MK808 Dual Core Rockchip RK3066 With Android 4.1 Jelly Bean HDMI TV PC Stick ($61.99 and $74.99)

Hey all,

This is my first post here *puts on flame proof vest*, so here goes, I've been doing quite a bit of research on android PC's and the MK808 appears to be the new kid on the block, haven't found any reviews for it, but when I get mine, I'll do a write up and answer any questions you all may have.

Link to geekbuying.com for $61.99 and free shipping with coupon code VUOAVEHL, I've never heard of them and combed the interwebs for more information on them, but found nothing, but they're paypal verified, and for $10 less than the in4dealz.com link below, I'll give it a shot.

Both sellers offer free shipping.

Both sellers sell a package that includes:
1x MK808 Dual Core Android 4.1 TV BOX Mini PC
1x HDMI Cable
1 x User Manual
1 x Power Adapter
1 x USB Cable

$61.99 and free shipping with coupon code VUOAVEHL link to geekbuying.com: http://www.geekbuying.com/item/MK...07415.html

$74.99(Free shipping) link to in4dealz.com: http://www.in4dealz.com/deals/MK8...st-600268/

***Update 9/26***

Big thanks to rajM for the coupon code! Makes the deal even more likable.

Also, got an e-mail from geekbuying.com today that was titled like this: "Your order#******* with McBub.com has been sent out"

This appears to be a pretty reputable site according to this:

http://www.resellerratings.com/store/McBub

Hopefully it will arrive by the end of the week and I can get you guys more information, until then, head over to the google play store and check out there $.25 app sale.

***Update 10/5***

It arrived on 9/27 and was well packaged. Took 5 days from order to arrival from China, that is pretty good in my book.

I ordered an RC11 wireless remote with it, the remote works flawlessly and makes interaction with the MK808 painless and quite nice.

As it is out of the box, I have a hard time recommending this item out of the box, the stock Jelly Bean ROM is chalked full of more bugs than I care to list.

However, I've since flashed an Ice Cream Sandwich ROM from here:

http://www.armtvtech.com/armtvtec...?f=13&t=53

Huge thanks goes out to deadhp1 for the ROM and the forum.

The Ice Cream Sandwich ROM still has it's bugs, which I'm noticing includes some sketchy Wi-Fi at times, but I'm testing a Wi-Fi keep alive app that appears to have alleviated the problem at the moment.

Netflix comes in nicely, but everything I try to run through adobe flash has the audio out of sync.

For $65, I'm pleased after flashing the new ROM, still hoping a future ROM really makes this thing purr.

***Update 10/8***

A fix for the crop problems with the device

In Jelly Bean

Settings -> Display -> Zoom

Will probably be maxed out, just click OK and voila, full screen, still not the full 1080p, but at least the black bars of doom are gone.

looks interesting - I'll wait for the in-depth reviews as I take it these can be fairly hit or miss products.

Glad that it supports "NETFIX" in the description :)

No remote control included... how do you operate this?

buzz86us 09-22-2012 07:32 PM

Considering getting one of these as the brains to my 10' netbook lapdock the Chinese manufacturers need to get in the market of making shells for these to make them modular to use with a tablet shell, a phone shell etc.

Plug in your wireless mouse and keyboard or get the K400. JB should support all that, get a USB hub for all the connectivity.

Yes, but a powered USB hub, one with a solid 2+ amps, because otherwise you will have a slow processor, or an unnecessary power cord sticking out of it, in addition to the USB and the hdmi.
I'm also looking forward to the mk808 review and a future minix neo g4 review.

That same geekdeal place that OP posted has a bundle for the Mk808 + a 2 in 1 wireless remote for $90.

http://www.geekbuying.com/item/Bu...07545.html

basically, $65 for the stick and $25 for the remote. Normally the remote is around $30 to $35, so i'm guessing you're just saving on shipping.

Evidently, there's a very strong rumor that the MK808 is now being produced with BT built-in. In the link above, the reviewer (deadhp1) is organizing a group buy (150 units) to bring the price down to $55 for all interested being part of the group. There's information (not substantiated yet) that the Chinese factory which these unit are being sold may very well have already incorporated BT into the dongle. The option for turning on BT is already in the software settings for the current model eventhough BT is not yet built in. This would suggest that the MK808's are a stone's through away from having BT built in. Persoally, BT is the only thing holding me back as less dongle's sticking out of the stick is a cleaner look, plus it leaves room for one to hook up a HD via the usb port.

The final "gravy on top" would be having the kernal info released for this thing so the community could start kicking out optimized ROMs. The Chinese can usually glue together half way decent hardware units, but their software implementation and optimization is a joke compared to what the community can create.

All you need to do is register to the forum and then reply in the "MarketPlace" subforum thread regarding the group buy that you are interested.

There's so many of these, and I even tried to original RokuMagic one and didn't like it, mainly because of the Android OS.

Is there one that just supports Ubuntu and can run it easily with a keyboard and mouse off it no problem? Seems like a new one is coming out every day.

Based on the reviews, this is nothing more than a toy to mess around with. If you can't change the video resolution, I hardly see the point of it as a media device.

smithmal 10-01-2012 06:39 AM

I agree with all these statements regarding the MK808's current limitations however I think these limitations are more firmware related than hardware. A ROM has already been created giving the user root access and full Google Market Play. The cool thing with the MK808 is that is easily flashable. As with all things Android, once the kernal gets released and the modding community gets a hold of it, I really think there will be some dramatic improvements. From my readings it would seem the ICS firmware is less buggy than the JB however both firmwarres have their issue including:

- WiFi using "N" only network
- Resolution issues
- CPU underclocking

max1001 10-03-2012 07:25 PM

I only the UG802 which is pretty much identical in term of specs for this and I would say wait for the Amlogic-MX Android Stick to come out instead. Rk3066 has lower community rom support and XBMC support.

Amlogic on the other hand already release the linux source code so there's a good chance you can load different distro in the future.
XBMC also has release android apk that has FULL HW accerlation for this chipset.

Fix the crop problems

In Jelly Bean

Settings -> Display -> Zoom

Will probably be maxed out, just click OK and voila.

In ICS

Settings -> Display -> Zoom

Drag it all the way to the right and click OK and voila.

Doesn't fix the lack of full 1080p, but it does fix our crop problems.

Although I'm alittle skeptical. During checkout, the title is:

[Free Air Mouse keyboard] MK808 Android 4.1 Jelly Bean Mini PC RK3066 A9 Dual Core Stick TV Dongle UG802 III with Remote Control

It lists the MK808 and also pictures it... but then it also says UG802 III with Remote control.

[Update]
I ended up buying one from GeekBuying.com using the coupon code: VUOAVEHL and creating a combo to add in the RC11 Air Mouse for $81 shipped. A little more expensive then the above but the Aliexpress deal required $10 shipping so it almost nils the savings. I also have heard some scandalous shipping methods from AliExpress. That coupled with the awkward title, I'd rather not chance it.

Here is the link: http://www.geekbuying.com/item/MK...07415.html

At the bottom it lets you Combo the Air mouse.
