cyup 05-26-2012 11:33 AM

Id rather pay $9+tax for a new laptop and the warranty that comes with it

RockySosua 05-26-2012 12:11 PM

Exceptional deal at $320.

jordanz12 05-26-2012 12:39 PM

Got one for the inlaws. They don't care about HDMI or battery life so this is perfect. Repped op!

KiranS 05-26-2012 01:09 PM

Anybody, is it possible to expand d memory to 6 to 8 gigs on this?

Yes, if you turn all settings to low.

waddupmane 05-26-2012 03:47 PM

Reviews says only 1 slot for ram. Anyone has this that can confirm

mr2cool 05-26-2012 11:43 PM

this laptop is great, decently well built. no thin/loose plastic areas like on my previous dell. only problem is the 4-cell, it only lasts about 2 hrs under usage even with the i3.

they sell a 6-cell battery for this laptop on ebay, but i'm afraid to find out how well they work lol

PublicWifi 05-27-2012 12:32 AM

Not a bad deal at all, especially when compared with the other laptops under $400. However, i3-2350m based laptops with 500gb hd's and HDMI are popping up everywhere for $400.

That is correct. It only has one RAM slot.

The printed info is rather ambiguous, even from the Asus website, but it wouldn't make sense that the mobo could only support 4 gigs of ram and it is confirmed at the following website http://www.it-echo.com/2011/11/24...essor.html. that it does support 8 gigs.

I have the older B960 version of this laptop (X54C) which has exactly the same type of casing. It has a removable panel on the bottom that exposes the hard drive and an expansion memory slot (empty from factory). It came with 4GB which I assume is installed somwhere under keyboard, and I upgraded it to 8GB using the expansion slot. I'd be really surprised if this unit isn't the same. Best bet is to look on the Asus website for the X54L laptop manual/service reference guide.

jessea0956 05-27-2012 08:26 AM

in for one thanks!

DesertCoyote 05-27-2012 05:16 PM

very nice unit for most purposes and quite a bit more powerful than the one I am on now which is still fine for what i am doing......I would agree that if you are not really short on cash, a better "value" is to pay more for unit with a bigger HD, more memory, and HDMI.

waddupmane 05-27-2012 05:59 PM

Same foundation as the $237 Fry's laptop except with much better chip (Celeron B850 on Fry's one and 2GB RAM).

On this series, the included RAM is soldered onto motherboard with 1 slot for upgrade. Has HDMI and gigabit ethernet, but only 2 USB slots (USB 3.0 on left, USB 2.0 on right).

And try out the keyboard before purchasing. Not my favorite for fast typing, but bearable to me. My friend didn't like it at all.

EDIT: Best Buy specs say no HDMI on this model (the cheaper Celeron version from Fry's had it). Can't tell from the picture whether it's there or not.

feldz23 06-09-2012 05:09 AM

Only 4 cell battery also. Not sure how long the battery life is on a 4 cell.

smartdeals 06-09-2012 05:09 AM

hdmi? 6 cell? usb3?

AndrewinMD 06-09-2012 06:15 AM

If this one has the same keyboard as my current Asus (which is a couple years old), it takes awhile to learn to type on it. It requires a firm key press and tends to skip characters if you're a fast typist, which is exceptionally aggravating when entering passwords. Once I learned to modify my typing a bit, it's almost unnoticeable, but it still affects me every once in awhile. Otherwise, the laptop has been fantastic, and I would buy Asus again.

TheThriftyOne 06-09-2012 06:35 AM

nice deal! If i didnt jump on the Asus A6 Amazon deal a few days ago, i definitely would jump on this!
btw this I3 cpu benchmark falls a couple hundred below the A6 3420M - 1997<2298

BigPopov 06-09-2012 06:40 AM

I just bought one of these for my clients. It's a nice laptop. Full size keyboard too.

There's no HDMI. And as someone said, 2 USB, which isn't a big deal for a light user.

Oddly enough, I've also already had to replace the LCD on it. She dropped it the first weekend. lol

It has a Samsung LCD which is pretty nice.

It has a "mesh" like texture to the lid and stuff, which looks nice. It smudges easily and shows damage easily though, so if you move it around alot this laptop will look beat up in no time.

This laptop has the i3 2330M which has a PassMark score of 2721. So the A6 3420M gets beat by the i3 2330M by more than 400 points.

i3 2330M [cpubenchmark.net]

We got a couple of these for the office and have had no issues with the battery. I was concerned about the 4 cells, but I see no difference from other 6 cells that we have had in the past. I don't know if it is more effiencient or better battery cells. We are getting 3-4 hours of battery time.

The only issue I have with the computer is that it comes with two partitions on the hard drive with 120GB on C and 150GB on D as I prefer a single partition.

Or, just reinstall windows after formatting the hard drive and removing the partitions (provided that it really is one hard drive). Its actually not too hard to do as the windows install disk makes it pretty easy before the reinstall.

No need to reinstall. Just delete the d partition and extend the c partition using disc management.

The 2350M is a great CPU. However, for another $70 you can get HDMI / VGA, 3 USB, 500gb HD, etc...

Yes. It'll handle tv and movies fine. You can't do any serious gaming with the integrated graphics, but for multimedia content it's fine.

BigPopov 06-09-2012 10:57 AM

Easeus puts out a free tool that will delete partitions and add them to your C drive that I've used numerous times, it works great and easy to use.

I just went into control panel and searched for "partition". Using the partition tool I deleted the d volume and then removed the partition. Then I extended the c partition which opens a wizard to complete. Just make sure to do it before adding any data to the d drive.

It does a 40/60% split by default. If you do a recovery install, I believe it lets you choose the % you want allocated to each. I like sticking all personal files (documents/pics/videos/etc) on D: so that if Windows ever completely screws up, I can wipe C and either reinstall Windows or load a recovery image from D without having to worry about backing up personal files first.

Got a few questions for some experts before I buy.

1. If I kept it plugged in 24/7 will the battery be okay?

2. Would it handle photoshop, ftp client, Gtalk, email and multiple internet windows at a time and be extremely fast doing them all together?

3. I have a usb hub. I hate using laptop keyboards, if I use the hub and plug in a keyboard, monitor, mouse, (effectively use it as a desktop) would it still be extremely fast or would I notice a slowdown or lag.

Before someone recommends a faster desktop at a better price. I don't want a desktop. I want to use this laptop as a desktop 95% of the time because I am keeping my old tower and have only a small space for it in my office and also if I need to take with me for the weekend I can just unplug the usb hub and go.
