No HDMI

averhoff 06-15-2012 10:19 AM

Got a few questions for some experts before I buy.

1. If I kept it plugged in 24/7 will the battery be okay?

2. Would it handle Photoshop, ftp client, Gtalk, email, Youtube videos, and multiple internet windows at a time and be extremely fast doing them all together?

3. I have a usb hub. I hate using laptop keyboards, if I use the hub and plug in a keyboard, monitor, mouse, (effectively use it as a desktop) would it still be extremely fast or would I notice a slowdown or lag.

Before someone recommends a faster desktop at a better price. I don't want a desktop. I want to use this laptop as a desktop 95% of the time because I am keeping my old tower and have only a small space for it in my office and also if I need to take with me for the weekend I can just unplug the usb hub and go.

Same deal a few weeks ago as bb dotd bought one before and was happy with it very fast

It seems the price keeps going down for this model. Maybe people won't buy it and they have a huge stock.

I have a HTPC so HDMI means jack to me, but the 4 cell battery is the deal breaker for me.

Excellent price otherwise.

neither of these things matter to me, but I was hoping to find an i5 quad-core for $400+/-

but i might have to give this some more thought and possibly jump on it. i wonder if amazon would PM?

Anybody have an opinion on these questions.

1. If I kept it plugged in 24/7 will the battery be okay or will it go bad fast?

2. Would this laptop handle Photoshop, ftp client, Gtalk, email, Youtube videos, and multiple internet windows at a time and be extremely fast doing them all together?

I have an Asus laptop with the same sandy bridge processor/graphics. The processor scores 6.5 and the GPU scores 5.6 for graphics and 6.2 for gaming graphics in Windows 7 but YMMV.

1. You can take the battery out and run from the AC adapter directly. Just don't let the battery run down too far while in storage, or you'll ruin it. As long as you use it a few times a month on battery its fine to just leave it in.

2. Yes, but RAM is going to be a factor when multitasking. 4GB should be enough but it might not hurt to add more if this laptop can take it since DDR3 is pretty cheap.

3. The HD3000 graphics are pretty good for being integrated as shown by the Windows 7 scores above. This has no HDMI so as long as you don't mind using VGA for your monitor this should be fine. I run dual monitors on mine and it has no issues.

The sandy bridge Asus laptops run pretty cool, a lot better than my old super hot HP. Biggest cons of this laptop are the 4 cell battery which won't last as long on a charge, only 2 USB ports and no HDMI. If you can live with that then its a good deal.

Would using a usb hub to connect a keyboard, mouse, and VGA monitor produce a lag of any kind or slow down how fast you could type, enter info, or switch between programs? That would drive me nuts.

Is only two usb ports a really big deal if you can get a usb hub to add more usb connections? They are pretty cheap.

No USB keyboards/mice require very little system resources and use very little USB bandwidth so they will work fine connected on a hub.

4-cell battery kills it once again.
Fairly decent deal for those that don't need to be away from the outlet for too long.
This deal comes around every few weeks. Sigh. I'll get my 6-cell soon enough.

daboss1026 06-16-2012 08:22 PM

Someone please chime in about this one!

I bought one. The battery easily lasts 5 hours of continuous use at a comfortable brightness.

Pretty good laptop. I bought this so I can add an SSD [amazon.com] to the laptop and have better boot times/performance.

daboss1026 06-16-2012 09:22 PM

Damn. No HDMI is a killer for me.

Then get the $330 Asus with sandy bridge Pentium. Processor is a littler slower than the i3, but it has HDMI. My wife has a laptop with the same processor and it's fast.

Good
- 1 x USB 3.0 is good
- built-in facial recognition is nice too
- energy star

Bad
- webcam is only 0.3MP, it might as well be non-existent (wonder how well the facial recognition will work with a 0.3MP camera, probably either thinks everyone looks like you or you are not you most of the time )
- there are only 2 usb ports total
- hard drive is 5200rpm
