New Format

From now on please post corrections here. Just copy and paste the old info and then below it, make the proposed corrections. This is much easier for me to update the initial post. Plus, the wiki links were taking you to the first post anyway, which seemed moot. Thank you. --McSlick

The vbulletin link (http://forums.slickdeals.net/faq.php?faq=vb_faq) in the FAQ's section no longer works. I'm pretty sure it should now be this: http://slickdeals.net/forums/faq...._board_faq

Awesome job - lots of work - 2 reps to you!

Don't be scared to ask questions here. The disclaimer in the title "Please read before creating a thread or posting a question!" is there so people will read before they post an obvious question, like "how do I rep?". But if you tried reading this thread (I know it's long but it is sorted by keyword) and you don't see the question, then post it. In this instance, I would look under the keyword Reputation Points <--- (click to go to all the rep questions) and if it is not there, I would post the question. FYI it's not here, so great question! :woot:

The good news is they are not lost!!! :highfive:

There are two ways to do this:

  • First and most easiest-- PM a moderator from this list and ask them. Arjunsr even volunteered :D

  • Second and not as good-- If you want to see all your reps from a certain post, go to that post and click on your own rep box as seen in this screen shot [photobucket.com]. The downsides to this second option is that you don't know who repped you and when you were repped. Also, this method is post specific, so you have to know the post(s) you were repped in. Not exactly easy when you have been here for over a year.

Thanks for the feedback and I will update the first post :)

One of the common questions here is "Why don't we have a section on ......(finance, stock market, movies, travel, CD & mortgage rates, etc.)." Could the reasoning behind adding/not adding new sections be addressed in this FAQ?

Excellent suggestion. I actually had this question answered in a rough draft I created, but wanted to get the admin's take on it and how exactly he wants it worded. But this is a great reminder and I will update it once I have a response. Thanks Xnarg!

Do you mean...how do you start a new thread?

If that's what you want to do, go to the right forum and you'll see a button to the left and right above the first thread that says "New Thread" Click on that and add your info.

Since you made a post just now I have to believe you meant thread. Sorry if that didn't help.

can I suggest people try to have the name of the store included on the title....

*JeanGrey* 11-09-2007 01:10 PM

So I have a question.

How do I go back and see all of my posts from the very beginning?

I tried doing a search, but just like clicking on "authored posts" in my profile it only gives me the last 500 posts.

I really wanna just go look back at my first posts so I can :coverlaf: at myself.

:D

TStorms 11-15-2007 01:54 PM

Great compilation. I do have a question, though.

The site mentions that trades should be for items that are valued at $5 or less.
If something is "listed" as retail value of $20, but the items are only selling for $1-$3 on ebay, is that something that can be traded?

I don't want to violate the rules, but I have some items that clearly aren't worth their retail value as I'm having trouble selling them on ebay for a few bucks.

Thanks in advance.

random. 11-15-2007 02:04 PM

I think that would be fine. As long as you are okay with taking a loss for the items if something goes wrong- do it.

Look at one of your own posts. Click on your username above your avatar. Cick 'view public profile'. There are 2 tabs that show all reps given and recieved.

When you are in the forum that you want to create your thread in, there should be a button for "New Thread" at the top of the forum thread list, on the left. Click that, create your post and submit :).

rdilliker 03-23-2008 06:30 AM

Maybe I'm missing something but when I do an "advanced forum search" and choose to sort the results by last posting date, the results are not sorted by time, just date. I guess that is "correct" since the results are still sorted by last posting "date", but when I've used this feature on other forums it also orders the results within a particular date based on time of last posting.

A Few More Questions

Great job supplying the new people like me with a few FAQ's on how to this site is operated. I have a few more questions after quickly reading over them. Why can I not view anyone's public profile? and Is there really a certain number of reps I need to give reps? What if eveyday becomes a national "Don't Rep ChaoticPeace Day", would I never be able to give reps?

But yeah, for the most post the FAQ's were very informative. If I could give you reps I would, but i guesss I'll just have to owe you one. Thanks

After you make 50 posts, you can rep others.

lupus 04-10-2008 10:06 AM

How many posts do you have to make before you can view profiles or PM members?

chilliepepper 05-25-2008 12:35 PM

How many posts do you need to be able to enable private messages? (I tried searching this thread and didn't find it...sorry if I missed it)

dagrin 05-27-2008 01:06 PM

Quick question... I think I understand everything except what the bar underneath your name means. I know that by mods its different and sometimes says L, L2, L3 ...by regular people. Also, I see that some people customize it etc. Is it indicative of how long you have been on the site or how many reps or how many posts? Please explain!

BTW great thread...very helpful

There's not really a pre-determined number, at least that the mods will actually state (protection against those that sign up just to try to spam the forums or members :)). So just post naturally, contribute if, when or how you can (even if just a post to help someone, give thanks, add info to someone else's deal, etc) and it will come fairly quickly :)

The bar is an indicator of how many posts you have. The blue in the bar increases the more you post. And once the blue reaches the end of/fills up the first bar (which takes a lot posts!), a new one starts beneath it, this time with green.

Someone please explain the term "smash and grab". This one is new to me.

thanks

Quote:

thanks

Smash and grab is when somebody abuses a coupon (i.e. the CVS $5 off any energizer battery coupon from last year) by making lots of transactions in a store (to get around the fact you can't use two in 1 transaction), causing the item that coupon is for to go OOS and generally do nothing but annoy other customers and employees.

This then leads to stores tightening up coupon policy and imposing stricter limits which causes everyone to lose.

Other example of smash and grab:

Holding up the line to make more than 1 transaction because you can't use the same coupon twice in 1 transaction, instead of going to the end of the line at the end of the transaction.

Showing up at CVS with multiple cards in the name of fake people and/or animals on Sunday Morning at 7:00 AM and clearing the entire store of ECB items.

Bragging you used an expired coupon lots of times at the same store (or even different stores).

Demanding a coupon that beeps to be pushed through at stores that are "if it scans, we accept" -- this usually causes these stores to start reading coupons instead of just scanning.

dagrin 06-26-2008 10:38 AM

If somebody reps me while they still have less than 50 posts it doesn't count. When they get 50 posts, does it get counted?

Topic post question

Is there a certain amount of posts or time that has to pass before you can submit a topic? I tried and was told it would have to get moderator approval first. Is that on all topic posts or just for newbies with under a certain post count/time frame?

Thanks a lot! :look:

That's just for newbies. The mods won't say exactly how long they moderate new users threads (so the spammers won't learn the secret ;)), but it usually isn't for very long. And the mods usually get those threads approved and posted fairly quickly, too. Just keep participating normally and pretty soon you'll be off the 'newbie moderating' list :).

Shopper77 11-13-2008 08:02 PM

Thank you for the fast response!

One more question:
How long before I can add my own avatar under my name instead of the options from SD? and I would like to also have a cool saying above the avatar, any help?

:) Thanks!

widgit 11-16-2008 02:30 AM

My pleasure and welcome to SD :)

It shouldn't be very long before you can do both of those. The custom avatar may even already be available to you by now. Even though you only joined a couple of days ago, you have several posts, which is usually part of the requirements to get some of the 'extras'. Check your User CP > Edit Avatar and scroll down past the standard SD ones. That's where the option to upload a custom avatar should show up. Remember the size limits though: 66x66 and, I think, 19 or 20kb

As for the customer user title, that's under the 'Edit Profile' option in your User CP. If I recall I had less than a month's wait (maybe only a week or two?) before I could change mine. But that was a couple of years ago (yikes!) so I may be a bit off.

Here is the entire list. Or you can link a miley by selecting insert image from the posting menu. It's the yellow icon with the mountain and moon.

Much better Vbulletin upgrade. The home page looks a lot better.)

JSRANCHMN 04-11-2009 09:31 AM

A.)Why can't I figure out multiple quoting?
I click the multiple quote button on post and then another and then go to the open field. I try pasting after I select the multiple quote. Is it possible that I am one of the only people who doesn't get it?

B.)Why can't I find any information on multiple quoting?

Why isn't there a prominent location for advanced posting with a listing below like:

Advanced Posting:

Adding and naming a hyperlink
Multiple quoting
Starting a Thread
Enhancing your post when posting a deal (Suggestions)
i.e.
1.) Put multiple links when posting a deal with original prices and sale prices
2.) Add a product review from a reputable source when posting a deal
3.) Include a link for the rebate

I have to tell you, I am getting frustrated and feel confined. I have been around for awhile and did not want to post a deal because I didnt know how to insert a link and name it instead of along string of characters. I need encouragement man! What I requested above would be considered encouraging.

I just feel like answers are buried too deep in the website.

B.)Why can't I find any information on multiple quoting?

To multiquote, click on the http://i.slickdeals.net/images/butto...iquote_off.gif multi-quote button on each post that you want to quote, except the last post. On the last post that you're quoting, click on the regularhttp://i.slickdeals.net/images/buttons/reply.gif 'reply' button instead. When the reply box comes up, all of the quotes *should* be there, including that of the final post.

Enhancing your post when posting a deal (Suggestions)
i.e.
1.) Put multiple links when posting a deal with original prices and sale prices
2.) Add a product review from a reputable source when posting a deal
3.) Include a link for the rebate
That type of info and suggestions are in almost all of the FAQs for each forum, which are stickied at the top of each forum. Unfortunately not everyone reads them.

I have to tell you, I am getting frustrated and feel confined. I have been around for awhile and did not want to post a deal because I didn’t know how to insert a link and name it instead of along string of characters. I need encouragement man! What I requested above would be considered encouraging.

I just feel like answers are buried too deep in the website.
 It's true, a lot of the information on how and what to do is spread around throughout the forums. That's why McSlick put this FAQ megathread together, to try to bring as much of the information together in one place as possible.

Thank you so much for your enlightening response. All of it was very helpful. I did see hyperlinking in the thread and you have pointd me in the right direction and now I know where to go. I was proposing consildation of 'like' information all falling under one topic ~ all you need to know about posting in a prominant location.

I hear ya. I have been thinking of ways to re order this thread so maybe this will motivate me-- I have been slacking :O You can always go to the first post and search the page using your internet brower (ctrl + F in IE & FF) just type in what word you are looking for.

So now you know how to multi-quote, hyperlink, and where to find other answers to your questions, so hopefully you got the encouragement to post some slickdeals cuz we need ya! :grouphug:

Thank you very much. You know I was actually just trying to help with a suggestion of what I thought might be benefical to the Slickdeal's community. I feel validated with your response and definately more empowered. I have seen how developed some people are when they post a deal by putting several links in the initial post, including product reviews and links to rebates and that is inspiring. When I tried to post something I didn't even know how to put a link in with a name and I felt a bit lame putting a a long string of characters in so now I feel more Slickdeals savvy.

You should probably PM a moderator for the answer to that question. Here's the list of mods.

Thread Subscriptions

Thread Subscriptions offer a means to track certain threads that are of particular interest to you.
Even if you are unable to visit the site for days at a time, you may quickly find a “Subscribed” thread much easier than searching through pages and pages of newer topics in the main forums.

You can Subscribe to a thread as follows:
* While viewing a given thread, click on the “Thread Tools” control near the upper right corner of the thread, then click on “Subscribe to this Thread” in the drop-down menu that appears. screen shot

When you wish to view or search your Subscribed Threads, use either of the two methods:
* Click on the “Quick Links” control toward the right end of the black colored Control Bar at the very top of all forum pages. From the drop-down menu, click on “Subscribed Threads” and a list of all Subscribed Threads will be presented;

* Click on the User Control Panel link at the far left end of the black colored Control Bar at the very top of all forum pages. To view all Subscribed Threads, click on the List Subscriptions link midway down the left side Menu Bar.

To Delete Subscribed Threads or Move them to other folders, select the threads to be deleted or moved by adding a check mark to the box at the far right of each thread, then click the drop-down control at the bottom right of the list and select “Move to folder” or “Delete Subscription” from the list and click “Go”.

I believe that it's actually a matter of not only how many posts you have, but also the fact that you're a brand new user as of today :). It'll probably take a couple of days or so before you can vote. That's one of the temporary restrictions that new users have, to deter those that may just sign up to spam, self-promote, etc. So just keep posting and participating normally and most likely you'll be able to use the voting system fairly soon :)

(:secret: The mods won't give out exact timing on how or when restrictions on new users are lifted :))

Most of these limits are in place to deter would-be spammers but usually dont last too long. So be patient, participate in the forums as you normally would, and soon youll have access to just about everything

the exact number is not given out. As the New Users section of this FAQ indicates just participate more-- it will happen sooner than later :)

Hello, I've searched, and I can't seem to find an answer to my question. Are your smilies and graphics somehow stored on a different server? I see the site fine, but for some reason I don't see any icons or smilies when I'm at work. The only thing I can think of they must be blocked by websense, but if I can come here, why would only part of the page be blocked?

DNC 09-17-2009 02:56 PM

Maybe i.slickdeals.net is blocked.

Coachie 09-17-2009 03:00 PM

Thanks DNC, looks like you're right. Now why in the heck would they do that to me? You have any idea how hard it is to read lounge forums without seeing smilies? GRRRRR. Half the posts look blank... lol

Maybe your comapny's servers or websense don't recognize i.slickdeals.net as legit, or they're just being strict because that's where the images live and they're blocking images. :dontknow: Can you ask your company to allow or whitelist i.slickdeals.net? (if they don't mind you surfing while at work ;))

If that doesn't work, possibly post this question as a new thread here in Site Issues and see if any of the SD admins have a solution? (not sure how often the admins look at this particular thread, so not sure if they'd see your post or not otherwise.)

I believe it's like any other forum. Default is newest post/reply (not necessarily thread) first. Unless you have the thread sorting options set differently in your UserCP.

Hi un07627,

OP means original poster. That tag is there so when you are viewing a thread past the first post and the OP (Original Poster) replies, you can easily see it is from them.

For example, there should be an OP next to my name in this thread because I am the OP (creator of the thread)

There are tags for OP (Original Poster in blue) SD (SlickDeals staff in red) & B (Friends/ Buddies in green) Buddies are people in your buddy list

You can read more about it in this thread

The answer to your original question ("what does OP mean?") was located in the first post of this thread under

Quote:

Abbreviations

if you click the link and go to the letter O, it will be there. But I have not added the stamps yet, so I can see how it could be confusing. Thank you for pointing it out-- I will add it soon.

Best,

McSlick

New User Guide

Greetings and salutations!

If you are reading this you are most likely new to SlickDeals.net (also know as "SD"). This thread is to help smooth your transition into a new and exciting world of saving money. Let me be the first to welcome you! :welcome:

Your curiosities and inquiries are most likely answered here. If not, feel free to post in this thread and your question(s) will be answered shortly.

Additionally, any feedback is always welcomed. Thanks for reading!

Quote:

I only have 1 Private Message [PM]. What gives?!?
PMs are limited to one during your initiation period into SD. This includes PMs you send and receive. Delete the PM you have sent/received to send or receive another one. Repeat until you are a regular member.

Quote:

Why are PMs limited to 1?
The reason why is simple. SD gets spammed crazy! It happens when you are a major website. New user spammers come here to post their websites and links to evilly lure you into "deals" that are not really deals. You probably do not notice it because the staff of this site does such an excellent job of insuring each members safety and security but it happens on a daily basis. Furthermore, this limitation is to protect members from malicious & unwanted messages, posts, and other such communications.

Quote:

When will I be able to have full privileges?
The exact formula will never be given out. NEVER. The reason for this is so spammers don't know the "magic" equation, fulfill it, and then spam you. All I can say is that you need to participate more. It will happen before you know it. :)

Quote:

What other privileges are suspended during my initiation?
Besides PMing, New Users cannot rate threads, give reputation points [reps], have a signature, or send website URLs and email addresses in a PM.

Quote:

What else should I know?
Your posts and threads are moderated (i.e. moderators approve your post(s)/thread(s) before they are displayed).

Quote:

How long before my post/thread shows up?
This varies. Could be anywhere from a couple minutes to a couple hours. Please be patient. :)

Quote:

How do I know when I have passed initiation?
Your user title will turn from "New User" to "L1: Learner".

Quote:

I posted in a thread but my post count didn't go up. What gives?
Any thread marked "chat" will not count towards your post count.

Quote:

I just repped someone and their reputation number didn't increase. What gives?
Read the breakdown of reputation points here. Thanks buddy72192.

Quote:

What are some of the forum features?
Click here for a screen shot. There is also a FAQ section for the front page features as well.

Quote:

How can I view my posts or threads?
You can click "Quick Links" and then click on the link in your profile page.

Quote:

How do I get my urls from www.slickdeals.net to this?

Subscription limit?

I have a quick question -- as I've been using SlickDeals.net more often than ever, the number of my subscribed threads is growing rapidly every day. I wonder if there's a limit on the max. number of subscriptions allowed per member so I should start subscribing sparingly. If so, then is there a table that lists up the limit of each respective membership level, for example? Or is it more like a certain limit per subscription folder? Thanks and I appreciate this great user guide that you put together! :)

DNC 02-14-2010 08:25 PM

I currently have over 2,000 thread subscriptions. My guess is if there is a limit, it' be 32,767 or 65,535, but could be higher than that.

edit:
Unless things have changed, subscriptionid was created as an unsigned smallint, which would give a maximum of 65535.

I don't recall this happening in the past, but it's gotten me nervous. I looked at an older post where I thanked an OP for posting, and it was upside-down. I'm a bit concerned that this is a virus? Or am I just being dumb? If it is intentional, I'm not sure I see the point.

Hi Starry9 :) To have your thread moved to a different forum, just click on the Mod Alert button that's at the bottom of your post and in the box that appears, ask a mod to move it for you. They're usually pretty quick at doing so :)

I only want the most up to date printable + code of various store in my area.
Once threads expired seem I should be able to replaced with new automatically.

I'm not sure that I understand what you're asking. If you're talking about threads that you've either subscribed to or stickied to the top of a forum, then you can just either unsubscribe or unsticky that thread once it's no longer needed. Then just sticky or subscribe to the new one.

As for the ignore button, it's for ignoring threads, so it can be used to ignore threads you no longer wish to see. But be aware that there's a limit on how many threads you can ignore. How many each user can ignore is based on time and posts, up to a maximum of 400. You can see how many you can ignore by going in to your UserCP and then clicking on the Ignored Threads option on the left-hand side.

DNC 06-07-2010 11:46 PM

There's a restriction for signatures for new users.

Hi MacFreak,

Welcome to SlickDeals!

If you read this thread, it is posted twice-- once in the Signature section "Members with the the user title of New User cannot have a signature. Just participate more :)" and in the New User Guide "New Users cannot rate threads, give reputation points [reps], have a signature, or send website URLs and email addresses in a PM."

Reading the New User Guide should answer most of your questions.

Please let us know if you have anymore questions.

Is there any thread to sell dell gift certificates for SDers instead of going through Ebay hassle. Got a $200 dell gift certificate code. I was thinking of getting a laptop myself from dell.com. But recently got a hp refurb laptop from cowboom for $300.

cgrady 06-22-2010 09:34 PM

No, selling coupons/certificates is not allowed on the site :)

jhstew1 08-03-2010 12:07 PM

BB code is On
Smilies are On
[IMG] code is On
HTML code is Off

Why is HTML Off ?

TIA !!

cgrady 08-03-2010 01:22 PM

Because you can do anything you should need to with bbcode, and html opens the door for security issues :)

Yes, a profile picture is separate from the avatar. To add an avatar go to your UserCP and on the left side (a little below the edit profile picture link that you used before), you'll the Settings & Options area. Click the Edit Avatar link. Upload your avatar (max size: 75 x 75 pixels or 19.5 kb, whichever is smaller), save changes and done. :)

As a new user, though, just be aware that you may not yet have enough time or posts yet in order to be allowed your own custom avatar. But if not, don't worry, just post and participate normally and it'll happen very soon

And welcome to SD! :)

Hi ljviss :)

when you are in "post a reply":
  • click "manage attachments"
  • a box will pop up
  • add the link for the image to "Upload File from a URL"
  • add &=.jpeg to the end of it
  • click "upload"
  • click on the location in the post that you want to pic to be
  • click on the staple icon at the top of the post (next to the smilie face)
  • it will show the available image
  • click on it
  • it will then go into the post
  • submit the post

ljviss 08-22-2010 02:58 PM

is it possible that embedded images are not allowed in the hot deals forums?

When you tried this in the HD forum did it show as a smaller icon of the image which then must be clicked on to see the full size image?

Because that is what I am getting. see below

Hi kallistak and welcome to SD :)

The mods generally won't say exactly how many posts are needed for new users to gain specific privileges, such as being able to PM someone. This is to deter would-be spammers from just joining, posting the required number of posts and then spamming the heck out of the users. But it usually isn't very long, so just post and participate as you normally would and soon you'll start being able to do so.

As an FYI, when you do gain the privilege to use private messaging, at first you'll probably only be allowed one or two PMs.(again to deter would-be spammers) So keep your PM box, both inbox and sent, clear or it will get full very fast. Once you've been here longer and/or posted more then you'll start to be allowed more PMs. :)

I don't see a way to edit the wiki thing (probably because I'm new), so I'm going to guess that by "here," the wiki means this thread, and not the wiki.

As such, I would like to point out a couple of typos I found on my way to the new user guide (was looking for it because the new user message at the top was pretty vague about PM rights, but the guide cleared that up for me).

The header for Count Down Clock (Countdown Clock? The link at the top of the post writes it that way though) says Clock Down Clock.

Additionally, the link to "vBulletin FAQ" a few lines down from there doesn't seem to lead anywhere.

P.S. here are a couple of acronym things I found that don't seem to be on the abbreviations list and I don't know what they mean: SRC, RBM

You may either update the wiki or post in this thread, it's your preference :)

I corrected these two items. Thank you for pointing them out.

I did not make that list nor can I make changes/updates to it.

SRC - Secret Reward Card (this is a Victoria Secret card)
RBM - Redeemed By Me (usually if someone posts a one time code or coupon)
RNBM - Redeem Not By Me (invented by DNC)

Please let me know if you have anymore questions.

Not in that post/comment. You could find another of their posts and rep with a message about their wiki info.

For an issue with another user, you'd PM a moderator and tell them what you believe the issue/problem to be. Then the mod(s) can take care of whatever the problem is, if necessary.

QUESTION:

still kinda new myself, so just wondering.

i know its against rules on SD to post referral or affiliate links.
if i see a contest or post that may possibly have a referral link in it, should i click "mod alert"?
i dont want to be wrong and get in trouble from the mods myself, but i think the chances of the post have the affiliate link is high since i saw the offer on my affiliate page.

If you think it may have a referral link in it, then yes, mod alert it. Give the mods what details you know or suspect and they'll look in to it. You won't get in trouble for MA'ing it, that's what mod alerts are for. :)

By 'failed' do you mean that you're getting some kind of error message, or just that the mods are saying no to the name you want?

I don't recall seeing any rules or specifications about usernames (at least not in the site's FAQ, and it's been too long since I registered to remember if it stated any rules then). Is it possible that the username(s) that you've requested are already in use? To find out if the name you want is available, you might try searching for that username first. Do so under the Advanced Search, and then put the username you want in to the 'find posts by user' field. If nothing comes up when you type or search for that name, then it should be available.

If the name does not come up when you search, but you're still unable to change to that username, then maybe PM one of the mods to find out why you can't change your name.

I see you have already added a profile pic and yes, you're right, the profile pic does not show up in posts. The only way that a profile pic may be seen is if someone clicks on your "user profile".

How old is the post you are trying to rep? Posts are only repable for 30 days...although the error message that you got is not the typical one that should be there in the instance of an old post.

Click the Mod Alert button in the first post and ask that it be deleted in the comment field.

I tried to create my first post today, but it hasn't been pushed through. I've been a slickdeals "viewer" for a number of years, and was excited about my first post. It seemed like it went through intially, but I made a change to a typo, submitted, and then I haven't been able to see or edit my post ever since.

I also didn't see anything here in the FAQ section that provides anything related to my question. Anyways, any help from a mod would be great.

We don't allow self promotion. If you have any further question you can PM me.

And since you're new, just in case you don't know how to PM (private message) someone, just click on Schooby's name and you'll see a dropdown list with a link to PM her.

And also since you're new (btw, welcome to SD :)) be aware that new users are limited a bit at first, including how many PM's you can send or receive. Right now you most likely only get 1 private message, and that includes both your sent and received PM's. So if you do PM Schooby, you'll need to delete that one from your sent folder, if it automatically saved there, or your PM box will be full. You can choose to download/save that PM to your computer before deleting it if you wish, by placing a checkmark in the box to the far right of the message on the message list page, then choose 'save as...' from the dropdown at the top of the page, then click on 'go'.

The "How does one become a Mod?" link seems to be dead. At least for me.

I don't think it's you, 'cause it's doing it for me also. I think it's part of the URL rewriting that the admins are implementing right now. I went ahead and posted about this problem in that thread, so hopefully they'll look in to it. :)

My guess would be it's either a glitch, or because you're fairly new. But I'm not sure. Try going in to your Deal Alerts page and selecting one or all of your alerts, then 'renew' them. Does that give you the extra time, beyond 30 days (or beyond an extra 30 days)?

(To renew an alert from within the alert itself, just select the Edit button and then without changing anything, click on the Done button. To renew several alerts at once, put a checkmark in the box to the far right of the alert(s) you want to renew, then scroll alllll the way down to the bottom of the alerts list, select Renew from the dropdown and then click on Go.)

If renewing the alert does not extend it correctly, and if you don't get an answer from one of the mods or admins within a couple of days, then I'd suggest posing this question as its own thread in the Site Issues forum, so that if it is a glitch then one of the devolopers might see it and fix it.

New deal notification

Is there anyway for me to get emails when new deals are posted without specifying words such as the store name or a product name? In other words, can I somehow get an email when a new deal in "hot deals" is posted no matter what it is for? I know I can see the deals by different time frames such as the last day, last 2 days, month etc... but instead of going thru old posts that get a new response, I'm interested only in the first post of the deal in as close to real time as possible. Or, maybe a setting on the site that will allow me to first see the NEW deals posted since my last visit BUT NOT replies to an older deal that was just posted. Thanks for any help.

I think the easiest way to see the newest deals would be to just sort the forum by Thread Start date. This will give you the newest threads, and not just the newest posts to a thread. You can do that in several ways: One is by just clicking on the Thread Started column title when you're in the forum, which will sort it this way temporarily, until you leave the forum. Then when you come back again just click that title if you want it to sort that way again. But if you want a more permanent type of thing you can use the filters to do basically the same thing. Set your filter to sort by thread start date, plus anything else you want to add or not (such as just in the last day, week, etc). Then you can choose to either set that as the default filter for that forum or just 'save' it for use whenever you want it later, by selecting those options at the bottom of the filters list.

You can also change the thread sorting options in your account settings, but this would make that apply to every forum, not just Hot Deals. You can set this under your Settings & Options > Edit Options, then scroll down to Thread Display Options and set the Thread Sorting Options default sort field to Threat Start Date.

There's also the Slickdeals Live page. It shows the newest threads as they're posted but it also shows the newest posts, too. You can specify it just for Hot Deals, but I don't think there's any way to set it to just new threads and nothing else. But it is a live feed, so it would save you from having to refresh the a forum page to see new threads.

If you're mostly wanting emails, though, I believe that the only way to get any email notifications without specifying specific words is to set a deal alert for either Front Page or for any thread in that forum that reaches a minimum of 2 thumbs. But this won't get you the newest threads, just any thread as soon as it hits the Front Page or reaches 2 thumbs or more.

You can, I believe, subscribe to whole forums (at least it's available in the thread tools dropdown) but the only options for that are daily/weekly digest.

Sorry, that's about all I can think of at the moment. If I missed anything or left a better way out, then hopefully someone else will post it for you :)

I want my privacy back. Is there a thread that specifically explains how to have complete privacy?? Cause this edit does NOT work for me!

Why do you say it doesn't save? Are the boxes unchecked when you go there again, or because it isn't hiding old ones?

It's not supposed to remove the old, existing entries. You have to do that manually through the private activity stream.

In your Profile > Settings & Options > Edit Options Scroll down to Private Messaging and be sure to check the box for Save a copy of sent messages in my Sent Items folder by default.

I've searched high and low but I still can't seem to find information regarding the often daily "prize giveaways". Particularly, I'm looking to read up on the rules for participation, SD's random selection process, and winner notification info. As part of my crystallization process; the more I know, the better my chances of one day winning a prize. :)

Can someone point me in the right direction?

Thanks

Here are the terms and conditions.

A computer program randomly picks a winner, then we validate them and send a PM.
The winner will have 1 week to reply to the PM and claim their prize, after that we pick a new winner.

thanks

You have to wait until you have been here longer and participate in threads before you get that option.

Thanks for the info... I just read that it was more than a week. If the "potential prize winner fails to execute or return the Affidavit within 10 days of issuance", another winner is picked.

I will have to go back and look but I think that was in the case of an affidavit. In other words, if it's a big prize they have to fill out their W9 form and get it back to us within that time frame.

Yup. If the prize value is over $600, SD must report such prizes to the IRS which requires the affidavit. Prizes under $600 are golden.

Correct, that time frame is for that paperwork. The one week part comes into play for the claiming of the prize after they receive the PM from us that they have won.

Hi
I would like to be able to post a deal. How do I do that? I just spent about 30minutes looking for the answer and couldn't find one. The search box only took me in circles. I'm sure it is a link that I somehow overlooked. I've tried looking for it a few times and never found it.

Thank you for all that you do to make this site a great one!
