Best price since BF price of $35!!

Thanks OP in 4 1!

Anger 01-28-2012 10:40 AM

I got one of these on BF and I can say it's a neat little device for rarely used PC's that are tucked out of the way, like my windows home server. I'm tempted to order one for the living room media server but that is on a 35' long USB extender cord so maybe I'll play around with it tonight, see if it works that way. If so, in for another one.

These are typically used with HTPCs. I have found that it works much better when the USB adapter faces the user.

Mike C 01-28-2012 12:28 PM

Thanks for the post, got a couple for the two main viewing rooms, repped! I have been using old school (and LARGE) Gyration KB and mouse, which is works well but is a PITA because it is a KB that has to be placed somewhere to be used vs. being used while being held like txting with a phone. With all of the online capabilities with the new TVs and BR players, etc., these are essential IMO instead of using standard remote to navigate the onscreen KB which is a total PITA, They should be included with the TVs (like Visio does, their remote with slide out QWERTY KB that comes with their upper line TVs is awesome, but I have LG and Panasonic, so that doesn't help me :)), I am guessing they will be soon, but in the meantime this combo fills the ticket :).

I had problems when the USB receiver was in the back. While in the front and with a clear line of site, it works really well. Granted, I am only transmitting about 10'.

nineironputt 01-28-2012 12:31 PM

In for one! my HTPC has been needing something like this. I get tired of my clunky Logitech keyboard.

Yes, I'm using it with my 2011 Mac mini, no trouble at all. It also worked fine on my iMac.

peaceburn 01-28-2012 12:58 PM

I have the prev gen, and it's very handy for HTPCs ...my only issue with it and this new one - they don't have the function keys (F1-F12) which I don't frequently use, however need once per year to boot into some usb flash (invoking the boot menu is F9 on my htpc, and the bios requires 5 changes to change the boot order, pita). Otherwise, perfect little thing, that saves so much space. Don't expect to write "War and Peace" on it, but to browse your nas and start your movie - it's golden :)

CyberAthlete 01-28-2012 12:59 PM

My suggestion go with Lenovo. I use it with my PS3 and PC and works flawlessly on both.

The difference between the ones you listed and this one is that only the Lenovo is backlit and in a dark room being able to see the keys makes all the difference.

The others make no mention of being backlit, and that is a huge deal breaker since you will need some sort of light to look at the keys. Remember when you're watching a TV/Projector screen in a dark room your eyes adjust to the bright image and when you look down at the keyboard it will be pitch black since it will be in the dark.

$38.78 shipped to CA. hope these work well with XBMC because im tired of my logitech mediaboard taking up all the space on my coffee table

Beepie 01-28-2012 01:24 PM

will this work on my xbox 360? Also I'll have to plug it into the back of my xbox. Will my range be nurfed? Also, can you type pretty fast with these or are you slowed a bit because of the size.

I agree. When I put my receiver in the USB port on the back of my HTPC the range sucked and the mouse was always jumpy, but after moving it to the front it's great. I love this thing!!

FreedomPenguin 01-28-2012 01:41 PM

last time this was around- i bought it.

got it in mail, pulld it out, saw how small and pathetic it was.

sold it for $5 + s/h to another member on here.

never used it.

fullipper 01-28-2012 02:00 PM

Looks like a historically decent price. I have two of these on two HTPCs and have been underwhelmed. They work adequately but range (even with dongle in front) is middling and the "OFN" optical finger navigation is quite disappointing. Would not buy it again although at this point I don't know what solution I would try.

exactly. I'm using it a good 20 feet away from my living room media server which powers the sixty inch tv. it works awesome. I bought one for my home server, now getting another one for the livingroom

The CE mini is a great little device. However, be aware it is not back-lit.

I just got one of these to play with as well, and so far I prefer it to the CE mini...

...but YMMV...it appears that more people (still in a minority from what I can tell) have problems with the FAVI, hence why its overall rating is slightly lower than the CE mini. The trade-offs are the CE has no back-lighting or discrete function keys...but has a larger track-pad and is therefore easier to use if you plan on doing a lot of mouse-work from the couch. Not being back-lit kills it for my use as a HTPC controller, so I returned it.... I'm sure the next version will be back-lit.

Agree on the comments about being back-lit, and the new Lenovo is a good little device. However, it lacks function keys. If that is important to you at all, then the FAVI is arguably a better device.

Depends on the TV (or Blu-Ray player), in the last couple of years TVs with apps like Amazon on Demand, Twitter, Netflix etc. support any KB inserted into one of their USB ports. For example, my LG 5600W and 50VT25 both support USB keyboards. If you are wondering about one of your TVs, just plug any USB KB into it and see what happens :). If it works with that one, it should work with this one. Mouse probably won't work though, but that isn't necessary for my application. Although, my LG came with a second Wii like remote that controls everything with a mouse like cursor instead of using the D-Pad on the main remote to move the selection box around to the different apps and menus... I wonder what will happen with one of these things plugged into the TV.

Yes works on 360. Never plugged it in the back so unsure about range .

Slow, cause it's so small.

Wow, so you looked at the size and didn't even try it, and then sold it for $5? Not sure if trolling. :shake:

I use this everyday for 3-4 hours browsing the web on my couch and I love it. Used the previous model for over a year before that. The backlight is great (as it is helping me type this message in the dark).

Protip: I turn the mouse speed all the way up in the drivers as I find the default speed too slow for the optical pad.

Buckeyefan 1 01-28-2012 06:00 PM

Got one during the BF sale. It's small. The track ball works well, but they keys are too small for my big fingers. Only takes a week to master it, so it's user friendly. But it's definitely made for smaller hands.

dn3g3l 01-28-2012 06:08 PM

Get it now. These go on sale every now and then but in a few months, not every week.

kenyee 01-28-2012 06:23 PM

I've had this for a while...not a bad device but my main cons:
- backlight is blotchy (very dim in the middle like they forgot to put an LED there)
- no function keys F1-F10 so you can't do something like Alt-F4 to close windows, or Alt-Shift-F1 in Linux
- typing in paths in Linux is a PITA because "/" is a shifted key via the alt button
- the wireless transmitter is weak (much more so than the first version w/o the backlight).
- the upper left is the Home key instead of the Escape key

The optical trackball isn't bad...there's also a scrollbar underneath it that I keep brushing by mistake..

The key issues are pretty damned annoying in Linux. If you're using Windows, you won't notice.

boomhower 01-28-2012 06:59 PM

Good luck getting it. Mine has been on back order going a month, ordered on 12/30 with a ship date of 1/14. Now it's estimating 1/31. Don't believe the 2/2 date for a second. Good deal and about what I paid but just be prepared to wait.

scandihoovian 01-28-2012 07:04 PM

Nice price, I paid $40 for this 2 months ago from Lenovo. This is the lowest I've seen it. I love mine btw, works great for the HTPC.

Sounds like you bought it expecting it to be a full size keyboard (or at least close to it), so that's your own fault for not learning about the product before buying it. This is meant for someone who wants a small form factor keyboard & mouse combo with a backlight, most likely for a home theater type setup where you aren't going to be doing a lot of typing.

I'm not certain, but it will probably work fine. keyboards are HID (human interface device) so they're about as generic as a device comes.

not kidding. you'll find me complaining from the threads i bought it in.

other guy is right, i thought this was going to be a half size keyboard, not a micro keyboard like a phone. i didnt know any better, so i do what i normally do, buy stuff, stick in a drawer and never use it, but one guy wanted it so i practically gave to him.

but yeah, i didnt like it, i have small fingers and i found it difficult

Cheesaw 01-28-2012 11:08 PM

In for one. My keyboard that came with the Asus Eee pc I use in my home theater just got a stuck key and stopped working, so this is good timing.

MonEl 01-29-2012 07:47 AM

I built a HTPC not long ago. I've been using a regular wireless keyboard and mouse with it. Will be nice to have something more compact like this to use.

BTW-for some reason I was able to select the expedited 3 day shipping and it was also free like the 5 day.

Nice Deal !

Nope... doesn't work for me... price is at $44.00 ($8.00 more).

One thing that sucks is that the will charge you 15% restocking fee if you are not happy with your purchase. So that will be $7 out of my pocket in addition to potential shipping charges.

I'm hoping that Amazon will match the $44 price (if not the $36), as I would like to buy it and try it to see if it will work for me. I hate to be stuck with an expensive paper holder.

What is the difference between this Lenovo one and the FAVI or COMPASS CE? I'm looking for a kb/mouse remote so that I can use to control the laptop and PS3 from about 10' away. The FAVI has great reviews on Amazon. The one thing I dislike is the charging system, would have preferred it use AA/AAA batteries (which I can stock up from Staples :D)

I don't understand why folks on here prefer the Lenovo over the FAVI since they are pretty much the same price.

Totally agree it's better than the previous Lenovo. If the CE was back-lit it'd just about be a perfect little HTPC remote. As it is now it's still great to use for, say, a hidden server. I need something I can use in a dimly lit environment so that's the only reason it's not perfect for me. If they come out with a back-lit version I'll snap one up.

karrun 02-02-2012 11:28 AM

Does anyone know if the receiver on the previous nonlit version should work on this version? I lost the N5902 receiver and when I tried to plug in a receiver for the non-backlit model, I can't get it to respond. Can't figure out if they aren't compatible, or if I am doing something wrong.
