Would this be alright as a lightly used Database server?

It's perfect for it. It has 4 memory slots, runs quiet and cool and relatively powerful for its size. Throw 16gb of cheap ddr3 memory, an SSD or two and possible a 2tb green drive and you are good to go.

ejtt7ciia 09-11-2012 07:53 AM

Better that a NAS is some senses . . . 4 3.5" drive bays, add an optical drive, and very fast transfer speeds. Think I'll pick one up just in case, to tinker with or something!

nicessgg 09-11-2012 08:03 AM

is the CPU somewhat weak for a multiple purpose server, such as NAS, etc.?

cgigate 09-11-2012 08:06 AM

does it take 4x8gb DDR3?
i would like to build a esx

AGpennypacker 09-11-2012 08:14 AM

i have this. no the cpu isn't too weak for nas purposes, quite the opposite actually.

However, some quirks: there is space for a slimline drive, but no way to safely attach it to the server. in the manual they mention some sort of add on so that the drive stays in but it's no where to be found, no way to buy it. not a big deal - i just frankenstein'd it with velcro and zipties.

no power cord. seriously, mine (brand new and from newegg) didn't come with one. no biggie they are cheap.

memory sticks need to be "fujitsu approved" otherwise you will get a screen warning EVERY TIME YOU STARTUP THE MACHINE. there is no way to turn it off (that i've found), and it requires you to "Press Any Key" EVERY TIME. super annoying. I got an extra 2 GB ECC ram from newegg.

it's loud. the front fan is not inaudible, unlike what it claims.

if you are installing 4 sata drives, you will need 1 extra sata cable, not a big deal.

if i had to do it over again, i would pay $100 extra for the hp n40l microserver ( i have one already, but needed another server.) much better support and easier to setup IMO.

ECC memory - not sure if it's mandatory for this mb. 16GB (4x4gb) ECC udimms runs above $100.

If the NAS requires more powerful processor than AMD Sempron 145 than there is something wrong with your setup.

The only review I found that gives the inside of S2 is a two-part video on youtube, in japanese:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PdTlJc5H5aM
If 3 drives are stacked on one side of the case at the front area, it may be very close to each other and produce extra heat. I couldn't tell if there are fans at the front panel though.

wbuhrman 09-11-2012 08:38 AM

ECC memory is NOT required according to the manual. My unit is quiet and did come with a power cord. I installed Ubuntu server on it and it seems to run quite well with the stock 2GB RAM. I plan to upgrade the RAM when I find a deal.

It is a low profile chassis. So if you plan to add any additional cards, they will need to be low profile.

no ecc is not required, but with my uptime i went with ecc. however, i can almost guarantee that you will get the "Memory is not approved" message every time you start up if it's not ecc.

sirfergy 09-11-2012 08:53 AM

I have non-ecc installed on mine and do not get that warning. Maybe you have a BIOS setting on that warns on all errors?

Also, the FX-8100 works great in this machine. You can pick one up on ebay for dirt cheap.

checked bios, it's a no go. do you have the non ecc in position 1?

Good question. I've got several 1155 systems that run on 32gb no problem but have yet to try it on an AM3 system. You'll probably want to replace the CPU as it is only single core and that would really cramp ESX.

According to newegg, this is a quiet system: "85% efficient power supply unit, very silent (21dB in idle mode), great price-performance ratio.". This system is overkill for NAS but slightly anemic for ESX.

nullDude 09-11-2012 09:15 AM

I've been waiting to pull the trigger on a low power home server. I was looking at the ZBox i3 line but this is tempting.

wbuhrman 09-11-2012 09:20 AM

Max. memory in this system is 16 GB.

johnkubik 09-11-2012 09:23 AM

any chance someone could recommend a low profile GPU to go along with this? Would this make an alright HTPC?

johnkubik 09-11-2012 09:25 AM

Oh, also, does it support booting off of USB -- as to install windows or other oses from a USB device?

wolverine88 09-11-2012 09:44 AM

what's the maximum number of 3.5HD it can take? Will it take 5 HD drives? Does it have enough SATA and power cables for it? How about external SATA option? For $150, it's cheap.

CPU - $30
250HD - $20
2GB RAM - $10
MB - $50
Case - $50

My only concert is its PSU. Is it standard? My HP EX475 just died, I don't want to spend a lot to get a new PSU. It'll be around $80 or so. I might end up building a server by myself.

Yes, it will boot off USB. I did exactly this with an external DVD drive to boot Ubuntu and install. Didn't even have to change a BIOS setting.

fire62 09-11-2012 10:29 AM

Would this be alright to run multiple game servers off of? IE Minecraft, Counter-Strike, Battlefield, etc

I have a fanless low-profile Nvidia GT-520 card in the exact same system. Works great in Ubuntu for playing back 1080p video, with audio over HDMI to my TV, once you disable the nouveau driver and also the "Composite" extension in xorg.conf.

I bought the Gigabyte version [newegg.com] when it was on sale for $25 AR.

wolverine88 09-11-2012 10:41 AM

1. According to this http://wiki.nothing.sh/page/%C9%D...MX130%20S2
Looks like it's a standard ATX PSU.

2. Here is the low profile eSATA bracket in case anyone wants for $5. Anyone can get a cheaper bracket?

http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-co...file+esata

You can
upgrade CPU to any AM3+ (like Quad/Six Core, don't go for extreme powerful one due to heat)
4 slots RAM will take non-ECC (possible POST pause) or ECC,
onboard 6 SATA ports
max 4 of 3.5" HD.
Low profile card only (1 PCI, 1 PCIe 16x, 2 PCIe 1x) like video card upgrade, gigabit lan card
standard ATX PSU (this is key, I have HP EX475, it uses special HP PSU, it's quite expansive for $80)

The lowest price it hit was $140.

quickbike 09-11-2012 11:37 AM

Anyone have experience with this and Windows 7 as an HTPC, thanks! Obviously with a new video card. Your thoughts.

This is an awesome box.
I upgraded to
FX-6100 6-core,
16GB of RAM

ESXi 5.0 with 12 virtual machines.

This is an unbeatable ESXI virtualization "home lab" server

webjock,

Can you confirm

1. Is the PSU standard ATX format? I hope yes.
2. Does it take non-ECC RAM? I guess yes.
3. Does it come with any eSATA bracket? I guess no.
4. To install 4 HDs, do I need to buy any extra accessories? I hope no.

Thx.

1. no. It could be proprietary or pico atx
2. Yes. I am running 16GB corsair. somebody has 32GB running on his.
3. No. you can find those for $5 on amazon. low-profile.
4. you will need one 3.5 to 5" hdd and an extra sata cable.

The earlier thread has a lot of info

thanks, I have all extra stuffs, my only concern is the PSU. They charge ridiculously on the server PSU. likely in $100.

wolverine88 09-11-2012 01:37 PM

Looks like this is its PSU

http://www.amazon.com/Genuine-Del...B002WPSS28

not too bad for $25 bucks.

yes, it does look like that psu but will it fit?

I like mine. I plan to buy 3 more.

it does boot off USB. You can set up an internal usb stick.
There are 2 free USB motherboard headers and all you need is a $4 internal USB dongle to hide the usb stick inside the case.

wolverine88 09-11-2012 03:38 PM

Just pulled the trig. Plan to

move my 4HD from dead HP EX475 into this
get a low profile eSATA bracket at Amazon
install WHS 2011

Any recommendation for 4GB ECC RAM?

Take a look at:

http://fortysomethinggeek.blogspo...board.html

The dongle plugs right on the motherboard. you then secure it inside. you can zip-tie to a sata cable.

The box also has front and rear usb.

low profile eSATA bracket?
low profile firewire card?

I picked up one of these for educational purposes. What upgrades should I consider? Seems like the CPU could use an upgrade. Also for those who have one of these from the previous deal, what RAM did you use? Thanks.

No. I boot headless with no keyboard/monitor. I have no bios prompts or anything like that.

Captain_Kirk 09-12-2012 11:13 AM

Thanks for the links webjock. Are you happy with the performance of the cpu?

karter74 09-20-2012 10:23 AM

Anyone having trouble loading FreeNAS? I can't get it to boot. And I did set the SATA to AHCI. I get fatal trap 12 error.

webjock 09-20-2012 12:35 PM

FYI.

I got 32GB of RAM running on this for an extra $123.

This RAM works with ESXI5:
