CURRENTLY OOS ONLINE @ STAPLES -2012-02-12 2:14pm PST

usb 2.0

7200 RPM

Be sure to use the seagate tools to disable the sleep feature or u will run into problems with this drive.

Or, you can try this: Control Panel --> Power Options --> look for Turn Off Hard Disks & set it to Never

rydude07 02-10-2012 09:48 AM

reviews on amazon shows that this has 3 stars. Good price regardless for post flood

mmcnary 02-10-2012 09:53 AM

does anyone know if these can be taken apart and used internally? I don't kneed an external, and this is ~$100 cheaper than the same size internal drive.

Yes, you can. And more than likely, you'll get this drive inside.....

With the current climate of elevated hard drive prices, this is a fantastic deal if you need 3TB of storage.

ReadySethGo 02-10-2012 10:16 AM

There's no reason you couldn't use a $30 off $150 purchase for this. Save an extra $5 by doing so.

You are correct sir. Took 1 apart about 2 months ago and been running fine in NAS, crossing fingers....

No USB 3.0 for external

chong67 02-10-2012 10:27 AM

What happen if your drive died when you take it apart and put in in your PC?

Will it void the warranty?

============

You buy it online or pick up at the store?

If online, PM to CSR on the phone?

At the store, refer CSR to the OD website?

Soon as you crack the case, warranty is gone. So question is whether or not you can take it apart without breaking anything and making it obvious. If you've ever been at Seagate's page and seen the pictures of the stuff they refuse warranty for.... they can be a pain.

kilroy13 02-10-2012 10:30 AM

taking this 1 apart will break tabs so it will void the warranty. some of the other external don't require you to break tabs.

You go to e-junkie and buy a coupon from one of several sellers. They're basically selling fraudulent codes that they generated against Staple's coupon algorithm. Apply the coupon to your purchase. That's it.

kronus 02-10-2012 11:03 AM

What's the best order and route to buy/coupon/PM? Seems to be hit or miss.

That's a pretty funky website. Doesn't seem like they are selling coupons, seems like they are selling monthly/annual plans of some sort. Would you be able to post a link or workflow so I could follow along exactly where to go? It's clearly a deceiving site.

I've been curious about this as well. Then again if I find out I might just start wasting more $$ than I already do on SD :shake:

karrun 02-10-2012 12:15 PM

Okay, seems like you can phone in your order and they will PM to OD. But what is the possibility of my $25 coupon being rejected after the PM? I don't have any experience on this.

Ive done it before no problem over the phone. Worst case is that your coupon code wont work but dont worry youll be fine. I did this for a SB6121 cable modem that I was able to get for 65 bucks or so a little while back from staples.

Definitely do it online via chat. The following is what you should always do with a Staples PM.

Order the drive for $164.99 minus the $25 off $75 off coupon or a $30 off $150 coupon. Staples coupons work off of the original cost on their website, not what you pricematch it down to. So 164.99 - $30 is $134.99 plus tax. Place your order for that amount. Then you can immediately jump into chat. A CSR will match your original $164.99 price down to $139.99 which is a savings of $25. To summarize you'll have a charge of $139 plus tax, which for me would be $146.49. Then you PM with Staples chat, you'll get $25 plus tax back, which for me is $27.13. That refund will show up typically in 3 business days. It's a total charge of $109.99 plus tax, which is $119.36 for me.

Hope this helps...

I've done a ton of these before, they wont reject it. It's possible they reject it a B&M though. Rest easy, they won't blink an eye.

karrun 02-10-2012 12:25 PM

Okay, I'm ready to make the jump. THanks everyone for the info. Anyone read the review that the cable isn't included? What kind of cable would this take?

ActiveX 02-10-2012 12:25 PM

I've been denied before because the coupon $30 off $150 after the price match drops it below $150, therefore she said I could not use the coupon, but a $25 off $75 would work. I guess it depends on the CSR.

Interesting. I've done probably done it 2 dozen times before and never had the issue. Curious to why there would be a discrepancy like that..good to know though

lazybummm 02-10-2012 12:33 PM

if you don't need a drive RIGHT NOW, I would wait a months, prices are falling!

ciris 02-10-2012 12:33 PM

man, I spent so much dough already....I just bought a 180GB Corsair Force GT SSD from fleabay. I also bought a used 1TB WD Black Drive that still has warranty till 2015 and now I see this.....

Decisions, decisions....I already have 2 pulled external drives in my system 1x 2.5" 500GB WD Blue and a 3.5" 2TB Hitachi. I bought the 1tb drive to get rid of 3 small drives 160GB, 120GB and an 80GB drive....

Although the Segate is a good priced 3TB drive it only has a 1 year warranty on it though....... I think I just need to chill and stop spending money....

SpinControl 02-10-2012 12:36 PM

That was EASY. (Wish I had a staples EASY button around to push.) A little worried about the 30 off 150 + two rewards checks, but not questioned. Chat took less than 2 minutes.

Thanks, OP!

I've purchased over a 100 coupons from him and had problems a couple of times with it not taking the code. He always sent me a new code very quickly. Did you ask him for a replacement code?

Per his site:

>>Please redeem code ASAP. This code was verified to work properly. If there is any problem with the coupon code, please send an email immediately. Please note that you can only use one of these coupon codes for each Staples account since the codes have the same first 5-digits. Please open new Staples account if neccessary or use the guest checkout; otherwise, you may see the "Coupon Already Redeemed" message. <<

You may have to turn those few months into six or even a full year. I've read several stories about how even though the flooded HD factories are recovering and production is ramping up again, it may be a good year before prices start to drop.

Analysts say that HD makers and retailers had an excuse to raise prices after the flood, and that in retail it's more common to raise prices than lower them. Also there's only two mechanical HD manufactures now (Western Digital and Seagate) so there's really not much need to be as competitive with prices since four major producers have been reduced to two.

Question.

Do you earn rewards on all your Staples purchases even including ones made with coupons? I checked my account and haven't received rewards for any purchase even though I included my rewards info. All purchases used coupons.

I think the may work for Staples or the print shop. these are actual codes that were probably mailed to someone who may not use it and never realized someone else had the code and used them. UNLESS Staples own ejunkie. Its funny how ejunkie supposedly is a place where you buy everything but the only think they really sell is Staples coupons.

No, just send them the bare drive, it's got a 1 year warranty on it. I've done it before with no problem.

Do not send a defective unit back with the opened external, just send the bare drive.

When you can check the warranty status, just make sure you use the drives model number.. (ST3000DM001) and not the seagate expansion model number...(STAY3000100) the serial number will be the same for both. Obviously Seagate knows that they put these drives in external enclosures, but for whatever reason as long as you use the drive model number on their warranty check website, they show up as being eligible for a 1 year warranty. The ones I yanked from my go flex externals, show up as having a 2 year warranty.

External drives are only covered by the warranty if still inside of their enclosures. If you can manage to get one apart without breaking the snap-tabs (It can be done, but it is a pain), then you're golden. Otherwise, the second you break that enclosure open, you're voiding the warranty.
That said, I had a 1TB Seagate that I RMA'd four times before I got one that didn't come to me with enough bad sectors to freeze any machine I plugged it into. I ripped this last one out and stuck it in a machine -- the shipping ended up costing me as much as the drive did initially! To add insult to annoyance, the returned drives no longer carry the balance of the remaining warranty. Nope. They carry their own 90-day warranties and that's it.

...but a 3TB drive for $115? Yeah, I'll bite! ^-^

maleorderbride 02-10-2012 04:44 PM

I understand that. That is Seagate's official policy. I guess I didn't explain myself well enough in my previous post. While that my be seagates policy, my personal experience is that they either don't enforce it or don't have the tracking capability in their RMA process yet. I have removed a seagate HD from an external enclosure and installed it in my desktop, it went bad, I checked the warranty status using the Hard Drive model# (not the enclosure model number), it qualified for warranty. I sent the HD in as a bare drive only, and two weeks later I received a replacement refurbed bare drive.

And you're right, It stinks that the replacements only come with a 90 day warranty.

Anyone know if this 3TB drive can be used in a box running WHS? Is there a capacity limit per drive with WHS?

Currently using an HP EX495. Thanks.

in for 1 thanks op. let me share another secret to save a bit of money on staples items, which leads me to a question.
if you go to discover.com and purchase items from staples through discover's rewards section, you get 5% cashback. The 5% cashback can be used to purchase $25 staples giftcards for $20 in cashback dollars. So you are buying giftcards with free money (cashback) and buying them at a discount (even better). Of course, must use the discover card.

So as a result of this method, I have two $25 staples giftcards I dusted off for this transaction. I was upset to find they could not be used online, only in stores. Is this common knowledge? Does anyone know if its possible to cash these giftcards out in light of this transaction? Can I do a return/rebuy at a retail location, while preserving my 25/75 coupon? Any advice would be appreciated.

WHS v1 has a capacity limit of 2TB. You will have to use GPT partitions to utilize anything more than 2.19TB.

You can have 3 TB drives in WHS v1, follow this guide: GPT, 3TB, WHS v1 [hardforum.com]

Dang it... called to price match, they removed coupon (30 off 150)...which actually makes it more expensive :P time to cancel. I dont know if I want to risk another 30 off 150 coupon or go the safe route with $25 off 75

dang...called back, they are closed now. hmm...well i guess ill do 25 off 75 and call in tomorrow. Once a coupon is removed from an order it is still considered used, correct? so it won't let me use it again?

frank10b 02-10-2012 08:21 PM

It can be instantly done by a phone call. Just provide the item# from office depot.
The price match do take days to show up according to the CSR.

I've been denied before because the coupon $30 off $150 after the price match drops it below $150, therefore she said I could not use the coupon, but a $25 off $75 would work. I guess it depends on the CSR.

I'd take issue with one part of that- DON'T PLACE THE ORDER!!! Setup the order, but don't complete it before you chat up Staples and obtain the rep's assent to do the PM. That way, if they do deny the PM, you don't have to cancel the order/lose the coupon/wait for cc room to clear. Instead, you can just disconnect and chat again to get a more agreeable rep. Rinse and repeat until you get approved. So don't take rejection as a final ruling.

I am indebted to collective wisdom of those on the Staples Nook PM AC Deals Consolidation thread. I only pass along what has been shared with me.

smeverson 02-11-2012 06:20 AM

Just completed the deal.
With no disrespect to the above poster, just purchase the item and use your coupon. I called and spoke with CSR. They already are aware of the OD sale price and asked no questions. They gave no problems and instantly gave the refund. This was done very easily.

Thanks OP!

smeverson 02-11-2012 06:26 AM

CSIG1001 02-11-2012 11:28 AM

Ok just to give you guys a heads up who dont know about seagate drives..

I just bought 4 from amazon last week for 149.00 no tax free prime shipping. , 3tb USB 3.0 expansion which contain the DM001 these drives that retail for 229 on Newegg with a 1 year warrenty.

anyway

These drives will overheat in these expansion enclosures which will reduce the life especially the USB 2.0 version which contain 5 platters!. You must remove them or they will die eventually. Thats why the crappy ratings.. The DM001 which is found in the USB 3.0 version is the best seagate drive out there . It has 3 platters 1tb each on the inside.. The USB 2.0 version has the STAY drive "dont have full model number sorry, but hate to burst your bubbles its been discontinued. because this drive has 5 , 600GB platters which are more prone to failure also is slower then the DM001.
Do yourself a favor and spend the extra money could be 15-20 bucks more and get the DM001 , you are getting a obsolete drive.
This has gone on for 4 pages and you guys think you are getting a good drive , well your not.. If the drive was 80 bucks id consider it. well maybe not since the DM001 is out.
Have a good day

update i just checked amazon they are sold out now and they are selling the Expansion USB 3.0 for 164.99 were 149.00 last week "sorry"
I also took a look at staples , no expansion seagate usb 3.0 . which were selling for 164.99 + 25 off +tax 7-9 days ago.
If you want the DM001 drive the go flex is another option but its not on sale.. Better enclosure

I only spent 20 bucks more going with 4 Seagate USB 3.0 Expansions from amazon for 149.00 vs staples last week when they had the USB 3.0 version for 164.99 after paying for coupons and tax.

Looks like to me they are getting rid of all the obsolete drives CHEAP due to them being prone to failure. If you bought this USB 2.0 seagate expansion drive you did not do your research.. The DM001 drive is what you want less prone to failure , and higher resale valure , better performance ., i would not risk putting data on these , especially inside the enclosure.. this should be a thumbs down thread.

CSIG1001 02-11-2012 11:51 AM

Bump for awareness

Amazon link

when it was on sale
and i am sure it will come back on sale in a few weeks prices are dropping ..
Dont GET THE USB 2.0 version!

Just got mine and it does come with a usb cable. Used SIW and checked the serial number of the internal drive it shows up as OEM which means no warranty if you crack it open. I knew this would most likely be the case going in. I've already cracked it open and got the XT drive inside to put in my desktop. Sweet Deal, if it lasts me a while.
