SinneR1 02-21-2012 04:37 AM

yea buddy.... will look nice next to the old black and gold dvd collection.

decarillion 02-21-2012 04:58 AM

The first review for this product refers to a fifth disc, which makes me wonder just which set is being reviewed LOL This set only has four, according to the info Amazon gives.

That said, I was happy to see this morning's email and so, I've ordered. I've been watching it for awhile, both on Amazon and Amazon UK. It would seem that the UK set comes in a box, with four slim cases, but has the same content. It's always been priced better than our Amazon, though. Even now, it's not much more than this set is.

Look again, just below the review title it says "This review is from: The Godfather: The Coppola Restoration (DVD)"

Amazon has a habit of mixing up DVD and blu-ray reviews of the same title.

tranceFusion 02-21-2012 05:46 AM

I have the first 2 Individually and don't care for the 3rd. Any point in upgrading to this? Is the 4th disc full of special features?

Disc 4 is chuck full of extra content. You get a lot of bang for your buck.

fasttrack410 02-21-2012 06:15 AM

In 4 1

ddotdukes 02-21-2012 06:45 AM

I jumped on it...why not

GreekShoppr 02-21-2012 06:46 AM

Just to be clear this is all three movies?

fitftw 02-21-2012 06:49 AM

yes, all 3 movies. This would be a nice gift for my dad, or myself. Hmmm...not buying 2...who to buy for...I'm gonna say that I'd get more out of it since I've only seen the first one and I was very young. Would be cool to see them all for basically the first time, in 1080p.

Edit: Not such a slick deal. Searched on ebay and found a couple for just a few bucks more. Like this one for $27.90 shipped http://www.ebay.com/itm/new-Godfa...4162d45ea0 That's the UK version but it's the 1080p that matters, not the thickness of the Blu-ray boxes themselves. $31 US version http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Godfa...5d31de5e1a

This deal is nice though if you need it asap, otherwise it's okay to skip it. Tempting to use my credit card for this frivolous purchase.

Never. I've been keeping an eye on the price since it came out - $35 is the lowest I've seen it on Amazon, though I heard it went to $28 once. Usually it hovers around $40. I'd say if you want it, now's the time. (I just bought it this morning myself).

gulo 02-21-2012 08:22 AM

in for 1, I have never seen this movie and according to bluray.com this is the lowest price ever

freduke 02-21-2012 08:28 AM

hmm came out to $25 exactly, I thought amazon charged CA tax?

and why does it say it ships in 7-10 business days? boo!

I'm not saying this is a reason to switch (because it's not), just commenting on the difference - the US version is a slim box/single case vs the UK's multi-case fat box.

Personally I dislike UK packaging because of the garish ratings insignia which are a real eyesore, especially when they're on the spines (thankfully absent in this case).

airplnmdls 02-21-2012 09:01 AM

Soo update... I bought this about 28 days ago on Amazon when i saw it for $35 here. My worse case scenario was to buy it today for $25, and return the "old" one for my $35... Fortunately I did not need to do this...it took a couple of CSRs but I was able to get a credit! If you are in the same situation you should try it too!

Amazon starts charging sales tax for orders shipped to California from September, 2012 onwards. Till then, better stock up and buy everything you need or think you will need, or are not sure whether you need.

This graph will show you its pricing back to 2008. Average over its entire life is calculated at $58.

EDIT: Uh oh, it's blocking my link. You can search for it at www. camel camel camel .com to see the graph. Don't know if there's anything shady about this site, that slickdeals blocks it. I've never had a problem with it in the past.

Yes it is. For the DVD set, Godfather 2 required two discs for a total of five.
With Blu-ray it only needed one, so one less disc. The last disc is for the same special features in both sets. I'm not sure if the upgrade is worth it, it depends on your home theater as it is a very dark movie, but a price of only $25 is pretty compelling.

BTW, the audio commentaries by Coppola are great, especially for Godfather 1. A classic now but it was very hard to make at the time and his stories are fascinating.

The restoration is excellent, considering the deterioration of the source material. Don't expect the picture quality of a modern film, though.

I stepped up from the DVD set to the Blu Ray set, and the quality of the Blu Ray blows it away. I always thought the transfer of the DVD set was pretty poor.

user_mat 02-21-2012 01:51 PM

Part 3 had two major problems: Sophia Coppola's acting and that Michael could somehow forgive Kay even after all these years for the abortion of their son. I can live with Robert Duvall's character "disappearing" as people can grow apart. Other than that I find it to be a pretty entertaining movie. Not nearly as good as parts 1 & 2 but not nearly as bad as it's reputation. Andy Garcia gives a pretty good performance and I think the ending is still heart wrenching.

Let me beg to differ...

It's worse than its reputation.

- Sophia was not near the big problem with the movie.
- Duvall is the only other heavy hitter, and you leave him out? So many possibilities lost. Unforgivable.
- Keaton was horrible
- Joe Mantegna was worse than horrible.
George Hamilton? Guido Sarducci?
- Eli Wallach somehow managed to have no gravitas.
- They took Pacino from a dapper don to a crew cut raspy voiced... smfh

and the plot was horrible.

Other than that it was fine I guess. (except they took one of the biggest opportunities for greatness and buried it)

BTW: - Joe Mantegna was worse than horrible!!!!!! He seemed like some bad Italian gangster parody.

user_mat 02-21-2012 06:36 PM

Hey man, we all know that Coppola did GF3 because of the money. We all know that it was a film that was never meant to be made. With that said, I don't think it's that bad on it's own merits. I find it entertaining. Maybe you don't. No big deal. I haven't read it but from what I've heard Puzo's original Godfather novel was pretty pulpy. I know it's kind of a lame comparison but The Godfather films remind me the original Star Wars trilogy. The first films were lightning in the bottle, all the right elements coming together. The second films elevated the source material above their pulpy roots and are widely considered the best in their respective trilogies. The third films fall in a distant 3rd. I suppose Return of the Jedi was a necessary film to conclude things, but 75% of it feels like filler and watered down. Talk about mediocre acting, ROTJ has it in spades. Same goes for GF3. Not really necessary, could of been (a lot) better. GF3 was also made during Coppola's later years, way past his prime.

:-)

You can decide for yourself. You're definitely in for a treat with the first two. Just do yourself a favor and watch them at night with no distractions. They're long, and not the type of thing you want to watch while holding your smart phone.

...and although I meant every word of my review, isn't to be taken personally if you liked III. It's just that I love the first two and take the third personally. Liking number three also makes you crazy.

Threre aren't too many movies you can pull out every two or three years and truly enjoy them all over again, but the first two of the Godfather certainly are, along with the likes of Cool Hand Luke, The Shawshank Redemption, Forest Gump and yes--Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory! (with Gene Wilder)

My son gets the old DVD boxed set, I'll take the Blu-Rays...

Duval was growing a part--his hair was going south faster than a San Diego bank robber!

I agree somewhat with the poster you are pokin' fun of. I wouldn't give a crap if we never knew about Vito Corleone's childhood. Really slows the movie down and drags it out IMO.

Same here. The first film is/was epic. The second was almost as good. The third, well, let's just say what pushed me over the edge was the fourth disc full of extras.

I was hoping that by now they would have released the Complete Epic on blu that NBC ran in the mid-late 80's where Coppola edited 1 & 2 into one single story which it is anyway, and I thought it was a great way to watch it.

1 and 2 are good. skip 3 if you value your time.

Smart man clarifying that or you'd have taken a SlickDeals verbal beating. I'd be scared to meat anyone who liked the remake.

Why doesn't this include this?http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1584131/

LOL

Ok...I have to admit it too... I'm 38 and have never seen any of these. So for this price for a complete collection with a bonus disc to boot, I'm definitely in 4 one at this price!

yes, all 3 movies.

How is it not a slick deal? You seem to make the point that even to get close to the price (still higher)... you'd need to accept a substitute. The prices you found are both higher... I'd much rather purchase from a reputable seller like amazon and get it quickly than pay MORE and hassle with Ebay...

Lame...

36 here and I haven't seen them either, wasn't sure there was another man that hadn't seen them either. Agree, price can't be beat.
