If you think about it, the G5 goes to $25 on BF, which means this mouse might hit $15 AR of course.

And in case anyone's wondering, The g400 now that it's improved is probably the best gaming mouse out there.

Since it's optical and not laser, it has minimal liftoff distance, and that is a physical feature, and not a latency driven sensor reading. Which means the performance will be more consistent.

Yeah but black friday is like 2 months away

odie5533 09-23-2012 05:27 PM

I bought this for the same price about a week ago to replace my MX518 which has angle snapping. The G400 is a great mouse and I can definitely see myself using it for many years.

I think the G400 is a successor to the MX518.

Indeed. No angle snapping and no acceleration though. Even though you could adjust the acceleration on the MX518. I'm waiting for this to hit $25 and I'll add it to my collection.

AznVamp 09-24-2012 01:01 AM

G500 was only $40 on Amazon last week. I prefer that mouse a lot more than this one.

moshassuk 09-24-2012 01:41 AM

Any good reasons to upgrade to this if my mx518 still works fine?

sealclubber 09-24-2012 02:21 AM

Best Buy [bestbuy.com] has ti for the same price.

5% discover CB plus 2x BB points sealed the deal for me. Sorry Amazon, you lose this time.

The only thing would be the texture of the mouse. I remember my mx518 feeling really slimy after gaming for a bit. The G400 and G500 do not feel that way.

Amazon is going to lose a lot since they tax CA. To counter the tax we need to go through some cashback sites, and BB has them everywhere. Also w/ BB, we get it a lot faster since we can pick up at any B&M store.

I much prefer the G500 scroll wheel to the ones on the G5s I've had in the past (both versions). I've never tried an MX518 or G400 before, but aren't the scroll wheels on those similar to the G5?

Can someone compare MX518/G400 shape to a G5 or G500? I really like the way my G500 is shaped coming from a G5, which had a bit of a cramped right side.

It likely depends on what mouse you use now. Though I haven't used the G400, I strongly preferred my older wired Microsoft Sidewinder "gaming mouse" to my current wireless Logitech M510 for general computer usage and tracking accuracy (though the presence of side-scrolling and hyper-scrolling are definite upsides for the M510 which the Sidewinder lacked).

jcl1 09-24-2012 11:56 AM

I bought this from Best Buy for this price a couple weeks ago. It was way too big for my hand. Took it back and exchanged it for a G300 which not only is more comfortable, lights up, has DPI settings, and it has more programmable buttons for a few dollars less.

Good keyboard is a really personal question, even more so than good mouse. There have been a few mechanical keyboards on sale lately for around $65, but I can't vouch for them because I am using a membrane keyboard myself. If you are looking for high end though, mechanical keyboards seem the way to go and will cost $50 or more.

How does this compare to g9x?

revoc 09-24-2012 07:36 PM

The g400 is currently the best gaming mouse on the market. I like the color scheme it uses - gray and black. It's almost like Logitech is pitting it against the venerable Intellimouse Explorer.

bonezy19 09-24-2012 07:39 PM

Have and love this mouse. It's a back-up for my Logitech G9, but it's still superb. Wired is the only way to go -- even for normal use, but especially for gaming.

I wouldn't say it's the *best* gaming mouse on the market. I've owned about 7 different Razer mice, about 10+ Logitech mice, and countless MS and other mice over the years. Currently, my favorite (for my budget) has been the Logitech G9. Ergonomics can't be beat for the price, the balance is amazing, and the traction feels great on almost every surface -- plus interchangeable weights. I have both the G9 and the G400, so I think the G9 (and its successor the G9x) are better than the G400 in every way. Of course, it also costs more.

If I had the money, I'd give the R.A.T.S. and their clones a try.

Like I said in my quote above, the G9 and the G9x are better in every way -- feel, balance, build quality, traction, and ergos. Only downside is that the G9x can cost twice as much as the G400.

Source: I own both.

the sensor in the g9/g9x is awful.... dont know how anyone who takes mice seriously would consider one over the g400 (mx518)

works great even without 3rd party drivers. just updated to mountain lion and works perfect.but i guess it couldnt hurt setting up specific functions for all the buttons. gotta love the new gestures on mountain lion, its so amazing, i just leave the mouse for its intended purposes...gaming!!! haha

Thx OP. My wife likes this mouse over the G9X. This bigger and longer than the G9X which fits her better. Now we both have backups of the mouse we use. Bought this on Amazon instead of BB. BB apparently doesn't ship to my zip code but sadly they have a B&M only 5-7 mins from my house.

So tempted to bite... have a g9x but the claw grip hurts larger hands like hell after 1-2 hours of gaming. Is there any way to make the g9x feel like the g400 or should I just pony up the $30 and give the g9x to someone with midget hands?

I've encountered the same problem. My G400 came in this last weekend and I couldn't be happier. I used the MX518 for about 5 or 6 years previous to the G9x.

It's predection of a straight line, even if you don't want one. It's fine for RTS games, but for FPS games it can be a problem, YMMV. More info in the link below.

http://defragdev.com/blog/?tag=angle-snapping

jpk1080 09-25-2012 09:23 AM

Do u know if its on by default in the 500 or g5

Forty0zFreedom 09-25-2012 09:32 AM

So this DOESN'T have 'angle snapping?' I want to get this but I do Photoshop work and video editing also. I bought a cheap 'gaming mouse' at Newegg that has great reviews but I always notice the cursor going in straight lines when I don't want it to. I can't believe some would consider this a good thing . . Its maddening.

r0ge 09-25-2012 09:32 AM

Supposedly you can turn off prediction/angle snapping in the G500 with drivers but the acceleration can't be fixed.

jpk1080 09-25-2012 09:36 AM

Guess I didn't notice. Wesaid the 400 didn't have it

The newer versions of the G400 don't have angle snapping. More info can be found below, but basically 99.9% of mice with a PID LZ13333 or higher will not have angle snapping/prediction.

Marshillboy 09-25-2012 12:03 PM

I play competitive TF2 (an FPS) and I've never noticed any negative impact caused by the "angle snapping" of the MX518. The only time it's ever bothered me is when I'm using photoshop, where single pixel precision actually matters. It's really not nearly as big a deal as people make it out to be.
