~UPDATE 5 MONTHS LATER~
The drive is still working perfectly with the Macbook Pro. No issues, kernel panics, etc. Boot up is still 14 seconds even after all of the patches, updates and program installations that have happened since November. However, the issue is with the rebate from CA/TotalDefense, which was a stipulation of this purchase. It took FIVE MONTHS, 9 phone calls and a complaint to the BBB to receive the $50 rebate American Express card. I see in other forums that some people gave up on it, and others settled for a $20 American Express card that was sent to them. Here's the fast facts: *To make this deal work, you had to purchase the CA TotalDefense Backup software for that came with a $50 rebate American Express card. *To apply for the rebate, you had to install the software, sign up for the Automatic Renewal and provide a credit card number and information you entered into a website. You were not presented with a confirmation number, just a message that said "You're all set!" *Rebate was supposed to be mailed about 6 weeks after activating software and signing up for Auto Renewal. *CA TotalDefense also offered a $20 rebate card through other retailers. *Since the customer was not given a confirmation number, and rebates are handled by different departments at two companies (CA and TotalDefense still function as separate entities), CA/TotalDefense can claim that they do not have a record, or claim that you are only owed the $20 rebate since they cannot verify whether you claimed the $20 rebate or $50 rebate. In short, don't ever trust a CA/TotalDefense rebate promise. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ VERTEX PLUS HAD DATA CORRUPTION ISSUES ON OLD FIRMWARE: FIRMWARE 3.55 FIXES CORRUPTION ISSUES THAT CAME FROM USING SATA I CONNECTION (Sata II is the 3gb/s & Sata III is the new 6gb/s interface)~flashfir I have my roommate running his netbook on vertex plus firmware 3.55 no problems few weeks in. DEAD. Not avail online, won't add software to cart. Need software for rebate to get price to $70. NOTICE: These are Barefoot+Martini drives, not Sandforce. |
tigerdirect not newegg
|
The SSD may be Sandforce but the price per GB is pretty awesome. Good find!
|
nice price
FYI: You have to enroll in CA's Automatic Renewal Service to get the $50 rebate |
Good deal if you are in the market for a Sata II, older model.
|
i was excited until i read the reviews. YIKES>

Meh, I'm trying to confirm whether or not it's fixed in firmware... I would like to hear from a drive owner here.
Quote:
I'll set a google calendar reminder to disable it. The rebate is triggered right after you give them your card info, so you can cancel immediately after. I'll probably do it on a one time discover card number and tell them any further charges on the SOAN number aren't authorized, just in case. Since it would be a one time number I wouldn't have to change my card # if there were problems. |
Great deal, TU+Repped
|
I own the 120gb Vertex Plus. At first, I got windows errors stating to check my drive consistency. But once they released the firmware update, I flashed my drive without wiping data, and it's working flawlessly in my Asus K52F-BBR9 with 8gigs RAM.
|

|
Ended up buying. Set 6 reminders via Google Calendar to get the rebates done. I think I'll be fine.
Other owners (via Google search) concurred with OP when I asked for advice and stated 3.55 fixes the issues that cause the bad reviews. Somewhat comfortable that it's over half in rebates. |

|
Why not just buy the software by itself and make $30?
|
The speeds aren't that good on this ssd
|
Quote:
I'll cancel authorization on the Discover card SOAN single use number within a week of adding it though. Leaving it open is a liability. |
Quote:
What should I do if I do not have a Discover card with SOAN? I only have a debit card... :/ |
Quote:
Your issuer may say "blah, we can't cancel them automatically if they occur", but just say "I want to put a notation on file just in case the biller ignores the cancellation and I have to dispute it later". The beauty of one time use credit card numbers is you can get them individually cancelled... So if I ask for number cancellation that would prevent any and all future charges on that #. I wish American Express still offered a single use credit card service... |
Possible Issues With Latest FW
All,
Without 3.5 or 3.55 firmware, the drive is completely unstable. It is much more usable with at least 3.5. However, when RAIDing, especially RAID0, there are still data integrity issues. There is a reason they are fire-selling these drives...and it ain't to give the consumer a deal. :vomit: Buyer beware. TrevorK |
This almost seems too good to be true. And doesn't TigerDirect get a lot of mixed reviews as a seller? And the drive gets mixed reviews, too... I may have to pass.
|
Quote:
Which means you're eventually going to encounter performance issues on any drive presently available using RAID0 because TRIM isn't available. |
Quote:
There are RAID 0 issues with firmware 3.55? |

|
The reviews for Mac OS X Lion on Newegg are positive... in for one!
|
To good of a deal to pass. Been looking for a 64gb ssd for $50ish but this will do just fine if not better. I'll just have to remember to cancel the software after i get my rebate and to update the firmware :/ Thanks OP
|
Should I RAID 0 these for my new computer build?
It's either take out the 120gb Vertex Plus in my laptop, buy another one and RAID 0 it for my new Corsair 500R build. OR Take apart the Seagate GoFlex 3TB I picked up last night, use it as an internal drive, and buy an SSD at another time. Thoughts, fellas? |
I've had a 30gb Vertex (original, not plus) I bought used, and have been running just fine for about 6 months. In general, negative reviews on the internet tend to over represent (nobody complains when it works fine), but this thing does seem to have a higher failure rate than many other SSDs. Whether its 5% instead of 1% or 25% vs 2%, I have no idea; also haven't bothered to update the firmware on my drive yet, so don't know how that plays into it
|
Great deal! Thanks OP. I'll be using it as a secondary SSD without RAID primary for installing games. A little scared to use it for OS drive but it should be fine for installing games.
I was charged 2.29 for eco shipping so you might want to add that to the title. |
the crappy software is OOS for me.

cheapest per GB so far... ? I don't think I would ever buy an OCZ SSD after all the bad reviews they get, but great price. :)
|
They don't appear out of stock but you can't add the software to the card because it seems that's out of stock.
|
sata 3 or bust.
|
Can't add software anymore, i think it might be dead .... sucks too great deal
|
I'll ask once again:
Why don't people just buy the software by itself, forget about the SSD, and make $30 bucks out of the deal? |
Quote:
|
damn, the software is oos.
|
TD:thumbdow: just because it's TD

Mixed bag of reviews on Newegg:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Pro...llFullInfo Anyone here own this? Thoughts? |
wow, I have zero luck with rebates through tiger direct. Last time I never received it, called rebate company, they told me tiger direct never gave them funds for the rebate and to call tiger direct. TD ruins this.
|
beware, if you "add to cart" the SSD + software bundle...it only adds the SSD now. TD has sucked balls since they switched their CEO.

In the end its the price you have to pay to be on the cutting edge. Thank God i was able to have all my drives stable in few days of tweaking. OCZ has lot of info in its forms and it takes some time to figure out the right answer. Intel is drives have best reviews for stablity but they are not the fastest drive on the market. Intel is very conservative when it comes to releasing new stuff. They take thier time when it comes to realeasing products. People buy them because they are intel. Most co operate users only use intel or samsung ssd. OCZ is a baby when compared to intel. |
I just phone ordered this.
Also bought 8GB of laptop RAM for $22.99AR + $2.19 SH: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applic...u=P33-5320 |

No rebate without the software, huh.

so the sata ii has corruption issues if i try to put it in a sata i thinkpad huH?

Ok I'm confused. I just bought this thing because I saw the 69.99 on the page and figured I would figure out the rebates latter. But now I see the $50 one is dependent on buying some software as well? My order was just the SSD. What the heck is going on here?

thanks

To be honest guys, the benchmarks on this thing are as slow as 7200rpm HDDs.

Review at Newegg (latest):
Cons: Known SF controller defect has NOT been solved with the latest firmware update. Four lock ups in as many days, gives me horrible heartburn. |
Rebate links not working for me.

This thing gets 40ish MB/s random read/write. HDDs are not going to come close. Sequential isn't top of the pack but it's still high 100's to 200MB/s. Let's be truthful here. It's much more responsive than a HDD. Maybe if you were talking about the smaller capacities, but the 120G drive is more than acceptable for a non-technosnob. |

It's out of stock now, but yesterday I was able to add just the software to my cart for $20. |
After hearing so many negative things about Tigerdirect's rebate, I'm going to skip this one even though it's very tempting.

Edit: Just for clarity, the drives above were used to illustrate the warranty status of the drive itself. I have RMA'd other drives in the past that were from enclosures. I used to run across these every so often when I worked as a PC tech. |
Tigerdirect + ocz ssd + 2 rebates
I skipped this deal. |
Quote:
So if my drive from the external goes bad (and I took it apart for use as an internal in my rig), I could RMA just the drive to Seagate? If I decide to get into it, I'll for sure keep the enclosure. But can they tell I took it apart? |

That's if you just give them model number/serial number on the HDD itself? |
For Thrill Seekers -- OCZ Vertex Plus 120GB SSD and CA Online Backup for $69.99AR
OCZ TECHNOLOGY 120GB VERTEX PLUS CA ONLINE BACKUP [tigerdirect.com] -- $69.99 after rebate
Warnings: 1. The drive has scary reviews and it's not clear whether the newest firmware fixes the problems 2. It's TigerDirect -- you may or may not get your rebates, even if they do come from CA and OCZ 3. You have to sign up for auto-renewal of the CA backup service in order to get that rebate, but you can cancel it before you renew On the plus side: 1. The drive has garbage collection so it works with Windows XP 2. That's pretty cheap for a 120GB SSD, if you get the rebates |

I would personally steer clear of the Plus drives. These are older Indilinx drives that contain newer Arowana (FTL) firmware. OCZ also announced a free firmware upgrade for existing drives back in June, changing their regular drives into "plus" versions.
New FTL Supports 2xnm NAND Flash and Increases Performance of Indilinx Controllers by up to 500% http://www.ocztechnology.com/abou...s/2011/432 Except, Arowana is buggy, and they haven't released the firmware some six months later. Instead, they would rather use new customers as guinea pigs. http://www.ocztechnologyforum.com...na-FW-when The Intel 320 are also pretty cheap, but the difference is they are: reliable, reasonably fast, good. |

So stupid me, seeing the $69.99 promised price after rebates, submitted my order as quick as possible. Now I see that my order total was $130 with only a $30 eligible mail in rebate. I emailed tiger direct and they admit it was an error and say I have to go through the return process since its already shipped. Honestly I don't know why I ever buy anything from Tiger Direct anymore.
|
Received my drive today. Fresh install of windows 7 and then followed the instructions here
http://thessdreview.com/ssd-guide...n-guide-2/ No problems, very fast. If you have an issue with signing up for the automatic renewal for the rebate just go here. store.ca.com/ARSRebate I signed up with an american express giftcard that had $1.37 on it |

Got mine in today. Confirmed when comparing part numbers on the drive to OCZ's official site:
"OCZSSD2-1xxxxxxx is an Indilinx SATA 2 drive. " |

I used a Discover SOAN (recurring billing by a single biller, virtual CC that can be cancelled independently of other virtual CC#s or your real account #) and CA authorized it immediately. I got no Window during install and after doing the thing and being told I'd be sent info about whether or not I got the rebate, I got no such emails.
Auth of $1 is pending on my Discover (should fall off, this is normal when checking credit cards) but I want Discover to cancel authorization on the number ASAP. I have reminders two weeks, a month, and two months out. It's a one year license of the software so the rebate should arrive with plenty of time |
Quote:
No e-mail, but I had to call about 4 times before someone correctly directed me to their rebate department where I finally spoke with a very nice rep who assured me that all I had to do was go to that link, sign up and the rebate would be successful. |

Website said $50, Box said $20 so I'm gonna go with the website because that is where I signed up for the rebate. |

Anybody get the rebate yet? Can I tell Discover to cancel the single use number? The terms weren't clear and I don't want to get deprived of the rebate on a technicality.
|
Just an update, I just got a random email from CA saying "Further to yor [sic] request for cancellation of your CA Online Backup user account (User
Name:email@example.com), the account has been canceled". I never requested cancellation and wonder if CA is doing it in an attempt to not honor the rebate. I will update if I gain any information. |

CA Emailed me back a very polite email. It did not fully address the issue (my login doesn't work) but I have been assured I'll get the rebate.

This is an update about the rebate through CA/TotalDefense. It took over FOUR MONTHS, 2 phone calls per month to check up on the status of my rebates, and intervention through the BBB to finally receive my $50 American Express rebate card. I registered for the rebate on 12/6/2012 and finally received the rebate on 4/16/2012. One thing I found out throughout this ordeal is that CA and TotalDefense still act as separate entities, even though they are now owned by the same company. They also contract out customer service after-hours and weekends to two other companies. All four companies do not talk to each other, and cannot access each others' information. Every call to any Customer Service or Rebate Processing representative ended with a, "We will call you back with more details", or, "We will call you back in a week with a status update." Out of the nine inquiries I made, I was told nine times that I would receive a call back, and even after confirming that my contact information was accurate in all of their departments, I never received a single call back. Here's how the phone calls went throughout the months: 1) The representative confirmed on my first phone call that they had received my rebate application and it was still "processing".I then filed a complaint with the BBB. Three weeks later, a $50 American Express card showed up in the mail. I wasted about 8 hours of my time. This doesn't sound bad in itself, but please note that: 1) The company tried to get out of honoring the refund. 2) The company tried to claim that I was wrong. 3) The company offered me less money than was promised. 4) The company tried to bribe me. 5) The company never contacted me back on any occasion. I noticed on other forums that some people never received their rebates, and other people just settled for the $20 rebates. I will never trust CA/TotalDefense. They have lost a customer. (Note that the installation, activation, sign-up for Auto Renewal process and refund filing went through correctly on 12/6, which generated a proper confirmation message for me. The rebate "sign-up" process was done correctly on 12/6) |
^^^ I had the exact same problem...I guess filing a complaint with BBB will get me my $50 MIR...
