how does this compare to the lenovo z570 with i3?

BGRT 10-29-2011 11:00 PM

Tempting. This does play Crysis 1 fluidly on medium which most other $400 laptops will not.

JPSftw! 10-29-2011 11:35 PM

Best gaming laptop @ $400 price point, hands down.

I bought this laptop when on sale in Sept and due to being very sick I haven't been able to use it too much finally unboxing it 2 days ago! I wish I could answer your question but can tell you what some very helpful, computer smart posters have told me. 1st I think the i3 is a little better than this AMD but not by much. What I learned depending on who is writing their opinion is the weak link in either confrig is the lower end graphics. I am going to post a link by 'Toms Computers' a self help site that has good advice. They believe this laptop has slightly better graphic graphics than the sandy bridge 2nd gen i3 that comes with Intel 3000 graphics but not the 2000 version. They mention it will play "most games" albeit on medium settings. Since I don't play games on laptops It wasn't a issue with me. I was more attracted to it for the Lenovo name, its comfy keyboard, good sounding speakers, build quality and its track pad. The other weak part some posters do not like the low resolution camera. I agree Lenovo cut corners in that dept which made so sense since a web cam does not cost much but people who have used it say for making Skype calls the picture it is very clear even in low light. I do not know what people expect for a $400. computer with many saying if you "wait" you will get a better deal on Black friday etc etc. Maybe so but if I lived with that mindset I would still be waiting to buy a Plasma TV sitting back watching my early 90's Sony 27" XBR tube set happy I didn't Blow $900. on my late 2006-07' Panasonic 37" Plasma that I have been enjoying these past 4 years. My advice is to Google your questions. Most of all if heavy duty gaming is important to you, this laptop might not be the best for anyone with that as a big priority. Sorry I could not help you more. Notebookcheck.net's benchmarks have the HD6520G beating the snot out of the HD3000 in games. It's discrete, non-integrated, and is just flat out faster.

Thank You. Makes me feel even better I jumped on it Sept 21st. Mine came with 6gb of memory but everything else is the same I think unless I have the 750gb hard drive. Makes me almost want to buy a 2nd one for a friend having hard times right now. Hell, I probably will. Anyway, thank U.

Maybe Not. Both Laptops I bought at Frys in Oct advertised just like these did not go Live until about 5:15am est ( New York ) time, I checked Pay Pal account for the time I made purchases. U may be right about 'store only' but I would not give up hope until 90 minutes from now.

Laptop deals are DEAD now!

i was just looking at the other items in the add and most of them are at the sale price with shipping unavailable and a few items are available for shipping from the add with the old price. would be nice to see this one for shipping.

LordDrol 10-30-2011 01:06 AM

Shouldn't this be listed as 1.4GHz?

atoneapone 10-30-2011 01:16 AM

priced appropriately..but this should be considered the going "sale" rate on a "basic" amd A6 3400m configuration with single integrated 6520g graphics.

It lacks dual graphics like those offered by HP and Asus laptops sold in the last 3 months ,so I'd keep looking out for those instead of this. But these days if you just want to spend a maximum of $400, then this configuration is probably worth it over the competition. Just know that for $500-600 range you may get much better dual graphics laptops if you wait and search hard for it.

I'm confused, I thought you had to manually overclock the CPU. There was another thread about a HP laptop with the same CPU and people claimed they overclocked the processor to 2GB + speed.

First is dual graphics as you said but more expensive. Second was a pricing error which apparently resulted in lots of cancelations. Third is a higher priced A8.

For a base A6-3400M, I don't think it has gotten below $400 yet.

New AMD CPUs have Turbo Core which automatically overclocks half the cores (2 in this case) when the CPU detects 2 or more cores are idle. In other words it figuratively borrows power/heat capacity from the idle cores to boost performance on the ones actually being used. This is intended to help with single threaded applications like Lame and iTunes.

The CPU and GPU are integrated on the same die and it doesn't have its dedicated memory, so it's not discrete, but "discrete-class." However the GPU portion of the APU is way more powerful than the integrated graphics in the traditional sense, such as Intel's offering. The APU will automatically allocate at least 512MB of system RAM to the GPU to ensure graphics performance. Also note on the APU the 4 CPU cores don't share graphics tasks, the Radeon GPU core does all the job, so it's not gonna affect CPU performance.

The APU has a normal speed of 1.4Ghz with a turbo boost to 2.3Ghz. The boost is done automatically depends on CPU load, and usually only lasts several seconds. The A-series APUs are known to be easily overclockable, the A6-3400M can be easily overclocked to 2.4Ghz - 2.6Ghz normal speed, plus a turbo of 2.8 - 3.0Ghz. Intel's Core 2010 and 2011 series have the same turbo boost functions.

so the boost only last a short period of time, is it possible to overclock the CPU to a fixed speed like 2.4Ghz and stays at this speed? (just like how you overclock your desktop CPU)

Yes as I have mentioned you can overclock its "normal speed," or P0 state to 2.4 - 2.6Ghz and it'll run at that speed, at the same time you can overclock the momentary boost (B0 state) to 2.8 - 3.0Ghz.

TAX is the key word here
i was going to buy this laptop (same processor 17.3 inch screen, acer -_-) but tax kills that deal. frys on the other hand may charge me $10 for shipping, but it's cheaper than $32 tax for living in California.

If you live in a state that doesn't charge tax for staples, then consider this one

It is an integrated gpu, but much better than any other integrated gpu.

The a6 pretty much has a desktop hd5550 desktop card built into the cpu (though it is downclocked to 400 mhz). It shares the memory with the cpu thus if you have 4gbs and you share 512mb with the gpu you have 3.5 for everything else.

The a8 has the better hd5570 built into the cpu (it is downclocked to 400 mhz). Once again sharing the memory.

It is significantly better than the hd3000 in graphic workloads. The sandybridge i3 and i5 are faster in cpu workloads.

So pretty much you are getting last year mid range gpu built into the cpu. You also get great battery life.

If you really want to game I'd wait atleast another month until Black Friday for all the deals week to week, and see if a dual graphics laptop springs up for atleast $450 like the Best Buy Asus deal back in Aug-Sept. If nothing comes around before then, I think deals like this basic A6 integrated 6520 graphics configuration will keep coming for months for around $400-$450 from other manufacturers like(Toshiba, HP, Acer, Lenovo, ASUS, and Gateway.)

This deal is still fine since $400 is about as low as it will go, and if you don't want to mess around waiting and searching another month. I have an Asus A6 6650m dual graphics laptop & the gaming is definitely worth the extra $50. HP laptops have even better gaming but only available in refurb, so don't get that unless you want to take a risk getting a lemon( but if the risk pays off, you'll get outstanding features like A8, 6750m dual graphics, usb 3.0, and BluRay).
Here is another deal even more expensive at $530 very similar to the Asus sold at Bestbuy. Maybe something like this will go for $450 on Black Friday....

From this [cpu-world.com]:

The microprocessor runs at 1.4 GHz, although the new Turbo core feature can boost this frequency to 2.3 GHz when some cores are non-operational.
It will never reach that frequency on all the cores without you overclocking it yourself or something so it seems kind of misleading to put 2.3 as the freq. I've got this processor but I forgot the name for a sec so I did a double take. Meh.

michaelt817 10-30-2011 07:50 AM

Got this deal last month for same price but mines had 6 gb of ram.

Pretty good laptop, decent for light gaming (only play league of legends ocassionally).

Overall for 400 dollars its a good value, the build quailty is pretty solid.

Only complaint is that the keyboard is LOUD!. When im at school it sounds like im typing on a dam typewriter only thing missing is the ding noise.

but one time I caught the deal ass soon as it came live an it was available for shipping.

but then I checked like a few minutes after ordering and it was no longer available for shipping.

moral of the story? be there the first 5 minutes the deal is live to have it shipped. (the closes frys to me is 500+ miles away. I'm in NYC)

The A8 on Newegg is still available. Although $550+s/h is a pretty big % up from a $400 laptop. But it does come with a $35 router.

I really like that deal with its great A8 configuration at a good price but "refurb" will scare most people away. But there is no denying getting a reasonable laptop like this Lenovo for the low price of $400 which is why this deal is front page.

The most important thing about all laptop purchases is that they don't break down in the next 5 years or more, but nothing is predictable, and everything about longevity is luck.

I agree. HP is not really known for longevity with their laptops, and refurb doesn't put that fuzzy feeling in your tummy. But if you game, that deal is $150 better than anything anywhere, and the reviews are very, very good (early on).

It should be noted that Lenevo and Thinkpads are 2 different Brands made by the same company. Lenevo's have a 1 yr warrenty. Thinkpads usually has 3 years. I say this because my roommate got a Lenevo 17inch a year ago and it crapped out by the end of summer. he lost his receipt and threw away the box and was too lazy to send it back for repair. Another works just because this company also makes thinkpads doesn't mean this is as reliable as thinkpads.

Here are the best A6 laptops that have ever come on slickdeals:

nice! never seen this deal before; I updated my post. Looks like the best deal for an APU A6 laptop. And the cpu is better than every other A6 (1.4ghz) laptop that has come around. But the cpu can be overclocked easily to 2.0 GHZ or higher. Just nice to see the better A6 cpu on a deal. On the site it also has 750gb harddrive, and now listed at $600. It doesn't specify radeon graphic card number, but assuming 6520g, which is the common integrated graphics. So in the last month, about 3 good basic A6 laptop deals came, so more deals like this should keep coming week to week. But if you're expecting better gaming ability, then keep waiting for a deal on dual graphic APU A6/A8 laptops.

I just woke Up a hour ago so I could not answer your "Help" until now. Sorry U Missed the Fry's deal but as most SD'rs know these deals go LIVE around 5:10am ( my time est ) and even though the product may be available in store at noontime shipping sales usually end within 2 hours or so while others are sleeping. I would not worry, this laptop seems to show up monthly at this price but as others have so kindly pointed out 'the early bird gets the laptop'. Sometimes that doesn't even help. If you don't answer the phone when Fry's does their selective confirmation of your credit card, your order is promptly cancelled by 9pm est like mine was on Sept 2, 2012 without even a e-mail telling me there was a problem. In fact my account order page said it was being processed for almost a week. I finally called getting the bad news losing out on a decent $268.00 dual core Intel Lenovo just like this one with lower specs. I learned. I now call Fry's 1-408-350-1484 when they open at 8am to confirm my order every time. After speaking to Karen in C.S. tired from tracking the deal all night I return to bed happy. My Fry's shipping problem is probably because I have my orders shipped to a address that is not my billing address but I don't take any chances after my Fry's cancellation almost 2 months ago. For awhile Fry's never bothered sending you any kind of e-mail and I was told by customer service they were working on that problem. So hang in there and do the late night work involved to snag a deal from Fry's. They have their best deals with their ad posted on line late Thursday night by helpful SD'rs and usually 1 or 2 week-end 1 day sales over the week-end. Or you can go to Fry's site yourself like I do and check out their sales being ready to buy at 5am est. Good luck next time. p.s. Funny post Thor.

I am not sure what the deal is with people posting false processor speeds in these deal posts.

The AMD A6-3400M (Codename Llano) is a quad-core processor for entry level laptops. It is part of the Fusion family of APUs (=Accelerated Processing Units) and features an integrated Radeon HD 6520G graphics card. The processor core is clocked at 1.4 GHz base clock speed and is able to automatically overclock up to 2.3 GHz (TurboCore, depending on temperature and used cores).

There are 3 issues with the Samsung laptop. 1st is the sound volume is low -- very low -- it can be played with and using vlc or other media players made better. 2nd is screen angles -- can hardly be shared viewing on this laptops monitor -- a few degrees over 10 or 15 and the screen becomes unwatchable or unreadable. LASTLY -- no matter which media player you use you will get a shudder or stutter on a regular basis during playback. It won't stop but sometimes it will knock the sound out of sync. Mine is going back this Wednesday.

this deal is DEAD!!!

did a online purchase for pickup in-store yesterday out of town, didn't get to fry's before closing, went today and the laptop if any is in stock is back to $549. fry's said it was a one day deal that expires on that day so even if you do "purchase" online, cc was not charged, it will not be held for you past that day (or date of expiration on the confirmation email).
