Small surround sound system...Harman Kardon HKTS 20BQ or Energy 5.1 Take Classic....
I have a quick question regarding home surround sound systems....I currently have a good system but I need to get rid of the speakers because they aren't kid friendly...I currently have a nice onkyo receiver, four polk RTi4's bookshelf speakers, polk CSi3 center channel, and a polk 10" sub. I know the new surround probably won't sound as good, but the RTi4's are on speaker stands and having a newborn that is about to crawl worries me...(speakers are very heavy and too bulky)
So i am looking at the speaker kits that I can use my existing Onkyo Receiver...My budget is around $400. So far I am looking at both these systems.... Harman Kardon HKTS 20BQ($389) or Energy 5.1 Take Classic($399) both on amazon...the amazon reviews are very similar being a 4.5 star and 5 star with a bunch of reviews... unfortunately i can't hear them in store so I wanted to see if any of my fellow SD'ers either own them or heard them personally....Or if there are better options(wife doesn't want in ceiling speakers)... My only request that the speakers can be small so they can sit on my fireplace mantel... Please help if you can....thanks! |
i jumped on the Energy 5.0 system as i already own a polk psw10 subwoofer... newegg had the 5.0 system(same speakers as take classic) for $199.99 on sale this weekend.... I will report how they sound...

Just saw this. I've got the energy take 5.1 and it is very nice. Make sure you break them in first before passing judgement. They sounded a little tinny out of the box but after playing some different movies on loop for awhile they started sounding better and better and they put out some nice rich sound now. I can't say for the harman kardon speakers but I would definitely recommend the energy take speakers.

I have the Harman set. Love them. Recently upgraded my fronts to Polk Monitor 70s and center to CS2. Harman set shifted over to make my setup 7.1.

Ordered my speakers sunday night, delivered tueday afternoon! Excellent service and everything came nicely packaged... It was kind of sad unhooking my awesome RTi4's and csi3 but I am very happy to finally have my center channel back under my tv and speakers out of the reach of my baby.
I agree with tidoubleger with the breaking in period... when i first hooked them up I was somewhat disappointed in the sound quality...I knew I was going to a system that isn't as nice as what I had but reading the reviews I was hoping for it.... I feel i have broken them in nicely and are sounding better. This system overall sounds good for music, video games and movies, but for tv its kind of weak. Though again, my ears are used to the rti's and csi3. My wife hates the subwoofer so she always has it off for watching standard tv. Due to the size of these speakers they can't push the lower tones but once you match it with a sub the sound is awesome... I played some battlefield 3 yesterday and I was finally VERY satisfied with my purchase. I've also popped in a few movies to hear the overall surround and it sounded great. I haven't cranked the volume but I have definitely turned it up loud. The only complaint i have is the wire connections... they are tiny!! I have heard they were small so i got 100' of 16 gauge rca speaker wire at frys and the wires still were a tight squeeze into the posts... But once you get them in, I do like how they are screwed down into it and aren't going to fall out... Overall, I am very happy i got the 5.0 system from newegg for $199. The speakers sound great overall and they are the perfect for what I need them for.... I would recommend them... Though if you have space in your living room for larger speakers, I would definitely go with those instead... |
