be aware on expiration date bought mine a week ago and EXP date was April 2013

This deal is STILL ACTIVE (13 Mar 11:15am, left coast time). Just a back ordered item now. Same discount. Guessing the expiration date mentioned earlier will be much improved if this is a new manufacturing run.

I bought a giant bottle from walgreens years ago. It's good to have around.

I take 4-5 at a time (not very often, ibuprofen is so weak even at that level) and if someone is over and has a headache or w/e, then you look like a nice guy.

I'd rather buy it in bulk and not have to rebuy for a long time. I don't enjoy running to the store every other day unlike this mentally handicapped nation of half-wits haha.

You don't have to. This side effect of ibuprofen is well known. That's why you take it only when you absolutely needed and in the absolute minimal amounts possible.
For that purpose, here is usage label that you follow.

Unless you're running a pharmacy, what could you possibly need 1000 ibuprofen tablets for?
These things do go bad with time.

Wyndhamscams 03-11-2012 01:16 AM

Drugs don't go bad. They just lose effectiveness. Random numbers here, but say I've had my bottle for 3.5 yrs past expiration. Then, the ibuprofen would only be 75% as effective compared to new.

Wel then find you a liver on slickdeals!! :bounce::bounce:

But seriously guys.....Do not underestimate the side effects of Ibuprofen, for that matter of all the NSAIDS..
2000 mg per day for a few years is required for End stage Renal Disease....Irreversible kidney damage starts way before that...Worst thing, the symptoms will be so subtle its hard to detect until significant damage has already occured...

Stay OFF this deal...The pills would expire way before any one person would need to ingest so many...And if you do, you are screwed anyways.....:bulb:

Hellyea 03-11-2012 07:46 AM

max dose is 800mg. don't take > 4 every 6 hours and that's in extreme cases.

Why don't we all just huddle in a dark corner in the fetal position for the rest of our lives because everything out there is going to kill us?

Everything is either a carcinogen, is going to make us fat, is going to make us die early, is going to affect our ability to reason -- ad infinitum.

Obviously no sane person is going to ingest this bottle at an expedited rate to succumb to organ failure. This quantity is probably viable in a large setting like an office. And if it's an individual buying this, he/she is probably sick of going to the pharmacy and picking up a 100 pill bottle for the same price.

In actuality, anyone can go into a Costco and buy alcohol and pharmacy items without a membership (and no upcharge either). You just have to tell them at the front entrance that you are just buying booze or getting a prescription filled. They will send you over to the membership desk for a guest pass. It's possible that the laws also cover OTC medicines as well so that may be why you did not get the upcharge on the OTC medicine.

We've had our Executive Membership for years. Our annual rebate has never been less than $119 (this year). Some years it's been well over $200 so we basically NEVER have to pay for our membership and always get some cash back to boot.

Even if your annual rebate was only $55, you would still not be any worse off than having paid $55 for a basic membership ($110 Executive membership minus a minimum $55 rebate = the same $55 you'd pay for a basic membership). Any Executive rebate over $55 and you are saving money over the basic membership cost. In our case, getting $119 rebate this year paid for the $100 membership cost and put $19 free money in our pocket. We also got $76 back from our Costco AMEX card (more free money). We never carry a balance on the AMEX card and pay it in full every month.

3Wire 03-11-2012 10:07 AM

Here's another good deal for non-members (and members who may have missed them. On Costco's web site, you can download all of their annual Cookbooks in PDF form onto your computer. There are 10 Cookbooks (2002-2011) and 2 Household Almanac's (2007-2008) and they are completely free. I like free!

Here is the link, books are on the right hand side (2011 is more to the middle).

Yea, the office administrator at my work stocks stuff like this.

That's the only good reason to buy something like this IMO. I can't imagine one person or even a family of four needing this much. I bought 80-count bottle about 2 years ago, and I still have half the bottle left. Unlike some people around here, I intend to keep my liver going for several more decades.

Wow, really? I only got $22 back and switched over to the basic membership. I think I don't buy enough processed foods to really get my money's worth from Costco. It's awesome for cat litter, paper towels, and whatnot like that.

True. I've read about this as well.

Check out the results of an FDA study [harvard.edu]:

"Most of what is known about drug expiration dates comes from a study conducted by the Food and Drug Administration at the request of the military. With a large and expensive stockpile of drugs, the military faced tossing out and replacing its drugs every few years. What they found from the study is 90% of more than 100 drugs, both prescription and over-the-counter, were perfectly good to use even 15 years after the expiration date."

So don't be slamming these pills just because they expire next year.

Yup, the US Army did a study on the effectiveness of drugs past the expiry date and most last at least 10-15 years longer

This is basically a half price sale and thus a good deal. In my local grocery store even generics for this in quantity of 1000 would probably be priced in the ballpark of $10-12. Free shipping and all, it is good for those who need the occasional medicine for pain/headache.

Thanks OP for the heads up.

Holy misinformation batman. Ibuprofen is in a class of NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) alon gwith Naproxen (aleve), aspirin, indomethacin (dont worry about it) and others.

It works on the COX pathway and will jack up your kidneys over time, not your liver. You do need a chronic amount to have GI symptoms (ulcer) and only aspirin will give you the antiplately effect for hearth health. unfortunately, the effect is additive on the kidneys.

that being said, if you need it you need it, if you can go without... then by all means. this isnt medical school though, this is slickdeals and 1000pills at this price is a good buy.

kasedian 03-11-2012 12:51 PM

While this may be true in many cases, one should still exercise caution before determining (fill in the blank) medicine will be fine after the exp date. For example, taking antibiotics of the tetracycline class is absolutely dangerous and can quickly have toxic side effects due to its natural breakdown over time past its exp date. Of course, you should never have your antibiotic left over for that long because you should always finish the prescription unless otherwise told by your physician/pharmacist.

pug_ster 03-11-2012 01:06 PM

Brought this about 3 years ago for $8 for 1000 pills. I didn't need it and sold the bottle of 500 of them to my co-worker. I still have alot of them and couldn't use them all.

travelking1 03-11-2012 01:09 PM

That's a lot of pills for, I guess, a headache.

Just_one 03-11-2012 01:25 PM

I've been having a backache for the past few months. I was advised by my doctor to take a total of 12 (3 at 4x a day) 200mg. ibuprofens a day for 10 days. That really didn't have a signifcant improvement so I'm taking only 2 a day now for what is likely a long term. The pain diminishes as the day goes on and hopefully physical therapy will provide relief eventually.
In for one order.

People are addicted to the very own medicine that is killing them... All conventional medicine may hide the symptoms, but they cause another problem, which there is more medicine for, which will cause another problem etc... This is not a Slickdeal, unless you have stocks invested in the pharmaceutical companies ...

I once had to take four of these every four hours around the clock to treat very bad pain from a broken tooth. Even the maximum dosage often wasn't enough. This went on for weeks. The tooth is fixed now, but damn! It sucks that so many doctors and dentists refuse to prescribe narcotics for bad dental pain. The evil vermin at the DEA don't care about pain treatment, kidney failure from forced NSAID overdoses or other health problems. They just want to impose their violent tyranny on Americans and gloat as they collect their bloated government pensions at the ages of 50.

Be that as it may. This is a good deal for people who simply have to use non-narcotic painkillers because of 'fraidy-cat doctors who don't want to go to prison for allegedly over-prescribing effective pain drugs.

I feel bad for those addicted to pain meds.. 1,000 tablets is huge.

I know it's difficult to imagine, but some people here make purchases for families and other groups of people. When there's greater than one person, larger quantities make more sense.

I was going to say the EXACT same thing!

Don't overgeneralize that all drugs just simply lose potency past the expiry date.

And the tetracycline class is one classic example!

Edit: I did read the report, and while they did say that it's "controversial" to make that conclusion, I still wouldn't take my chances. There are chemicals that do break down over time (and from other factors like UV/light exposure or temperature fluctuations) and their molecular structures might change or degrade to other forms that can lead to undesirable effects.

Which doctor has told you to take 5 tablets at a time (1000mg), that's above the prescription strength...not a smart thing to do.

It gets eliminated through the kidney's, not the liver. Perhaps you're thinking of acetaminophen?

Oh, now things are coming to me.

You reported it because of your choice of political party, and I offended you. I guess you got lucky that the mod that reviewed shared your belief. The way I see it, if this topic was being moderated for being Off-Topic there would be a lot more deleted but since I decided to make it political, it got that political touch from a moderator.

So therefore, I will mod-alert my own post and hope whoever comes in here and reads this, moderates the WHOLE topic and not just my posts. However, this is not my first rodeo.

Was I wrong for trying to bring political humor into this thread? Most likely, but I was also just following up on the joke when someone said they would pass them around at college, so I am sorry my political humor offended you.

Friends?

AznCracker 03-11-2012 07:09 PM

They are most likely about to expire. Saw the same thing on some eyedrops, but they were about to expire in a few months. I mean if you could use 1000 pills in about a year, go for it.

Sporatica 03-11-2012 07:15 PM

Same here. I was waiting for the surcharge to be added - never was

Perfect sized for zombie apocalypse stockpile rations... For 5.99 at a regular grocery store youd be lucky to get 100 tablets much less 1000! Costco rules.

Even if the expiration date is in the next couple of years they are probably still good, and effective at pain relief for 5-10 or so years after expiration...

Thanks OP.

100 pack generic brand ibuprofen from any drug store costs ~ 5 bucks , why take the risk of buying 1000 tablets and use it beyond the expiration date?

chong67 03-11-2012 07:24 PM

I got like 24 tablet free at Target the other day. It will expire before I get to 1 or 2. I hardly take any medication. Maybe 4-5 miles of walking and running helps? See my sig.

If you read the article posted in this thread, you'll understand that drugs with expiration dates don't carry any risks. The only issue with expired drugs is the potency left in them.

ShawnaC123 03-11-2012 08:25 PM

Thanks...got a years supply of the generic Zyrtec for 16.71 shipped without a membership.

Usually pay around 19 dollars for a three months supply of generic brand, depending on where I get it.

"2 Bottles of 500-count Kirkland Signature 200-mg Ibuprofen Tablets USP" is $8.99 - $5 = $3.99 in Costco B&M.
Just checked my receipt from 2 weeks back.

Zyrtec is Certizine, Allegra is Fexofenadine, Claritin is Loratadine, they all allergy medicines different active ingredient but generally treat same common symtoms, one will work better on a patient than the other, just up to consumer to choose which works best for them

I agree. I find Allegra works the best for me. However, the Zyrtec/ certizine works almost as well and is a LOT cheaper.

horrible horrible advice. while in THIS case, the only issue with expiration is that it will lose efficacy, there are drugs out there which turn poisonous if used beyond their expiration date. Please do NOT make broad generalizations about important things like medications or healthcare unless you are a professional. You are misleading the public. Just because 'others' on this thread have said it, doesn't make it true. in general, you really should not be using expired medications. even if they just have lower potency, you may end up taking more which may increase the amount of side effects you experience, some of which are very detremental to your health.

And what do you think constitute the other 25%? The degradants that will cause adverse side-effects.

Yes, I agree. But see it this way: You take one 200mg tablet which is well past its expiration date, you don't see any improvement in your pain relief, so you take another one or two, still no cure.. when you go see your doctor ,if she asks how much ibuprofen did you take, you won't be able to come up with a number and the doctor won't be able to treat you as she doesn't know exactly how much milligrams of 'active' ingredient you took and how much has lost its potency. Here and there we can try to save a couple of bucks but my humble opinion.. shouldn't be done when it comes to health.

Ib is hard on your kidneys. Tylenol/Apap/Acetaminophen is what is hard on your liver.

Edit: couple people beat me to it.

Is anyone else's Ibuprofen still stuck in 'fulfillment'?

traderljp 03-20-2012 07:33 AM

yep, mine is still in fullfillment as well.

I ordered the ibuprofen early in the deal while it was still in stock. I called late last week to check on it and was told it was on backorder, but would DEFINITELY ship this Monday (which was yesterday). Needless to say, nothing shipped yesterday. Oh, well...hopefully it will get here sooner or later.

Teraman 03-20-2012 08:48 AM

I just called Costco online and they told me they expected the shipment in today and if they got it they would send it out today.
