To be honest, when I saw the price, I thought it included a really nice monitor.

16GB RAM and Blu-Ray drive are nice, but those little extras that dell tends to charge way too much for. HD 6450 seems pretty wimpy for a $800 system, too.

for $800 i could build a system that's 3x better.

XPS is just a name that's no longer worth the pennies..

6450 vid card should really tell you all you need to know about this crappy hyped up machine......

smokarz, I've been looking at the Dell promos for awhile and have pretty much given up on finding a decent price on any of these, at least for now. I've never built one myself, and admit to being a bit fearful of it. Can you recommend where someone like me might read up on building their own and what to buy for it? Looks like I will need to learn, as I can't wait around for a decent Dell deal any longer. My old Dell desktop is ready for the grave......

it's really easy to build your own systems these days. it's pretty much, plug n play. do not fear, give it a try.

Youre going to have to replace the PSU and GPU if you want to play games... plus the bios is going to be locked so you wont be able to overclock the CPU either. Build a system yourself its really not that hard

For those that build your own. What would it cost to build something similar to this?

There is a i7 deal FP today if you can get it...would be a good start to build your PC.

I personally have this system...bought it at the outlet for almost half the price minus blu-ray and installed an ati 6870 with stock psu...runs fine. I don't really have time to build one and I just need a decent rig to play the latest games.

Like the PSU, you could probably get better components than those listed for the same price or possibly less if you actually look for good deals. These are just the prices as listed on pricewatch.com, which is what I used when I was into computer gaming

You can't go building an i5/i7 and use a POS Mobo..You .need an Asrock Esxtreme3/Gen3 (No USB 3) min.
You try to find a 30 dollar case.....Good god...put all that nice hardware in a 30 dollar POS box.

IMO...do it right or don't do it...Or scale back on the GPU....Life ain't about games son.

I don't play games so a GPU is not a necessity...but even if you do...get a decent build and realize that time is money and you can't buy time.

The best barebones deal I saw was the Zambezi 4100 a few weeks back for 300.

Forget the Sandy Bridge i5/i7 if you think you are going to slap a 200 processor on a 50 MOBO....

These projects tend to run away in cost......

Some day you'll out grow the games but if you build it right you'll have a computer that'll last 5 yrs.

Couple things:
-That motherboard is overkill if you don't play games. You know how much the crappy mobo's that Dell uses costs? Like $50. I built a 2500K machines with a nice $200 mobo and I can tri-SLI if I want.
-8GB ram can be found for $35 on sale
-SSD isn't necessary, but you can get a 120GB for $120
-Case is expensive. You don't need that either. You can get a NICE case for $50 - http://www.amazon.com/Cooler-Mast...145&sr=8-1

I have that case, and it's great.

If you don't play games, a 2600K is almost overkill in itself. Overlocking isn't necessary if you're not gaming.

Granted it's not an 2600K build, but I got a similar build - 2500K, 1TB hdd, case, tri-SLI

Point being - most people that build a system on the cheap will use stuff from their old PC (Windows 7, SATA HDD) and save money in itself. You can also find great deals and build a killer gaming rig for the same price...and if you don't game, you can build a killer non-gaming rig for like $600.

Better to overbuild than underbuild..Moore's law pushed me to the i7 and the MOBO is the foundation of the system......As per the MOBO....I would have used the ASROCK Exreme 3 Gen 3 but no forward USB 3.0 support which I need.

SSD....once you have one.....its a real time saver. Time is money. Unless one is unemployed.

We are talking about building a computer that is high quality...not a scrimpy setup so I can spend 1/2 my cash on a SLI GPU setup-that's insane.

I would not have got a HAF 912 cuz you get what you pay for and Corsai'rs cable mgmt is far superior to a 912/932. It's one of the highest rated cases out there. that or a Fractal.

Corsair Vengeance 1666 for 35....perhaps...I do pharmaceutical consulting work from my PC so my time is balanced...the time to save 25 bucks on RAM may cost me 125 for the 30 minutes I am looking.

The i7 cost the same as the i5-so I went w/the superior processor.

I run the 212 as the ProGen3 has auto overclocking and I don't trust the POS that came with the Intel.


I may add a GPU in the near future...so better to build up then down.

I could have just bought the 8300, but these HP/Dell/whatever built computers are under PSU-d and use junk parts.

Nothing like the satisfaction of a well built computer with the best of parts.

I'm 49 and don't have time (nor the desire) to play games.

I'd rather earn money, travel and have a well built PC vs. the junk I have purchased custom built from HP/Dell.

But that's just my perogative...To each his own.....

I agree with you that you get what you pay for...but HAF 912 being bad? It's a great case, easily manageable. You don't need a $100+ case if they'll all do the same job. Easy removable slots and bays is a plus, and the HAF series has them as well (not saying it's the only case out there)

I get what you say as well - I love having a nice machine. With my wedding coming up, I was on a budget and was able to build an i5 2500K with 6970, ASROCK 3 mobo, 1TB hdd, 8GB RAM, etc for under $800 - and yes, I had a couple rebates, but they totaled like $60.

For the average SDer, they're looking for a bargain. If you want games, this Dell is a horrible system. You can build your own gaming system for the same price. If you don't want to game, you can build a cheaper machine as well. My last PC was bought from the Dell outlet because I got a great deal - I eventually wanted to get a better graphics card since it was a bit outdated, and I couldn't because of a crappy mobo and power supply - but that's what a cheap Dell gets you.

We're on the same page - my point was that for the average person that doesn't want to game, they can find a much cheaper pre-built PC from Dell's outlet. i7 2600K is overkill in my opinion, as is 8GB of RAM for the person that does just web browsing. I think most people interested in the 8300 are those that want a pre-built machine to game on - which this is not.

Furthermore, a person making 250/hr probably wouldn't spend that much time making a custom built PC, or making narcissistic posts on slickdeals, for that matter. He could get a $2000 PC if he works the day instead of building. And why not spring the extra 50 for another 8GB of RAM - it's only 15 minutes of work, right? ^_^

I would get that $20K PC for sale. It has like 512GB of RAM and an i42-96000 CPU. You would easily make up the cost because you get 250/hr for pharmaceutical consultancy.
