This post can and should be edited by users like you :)

Please note that Civilization 5 includes the Mac AND PC version, regardless of what Amazon says. The game requires activation on Steam and Steam will give you access to both versions of the game when you activate/purchase one. That was the whole point of the Steam Play system they introduced a while back!

This applies to the Steam version of Civilization IV as well, which is found here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/...B00475AYUA

Darn, on the PC version is on sale. :(

Good find anyway. repped.

Civ 5 is a great game. I love the tweaks to the game that differentiate it from previous iterations.

Nice deal.

Ashvins 08-24-2012 04:56 AM

Um, 12 TUs and 2 posts and it's already FP? Great game, btw. If I didn't already have it, I'd be in.

I haven't played civ since civ 2. Any thoughts between civ 4 complete and civ 5?

theredfro 08-24-2012 05:43 AM

Note that you can purchase the Amazon "DRM Free" version OR just the Steam key from Amazon. Look for the little blurb about DRM (next to the big warning triangle) and click the link to switch between versions. They both cost the same. I'm sure people have opinions about which one is better.

I picked up Civ IV complete for Steam and it activated with no problems. I've been meaning to pick this up for awhile now...

The two biggest differences for me were that you can no longer stack multiple military units per tile and that you must research all techs to reach the end of the tech tree. In Civ 4, you could skip some techs entirely if you chose to do, but Civ 5's prereq structure for researching new techs requires you to master all of them eventually, though you can temporarily delay researching some techs to rush others.

There are other major changes under the hood. Religion was removed in vanilla and readded in Gods and Kings with significant changes. Espionage also got the axe and was reintroduced in G&K, again with significant changes. You should read a full review to see what those changes are. Those game systems are completely different.

Lastly, the AI has been changed. Now, playing on high difficulties will mean almost constant war. With everyone. Many of the negative reviews I've seen from people who have been playing Civ 5 for a long time complain that it's pretty much impossible to win Deity or Immortal difficulty with any victory condition other than Domination. This is just what I've read. I haven't played the game enough to even attempt it on those difficulties.

Overall, many people enjoy Civ 5, and there are still lots of folks who played Civ 4 and prefer it (with expansions). Personally, I prefer Civ 4 for a strategy-oriented game, but Civ 5's simplification of game systems and more casual feel make it more accessible. I find myself playing Civ 5 more overall.

Came here just to say this.

I already own it on Impulse, but would like to get Civ IV on Steam so I can ignore it on two services instead of one. :)

Should probably mention somewhere that the sale only includes PC, not Mac.

Sid Meier's Civilization® V
All 4 Cradle of Civilization Map Packs (Mediterranean, Asia, Americas, Mesopotamia)
Civilization Pack: Babylon (Nebuchadnezzar II)

Explorer’s Map Pack
Official Digital Soundtrack

I haven't played this since 2 or 3. The last thing I remember is an archer defeating my tank so I uninstalled it. Is that kind of crap still possible? I always hear great things about the game but that one thing really soured my experience.

Not true. Both Civ V and Civ IV activate on Steam (just be sure to click to the Steam-enabled SKU [amzn.to] for the Steam code). And those subs on Steam work for Mac.

I checked Bronasium [thebronasium.com] before I bought and can confirm with my own Steam account on my Mac that I have access to them.

akarol 08-24-2012 06:30 AM

So I just order it normally from Amazon and then I choose "Just Need Keys" and use that key for Steam? That's it? BTW, I'm interested in the GOTY edition and I don't see the big triangle you're all talking about.

the expansion for civ5 i understand closed the gap a lot, but IV is still better.

I'm waiting for a "gold" or "complete" or whatever on civ5, to get the expansion with it & try agian. I haven't played it since it first came out, on a friends machine while they were out of town, and ... blech. He doesn't play it anymore either, though he still plays IV and Revolutions a lot. That says something IMO.

ADDED: though now I see even the reviews after "goads and kings" are mixed. To be fair, Civ IV really needed a second expansion, BTS, to really come into its own as an all-time-great game, before that there were a lot of struggles with AI, balance between alternate victory paths etc (and of courwse there still are some). So ... maybe I will be waiting for a SECOND expansion to V?!?

It was probably an EWOK unit. Are you sure it wasn't that? I hear they can be very pesky to mechanized units.

If you mean GOTY for Civ V, then there is only one SKU it will activate on Steam so don't worry. Just get the keys and paste them in.

If you mean Civ IV, just use the Steam key SKU [amzn.to] and you'll be set. If you want a DRM-free download, then you can use the one in the OP.

I'm sure the "super ultimate" edition will be available in under 6 months with all the DLC + G&K. I am a fool and paid full price for both.

I wouldn't count on another expansion pack, Civ 5 has been panned so badly they are likely looking to sweep it under the rug and already working on 6.

Oh, and I bought this game 2 years ago and just got a 660 TI and I still can't play this thing at max graphic details. You need a supercomputer. Hopefully they code the next one better.

I haven't tried the Civ V expansions yet, but Civ V base game performs fine for me using just a Radeon 6870 and a Phenom II 965 BE. I don't remember if I maxed out the graphics or not, but I usually go as high as I feasibly can.

Well, then I wait and extra 3-5 years then for civ6 to come out & bugs ironed out. Probably better for my health and career anyway -- no more spacing out in meetings because I stayed up til 3am to play just one more turn -- I came "this close" to self-admitting myself to CivAnon [youtube.com] after BTS came out :)

Korea and Wonders of the Ancient World? Even if they are small, I guess its worth the combo pack for $1.87.

I got the Civ V: GOTY edition and got the key. Hoping that will activate on Steam. Can't try it at work as they have Steam blocked off. =/

Aleman 08-24-2012 07:26 AM

Do not buy these games. You will be sitting there at 4 AM after an 8 hour game thinking "just one more turn," left wondering how you're going to function at work on three hours of sleep, and promising yourself never to play the game again.

j/k

I like both games, people blinded by nostalgia will say IV is better but as a newcomer to the series who started with IV, I like V much better (especially with the expansion), mostly because it's streamlined and units don't stack on tiles.

I used to use LogMeIn [logmein.com] to activate games on Steam. Now, I find it easier and faster to use Chrome Remote Desktop [google.com].

Now that you can start downloads from the Steam website, I'd be surprised if the site didn't soon let you activate games there, as well.

I think "Korea" and "Wonders of the Ancient World" are the ones what are missing from GOTY. I am waiting for G&K to hit $10 from a site that isnt Russian :lmao:

I think its possible to win besides through domination on the hardest difficulty...

Theoretically I am on my way to it now. I started a Huge Map, free for all, deity difficulty, quick pace, no barbarians on the Earth map using Alexander. I spawned on North Africa, and I currently only have 5 cities. I am in the modern era. I befriended every city state around me, and as many of the cultural ones around the world that I have found. Everyone who declares war on me faces an impregnable field of city states. 3 teams and I are engaged in a space race. 4 others have nukes. I dont have uranium, so I am counting on other teams to take the nukes before me  I already have 5 cultural routes finished. I chose liberty first, then patronage, and filled everything else slowly. Built as many wonders as possible in Sparta and Athens.

I cant tell if I will win or not because the game is so slow now that i have to wait 3-4 minutes per turn. I will update if I actually win :bounce:

I was able to get it to work on Mac with the "PC key" from Amazon with the GOTY edition. You need to have a Steam account to do so but once you order the game, go to your account and copy the key for the game. Then open Steam on your Mac and go under "Games" -> "Activate a Product on Steam...", hit next and agree to stuff, then copy the key, then it should activate, then download the game. I was able to get it to run and all of the DLC content is in the game (Civ IV had DLC separate on Steam for me so I thought I would put it out there).

I bought the $8 G&K and I was glad to see they added religion and espionage back in (hence the reason I bought it). I haven't gotten much time into it, but the religion does not seem to be near as complex (or maybe I should say customizable) as Civ IV. I haven't gotten to the point of trying espionage yet, but did enjoy it in Civ IV. I do think the G&K expansion gets Civ V closer to where it should have been when it was released, there probably wouldn't have been as many complaints. Aside from all the other crap, like no official mutliplayer saves for months after release, I still feel V is a bit dummed down but there are some additions I like and the AI is screwy when you play on harder settings.

This is my biggest complaint with the game. If you play multiplayer along with AI, turns take longer and longer to the point of being ridiculously long towards the end of the game. Admittedly it has been some time since I played IV, but I don't remember turns taking as long. I know it isn't do to computer specs either as both my friend and I have decent systems.

I haven't played a ton (by which I mean only a few games, though those probably add up to 50 hours ) of civ 5, but for the most part combat seems to be much improved over civ4. More powerful units will often one shot weaker units as they should. But to answer your question, I never see archers take out tanks unless the tanks have next to no health left.

Just did research on this and since Civ 5 is a "Steamplay" game, activation of the game on Steam(which is required) will give you access to both the Mac and PC versions.

The random number generator can screw you sometimes in civ4 but the above scenario never happens. Only if the tank is at like 1 health vs full health archer would the archer win. But, there's no reason for an archer to coexist in the same era as a tank unless you got lazy and forgot to upgrade your unit.

bigpimpatl 08-24-2012 10:32 AM

Anyone who has bought civ4 should download the BUG mod (BTS unaltered gameplay). It doesn't change the mechanics of gameplay; rather, it adds a layer of information that is so useful for a new player and even veteran players. You can get information on one screen instead of having to click through the different advisors.

stephen4005 08-24-2012 11:45 AM

Thanks, in for GOTY

butalearner 08-24-2012 12:03 PM

I've never played V, but the last time IV and V were on sale I grabbed IV. The system requirements are much lower, so I can play it on very respectable settings on my laptop with integrated graphics. Plus, back then (this was just before Christmas) I read that the mods are much better for IV.

I've had plenty to keep me busy with the main game, but I've also tinkered with the Fall From Heaven II dark fantasy mod. I've heard great things about the second most popular mod, Rhye's and Fall of Civilization, a version of which is actually included with Beyond the Sword expansion.

It happens all the time because the AI never upgrades units, and never gets rid of old ones either. So while they may have newer units, the old ones are sitting around, somewhere. The AI cheats so badly it isn't even funny, they grow and expand so fast but never seem to have to worry about balancing their budget.

yakapo 08-24-2012 01:16 PM

I bought civ5 right when it was released for full price. I don't think I played it much. I recently started playing again and it doesn't seem quite as fun as the civ's from years ago. Is it just me or does the game seem to move at a much slower pace? Also why does population make everyone so unhappy? Are there any mods to fix these issues? Or do the expansions help?

I wanted to purchase additional games as gifts using the steam option (giving the product key physically, in a card or something.) Is that against the rules? I do see it says that gifting is not available, though I assume that's just an option that amazon sometimes offers. Any info is appreciated!

are any of Civ V DLC's worth picking up besides G&K? I have the vanilla version already, just wondering if the others add anything significant. thanks

Repped because this is a great deal and I would get it if I wasn't a d3 addict.

this game will consume your lifeeeeeeeeee

But thanks because I was able to pick up the DLC Korea and wonders of the ancient world combo pack for less than $2 instead of the $8 on steam.

I only have ever owned and played 4 with the one expansion and liked it a lot. Which do you think is the better value, V for 7.5 or the GOTY edition of 5 for 5 bucks more?

I want to get one of them but I'm not sure which game to get.
