Price is pretty good but Black Friday is close... What does everyone think of this TV?

redhot 10-12-2012 05:18 AM

For sure great price for decent TV.

However, it looks like Edge lit and not back lit. I prefer back it even if it's 1"+ more thick than super thin edge lit TV.

Why is the advantage of edge lit?

Back Lit has LEDs all over the panel where as Edge Lit only has LEDs just around the panel and reason for not so good picture quality.

Back Lit > Edge Lit in terms of picture quality

Edge Lit > Back Lit in terms of thickness.

Plasma > LED/LCD Edge Lit or Back Lit in terms of picture quality

LED/LCD > Plasma in Energy Usage +$20 to $40 a year

I've never been able to snag a good TV on Black Friday. It seems like a scam. Do you go B&M or online?

jnook2 10-12-2012 06:38 AM

I think in the last few years online has been getting good... just have to camp SD that day and wait for the TV deals to begin coming in. Even track the deals a few days early as ads leak sometimes and then your ready to order.

I don't have too much experience with either but from my reading full back lit is better, but it can have blooming (brightness bleeding where it shouldnt on screen) which is painful for the price you pay for full back lit LED's...

I understand I'm talking somewhat apples and oranges here -- but is this 60" Sony LED really worth almost twice the price of the $800 LG 60" plasma that is on sale at Costco through the 31st? I guess if someone REALLY prefers LED to Plasma, it would make sense...but I can't fathom this being worth twice the price, even if I were in love with LED (I'm indifferent, prefer just a great deal).

The way I see it is that if I hold out to buying the Costco TV through a month out from Black Friday, I get all the time I need to find a better deal with no hassles about returning it.

(Edit: Forgot Costco is 90 days and not 30 days...hell, I'm going out to buy it now then)

The Sony probably weighs half of what the plasma screen weighs.

Which is a selling point since I intend on carrying it around the house with me like a boombox in the 1980's.

It is actually only a 30lb difference...80lbs to 110lbs...still, I will never understand why weight is relevant with a TV. You lift it once, done. That would be like saying that you were comparing two pieces of art to hang on your wall and you purposely selected the one that was 27% lighter because of the weight itself.

Back Lit > Edge Lit in terms of picture quality

Edge Lit > Back Lit in terms of thickness.

There is no way you are going to get an fully back lit LED for anywhere close to this price

one other aspect you didnt mention

Plasma >Edge lit( or back lit) is better picture quality for anyone sitting off angle from the TV

Some of the LED's ...exclding some of the higher end like the Sharp Elite...wash out color if you go more than 30 degrees off angle and try to look at the TV

Walking back and forth in the room , while looking at the TV, its easy to see color come and go in the picture on an LED

xjhuan 10-12-2012 11:24 AM

For best picture quality, what would you choice?

Plasma > led backlight > led edge?

Thanks!

you can't compare TVs like that. backlit LEDs are usually reserved for the top class of LED tvs, usually costing thousands of dollars. 95% of LED tvs are edge lit. Backlit LED tvs are usually held in higher regard compared to plasmas.

i had KDL52EX701 LED. It died after 14 months of use. sony initially denies my warranty. i had to fight and threaten to sue them so they finally acknowledged that i have 3 yr of warranty rather than 1 yr as they claimed. it took forever to try and fix it.the power source just died out of no where..they sent one to repair it, he nicked my LCD screen and broke it while fixing it, then claimed that my 4 yr old broke it (he was the only one with the tv in a locked room). he refused to give me paper work about what he fixed and what happened. sony did the same and refused to send me any documents. then sony denied my request to repair it and claimed that my son did.i told them to send me the written denial to fix it because im letting my lawyer handle it..after countless hours of phone conversations with some idiots over sea i demanded to talk to someone from USA headquarters. they were so unprofessional. eventually one day i got a call from them saying they will replace it with a refurbished KDL52NX800..they treated me like i was stealing. i had proof with pictures that my screen was clear of any damage prior to him coming, once they heard that, they offered to replace it.

this is my second sony tv that ends up in bad shape within 1-1.5 yrs (i had XBR1 SXRD TV-Paid 3500 for it)

I dont know if a good deal or not but honesty, i will never buy sony tv again..i paid total $5000 for 2 tvs..they both died within 1-1.5 yrs of use.
never again

That's a shame. I have had good luck with my last 2 Sonys. But, I will probably go panny plasma next time. The warranty stuff is a non-issue, I have the directv whole house warranty.

Yes, I just bought it last night.

LG 60PA6550

And it's freaking amazing. Watching my Yankees on it right now :)

I haven't researched of purchased a TV in five years, so I'm not sure how common this little swivel stand is that it comes with, but I love it. We have a very large living room and being able to adjust the angle of the TV depending on where I'm sitting is fantastic (not that viewing angles factor in much on this anyway).

I highly recommend this TV for this price. Remember - price adjustments are good for 30 days at Costco and returns are good for 90 days. Buy it now and keep on researching in case something better comes up at which time you can return this one.

iconian 10-15-2012 12:30 PM

looks like price dropped to $1479 and they added free wall mount and cables.

martinet 10-23-2012 11:23 AM

Looking at this versus Vizio E-Series 60" LED Razor Smart TV E601i-A3 for 990 w $10 coupon from tiger direct.

Is the Sony worth the extra $s?

HorseshoeBay 11-19-2012 06:35 AM

Price Drop

The Sony KDL60EX645 is now $1349 with free shipping at Best Buy, Sony.com, Amazon, and probably elsewhere.

foxiness 11-20-2012 05:25 AM

I just bought this TV $1100 with NY tax, it was 1349 with a employee 25% employee discount. Is this TV better than the Samsung UN60EH6000?

ededigital 11-25-2012 07:59 PM

I just got this Sony 60 KDL60EX645 for $1349 + tax and I also got a $150 Sony gift card with the purchase. Got this deal at the Sony store in San Diego.
