I don't think you make a thread like this before any deals come out. I predict though that a bunch of EA video games will be around $30.

PS4 I don't think is necessary yet. I believe we need more innovative and interesting games. It's not all about graphics and specs. Heck just got mine last year and still have a ton of games to play.

Agreed. I have a lot of PS3 games to play through. I've been adding to my library when I see critically acclaimed games for $9.99-$12.99 each. The graphics in PS3 games are still fantastic and I'd be glad to see the system around for a few more years, whereas with the Wii it was clear it needed more powerful hardware ASAP.

Looking forward to the new game from Quantic Dream, The Last Guardian, the new God of War, Bioshock Infinite, and still have a ton of released games to play.

We won't see a PS4 as it wasn't announced at E3 and we would normally see it shown there prior to launch.

Anthony Thomas 10-21-2012 12:51 PM

I haven't brought a PS3 yet either. I had the money several times to buy it, even at launch. When it launched again I said it and many others did as well, no blockbuster games and no GT5. Combined with a higher price point (and I am not one to complain about pricing) I didn't deem it worth my money.

I bought my Slim PS2 below $199 when they dropped the price to $179. There have been some discounts on the core system but again I don't feel like spending $200+ to play a handful of games. Plus "gaming" as sort of taken a backseat to other things, I was never a hardcore gamer anyway.

Playstation 3 provides value at below $200 at this point, I may actually get a older backward compatible model since space is valuable. As I said its just taken a backseat to other things...

Unless you use your 360 for most third party games, the PS3 has more than a handful of great titles. You just have to ask yourself what you want to play (genre wise) and if you're willing to try new things.

I love my PS3 250GB and got it for $300+ (with Uncharted 2, LittleBigPlanet and another DualShock 3 controller) at BestBuy about 2 years ago and I love it. I have all 3 consoles but I tend to play most of my multiplatform games on the PS3 as well as a long list of exclusives.

It really depends on if your willing to game a lot though. For $200 for a PS3 this Black Friday, I'd say that's a great deal.

niomosy 10-22-2012 12:21 AM

I need a blu-ray player and if there were a good deal on a bundle with Assassin's Creed 3.... ;)

Okay, I'm dreaming.

I don't have a 360 either. I have a Dreamcast, PS2, PS1 (2), Intellivision II, Nintendo DS and GB Color.

I love the PS3 as well, just not enough to buy it, yet.

As for games - GT5, Race Driver GRID, Madden, College Football, Warhawk, Dynasty Warriors 3 Gundam, Initial D Extreme Stage 3, Twisted Metal, NFS Shift (1&2), NFS: Hot Pursuit, GTA 4.

I think that will keep me occupied for awhile. I need to finish Vice City (just lazy, on the last mission end of the game), GT4 (Nurburgring Lap), Race Driver 2 & 3 both over 70% finished. I haven't played a football game since College Football 2005...

Other things have taken over importance, if the price is attractive BF 2012, I will pick one up.

Okay, I'm dreaming.

If you just need a BR Player they have dropped like a rock. With apps for about $100 and with WiFi for about $130 now.

AC3 bundle I believe they are still out there, I thought saw one in a BB lately (less than a week ago).

I heard Gamestop will be selling the new slimmer PS3 for $50 off. That goes for both models.

It's my hope that Amazon will have an awesome price drop. I just love no tax and free shipping on top of the sale price. I'll post any deals I see coming up on any model PS3.

me too...i have been without a ps3 for the last one month and it sucks...in my case more so for the lack of its blu-ray capability and the user friendly apps...to make matters worse i have purhcased over 25 blu-rays from gohastings/BB/Amazon in that period....seriously hoping that amazon will have a good deal on them as it is the number one item on my BF buy list

Greenarrow821 10-27-2012 08:09 AM

I'll definitely be looking for a PS3 on black friday, my old 60 gb suffered the fatal ylod and it lasted 5 good years though!

forthenguyen 10-28-2012 09:46 AM

According to CAG, the holiday bundle will be a 250GB Super Slim with the infamous Saga and Uncharted 1 and 2. I have an 80gb PS3 that I want to trade in to Gamestop for 170 so I can upgrade, but I'm not sure if I want to wait for Black Friday to get this bundle for 200 (basing this number on last year's bundle) or get the old 160GB slim, which I think is superior in every way but it costs 250.

diehllane 10-28-2012 11:13 AM

I'm expecting some great deals on games, possibly on accessories/controllers, too.

Someone else posted they're expecting EA games to be $30. I think that's very likely.
I'd also expect to see some other mid-year releases drop to $30 like we had last year (Assassin's Creed Revelations, Need for Speed, etc).

I'd be surprised to see any type of deal on a new game like Assassin's Creed 3, Call of Duty Black Ops 2 or Medal of Honor Warfighter as you pre-order deals available (basically $48) seems to have been the best you'll see until late January/early February (just my guess when they might have some sales).

We may have controllers discounted again like last year. I know Meijer did a $30 sale on dual shock 3 controllers for specific colors.

This will likely be the year we see some good discounts on Move bundles (Possibly buy 1 get 2 free on Move games when purchased with a Move bundle).

As for hardware, it can't get too cheap unless you're able to find a deal on an outdated model/bundle. Last year there was a deal on the 2010 holiday bundle where you could snag it for $150 + tax. If you're wanting something like discussed above where it'll come with some much better games, you're going to pay 200-225 base price.
I think some stores will even create their own bundles (choosing games or accessories to add in to push some inventory)

TheGiantPanda 10-28-2012 12:49 PM

Last year had the best deal for the PS3. Around one or two weeks after Black Friday, Amazon was selling the Harry Potter bundle for $250 + $50 credit. However, for some reason, they gave us 2 $50 credits. So the deal was $250 + $100 credit... I was so happy. I love you Amazon.

Anyways, having both PS3 and Xbox, I would honestly have to say PS3 is by far much more superior. Everything is much more convenient, and it truly is a pure entertainment system. However, I do like the Xbox controller better, but the PS3 controller is lighter and rechargeable which are also a plus. If I could go back in time, I would have never bought the Xbox.

kquig91 10-28-2012 01:56 PM

I'm wanting a deal on the regular slim, stores trying to move them out. Having owned the fat and the slim, I find the SS a step back in material quality. It just doesn't seem worth the price at that point. If not, I'll find a deal on a refurb.

JaTaN 10-29-2012 02:28 PM

Looks like theres a PS3 99034 bundle:
http://www.compsource.com/pn/9903...y-2012-Us/
http://www.costcentral.com/prodde.../11774098/
http://www.macmall.com/p/Sony-Gam...dp.iaafgij
http://www.pcsuperstore.com/produ...99034.html

and a PS3 99133 bundle:

$200-$220 price point is very likely for BF and probably on & off promos til Xmas

PS3 super slim hammer test: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ShaSi8HiCBg -- looks like its stronger than people think lol

wantnano 10-29-2012 08:27 PM

i just need a console to play cod and some other games

360 seems like a rip off since it cost $200 for 4gb, nonchargeable controller, and no free online..

so you basically need to spend $200 + $30(controller battery kit) + $50(xbox live) + $80 for a hard drive = $350 = the current $250 ps3 ???

where am i going wrong?

The 360 does cost more in the long run, but its a personal choice on which one you like better -- I've had both and prefer playing games on the 360 and using the PS3 mainly for blurays and watching videos over network

The 4GB Xbox is $200 retail, but it'll probably go for $100-$150 around BF and Xmas. If you need a hard drive then you can go for the 250GB bundle -- its selling for $250 right now, but it'll probably be $200 around BF and Xmas or you can create your own hard drive if you're decent with computers (I used a Western Digital 250GB laptop drive model WD2500BEVT to make my own 360 drive, bought a cheap xbox hard drive case from eBay to put it in -- google "create xbox 360 hard drive")

The play and charge kit is $16 shipped right now, but you'll probably find it a little cheaper in the coming weeks
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Pro...6874103188
http://www.ebay.com/itm/290792942672

Xbox Live you can get 1 yr for $35 -- comes on sale every few weeks on eBay from Buy.com http://slickdeals.net/f/5375542-Xbox-360-Live-12-Month-Gold-Membership-Subscription-35-Free-Shipping-eBay-Daily-Deal or you can wait til BF to buy it (I think last year Best Buy had 3 month codes for $7-8 which made 12 months worth $28-32)

Most games are available on both PS3 & 360, but PS3 does have some exclusive games and so does the 360 so you'll need to decide on which games you care about and which ones you dont

Overall the PS3 is a better bang for your buck and it'll definitely be cheaper in the long run since playing games online is free

RHCCapri 10-29-2012 10:44 PM

The $199 PS3 Holiday Bundles from last year will most likely be repeated in 2012. B&N canceled my 320 Uncharted bundle, but I did get an extra OEM wireless controller out of Radio Shack due to a misprint in their 2011 BF ad.

Looking for a new PS3 as well. Got the YLOD with my fat one :(

Really dont like the super slim though. The blu-ray loading tray is an awful idea

RIP ps3!

I am sure that there have been times that I have felt worse, but seeing that really hurt my heart!
Any chance you were playing MW3 when your system gave up the ghost?

I got the second ps3 on an add that was printed incorrectly from HHGREG (price matched to Walmart) for $199 and I was tickled. Never really played many BC games so I really didn't miss that feature much other than for playing BUZZ! (I liked the ps2 version of that game better)-

The *new* ps3 is quiet and takes up less real estate in the near the TV. I still have the FAT one with dreams of fixing it but in a year + it just hasn't happened.
I seriously think that by the time I pay for shipping and the fix it fee (and probably won't get back MY fat ps3, I doubt that it will ever get fixed unless a better youtube video comes out.
*sigh*

Anywhoo, you won't be unhappy with the new one if you find a good deal on BF, go for it!

That sucks -- the top disc loading does look cheap and stupid compared to front disc loading, but oh well. The super slim bundles will most likely be around $200-$220 during BF so its not bad at all (you'll get over the top disc loading after a few weeks, hopefully lol)

Bought my phat PS3 4 yrs ago and its worked great ever since (I liked the glossy look and the system felt nice and solid), but I didnt want to take the risk of it running into problems within the next year or two so I decided to trade it in at Gamestop when they started the double trade in credit earlier this month. They gave me $180 store credit which wasnt bad at all -- also traded in my phat 360 during the promo and I got $110 for that. Decided to hold on to the trade credit to buy both systems again during BF -- I'll have to pay a little out of pocket, but at least I'll end up with new consoles that are under mfr warranty

SONY has stopped producing the slims, so once stores sell out of them, that's it. If you want a new slim, you should get it as soon as possible.

I would jump on that. Now all that's left to see is what games are bundled.

A couple of things -

Lower price newly released consoles, drops the price on refurbished models.

$199 ($200) is fair price but the reality is the thing is six years old with the pending release of information about its successor. We didn't create Sony's fiscal problems, its not up to us to solve them by giving you less (lost of slot loading drive and cheaper feeling case), marginal increase in hard drive space and $20 price increase.

This point in the PS2's life cycle the price was $179. About six months later, it dropped to $149.

If Sony allows retailers to drop the price below $199 for the super slim no pack-in game for example, I am not sure if its worth it. I can still get a backward-compatible first gen PS3 for about $200 (40GB). I have a 802.11n (300Mbs) 4 Port Bridge so I really don't need WiFi anyway.

Refurbished doesn't bother me, it all depends on if they fixed the problems correctly. I had a refurbished Sirius/XM Pioneer box that drop connection to the SAT. Turns out it always had this problem because it was a cold solder issue on the PCB. I was sent another refurbished unit that works perfectly until I sold the car.

thelostkin 11-01-2012 06:21 PM

im looking to buy another ps3 so hopefully they will have a price drop for the 500gb super slim :D

I think this is a pretty good deal. The past couple of years, these bundles have been at $200 but the games haven't been the greatest. I've played all 3 Uncharted games and thoroughly enjoyed each one. I've only dabbled into Infamous but just couldn't get into it as much, probably since you don't really "shoot" anything.

I'm not saying this will be the best bundle, as there are still more to come, but this is a good start.

you put it aptly..this is a good start..i do think however that we may see one for $199..in any case this is significant enough to wait until BF so I'm happy

CrankyBastard 11-05-2012 03:57 PM

I have what is probably a loaded question (but my intention is not to start any flame wars).

I play driving games, mostly. But I dropped out of console gaming in the PS/GT2 days. I wouldn't mind picking it back up, and again, it will mostly be for driving games, casually.

The impression I get from reading reviews is that GT5 took way too long to develop (no surprise there), and turned out to be a lukewarm game.

Meanwhile, MS created their own franchise, Forza, with a developer who actually releases games on schedule. Its physics are perhaps a bit behind, but people say it's more "fun" to play and drive, as opposed to the car worship of GT5.

DLC is a new concept to me, and while I dislike it, I understand it's part of the modern business model. On that count, I see there is a GT5 Ultimate Edition which apparently includes most everything, but nothing really on the Forza side.

In trying to decide between the two sides, I already have a BD player, so that's not a benefit for the PS3. Having to pay for the online network is a negative for the XBox, but I don't see myself doing a lot of it either, though, never say never. I also understand that the XB has very limited compatibility with wheels, should I decide to get one (again, unlikely, but never say never).

The '12 XB Holiday Bundle includes a limited version of Forza 4, which is the target for now, unless I can find one of the older bundles that had the full version, and also included a controller.

I don't see anything similar for the PS3, so I'd likely have to buy GT5 separately. But I will want the full version of Forza 4, so I'd probably have to acquire that somehow as well (any tips on that strategy? I know nothing of how to play the the used/new market for games)

Outside of those two heavyweights, are there any other driving games I should consider that may sway the decision?

Any thoughts? I have no allegiances.

I much preferred Forza to Gran Turismo, but you will need Live Gold to make the most out of Forza. Unless you don't care about using the auction house, storefront or multiplayer. Forza (360 in general) is also really lacking racing wheels/shifter/pedal options unless you throw down for a Fanatec. With GT (PS3) you can use the more affordable Logitech wheels.

The thing I liked most about Forza is designing decals for your car and selling them. I can safely say I spent as much time designing things as playing the game. But I couldn't justify having a subscription to play one game and sold my 360. Also consider Forza 3 Ultimate Edition, it contains a lot of DLC. You could import your data over to Forza 4 down the road when they release a DLC bundle. I honestly didn't play Gran Turismo for longer than an hour, so I don't have much to say about it.

It really comes down to which system has the exclusives you want.

Even though I love GT, I have to go with Xbox 360.

1. GT5 was step down in the series.
2. 360 has Forza 4 (if you like realistic simulator track racing) and Forza Horizon (semi realistic open world).

Any other good racing game is available on PS3 and 360 though. My recommendation? Burnout Revenge and Paradise and Need for Speed: Most Wanted and Hot Pursuit. All great games made by Criterion.

doltran 11-05-2012 07:05 PM

So the holiday bundle this year retails for $269, and don't they usually knock off $100 or so, probably less this year since I think it's normally $299.

So Radio Shacks deal is $269 - $50 sale discount - 4x$10 emailed coupons you get back = $179

But the $10 emailed Qs can only be used 1 at a time, not on clearance items, and it says there's other restrictions not listed in the ad.

Are those three features entirely disabled without a Gold subscription? And does the game itself seem crippled without the multiplayer element? I guess as long as I can buy additional cars, I'll be ok. Don't really care about racing strangers, trades and such.

But yeah, I think I'll have to see if I can rent each system and see whether Forza 4 or GT5 is more to my liking.

One of the Target threads mentions that there will be a PS3 bundle with NFS:MW. Curious to see what the pricing will be. I dig the open world games (was a big fan of the Carmageddon series).

Thanks to both.

Yes, anything that requires online in any game (afaik) requires Live Gold. Not having access doesn't cripple the game if you only care about single player, but it's definitely a better experience with access to the auction house/storefront. Forza does have some fun modes like virus tag and soccer as far as multiplayer goes. You can also buy cars outside of the auction house from the garage in game with credits you earn while playing, the cars do cost a bit more however.

I believe you get a 48hr Live Gold trial when you buy a 360 and there are typically $1/month, $10/3month deals on the dashboard every month. Just remember that if you signup for those offers, auto-renew is on by default and it'll start to charge you $8 a month if you don't cancel.

was debating whether to trade in my 60gb FAT. gamestop is running a promo for powerup members. assuming they take it, $125 guaranteed for any console + extra $75 credit if the trade is put towards the 500gb AC3 bundle.
dont have a need for the custom firmware or ps2 games. think id rather have the noise & space saving at this point.
anyone happen to try this deal?

killak 11-07-2012 09:37 AM

So for $235 at best buy you could have a PS3, 2 controllers and 6 games? that isn't too bad...

Personally I have played Forza 2, 3, 4 and now Horizon and by far I have had the most enjoyable time. I cut my teeth on GT3 and GT4 but GT5 I believe was victim of them waiting so flipping long to release it. Online I don't use to much as in racing but the auction, store and also comparing lap times are always an added benefit. However, you can find year long memberships for 30 to 34 bucks here on slickdeals.

Forza 4 especially with the TopGear integration in my opinion creates an awesome racing game. What exactly is this version they are shipping for BF, I haven't heard of it.

Hi Guys,

Sorry I'm pretty new to consoles (PC gamer since forever). I keep hearing a lot of negativity of the new super slim over the old slim, but it seems to be more of bias than factual data. Could someone please clarify for me? TIA

Most of the complaints are about the higher price (before it was $250 & $300, now its $270 & $300) and cheaper parts that they're using -- since its cheaper for Sony to make the new super slim, Sony should've lowered the MSRP, not raise it. Thats not a problem if you buy during black friday since most retailers will have it for $200-220 and I'm sure there will be other deals on the console until Xmas

The other complaint is the sliding disc tray and how cheap it looks, but its not that bad and overall the console is stronger than it looks: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ShaSi8HiCBg

If you want a PS3 then dont be afraid to buy the new one as long as you can find a good deal on it (not worth it at full MSRP) -- I traded in my old phat PS3 and my old phat 360 to Gamestop a month ago and waiting til BF to buy a new super slim PS3 & a new slim 360

ricepicker06 11-07-2012 03:27 PM

the new ac game will be for 35 buck this black friday

Still hoping for a deal on the 500gb ps3... :-/

Live4Night 11-07-2012 03:47 PM

Are there going to be any deals for the slim one? seems like all the ones so far are super slim.

Figured theyd try to get the slims ones out of shelves by lowering the price even more.

Sony said they wont lower MSRP on the old slim -- people who dont want the new super slim will grab the old slim while they can

The $250 160gb slim will most likely sell out easily by the end of the year due to its price, but I think the $300 320gb slims (regular/MW3/UC3 bundles) will be harder for retailers to sell so most likely those will eventually go on sale for $250 in a few months or retailers will have to throw in free items to get rid of them

Anthony Thomas 11-08-2012 01:00 AM

$200 deals for pack-in games I don't want and likely GS won't give me value for them since they are greatest hits titles. I rather have the core and get a $50 GC so I can get the games I want. Not much need for a second controller, I haven't had a 2nd player in YEARS in-fact not since my original PS1.

Looking forward to more mature online gaming and I don't mean more mature players, but a more robust network to play others.

Will likely get an older slim or a older fat backward compatible from GS, disappointed but it is what it is.

Live4Night 11-08-2012 04:43 AM

Looks like Walmart has the same bundle as Best Buy for same price ($200). Cmon Target! Can we got $150? $175?:woot:

With sony setting the release date for the ps4 for nov 2013 we woun't see any ps3's below $200 this year. :(

Exactly my thoughts, I believed this year's BF we would've seen a bunch of $150 PS3 deals, and was just waiting to choose which one fit me the best.

Don't get it, how Sony think they can get away pricing their PS3's at $270 while the Wii U is $299.

I hope Target and Amazon deliver.

Okay guys, I have a decision to make and I could use some knowledgeable help. I thought this would be the best place to post it since if I just go to a regular ps3 forum, many people will not be as aware of the kinds of deals we are currently going to be seeing.

I have been out of the loop on gaming for about 3 years or so now. I used to have the160 GB original model ps3, but it was stolen out of my apartment by a crooked maintenance man who actually replaced it with a broken identical unit (with a different serial number). Anyway, I my life got very busy shortly thereafter and I never replaced it (and I gave the broken one away).

Now, however, I have decided to get another one, and have been looking around and doing research on all of the newer models. I have already decided that I do NOT want one of the super slims, and honestly, I am trying to figure out why I should want one of the slims even. I had absolutely no problems with my old fat one, and actually prefer the look of the sleek glossy plastic to the slim. I don't remember it being loud at all, so the quieter operation doesn't seem like that big of a deal to me. Also, I heard they fixed the issue with the faulty thermal compound which was causing overheating issues in the older models, so I wouldn't think that would be much of a problem in the 160s.

Therefore, I have been trying to decide which way to go with my purchase. I could buy a slim before they all sell out at Amazon or wherever (I strongly prefer online retailers whenever possible), or I could try to get a deal on a refurbished 160 GB fat model. Being away from this for so long and not being aware of new developments/problems with specific models, etc., I am really struggling with what would be the best course of action here. Any information or advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

havok22 11-08-2012 10:45 AM

Sounds to me like you've already made your decision. Just get a fat cuz at the end of the day that's the one you seem to have your heart set on.

Yeah, I guess I'm leaning that way . . . but if there is some reason I shouldn't, I would like to know. Is the slim better in some way I am not aware of?

Also, does anyone know the best place to get a refurbished fat? I don't really know much about it. They are refurbished by Sony themselves, right?

KinKin 11-08-2012 11:09 AM

I'm no PS3 expert but I'm perfectly happy with my first ps3 purchase from last BF.

Anyway, I think you already answer your own question, go and try to get a deal on a refurbished 160 GB fat model.

Also, is there something wrong with the super slim ps3? I personally prefer the super slim over the slim, one of the biggest selling point (to me) is the manual sliding door. I think is better because is one less thing to worry about breaking. Just imagine the tray breaks on the older PS3? Honestly the cheaper mechanism is probably more reliable then the previous slot loading one since there are no moving mechanical parts.

Another thing is since you hold out for this long, why not, hold out for another year when PS4 comes out next year? Have you thought about that?

Good Luck!

I'm not sure the PS4 will come next year. Usually there's a year and a half or so between announcement and availability.

Thanks! About the super slim, I'm obviously no expert on these things either or else I wouldn't be asking these questions, but I have read it is made with cheaper parts. Even elsewhere in this thread people were talking about how it costs less for Sony to produce. I just have a big problem with the overall trend of mass producing cheap items with less and less attention to quality so they have a shorter lifespan and need to be replaced sooner, and from what I have read of the super slim, it just gave me that feeling.

Actually I'm pretty serious about avoiding that sort of thing. It's to the point where I will spend twice as much money for a Rosle garlic press ($80) on ebay in order to get one that was actually made in Germany after the company started outsourcing production to China. I guess getting the best quality items possible is kind of an obsession for me.

So that's my personal prejudice about the super slim, and possibly the slim as well (though that is one of the things I wanted to find out here).

Now if I could just find a deal on a refurb fat model!

About waiting for next year, though, not much of a chance of that. I've got myself set on one now.

wantnano 11-08-2012 11:39 AM

$200 pricing at multiple retailers during BF is hard to beat for the new super slim and it has a 1yr new console warranty

Used/refurbished systems are a hit or miss so why risk spending $150-200 on those with little or no warranty. Most refurb consoles only have 30-90 day warranty, but you'll have to pay extra for longer warranty (if you want to buy one then check Gamestop or eBay or google "refurbished playstation 3"). If you buy used one on Craigslist/eBay then theres no warranty -- I wouldn't want to risk buying a used one, but thats just me

Oh, I agree, I would be way too nervous to buy a used one.

One more question if anyone can tell me. Is new downloadable content such as thishttp://technology.gather.com/viewArticle.action?articleId=281474981745043
[gather.com] accessible on the old fat model?

calvin_nr 11-08-2012 01:40 PM

Please dont buy used. As of now Best buy, Radio Shack and Walmart have the awesome super slim combo pack BF deal for $200. Just buy that this BF. I very happy with my purchase last BF.

Actual usage for all PS3's is the same -- they all play blu rays/DVDs/PS3 games, they all can go online and download content from PS Network (as long as the console wasnt banned for hacking/modding), they all can get the latest dashboard/system update

The only difference was with the PS3's when they first came out -- those early PS3's were also able to play PS2 games (if you look at fat consoles on eBay, some will say "backwards compatible" which is what they're taking about). Sony stopped making those BC PS3's after the first ~2 yrs, but you don't have to worry about that (it doesn't sound like you care about PS2 games lol)

mysteryxxxxx 11-08-2012 02:36 PM

With the prices how they are the word thing you can do is buy used. Pointless.

Thanks. I actually was just about to buy a factory refurbished one on Amazon for $160, and someone bought it out from under me while it was in my cart. Now I can't find one anywhere at any price (except the Gamestop refurb ones, which actually are the same as used). I'm really bummed.

Thanks for the info though. And no I don't care about ps2 games, but it's good to know anyway.

I believe you get a 48hr Live Gold trial when you buy a 360 and there are typically $1/month, $10/3month deals on the dashboard every month. Just remember that if you signup for those offers, auto-renew is on by default and it'll start to charge you $8 a month if you don't cancel.

Duly noted. I think I'll be OK if the single player isn't compromised (and hey, the opponent AI is better than GT's, right? Not a high bar there, LOL). I wasn't that much into collecting zillions of cars even when there were a fraction as many in GT1, so that's not a big concern.

I have seen fleeting deals for XBL subscriptions, so that's a possibility. But what happens if there are lapses? Do downloadable elements need an active sub to be useable, or is access to multiplayer/cloud stuff just cut off?

Online I don't use to much as in racing but the auction, store and also comparing lap times are always an added benefit....

Forza 4 especially with the TopGear integration in my opinion creates an awesome racing game. What exactly is this version they are shipping for BF, I haven't heard of it.

This will date me, but I bought a PS1 specifically to play GT1 (which broke ground with its physics), and GT2 (had to order the infamous bug fix disc). My impression is that the game play didn't really get much better than that in subsequent versions, just prettier, and more cars/tracks.

For, me, it's the same situation now, only with other new stuff to consider, like DLC and online play.

Too bad MS didn't include the full version of Forza 4 with the new holiday bundle, or it would be a slam dunk. I'd have to factor in the cost of a full copy, and either let the Essentials copy collect dust, or try to get rid of it somehow for minimal value. Shoulda jumped on the limited ed Racing bundle with the wheel when I had the chance.

Do have to admit the upcoming BF PS3 deals look to be better value, even with the added cost of GT5 XL added on.

The Super Slim's sliding door is a cost concession, but is less complicated than a tray or slot loading drive. But in terms of the electronics, an even further refined design, with fewer components can only be a benefit, even if it is also cheaper. And AFAIK, there's no less capability, as with the PS backward compatibility being removed, though there may be other game compatibility issues. Have any been noted?

To the people who want a regular slim console then Walmart has:
160GB Slim PS3 + 2nd DS3 controller + 1 game for $259
http://www.walmart.com/ip/PS3-Ult...e/20655836

Controller is worth $35 at BF pricing so console + game is $224 which isn't that bad

me either and i think sony is having trouble not being the only kid on the block.

the ps3 has that weird 7 core processor that makes it harder to port over games to it, and have them compare to anything that was made native for the ps3 and attempt to compare to something like God of War or Uncharted, or Killzone.

In saying that, i still dont think the Ps3's hardware is totally out tapped yet, though appears to be when its being compared to pc/xbox games that are ported to it.

I managed to snag an old fat model from Amazon warehouse deals for $215. Not much of a slick deal maybe, but I got what I wanted, which was not as easy as I thought it would be. Apparently there is a significant subculture of people like me who prefer the fats and pay crazy prices for them on Ebay.

Anyway, I wanted to ask if anyone had ever bought a console from Amazon warehouse. I'm hoping it will basically be a new one that someone returned within the 30 day refund period. Any idea?

Newb question please folks.

Is that Best Buy $199 deal one of those things where you have to line up before the doors open at B&M store on BF, or do you think I might have a shot at finding one similarly priced online, OR without being trampled by other people?

I just don't have the right temperament for 'doorbusters' and I need one for xmas list. :)

Thanks.

Same here, my old 20GB BC PS3 started shutting down a while ago with RLOD, I've been waiting to have time to try to fix it, but proper info on fixing it seems hard to find...

So instead I've been waiting for a good deal on the slim, which I don't really like either since I much prefer both the look & BC of the original fat model, but what can you do, definitely don't want some old used/refurb that's gonna die in x months...

Instead we get deals on the super slim, which I dislike even more  and yes, I have no idea what they were thinking with the new top-loading drive :shake:

Sorry I'm pretty new to consoles (PC gamer since forever). I keep hearing a lot of negativity of the new super slim over the old slim, but it seems to be more of bias than factual data. Could someone please clarify for me? TIA

Personally my main problem with the super slim isn't even that it subjectively to me looks even uglier than the slim, but the stupid top-loading blu-ray drive mechanism, which is far more likely to collect dust because of the open top-loading design = higher chance of early failure and even Sony has acknowledged that it's noisier because there's nothing shielding the noise coming from the drive but that tiny piece of plastic cover. Incredibly moronic design...

Also, does anyone know the best place to get a refurbished fat? I don't really know much about it. They are refurbished by Sony themselves, right?

The benefit with the slim compared to the old fat models are 1) lower power consumption (basically half the energy cost of usage) 2) less noisy and 3) smaller footprint.. All good reasons, too bad they couldn't also make it A) look as nice as the old fat models and B) include BC, then I would've bought a new one a long time ago...

I think is better because is one less thing to worry about breaking. Just imagine the tray breaks on the older PS3? Honestly the cheaper mechanism is probably more reliable then the previous slot loading one since there are no moving mechanical parts.

Well, I've never had an optical drive fail in over 20 years of using computers/consoles, but on the other side that top-open sliding door will make it really easy for dust to gather inside the drive and getting into the really dust-sensitive laser, which definitely increases the chance of drive failure, not even considering the noise & storage issue, since you can't place the super slim anywhere where you can't easily access the top, so you have a lot less placement options than with the old front-loading design...

Is there a quick and easy way of differentiating which package is the slim and which one is the super slim without contacting the retailer? I think its based on storage capacity 160/320 vs 250/500. Is that correct?

I've had xbox.. the online features are very nice however I feel dirty paying to play online. The console is cheaper than the ps3 but way more expensive in the long run. Microsoft forces you to use their hard drives, use their equipment for the headset, pay for online play. With the ps3, you can use any USB headset lying around.

Personally, I think the ps3 has way better exclusives. Drakes Uncharted and God of war alone are better than Halo.

My brother has a ps3, however I don't get to play it often. I bought a 360, thinking it would be stupid to have 2 ps3's in one household. I regretted my purchase (not that there was anything wrong with it, I just didn't want to pay all that money and keep getting nickle and dimed after I thought I had gotten a good deal on it). I sold the 360 and am now looking to get a ps3 of my own.

Last year Amazon price matched all the B&M retailers on the LBP Bundle with a Lightning deal. I imagine they will do the same thing this year.

DeweyCox 11-14-2012 08:02 AM

Think my release-day PS3 just went bye-bye. Is it stupid to pay more for the slim than the super-slim? I like the design of the slim and disc-loading much more than the super-slim, but not sure that outweighs the cost/availability, esp. with BF coming up.

iJesu 11-14-2012 08:23 AM

I bought a ps3 from amazon last year with two games little big planet 2 and rachet all4 one. I selle the little big planet2 and play the rachet it was fun but if you play it with 3 more friends. If amazon put a gift card with the ps3 i will buy it again.

RugerRedhawk 11-14-2012 02:29 PM

The slims are prone to the YLOD issue. Not certain yet whether the super slims are subject to the YLOD issue since they are so new. Makes getting a super slim a no-brainer for me.

I play my slim for hours at a time without problems. Just stand it up, they get hot when lying flat.

ajh52 11-15-2012 08:18 AM

I recently sold my Xbox 360 due to lack of interest in the exclusives (not a huge shooter fan). Infamous and Uncharted series' are the main the reason I'm switching to PS3, so I'm really looking forward to getting one of these BF Bundles. Hopefully, Newegg carries it, so I can avoid paying tax at Amazon or a B&M store.

Yeah that seems like the obvious choice, didn't realize that it's still a damn good deal even if you just trade the games in or sell them or something.

Definitely not. The first time I used it I had it flat and in less than an hour it was cooking. I can use it for 3-4 hours standing up and it's nowhere near as hot as it was in that 30-60 minutes flat. That's why they make stands for them. I just lean mine against a wall or the TV stand.

Really confused as to why Kmart and Sears don't have any kind of Bundle on PS3 this year. I was so looking forward to buying Sears gift cards at Albertsons (and get $20 in free groceries for every $100 in gift cards I buy) and pairing it with buying a Playstation 3 at either Kmart or Sears. Anyone know why they seem to be the only stores to not have one on sale?

Thanks Soymilkmania for pointing out the Amazon way to order.

I really personally hate the aesthetic of these new versions with the shiny oval grated shape, I was really planning on this until I saw the picture! The regular slims looked so slick I'm keeping my eye out for a deal on that. Such a good deal though, I can probably just push it far back into my cabinet :)

I know the PS3 comes with a wireless controller, but if I'm not mistaken, you can get wired controllers for them, right? I prefer the wired controllers so I don't have to worry about dead batteries, that's one thing I hate about my Wii. Just curious if the wired controllers are the same ones that are used on the PS2? I already have several extra PS2 controllers, so it would be great if they would work.

The wireless controller becomes "wired" when you plug it in to charge. I suggest you get a longer usb to usb mini cable if you rather use it as a "wired" controller as the stock cable is like 2 ft long. Sony doesn't make and wired ps3 controllers, you'll have to go aftermarket prob to get one.

Also I bought a second controller for my ps3 so I always have one controller charged fully when one dies as an alternative to wired controllers.

Good deal. Buy it and sell/trade the two games. You can get $30-$50 for the two games if you sell both. Or could trade them in at Gamestop toward something else.

I already have several extra PS2 controllers, so it would be great if they would work.

There are no batteries to replace. The controller has an internal battery, and a charge lasts a LONG time. I've been known to play for the better part of a day and the battery meter only goes down one bar. Casual play would allow you to use the controller for a week or two without charging. However, if you were to have two controllers, one can charge while you use the other and you'll never have to worry about a dead battery.

Good to know they have a long battery life. Still not a fan of batteries though, especially proprietary rechargeable ones (easily replaceable AA or AAA are better in my opinion).
My playing habits aren't consistent, I might have a day long gaming marathon and then not play again for weeks or months or I might play a few hours a day for a while and then a long break. Either way isn't good for the batteries, either dying during play or dying while in storage and then they are dead when I do want to start playing.
I'd already planned on getting extra controllers for multi-player, even though I'd primarily play single player and as back-up in case one broke.

Proprietary batteries are better in many cases, this being one of them. AAA batteries don't give much power and AAs would make the controller much heavier. The battery really does last a long time and Li Ion batteries hold a charge for a long time. Just remember that Li Ion batteries prefer to be fully or close to fully charged when left in storage for long periods.

itzlinky 11-19-2012 10:12 PM

IDK, my wireless PS3 controllers (I have 3) don't hold too great of a charge anymore. They are probably about 2-3 years old though. After fully charged, they last about 8 hours before it goes down to half-way. After that, it'll die after about 10-12.

If I am going on a long gaming marathon, I just use the extra long wire I got off Monoprice (I think less than $10) for extended gameplay.

el_pobre 11-19-2012 10:21 PM

all my ps3 controllers broke magically but my question is
kmart has the controllers for $39 on BF not a deal but i have 3 coupons $15 off games and game accessories would these coupons work on BF???

Ready2Sale 11-19-2012 11:09 PM

What best games available in BF and which store? ..any suggestion ?

mrredskin 11-20-2012 07:48 AM

gamestop doing a double trade in value on hardware. ps3 80gb (BC) currently at $85, so $170 if value holds thru promo. Wondering if it's worthwhile to trade mine in for the 250gb. i'd gain a brand new system, controller, 170gb of hdd space (very much needed), and tradeable games.

Man I would hate to lose a PS3 with the BC but to be honest a PS2 is so cheap now it's so easy to pick one up to play those PS2 games. I would do it tbh I am debating on doing that with my 160 gig I bought last year.

i never had a ps2 so i have no games to justify the BC. plus, many are being remastered and offered as packs (sly, ratchet, etc...) or even free on ps+.

i think i've made up my mind that if the current TIVs stick, i'll trade in fatty for the 250gb $199 bundle. i like the look of the fatty, but lower energy consumption and a brand new unit, controller, hdd, and games just outweighs the cons

You can buy the battery for around $10-15 on Amazon or ebay. They aren't the Sony battery, Sony doesn't sell them they want you to buy a new controller, so they may or may not be as good as the original. Replacing the battery is pretty easy, remove the 5 screws and take the bottom cover off, the battery is right there and just plugs into the circuit board.

Amazon will have a couple of controller + game combo deals on Monday the 26th.

Do you happen to know which game will be included in the combo and at what price?

Scroll down to the bottom to see Monday's deals.

Infamous 1+2
Ratchet and Clank Collection

$49.99 apiece

samijubal 11-21-2012 11:54 AM

I think I'll just go for the 250GB with Infamous + Uncharted bundle for $200. Hopefully the egg will have it for that price today, got a 10% off code from them a couple of weeks back.

PS3s use 2.5" laptop hard drives so it should be the same

PS3 encrypts your data so you'll have to back up your old drive first and then put the old drive into the new PS3 -- new PS3 will ask you to format the drive (you cant just take a drive from one PS3 and put it into another PS3 and keep your data)

Thank you for your quick reply.

It sucks that you can't just switch the hd. My old console died a couple of weeks ago (no video output) and I was hoping that I can keep all my data by just buying a new PS3.

It will likely be before tax and shipping. PS3 and a pack of gum or one of the many blu-rays at $3.99.

Slicktravis 11-21-2012 04:28 PM

So I'm debating on getting the bundle on Amazon tomorrow or just going to Gamestop at midnight. It seems this bundle should be a quit a few places to demand wont be as high as other items. Any idea what my chances are at Gamestop?

Doesnt matter what you buy and it can include tax -- Amex only sees the amount charged to your account so you must have a single $200.00+ charge on your card to get the credit

depends on your area. I'm going to a very rural one and not expecting a big crowd. it's in a Walmart shopping center so lining up at 11 while everyone else is at WM

I work 6am Friday morning, are there any online retailers that will have deals on the ps3 controller and a few games?

GlennN 11-21-2012 05:41 PM

Dumb question, and somewhat off topic, but can you hook a PS3 to a computer monitor rather than a TV? I already have a 360 on one TV, and my daughter has a Wii on the other of the good TV. I have a monitor I wasn't using, and I am thinking of grabbing a PS3 with this bundle deal. Just not sure what I can hook it up to for playing. Thanks!

kainsword 11-21-2012 06:12 PM

First of all, I'd very much like to purchase one of these $200 PS3 Infamous/Uncharted Bundles. But, I'm not able to go out to a brick and mortar store to purchase one, except possibly at a time when they've all sold out.

I know there are online offers to get these same PS3 bundles, but I want to make sure I get one for my niece for Christmas. For example, I know Amazon and Target have their $200 bundles available online, but I think I'm taking a very large gamble if I'm going to try and get in on the $200 PS3 Amazon lightning deal. I want to make sure I have other options to get this bundle. Which retailers, if any, are also making their PS3 bundle made available online?

Toys R' Us? K-Mart? Wal-Mart? BestBuy? Newegg? Any other potential candidates?

In addition, at what time would any of these bundles be available for me to purchase? I want to make sure I'm on the computer and on the website, refreshing a page, before the deal is available, but I don't want to sit there 24 hours, refreshing a page in vain. I know Amazon has published a time of 5:10 PM PST, which is 7:10 PM in CST (Central Standard Time) where I live. Have any other online distributors published a specific time, besides a very ambiguous 'sales date'?

Thanks!

That works, as long as you're getting both video output and sound output to work. For example, if the monitor has HDMI-in and integrated audio/speakers, then you're good to go with just the monitor! However, if your monitor is just HDMI but doesn't have speakers, you may just have to connect some speakers (older ones from a computer are just fine) to hear the audio. If you don't have HDMI, then you may need to get some kind of adapter so you can even view the content.

Why not get a switch box, not sure of the exact name but that's what I have on my TV. It has 4 sets of A/V inputs with 1 output to TV. All I have to do is flip the switch to whichever input device I'm using.

I'd almost bet Best Buy's ad will go live online at midnight tomorrow.
After a recent experience with walmart.com, there's no way in hell I'd trust ordering from them. Basically item showed in stock, ordered, got oos cancellation email, website still showing item in stock, went to the store and found 9 on the shelf. So screw walmart.com.

best buy going live tonight????????? or tommorow?

Anthony Thomas 11-21-2012 07:41 PM

Please confirm

I wanted to buy a used 360 to trade but wanted to make sure I get max value (store credit).

On CAG I see Fat 360's are $45 but I called three different GS and they said they are not sure about double store credit for ANY console like on the ad. One said he flat out didn't know, the other two said its correct and one other said trade-ins only for Wii U consoles.

Help! I wanted to buy a bundle PS3 with the store credit + cash.

I don't think it will be hard to score one of those bundles. I think Sony has saturated the market with them. If you can't get one on BF, I really don't think you'll have a problem with that, you can probably get one on Cyber Monday. They will likely be $200 again between now and Christmas even if you can't get one on BF or CM.

$200 at the egg now also but the standard 30 day return policy kills it for me even though I've got a 10% off coupon code. Guess it's Amazon for me too.

I'm guessing it's a user-account tied code which can't be shared then? I tried looking up Newegg promo codes for PS3 via Google and SlickDeals and found nothing of the sort. What exactly is the 10% off coupon for, for the sake of curiousity? Any one video game category item or something?

It is tied to the account. Good on anything until the end of the month, max $20 discount.

Kinda weird, I was all set to buy a PS3 this week, and now that the day is upon us for the BF specials....now I'm suddenly rethinking it.

AMEX + Xbox just seems too good to pass up. Basically almost free Halo 4 and $50 of Amazon GCs to throw into the mix of the $200 vs $200 bundles.

Am I just late to the party in thinking this?

EDIT: Do what now? I don't even need to buy Halo 4, just rent it and you can view that as the Xbox being $85 cheaper than the PS3 (plus Halo 4 rental fees).

price wise its best... but you can sale the bundles games on ps3 like i did and my cost is down to 170.... plus i dont have to pay for online gaming so it works out for me.

I'm also in for a new PS3 but can't figure the best deal yet since the tax calculation system on bb.com is down.

It is either the Newegg Deal for $199 with no tax for me (NY) or the BB $199 + x% Tax - $20 Amex cashback. Do you think BB has the deal in stores too?

See im torn between Newegg with no tax or brave Toys R Us tonight for the extra controller. The only reason this is even a debate is i have a $40 TRU GC i need to get rid of so it would take my price down after tax to $172.. but then again I'd have to brave the lines.

Am i being stupid about this?
