Always with the direct deposit! No love for us self-employed folks.

Since I don't live in PA, NJ, DE, MD or VA, I apparently can't open an account (at least, the online form says so). Anyone figure out a way around this?

Is the bill pay limited to merchants? Can't you just gift yourself 3 payments with paypal then withdrawal the money via direct deposit later?

It would be great if someone who did the prior promo can tell us whether opening an account leads to a hard pull? Looked at the old thread and didn't find anything definitive.

I did this promo the last time. If I recall correctly they did not even pull my credit at all. You can call any branch and ask them to confirm.

BTW, for all the people TD'ing the deal because they are unable to replicate - If I understand correctly that you are crapping on the deal because you personally are not in the bank footprint, and for no other reason, you are pretty childish. Appears a legit deal from a legit bank.

Do they do a hard credit check?

mZimm 10-09-2012 05:54 AM

I've never applied for a checking account that does a hard credit pull. I'd be very surprised if this one did.

The last time I did this promo, they did not pull my credit at all. It was actually pretty easy. For Bill Pay, all you need to do is make a partial payment of any amount on your utility bill or credit card bill. I got a Kindle Fire which I flipped on ebay. Plus I referred a friend to this promo and received another $50 referral fee from the bank.

picklesk 10-09-2012 06:02 AM

Is there any way to do a direct deposit to yourself (like from another account)? I am self employed. I wanted to do this last time, but didn't because of the direct deposit.

I probably wouldn't try this unless you have a friend/family member who would let you use their address. You wouldn't want some random person getting your free Fire HD.

I was actually thinking of maybe getting a PO box online for a PA city and then fill out a forwarding address but you have to go in to give them 2 forms of ID. Looks like there might not be a way around this one. Dang

A direct deposit from another checking account should satisfy this.

Once I even setup direct deposits from the *same* account, but I doubt this will work in general.

opie11 10-09-2012 09:44 AM

Anybody know how long you have to keep the account active?

ksquires1991 10-09-2012 09:46 AM

Two questions:
1st: Is it just a one time direct deposit. In other words could I have my dad direct deposit me some money from his bank account to mine once and that would qualify?
2nd: If I setup automatic payment for my credit card for three months would this qualify for the three bill payments?

Thanks!

minimalist 10-09-2012 10:12 AM

I live in DC, 4 miles away from their Bethesda, MD office. Does anyone know if I can open an account in their branch if I'm not an MD resident?

1 - If the ACH transfer from another account would satisfy the requirement then yes, you should be fine with that one time transfer.
2 - you have to pay 3 bills in 60 days, so you would have to time it pretty well if you only have this one bill to pay. Alternatively, you could set it up to pay a "bill" to your dad, which he could transfer back to you through the online transfer. However, you would likely need to send it to a different address than the one on the account.

nohomers1 10-09-2012 10:24 AM

I should have waited, I got in on the the regular Kindle from them from the deal earlier this year.

Ahh ok. I have a couple credit cards, so I guess I could do a bill pay to three of them. Thanks for your help!!!!!

apap 10-09-2012 10:30 AM

Can anyone confirm that got in on this from the last time that this deal was running that they were able to satisfy the direct deposit requirement by transferring funds from another bank account?

The fine print on the deal page states:
"The direct deposit requirement is limited to Social Security, pension or payroll and must be completed within 60 days of account opening."

I just got off the phone with them and they said there is a 6-8 week waiting period after you meet the criteria. She also let me know that if I end up moving out of state that I can change my address and get it shipped to where I actually live :D
But to open an account I need to either go in there or have them send me paper work. Not going to work with a fake address.

KIRSYSCREATIONS 10-09-2012 10:43 AM

I suspect they are going to have lots of accounts being opened and not a whole lot of Kindles being shipping.

Unfortunately, you do not live in a state currently serviced by Fulton Bank.

You do reside in a state serviced by one of our sister banks, Fulton Bank of New Jersey.

It states when you do a search that there is a location in South Plainfield, NJ near me.

When I did this the last time, I got it much sooner than that. If I recall correctly, it was like 2-3 weeks.

KIRSYSCREATIONS 10-09-2012 10:56 AM

OK - NJ is included.

The link on the first post is for the PA branch. It was a bit misleading since it did not bring up the promo page on the Fulton Bank of NJ site.

I spoke with someone and it is indeed valid for NJ residence. Sorry about that.

I would assume its safe to close after you get the Kindle. I doubt they have a Kindle repo team.
But they might try to bill you or something, I'd read all the ToS and fine print.

How can this be the only time? I can name a bunch of reasons to be sad when living in California:

1. Higher Taxes
2. Tax on Amazon Shipments.
3. $5/gallon Gas.
4. Earthquakes

Now there are a bunch of reasons to be happy as well.. but if this is the ONLY time you have ever been upset living in California than other places - you must not get a weekly paycheck. lol.

I live in Pa. - I think I'm going to go grab one. No reason not to. I can set up direct deposit and just withdrawal it.

Just want to see how long I have to keep the account open for to not pay them back anything. (I use the credit union and they are great thus far - no reason to switch)

Quick question deposit recurring $250.00 so I can do a One time $250 & then do three bill pays right after it is deposited & then I should have meet my obligation? Also Free checking I should be able to lose anytime with no penalty correct? Thanks

That's the way I understood the fine print. I filled out the application about an hour ago, and Fulton Bank just called me to confirm I was approved for the checking account. By the way I live in PA also.

tried with a MD address and got this:

Unfortunately, you do not live in a state currently serviced by Fulton Bank.

You do reside in a state serviced by one of our sister banks, The Columbia Bank.

Fulton Financial Corporation has banks in 5 states on the east coast. Please take a look at our servicing area.

Our question is.. Applying for THE COLUMBIA BANK qualifies for the kindle PROMO?

Check with the banker - you may be eligible if you deposit minimum $300 monthly

I just searched the last thread about this and an ACH transfer from another bank account "ING" seemed to work.

here is the link:

here is the quote

Mine just got delivered via UPS! It came in a white box from "Fulton Financial" and originated from, "East Petersburg, PA" and required a signature.

As I mentioned above, I had everything finished by April 17 so they seem to be processing 1 month behind. For those wondering, I used a transfer from my ING account rather than an actual direct deposit and it seemed to work fine.

All in all, I'm pretty happy this worked :-)

Thanks again, OP!

Quick question deposit recurring $250.00 so I can do a One time $250 & then do three bill pays right after it is deposited & then I should have meet my obligation? Also Free checking I should be able to lose anytime with no penalty correct? Thanks

"single monthly reoccurring direct deposit of $250 or more within 60 days of account opening"

Its Monthly recurring.. So, just one time deposit wont work. You need to do it at least twice I think since its a 60 day period before which you can close the account.

You are partially correct. They give you 60 days. So if you deposit within the last 30 days you should be good with just 1 :D

Did this with Fulton last year and am still enjoying my Kindle Fire. Not eligible for the Kindle Fire HD.. they did ding me full retail price of the Fire on the 1099 they sent.

maybe fellow sd'ers would know the answer to this: why do some banks like this one and Chase not offer accounts to those who live outside their service area ? How does it stand in today's age of internet banking ? Any sane reason for this ? Like regulations and such ?

Bottom of the application says that. Are people who did this before sure there's no hard pull involved?

I would assume that they send you a 1099 for the value of the device, which is about $200. The tax would depend on your tax bracket for federal income taxes and whatever the income tax rate is in your state.

Someone has gotten the previous deal for a regular kindle fire by making a $250 ACH from an ING bank account. YMMV. Personally I'm going to try an ACH from my bank as soon as my account gets verified and hope there is some indication I will be receiving my kindle after making 3 bill payments before the 60 days are up, or I'll start panicking.

marian03 10-09-2012 01:15 PM

do you know if there will be a hard credit pull for fulton bank of new jersey? its asking for ssn number and in fine print says:

** EDIT: Looks like they do not offer free ACH Push.

misel00 10-09-2012 01:19 PM

Can anyone tell me if ACH out, meaning sending your money from this new account back to your everyday checking savings via ACH has a fee? there online info says "there may be a fee" ? That is very vague!

astr0z0mb1e 10-09-2012 01:23 PM

Soft pull on the credit report. They are checking to see if you have any other checking accounts outstanding & to see if you ever had an overdraft, or anything like that.

I asked a rep.

If this is during the 2nd page (checking the info they have against your zip, loans, etc), then no. They did have zip codes listed where none of them were where I lived though - trick question.

I believe it is this:
"A safekeeping service offered by banks and other depository institutions. With check safekeeping, the bank holds all of a customer's cancelled checks (or at least a copy of them) and does not return them to the parties that wrote the checks. Instead, the customer is sent a detailed statement outlining all checks that were paid, plus the amounts and names of the payees."

Their terms state:

Promotion is limited to one Kindle Fire per household/address. If you were an account holder on a deposit account that was closed within the last 12 months for any reason with any Fulton Financial Corporation affiliate bank, you are not eligible to participate in the Kindle campaign. BTW, for all the people TD'ing the deal because they are unable to replicate - If I understand correctly that you are crapping on the deal because you personally are not in the bank footprint, and for no other reason, you are pretty childish. Appears a legit deal from a legit bank.

Yeah, we don't have Costco, Trader Joe's, BJ's, Fry's, Staples, Office Max, Meiers, HHGregg, or MicroCenter in Louisiana so I think I'll thumb down all those deals as unreplicable, right? Grow the heck up people. Sometimes you can get in on a good deal, and sometimes you can't. I can assure you, that after reading that long list of stores that I don't have access to, that there have been a HUGE number of deals that I could not get in on. Sure, it sucks getting left out because of geography, but you just move on. Trust me, I wish I could have gotten in on this deal as we were already planning on getting my son a Kindle FireHD for Christmas and getting it free like this would have been awesome. Sadly I'm not able to get in on the deal, but that doesn't make it a bad deal. It's still a very slick deal, and I'm giving it a thumbs up even though I can't get in on it.

I'd hop to a bank for 3-6 months to get a $200 tablet in a heartbeat, and then hop my happy and tablet laden behind back to my credit union as soon as I had fulfilled my obligations for this deal and knew I was getting the FireHD.

Does ANYONE know if this is 100% a soft pull? I would not waste a hard pull for a $200 tablet. Also, does PayPal count as a direct deposit?

Exact same message for me as well. I got this message on the first section of the application itself. I am also applying from their NJ back website

Do anyone know a work around this ?

I called them and they told me your location is 45 mins away from the nearest branch and that's the reason online system will not allow you to open account. They can take the application by phone but you still have to go to branch to sign the necessary paperwork..
or you can go to branch and they will open an account for you...

I don't believe that. When I called in she said they could send me the paperwork but they don't like to because it takes longer for everything to get done.

i called in as well and they told there will be something wrong at transunion end....i am guessing it has to be distance from your home address...for me the nearest one is about 20miles..so tool must be automatically blocking people who live in far off places from these banks.
anyhow, i have given up. skipping on this now.

btlist 10-10-2012 02:12 PM

I signed up online last night and just got a call that they can't open my account because I don't live in their service area. I am in PA, but in the Pittsburgh area. :( :( :(

Joeboo25 10-10-2012 03:01 PM

I just got the cancellation call myself. I'm in Virginia, but apparently you have to be within 150 miles of a branch. Arrgh...

peppermint 10-10-2012 11:57 PM

I got a call from them saying they are sending me the signature card

jojo2008 10-11-2012 12:01 AM

If I withdraw $250 from paypal would that count as direct deposit?

cyclops13 10-11-2012 07:58 AM

Even I got same error while applying online, but it has nothing to do with the distance to branch, cuz I've got 3 in a 2 mile radius. No worries, I went to the branch and opened up an account!

And I was already looking to change banks as my current bank cut their M-F and Saturday hours back, and totally dropped their Sunday hours. Fulton hasn't done that yet.

The terms say it has to be a paycheck, social security check, or something like that. They MAY actively check if a transfer is from paypal or a similar service and not count it. I believe an ACH transfer from another bank has a good chance of working, though.

Alternatively, somebody else suggested withdrawing from an Amazon Merchant Account, which has a better chance of working than paypal, if you get payments that way, also.

Anybody try requesting the Kindle Fire HD 8.9"?? Maybe the 32 GB version without ads??

SL 10-11-2012 08:44 AM

Same story with me- got the call day after applying. In my case I was told 20 miles but "30 max." I am 120 miles from closest branch (according to their website).

clar 10-11-2012 10:34 AM

opened the account in branch and received a note that said:

Based on the timing of your fullfillment of the requirements and our file verification process, most Kindle Fire 7" HD deliveries will not be received until after the 2012 holiday season.

A value up to $199 will be reported to the IRS on form 1099 if you receive an Amazon Kindle Fire 7" HD

I wish they'd made it more clear. I kind of got my hopes up...

I was also getting ready to open a second account in my current bank, so the timing would have worked out for this one.

musicdef13 10-11-2012 03:06 PM

Did this last time. Traded in Kindle Fire for $196 Amazon credit ($199-$3 gift return fee). It was awesome.

WAD 10-11-2012 03:32 PM

Fulton's getting very stingy. I got the dreaded "outside our region" phone call. I live in Pittsburgh and the closest one is State College (PSU). No go for me. Any idea of sister branches in Pitt?

dotcomjunkie 10-11-2012 06:46 PM

Completed form online, printed signature card and mailed next day. Got a call from a friendly representative from the local branch and she said everything was in order and all they needed was the signature card. So far so good.

SL 10-11-2012 06:49 PM

Have 5 branches within 20 miles of my home. Plus, have received several pre-approval letters from them in the past for credit cards. Guess I lucked out.

jrb5333 10-12-2012 05:48 AM

Was i supposed to print out this signature card?

My account is still pending since i have not received a call yet. But i have multiple banks within 20 miles of my address.

Has anyone received their card in the mail yet? I may make a call today or just stopbyt the bank physically.

This ended up working out for me since i moved and currently the closest Franklin Mint branch is about 45 minutes away.

For Bill Pay, all you need to do is make a partial payment of any amount on your utility bill or credit card bill. I got a Kindle Fire which I flipped on ebay. Plus I referred a friend to this promo and received another $50 referral fee from the bank.

I am not aware of a link. However, you might want to ask your branch to see if they have any $50 referral bonus cards.

Any pointers to get the referral codes? I would not mind at all referring a few friends to a Free Kindle and get 50 bucks for doing that! :lmao:

That question was asked probably a dozen times and either nobody knows or doesn't want to answer.

astr0z0mb1e 10-15-2012 07:49 AM

cyclops13 10-19-2012 01:31 PM

Man, setting up the bill pay here is a pain! Finally its done.

How are you guys making the 3 bill pay transactions? Can I make 3 transactions to my credit card account or the utilities company, say for $50 each to qualify?

Yes, even partial payments count as a transaction. Utilities, credit card bills are all okay.

paid $10 bucks each to 3 separate credit cards last week. DD will happen in Nov. So no clue if I'll see KFHD this year.

Did you all get a debit card with your checks? I am pretty sure I asked for a debit card but didnt get one yet.

ericfw 10-22-2012 08:29 AM

The card came after the checks. Make sure they don't charge you the check ($34) as happened to me. It's a mistake as they claimed.

Chase did the same exact thing to me and I called up and complained and they told me they would credit back that same amount to my account within 10 business days.

SL 10-22-2012 06:52 PM

got my debit card and checks before account details and information... go figure.

I got the checks and then the card today. To sign up for the online bill you have to send in a form.... just not efficient to do online banking.... not likely to get the Kindle anytime soon.
