Lenovo is generally considered one of the most reliable, if not THE most reliable, brand.

I'm also curious if anyone has experience with this laptop. I'm usually in the 17"/1080p camp, but the specs and price are fairly attractive. I'm curious what the screen quality is like.

arghhh...I cannot customize the Operating system to be Windows 7 Professional....Anyway of asking them to do that? willing to pay more.

You can buy the Anytime upgrade and do it yourself to go from Home Premium to Professional. $90, I think. Maybe find a place that has a 10% or 20% coupon (staples comes to mind).

The other idea is to try do a Windows 8 Professional upgrade when it comes out. I think you can start with Home Premium 7 and go to Windows 8 Professional for $39.99.

Obviously, since Win 8 isn't out yet, details are subject to change, etc, etc. And of course, you might not want Win 8.

Tax kills it.

pritam83 10-18-2012 05:50 PM

Can't add it into cart. Some problem with lenovo

serpia 10-18-2012 06:10 PM

A real bargain.

iamjamin 10-20-2012 02:21 AM

just a heads up for those who bought it last week at 800$.. i spoke to a sales rep on the phone and requested a price adjustment even after i received my laptop. they said they were processing it and i should see the 50$ refund on my credit soon.

also discover is offering 5% cashback from all online purchases + 5% from their shopdiscover portal for lenovo. im not sure if they stack but if it doesnt, the 5% offsets most of the tax making it ~762$ and if it does stack ~723$. ill find out on my next statement i guess :o

Can you confirm what the reviews say that the graphics card is advertised as a GT650M but it comes with the weaker a 640M LE?

No way. If it says 650M then that's what it has. This isn't some purchase off the back of a truck, it's Lenovo factory... they make the best laptops, period. You're reading a review of the wrong model is all. The Y480 has lots of sub models. Make sure you search for 20938RU not just Y480.

Used to be IBM if that means anything to you. They just sold the division back to the manufacturer or something like that. Quality is the same.

Not a bad deal at all if you're the market for a relatively small gaming notebook. Like all things computer though, there's always going to be something better. Asus is set to announce (and possibly release that day?) their ROG G46 14" gaming notebook around the 23rd.

Ok, thank you. I'm getting this info from the reviews on the same website/model of this laptop and this deal, there are a lot of reviews saying that the video card is incorrect so it scares me a bit. But if you bought this model and it actually comes with the GT650M then I might get it. Thanks!

$1.2k?? Lame :(

Makes this deal seem all the more sweeter. Anyone know how well the Y480 stands up to an hour or so of straight gaming? The Asus ROG notebooks have 2 large vents in the back, one dedicated to the GPU and the other to the CPU and it seems to stand up very well to gaming.

Yeah

2 large vents in back of laptop, with dedicated GPU for all ASUS ROG LAPTOPS are superior. Hell, throw in a extra cooling laptop specifically DESIGNED for it hahahahaha

Just make sure you buy extended warranty as it would be useful ( your laptop goes in RMA 10-15 times = automatically new laptop )

Is it possible to use the discover 5% cashback with the B&N link?

yes. discover is offering 5% off ALL online purchases as part of their rotating categories. but i'm not sure if it stacks on top of their normal shopdiscover %'s since this is the first time ive ever seen this promotion. id call them but... too lazy and its not a deal breaker for me anyway

pick the one with the GT 650m. i'm typing from it right now. there are multiple models but i dont see why anyone wouldnt get the gt 650m y480 as it also comes with a i7-3630qm 2.4ghz vs the i7-3610qm 2.3ghz.. also i just picked up a corsair c4 msata ssd 128gb because apparently my y480 has an empty slot for it so i figured why not as a boot drive

jellysandwich 10-20-2012 05:37 PM

Edit: Nm, you're right.

I guess the price would come down even more in a few weeks. I talked to Lenovo and they are releasing their new models the Y400/Y500 early Novmber. They will have the options of an unltra bay, if any of you used the older ideapads you would know. The ultra bay gives the option of a Dual graphics (SLI) card, fan or extra hard disk space. I have been waiting for these for almost 2 months now. Here are the links to the new models:

Both ROG notebooks I've owned (G73 and G74) have been crap. Flimsy, bulky, dormroom-kewl plastic cases with HORRIBLE airflow.

Lenovo on the other hand makes excellent notebooks which are NOT crap. This line and the Thinkpads in particular are great. I'd recommend them hands down over an ROG.

Anyone want to share an opinion on the Y480 vs. the Acer Timeline Ultra M5-481TG-6814?

Both seem to be highly rated.

The M5 is going to be about half an inch thinner and half a pound lighter, it also lacks an optical drive (a plus or minus depending on your view) It has an I5 and 640m LE (Kepler I believe). The y470 is going to be faster with an I7 and 650m. It really comes down to if you want more portability or performance.

I can't compare build quality as I have never owned an Acer, though I have carried my y470 around in my backpack almost every day for the past year and it has held up very well considering.

Here are links to video card benchmarks:

ikonoklast 10-24-2012 06:22 PM

How's the build quality compared to a Thinkpad T series? The keyboard? I see Lenovo has moved to chicklet type keyboards on all their laptops (why the hell mess with a good thing?!).

That gfx is so damn tempting at $730. I am going to wait or at least try to. Way too many great deals lately.

That is what I figured - performance vs. portability.

I really don't carry a laptop around much, and I have a netbook that goes with me if I am traveling. I will probably pick one of these up.

Just FYI. If you order it from the website @ 749, log onto chase rewards. 4 points for every dollar spent. It comes out cheaper by a few bucks.
