Amanah Tech - Free VPS - Toronto Based Server

1 Attachment(s)
Looks like it is dead again - last time they went out of stock it took ~1 day to get more, so I recommend checking back in tomorrow.

No credit card is required, and there were 133 left in the free tier after I registered.

Specs:
  • 1GB of hard drive space
  • 128MB of RAM
  • 100GB bandwidth at 100Mbps
  • OpenVZ
  • Hosted in Toronto

Sign up link [amanah.com]

More Details:
http://www.96mb.com/free-vps-out-of-toronto/
http://www.lowendtalk.com/discuss...toronto/p1

These are being manually activated, but they should be activated within a few hours, and you will get the server details emailed to you. If it isn't, send a ticket to support (after 3 hours mine wasn't activated, and I received my server details within 2 minutes of submitting a ticket).

I'm not sure how long the free vps is good for, but their support says it is "hard to see" how long it will last, and it is first come first serve.

NOTE: No Gmail/Hotmail and other free email service allowed for sign up, you will need a company email address.

DEAD 3:20AM EST
Amanah Tech added 800 accounts available @ 11:40PST.

LowEndBox.com has some helpful guides on configuring these to work properly with a low amount of ram:
Here's a wordpress setup guide: http://www.lowendbox.com/blog/wor...endscript/

Lopportunity 03-20-2012 11:19 AM

Can't complain if it's free. But 1GB is really tiny!

sdmahoney 03-20-2012 11:24 AM

What are you running on this with only 128MB of RAM?

You can actually run a surprising amount on only 128mb. I have lighttpd, php5, and mysql hosting 3 different sites (a phpbb forum, wordpress blog, and a drupal site). They aren't high traffic, but it seems to handle all of that fine while using ~100mb of ram.

Here's one of the sites: http://www.tuxguides.com/

If you are comfortable on the linux command line, this thing is perfect for hosting a few small sites, or just as a small server to play around with. Check out LowEndBox.com [lowendbox.com] for some guides and such on setting it up.

It sounds like they are using this to get their name out there, and according to support they aren't sure how long it will last, but it sounds like they plan to keep it for a while.

hwyking 03-20-2012 11:57 AM

Thanks! Just got my server login information.

stettin 03-20-2012 12:09 PM

Gave it a try, couldn't hurt for free.. was 30 left when I signed up

jbyrd117 03-20-2012 12:21 PM

Could someone potentially use this as a seedbox? (lol even though the torrents would be small)

prvns 03-20-2012 12:22 PM

Thanks a lot :)

AstonM 03-20-2012 12:26 PM

4 Left when I signed up, thanks OP, going to use this for a testing server

timironi 03-20-2012 12:27 PM

Would make a good squid proxy or teamspeak/vent server.

OOS though.

Rattor 03-20-2012 12:27 PM

-10 available now.

That's right. It says negative 10 available.

:p

It's on the low end in terms of ram and such, and you only have ~500mb of space left after the os is installed.

Plus seedboxes tend to be pretty IO intensive, and we don't want to abuse this free service, and get it shut down.

seywhut 03-20-2012 12:28 PM

Sweet! Thanks OP! Repped! Hopefully I get my login details right away. Does anybody know if they'll give out dedicated IPs?

prvns 03-20-2012 12:29 PM

repped OP BTW

Yup, they are dedicated IPs.

Looks like it is out of stock - I'd keep an eye out in case they add more.

Network throughput on these is pretty good (~9.8MB/s)
Disk IO isn't so great right now, but I'm assuming this will improve since they are still installing new ones for people:

Did you submit a help ticket online? I waited a few hours, never received my server details, so I sent them a message, and heard back in like two minutes with the details.

Also, this is alive again.

Azaria90 03-21-2012 09:22 PM

thanks, reps to UP, TU.

Thanks OP. Will be great for setting up an online resume and detailing my work. Already got a domain name to satisfy trialpay for some software I was after. So $10 spent on the domain name and free hosting equals happy me! :)

~600 when I signed up

Still 543 available. Just got one. Thanks OP

We'll have to see huh.

It would be real fun when they decide to kill the Free accounts. I'm not gonna waste time on this.

Eman. 03-21-2012 10:54 PM

In for one Thanks OP Repped :D

Palrascal 03-21-2012 11:01 PM

You can't really have any proper site running on these specs. Anymore than 20 people browsing a site running on php and sql would hit snail pace loading.

Agreed - I have several sites hosted on a server with 128mb (very similar to this one), and it seems to operate pretty well with php, lighttpd, a mailserver, and mysql. With proper caching in drupal and wordpress things are running pretty smoothly so far. I did a few stress tests on it, and it seemed to handle those pretty well.

I initially tried signing up with a gmail account, and it gave me some sort of error, so I tried again with my isp email account, and it worked fine.

Good point, its a shared server too so you are even guaranteed the hardware performance. As this is free its a good deal but i wouldn't pay more than $5 a month for this sort of configuration.

Going to guess they'll purge it and add it back to the free quota... Hope not though, I could use the host.

I still haven't heard from amanah after getting the confirmation email (12:03AM PST), and as the OP suggested I opened and ticket for a status follow up and bitterly 1 minute later on the dot I got a reply that my vps server was ready. Talk about quick response......

Thanks OP

Yeah, I am not sure why the tickets are required, but they are definitely very fast at following up on any tickets opened.

Yep same results. My service was pending still today. I sent them a ticket request and within 30 minutes a tech activated and I was ready to go.

I assume that with manual activation, they are going to do the ones that people create a ticket for first. The people that signed up for free but didn't send a ticket might not actually use it right away and therefore can be done later.

bartecky 03-22-2012 10:35 AM

Is it possible to set up VPN on this server?

If so, do you have any VPN on VPS for Dummies, step-by-step instruction?

stettin 03-22-2012 01:05 PM

Hey everyone, just a tip, if you rebuild your OS, you need to use the console to reset your root password. Mine was built with CentOS, but I reloaded it with Ubuntu because I'm more familiar with that.

How do you install Ubuntu on a 1GB with 128ram?

You can install the minimal image, which is something like 30mb (I think). And from there, you can install only the programs you need and that'll help save some space.

It was an option under the control panel. CentOS 32bit, Debian 64bit, Ubuntu 64bit. After loading Ubuntu, I noticed the memory utilization went up. I might go back to CentOS if I run out of memory. As for disk space, I have over 500MB free.

For those still waiting, I highly doubt they are going to spin up 1000 free accounts automatically. I concur with a post above that they are going to do it manual to make sure people don't just lose interest and then the resources are being wasted. Open a support ticket at: https://support.amanah.com/clientarea.php

Send them a message via the support tool asking what the status of you account is. I did that when I setup my account, and they replied within a few minutes with the account details.

Damn, I think they just deleted my account. I submitted a ticked and requested that my order be activated, the next day, I login and it says Login Details Incorrect, so I try password reset, enter my email and it says "No client account was found with the email address you entered."

I thought it comes with 128MB memory but when I signed into the control panel, I only have 64MB of memory and 128MB of burst memory which is not the same.

Is this what you have as well?

You can do plenty of stuff on linux with 128MB of memory.

More importantly, this gives you access to processing power of 2 X 2.0 GHz Quad Xeon CPUs.

Yeah, I noticed that too. They must consider the burst memory as the actual amount of memory. Most other providers seem to spec the regular memory, and burst memory separately.

Okay, then it's not just me. I don't know if I should complain because it's free and they probably know that we only got 64BM. But 128MB of burst memory should not be advertised as 128MB memory.

I am probably going to just leave it since it is free - if I paid for it, I would definitely say something. I am using a $15 a year 128mb/256mb burst vps through buyvm.net instead, which has been working pretty well for me.

I'm going to use this vps for other stuff most likely. I've been looking for a vpn installation guide, so if anyone finds a good one, I am interested.

If you guys figure out how to setup an OpenVPN server let me know. I currently pay about $60/year for VPN access through several different countries (which I have a feeling I'm going to have to use as my primary on my router soon before US ISPs start snitching), but would like a nice dedicated one I have control over in Canada.

I think you might be better off with a pptp server.. It's a little easier to setup since you don't need to do all the certificates and it supports more devices natively.

Rolling your own VPN is well worth it, but I probably wouldn't rely on a free OpenVZ server as my primary VPN.
btw, what OS are you on?

Well you need to get amanah to enable tun/tap kernel drivers for OpenVPN (maybe pptpd as well) but apparently they won't do it on the free accounts.

Hmm that's right.. Another good reason to go with a xen or kvm server instead of openvz!

freek 03-24-2012 02:53 PM

They started with the usual list of distributions that you could install, but none of the them would install except CentOS 32 bit and the 64 bit Debian and Ubuntu. So they removed all the others from the list.

When they started the promotion, it was 128MB/128MB. 2 days ago, they downgraded it to a 64MB/128MB OpenVZ VPS (probably to take more signups).

JBYoung 03-24-2012 07:26 PM

My account and order have disappeared.

bartecky 03-25-2012 12:15 PM

For last three days I've been trying to get server details from them.
Status of the activation is pending.
I think they are overwhelmed (free is free), but I would at least expect to receive something from them.

I got no reply from my email. The login for the client area doesn't seem to show up unless you click on an "order server" link. Then you can log in and open a support ticket. Once I opened up a support ticket, I got my VPS within 24 hrs. Still waiting to get a rejection for my tun/tap interface.

I put a ticket in last week, but still have not heard back, nor do I see any services listed under my account. Not the best way to attract new business.

Hi,

We have received your order for the Free VPS but right now we are overwhelmed by the amount of orders we are getting. We are in the process of setting up new VPS servers and we should be able to send you the login information by the end of the week.

Regards,

Amanah Support

Huh, I never agreed to spamming reviews. I'll see if they try and take mine away. I only have enough memory to run a small TeamSpeak server right now. I'm not sure what else I'd use it for since they don't allow VPN interfaces.

joogle 04-03-2012 11:27 AM

has anyone set up a VPN yet through this site?

joogle 04-04-2012 07:52 AM

I signed up for their original promo but my account always said pending.

I email them to process it , they say that limited time offer is full.

and now they offer me this BS.

"You can sign up and get your free vps by requesting it through our new portal"

http://freevps.amanah.com

Basically give them free marketing for an account

is this worth it?

This place is a joke.. They allowed for 100+ accounts at signup.. Then they never delivered. I gave them time to get it ready.. But it still wasn't ready yesterday.. So I submitted a ticket and got the same reply as you.. to signup again for a lower memory account.

I think they deserve a negative review on WHT/Google/etc....

There has been nothing positive about this company I could think of. False promises, slow support responses (24+ hours), ...

xur17 07-02-2012 04:20 PM

Did anyone else abruptely have their vps disabled? I noticed that mine was down this morning, and my account login no longer works (it says the username doesn't exist if I click forgot password).

I sent them an email, but haven't heard anything. I suppose it is time for me to review them on WHT/Google...

My VPS was disabled as of this week as well. I have an outstanding email out to their support team (going on three days now) so it seems they are being quite unreliable.

Oh well, was nice while it lasted. All I could really get running on it of any use was a TeamSpeak server. I'll most likely be setting up a home server soon, so I'm not too disappointed. Would have been nice to get some type of warning though.

sdmahoney 08-01-2012 12:09 PM

I never got mine. I sent in support requests and they kept promising to get it up and running, but they were overloaded, and never did. I definitely would not do business with this company.

hwyking 08-01-2012 12:23 PM

I got mine but didn't know what to do with it, lol.

Amanah Tech
Hi,

This is to inform you that due to abuse/spam we will be discontinuing the free vps service on 28 September 2012. Please take backup of your data before that.

Regards,

Amanah Support

give them a bad review, they have horrible support

stettin 09-21-2012 01:02 PM

They killed mine a few months ago with no warning. I opened up a ticket with no response. I got the email again today. I felt like responding with a "thanks for reminding me you suck", but instead deleted the email.
