy3000 10-07-2011 04:54 AM

I used mine at a local import beer and wine store. Got some good beers for almost free.:)

Last year it ran over a few week period I think. Anyway, I bought steaks at a local
meat market and my wife did a payment at her local tanning salon. The thing is to make sure they accept AMEX first before you make your plan. Credit was immediate when I checked my online account. A local Vet would work, Joe's mechanic works just stay away from national/regional chains.

Thanks for the HU OP, and repped.

same here. I pumped gas at a marathon gas station and bought pizza at little caesars but got nothing back.

I did mine at a local Chinese restaurant last year. I had to call in to AMEX customer service to chase down the credit when it failed to appear after 3 statements.

It was great the last time around .. got $100 credit across the cards that we had. Have even more Amex cards this time around. Will mark my calendar to do groceries at the local shop that day ..

Should I add more authorized users to my account to get more out of this deal? How many cards will Amex send me?

I believe it's one per account, not authorized user, so I don't think that will help.

BTW, define "tied".

ludhianvi 10-08-2011 09:12 AM

I dont see a place to register the card(s). The only thing that shows up is Like on FB, how will AMEX know that I have CC tied to this account? My wife, who is an authorized user, doesn't have her email address on file with AMEX, so may be she will not be able to get credit this time. Anyone has a link to register cards? (The hustler link, register your Amex card to Small Business Saturday site, even after clicking on Register here, takes to FB like page).

if this is possible.. not sure what TIED means... but you can always try it with another authorized user card.... on something you can return... so with your main card you do food for example... on the other card you buy something that can be returned if you dont get your credit.... but I would say it is very unlikely you can sneak by with 2x25 credit on the same account buy using an authorized user... but if you can... wow... go buy a lotto at the same time...LOL

I believe a few people in this thread have already said all their authorized user cards received the credit. Any more confirmation of this?

Close they ran out of twentys, most complaints were from latecomers to the deal. They got 2 $10 bills which took up way more space in their wallets.

I went to a local independent book store and my kids got a few stocking stuffers. Great deal thanks for the heads up

they charge for each one, IIRC it's $50 yearly (might be $35)
they waived the first year for me on a lot of them

They charge for authorized users??? Do other CC companies do that? If I already have annual fee waived for 1 year will this authorized user fee be waived as well?

phonic 10-08-2011 09:06 PM

They charge depending on the card you have. Some cards might be free for all of them. Others give you up to so many for free. Others charge you something for the first 5 additional cards, and more cards after that. Platinum *charge cards* cost $175 per additional user. Again, it all depends on the card you have, so check on their website to find out.

Premium Rewards Gold cards give you 5 free IIRC.

Yes, different numbers on the cards. All come on the same bill. Got credit for each card registered last year. I would guess that if it takes the registration, you will get the credit.

I have an American Express Premiere Rewards Gold CHARGE card. Are charge cards eligible or just credit cards?

Also, on my account it says:

I've added some info about successful locations for this promo last year to the wiki. Feel free to add your own to give ideas to others.

Personally I took advantage of this at a locally owned sporting good store to pick up a few things I didn't really need but knew would be handy.

I asked only because the sign up is centered on account number. If it was the same, then there would be no way authorized users could sign up for this.

From BARGAINEERING,com it looks like registration begins Nov 1st

American Express Small Business Saturday 2011

by Jim Wang
Email Print
Small Business Saturday, the easiest way to “make” $25, is back for it’s second year. Smack in between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Small Business Saturday was American Express’s promotion in which you could get a $25 statement credit if you spent at least that much at a “small business” that day. There are various other business focused promotions associated with it, like $100 in free Facebook ads, but for consumers, the $25 is one of the easiest ways to benefit from having an American Express card.

http://www.bargaineering.com/arti...-2011.html

To take advantage, you’ll need to register at the Small Business Saturday website once registration opens on November 1st. Last year, the promotion was limited to the first 100,000 to pre-register their card so you’ll want to act quickly. I’ll try to get a reminder out before the 1st.

AMEX $25 Statement Credit

AMEX $25 Statement Credit
"For the second year in a row, American Express will help drive traffic through the doors of small businesses with a special incentive: a $25 statement credit offer for Cardmembers when they register their Card and spend $25 or more on Small Business Saturday, November 26, at any qualifying small business that accepts the American Express Card. Cardmembers will be able to register their cards in early November.":cool::cool:

Quote above is from AMEX Press Release located here:
http://about.americanexpress.com/...s-soc.aspx

Thank you AMEX. :woot::woot::woot:
There is another thread for the FED EX Participation in Small Business Staurday, But the thread I am posting here is direct from AMEX.
Keep an eye out. There may be other companies jumping in with similar promotions.

Confirmed locations that worked during last year's promotion (feel free to add your own):
locally owned restaurants
locally owned grocery stores
locally owned liquor stores
locally owned sporting goods stores
local meat market
local tanning salon
local mechanic
local gas station (no chain)

Basically it should work at any store that has one location or only a few locations which are all in the area.

Obviously the business has to take American Express. If when November 26 rolls around you call a business to ask if they take American Express, I suggest telling them that you only calling because of this promotion and that if they don't take American Express, it doesn't mean that you won't shop there. Many small business owners don't take American Express because of the costs involved for them (which of course make it harder for them to stay in business). A small business owner getting a bunch of calls asking if they take American Express without knowing why could lead them to think they need to start taking it, when in reality most of those people would be happy to pay with different card (or if you really care about your local small business, pay cash).

I could name a few places but they are all small privately owned businesses in my town so that's not really going to help you. Just make sure it's not a chain place. I had two cards with extra cards for my mom and my brother. We did groceries several times at a local deli and I was surprised to find out I got the $25 credit after paying for a doctor's visit with one of my cards.

Nack 10-26-2011 09:06 PM

Used this at the local Mexican restaurant last year. Free food and drinks is good!

I searched "Freebies" for "AMEX" and "American Express". None of the posts came back showing "AMEX $25 Statement Credit" or anything that resembled it. I just checked Freebies again and still nothing shows prior to my post. What should this be considered if not a Freebie? I don't want to steal anyones thunder. I don't need any thunder.

Get over the repost or not repost. If you think it's a repost then you don't have to communicate on this thread. Frankly I don't care either way. Thanks OP because if it is a repost I didn't see the original.

Question though: does this work for all amex cards or just the typical gold/platinum? I.E. will it work with my Starwood Amex? I think I tried using with Corporate Amex and that didn't work so FYI.

Does anyone know if they can track if you've registered more than one card, and if they do accept the AMEX bank cards (like citi AAdvantage)?

I am wondering the same thing... I wonder if small business in another country will count.

Thank's for the post I missed it the first time

Read the thread, didn't see this addressed:

Does the $25 need to be spent at one small business, or will they sum up all purchased made that day at all small businesses. I realize that the wording on the site says "Spend $25 at a small business," but it isn't exactly crystal clear.

$25 at one transaction. Last year registered multiple cards on same accounts, all got credit.

The link is not available yet. Registration starts on November 1st.

For people who keep asking what cards count just try registering any and all that you have and the registration site will let you know if the particular card is eligible. That's what I did last time.

The multiple cards need different card numbers. Not all Amex accounts do. The following Amex cards get the exact same card number for each authorized user:

Macys Amex
Fidelity Amex
...maybe more?

Do adult movie stores qualify?

What do you mean by different card numbers?

On the accounts I have, when I request an additional card for a family member or employee, the cards issued have a different account numbers on the card although billed together on one bill. These cards having unique numbers all got the $25 credit last year.

I just put up a decal we received from Amex.

Lets see how many people with Amex come to my store.... i barely have 1-2 transactions a month!!!
