Doesnt look like it....see no indication that it does so would bet no ;-)

reader2580 01-06-2012 05:52 PM

Federal only. No state in this version at all. There is always an extra charge to efile state taxes with the version that includes state taxes, but Federal efile is included at no charge.

I simply mail my state taxes as I usually owe them less than $100. I have no interest in paying $19.95 to efile state taxes.

Do you use any software to compute the state taxes?

I use At Home Deluxe + State to do my state taxes. I just print out the paper forms for my state taxes and mail them in instead of paying $19.95 to efile.

I am a CPA and I do not care if you use these products. But, please do not go to HR Block or any of the other "sit down" places. They charge far too much for no service.

I can't tell you how many clients I have seen who have paid MORE at HR Block/etc retail location than it would have cost them to come to me or any of the other local CPAs that I know personally.

pawtracks 01-06-2012 07:12 PM

Can anyone confirm the AAFES price? I'm seeing $59.95 with a $30 rebate if you buy a version of Quicken

ljn21 01-06-2012 07:15 PM

There is an H&R $10 rebate out there too. Got Deluxe fed plus state at Target today for $39-$10 Target coupon and then -$10 mail in rebate = $19 net plus tax. Used my red card for another 5% off.

I too use taxact for filing. Never understood if these softwares are that much better to warrant the additional cost.

Also does it really matter what software you use to maximize the returns? (without considering the ease of use or UI features)

eliz165 01-06-2012 07:50 PM

How does this cater to homeowners and differ from the free federal efile edition? Also, is there a 2011 tax credit for new first time home buyers? I've googled this but search results aren't initially clear, plus I trust me fellow SDers a lot more than other internet info floating around.

kyle6286 01-06-2012 07:54 PM

I'm pretty sure I got in on the H&R Block deal last year and I paid less than $20 for the Federal E-file with the software. I mailed state taxes in myself for free.

Kelvrick 01-06-2012 07:56 PM

Regarding the california return website, I remember it having a problem properly deducting vehicle registration fees last year. I noticed the difference when the refund amount came back differently from what turbo tax told me it would be.

I ended up doing a paper file and getting the $7 bucks they tried to scam from me. I don't know if its been fixed this year or maybe was only a glitch for me last year.

I did the same. I think I remember paying $20 total for the software and e-filing, maybe even less. I forget. Any chances prices will go down more in the near future?

cwier60 01-06-2012 08:32 PM

I was fortunate enough to get in on this CA Anti-Virus Plus (6-Month Subscription) + H&R Block At-Home Deluxe (Digital Download) $0.01 deal last year. I then upgraded to Premium for $15 more. I'll hold out a little while to see if something comparable comes along this year.

Absolutely! In past years, it seems that the best deals are in early January, maybe the 1st several weeks, and then the last few days before the filing deadline. Deals between those times are often sporadic.

why don't you buy the H&R Block At Home Deluxe 2011 Win [Download] in OP for $16.99, you 're gonna do exactly the same as you did last year, efile federal and paper state. $16.99 is already cheaper than $20 you pay last year. This is great deal if you ask me.

yk88 01-06-2012 08:38 PM

The $16.99 version does not include the state software. Amazon sells another deluxe version that includes state for an extra charge. Unless you are recommending they just do the state manually, however even for a former professional tax preparer like my, it is worth it to pay a little extra and have the data automatically transfered.

I agree that state efile is a waste of money. No use spending $20 just to get your $100 state refund faster.

Not to nitpick, but your original post only mentions the printable $10 Target coupon. The additional $10 mail-in rebate is not referenced, but it is now attached (not sure how long it's been there, if it was always there and I just missed it or if it was recently added). It might help to change the original post to reference the extra rebate so it is clear that if people go buy it Saturday they could get:
H&R Block At Home 2011 Deluxe $39 - $10 printable Target coupon - $10 mail-in rebate = $19 total (ends today, Saturday 1/7).

I'll be headed to Target to get a copy once the sun comes up!

Seems like you can save yourself the $16.99 for the Deluxe version and get it free yet again through the same Ally Bank H&R Block link I used last year to file my taxes. Like the OPs have said, in many states it's pretty easy to E-file your taxes online on the state website just by punching in your information.

Though my tax this year is more complicated than before, so I'm thinking of buying the $19.99 Deluxe + State from Amazon. I jumped in as well on the $0.01 cent deal last year for the CA Antivirus + H&R Block Deluxe on TD but gave it to a good friend.

http://hrblock.com/taxes/partner/...nerId=5149

The only downside to this version is you have to do it all online. I'm not sure if they'll make you pay at the end, but I know for sure they didn't make me pay last year when I filed my Federal through them...

Even better than the Target deal - use the $10 rebate and that makes this $9.99. Will be returning the one I bought yesterday from Target - sweet!

Edit - scratch that, the rebate form lists the stores its valid from on it and Amazon is not one of them, Target is though. Wonder if it would still go through.

Another thing to check in the near future are Dollar Stores. Yeah, I know that sounds weird, but they have (at least in the past) have had H&R for $1. They did it last year (though at least at my local store, they didn't do it in 2010, but did do it for about 3 years prior). It says "Standard Edition" IIRC. However, when I have used it in the past I think it is the Deluxe version, as it allows me to make all my deductions (I have rental properties) and I didn't notice a difference between it and Deluxe. It's the Federal version only, but does have one free efile. So, you might want to keep your eyes open at you Dollar Store. FYI.

windcolor 01-07-2012 09:21 AM

watch out

the $10 rebate not for amazon.com
so still 19.99 if bought in from amazon

Rebate only calls for a copy of receipt so someone 'could' buy from Target and also from Amazon. Copy the Target receipt and then return to Target. Keep one from Amazon and turn in rebate slip with Target copy receipt. I won't do this but if someone was willing they could still get from Amazon at $9.99.

If you are a novice at filing taxes yourself, I would first recommend taking a look at last years return. If it is relatively uncomplicated (less than 5 pages total Federal) and your income has not changed much, tax software will save you much $ over a tax preparer. I do recommend reading the 1040 instruction book first few pages for recent tax code changes that may affect you. Same for your state return. Filing your own taxes takes time to learn some tax code, paying for software and completing the process. For simple returns, tax preparer might only charge $100.

I find Turbotax to be the best. You go through the Q&A process and it is pretty good at catching recent tax code changes and your particular income/deductions. That being said, for more complicated situations, I would use a professional preparer. Software is not perfect in catching all your income/deductions.

Hope that helps.
