Moviepass discussion thread

EDIT 11/08
This thread is for discussion of moviepass

This post can and should be edited by users like you :)

CANCELLATION POLICY UPDATE! CHECK YOUR EMAILS:

"It has been a very exciting six weeks since we relaunched, and we hope you've been enjoying your MoviePass as much as we've enjoyed creating it! We've received a ton of great customer feedback recently, and we've been taking comments into consideration as we continue to grow and expand. One of the main areas of feedback has been related to our cancellation policy and in an effort to provide a better user experience and a higher level of transparency, we have simplified things for you.

If you decide to cancel MoviePass within your first month of membership, you will be charged a cancellation fee of the difference between your monthly MoviePass rate and the total dollar amount of the movies you saw. If you're paying $30 dollars a month for MoviePass and you saw 5 movies at a cost of $10 each, you would pay a $20 cancellation fee. If your subscription fees are more then the cost of the tickets, you will be credited back the difference.

After your first month of membership, there will be a flat cancellation fee that is based on how long you have been a subscriber. The breakdown is as follows:

If account is cancelled within months 2 or 3, cancellation fees are $75
If account is cancelled within months 4, 5 or 6, cancellation fees are $60
If account is cancelled within months 7, 8 or 9, cancellation fees are $40
If account is cancelled within months 10 or 11, cancellation fees are $20

After your year long commitment, you will be able to cancel your MoviePass account at any time without cancellation fees.

We have a lot of things in store for MoviePass and your feedback has been invaluable. Our full terms and conditions may be viewed here; if you have any questions or feedback about this policy, or anything else MoviePass related, please reach out to our MoviePass Concierge via email at support@moviepass.com, live chat, or phone at (877) 646-2892."

I wondered the same thing...

Someone didn't like where that was going!

sandler743 10-18-2012 02:27 PM

Equally curious

MotorolaX 10-18-2012 02:28 PM

I am curious as well, it was nice to hear from other users their input on the program.

I am assuming thread got deleted either from begging for invites or 19.99 trick

Parachute07 10-18-2012 02:36 PM

+1 -- The only thing I dislike about this site is the way threads are sometimes deleted for no apparent reason with no explanation. There was a lot of valuable discourse in there -- I think that it is *especially* important to keep hearing about peoples' experiences over the next couple of weeks as everyone's month "trial" starts. And there was lots of good information throughout the thread. Can whichever mod deleted it please let us know why -- and at the very least, consider moving it to DealTalk? Truth be told, I don't know why it would be removed from Hot Deals since it's still a hot deal for a lot of people........but I don't really care where it goes as long as it exists for a while. I mean, you can search and find plenty of threads that are a year old or more -- I think keeping this one around for a month seems like the right idea.

Edit: In fact, a quick search reveals threads about MoviePass from December and JUNE of 2011 that are still here. Why was this one deleted?

Billymadison51 10-18-2012 02:45 PM

I agree - I don't get why it was deleted. It was bookmarked for me as I feel like a moviepass guinea pig. Lots of insightful stuff too.

19.99

barbcole 10-18-2012 02:51 PM

If nothing else, it would have been a nice thread to be able to post in should some of those scary terms come back to haunt those of use that subscribed sometime over the next year, keep track if more theaters start disappearing without explanation, etc.

I assume you're saying because of the invites getting swapped back and forth?

b1rdman 10-18-2012 02:53 PM

Probably to stop the massive trainwreck of a request thread it became. Also, to stop the company from finding out that they were about to be screwed royally.

edit: removed per OP's request. PM me if you need the info for yourself

Amen. Exactly. It's a hot deal that's still developing -- and I'd like to be able to continue to see how it develops since most of us have either no experience with this company or very little -- so at least the thread gives a way for people to find each other and communicate about what is happening. I mean, I do want to know if theaters continue to get deleted and/or if people's price gets jacked up after the first 30 days. That will help some people know whether or not they need to cancel after 30 days.

Nevertheless, the thread was informative and it was helpful that recent subscribers were sharing their experiences about the Moviepass service since it's a new start-up that is still in "beta."

Great quote. And thanks for copying that email. I'm saving the content for future reference.

eliter1 10-18-2012 03:07 PM

I was waiting for someone to come in the old thread and tell people to stop trying to get the $20 invites but I guess they weren't going to stop...

Mr.Ritz 10-18-2012 03:08 PM

The 19.99 invite shit was getting annoying but I would like the thread back

Rockalittle 10-18-2012 03:12 PM

I was just looking for an answer. Lets not post anything here that gets this deleted before we find out (if we ever do) what happened.

One time, when the same type of thing happened, I posted the same type of message you did in the OP in the "tech support" forum and someone restored it in DealTalk for me. I guess that thread got deleted for some sort of referral links -- but those were posted directly in the thread, not by PM. Anyway -- a mod replied quite fast when I posted in that forum.

Rockalittle 10-18-2012 03:19 PM

Well since I already asked here and I PM'd a mod (no response yet) I don't want to start another thread. Maybe you can ask in tech support if you think it's worth it?

UnimatrixZero 10-18-2012 03:26 PM

Yes, it would be nice for Mods to alert everyone in the thread why it is being locked and will be deleted. Otherwise, people won't know what was done wrong and that same behavior is likely to continue.

Apparently, even this thread is not permited.

Acceptable Use Policy (Rules)

Rockalittle 10-18-2012 03:27 PM

I think I figured it out. Feeling kind of dumb for not realizing it right away.

It was probably deleted because referrals aren't allowed on slick deals. I wondered about it when I first saw the deal but I figured it was being allowed because it was the only way into the beta.
But you could actually get into the beta program by simply requesting the invite from moviepass directly.
If this is the case I hope a mod will consider reopening the first post of the thread and then locking it. It really is a good deal.
just my .02
Thanks all and good luck

EDIT*
@unimatrixzero good point. luckily it wasn't my thread so I am probably ok. I'm sure they'll let me know if I'm not.

I agree, Ive been trying to get movie pass for longest time.

MotorolaX 10-18-2012 03:32 PM

Moviepass responded to my message about details on the delete of theater, and even took into consideration my suggestion of an email alert whenever a theater within proximity of you gets removed or added. It would really get rid of the suprise factor.

Hi xxxxx,

Incompatibility can be due to several different reasons. It is usually due to a theater not accepting Discover or even credit cards in general. In the case of the Cobb CineBistro, it appears that the theater is a dine-in theater, which the service does not support at this time. MoviePass currently is for standard 2D movies only.

Your idea for an alert system is good one - we've made note of it, and hopefully that will be available in the future as we improve the service! We really appreciate your feedback.

Please let me know if there is anything else I can do for you.

UnimatrixZero 10-18-2012 03:34 PM

That sounds plausible that people need to request invites from Moviepass directly, rather than get referrals through the thread.

UnimatrixZero 10-18-2012 03:38 PM

In the Los Angeles area, Moviepass has most all theaters accepted including the smaller independent theaters that show foreign movies and/or classic movies. The only one that I see is not listed is Arclight Theaters, which also is more of a premium theater with reserved seating, best seats/screen/projectors, a restaurant, and cocktail bar.

Cinebistro had the best projectors as well, whenever I went there I made sure to show up right before movie started otherwise the waiters give you dirty looks.

Grover8 10-18-2012 04:25 PM

I'm glad the thread got deleted. Half of it was people asking for the $19.99 invite. But the other was informative and i guess i'll just deal with them directly because it's not that complicated for a thread.

eliter1 10-18-2012 04:31 PM

I finally got through on the phone with Moviepass but they said billing would contact me... In my information it says I am on the $35 plan but I signed up for the $30 plan. I think you can only check this AFTER you get your card so keep an eye to make sure no one gets over billed.

phnguyen87 10-18-2012 05:30 PM

My roommate got bill 19.99 and I got bill 29.99 ><

Did you both sign up for the 19.9---wait, never mind, I don't think we should say that anymore. I have a feeling moviepass saw this thread and asked the slickdeals moderators to take it down. Official word from them was that the promotion ended. People were still trying even though the promotion was over and done. That's my theory anyway.

That thread was 60 pages long and lots of info..cannot believe it poof went away.

Go see Argo! What a great film.

It has nothing to do with MoviePass being complicated and EVERYTHING to do with it being a Beta program. It's helpful to have a thread to see what everyone's experience is. Motorola already had a theater near him eliminated -- which might be reasonable due to the style of theater, but it might also be a scary sign of what is to come. It was helpful to hear that people were having more success checking in with Android after hitting up their navigation app. It would be VERY helpful to know if MoviePass starts jacking up rates on people at some point. So again -- nothing to do with it being complicated.

Second, I have read people say that tossing around referral links are against the rules -- but I don't really know why. It doesn't hurt anybody....and it isn't hard to scroll past the comments you don't care about. I do it all the time on various comments on various deals all day long. I don't suggest each type of comment that I don't care about be eliminated.

You can check it before you get your card -- just go to the mobile site -- m.moviepass.com -- on your cell phone. There is a button on the screen with like 3 lines -- click that and then click "my information". Again, do this on your phone -- it will show your plan price there.

Vivix729 10-18-2012 05:55 PM

Still waiting to receive my card in the mail.

I originally had the 29.99 plan, and then re-signed up for 19.99 and canceled the original subscription. Got my refund and all, but I'm curious...how am I going to know which card is actually the one for 19.99, if I still end up getting two cards in the mail? Haha.

Ah, so u think the thread was taken down because of a slickdeals policy against referrals...not because of a moviepass request. Interesting.

I just want add that for people interested in midnight showings like 12:01am for say paranormal activity 4 , your purchase will count as a movie purchased today Thursday and not for tomorrow Friday, even though 12:01 am is officially Friday.

For those who signed up at 19.99 are they honoring that or jacking up prices based on your zipcode? And if your on 19.99 are they putting enough on the card to purchase the ticket?

gonepostl 10-18-2012 06:32 PM

Wait, somebody clear something up for me. Slickdeals was founded by exploiting deals! Who cares if people were trying to get the 19.99 when there were deals for battlefield 3 where you bought a russian version of a game like battlefield 3 by using a proxy and exploiting origins pricing method?!?!?!?!

Yeah, I love SD for a lot of reasons -- it's a great place overall with an incredibly active community of deal-hunters -- but this is exactly what I don't like about people "policing" Internet forums -- it leads to inconsistent and subjective enforcement of whatever arbitrary "rules" someone decided to set up. Things that are OK one time are not OK another time. I know a lot of people disagree with me -- but I think it's silly to even have moderators on an Internet forum. That's not an opinion that is unique to slickdeals. And it doesn't sprout from a lack of respect for authority -- I come from a family full of police offers and justice system workers. And before someone lectures me about how important and under-appreciated moderators are, let me say that I get the idea -- I just think it's ridiculous to give someone an Internet-badge and have them police the highway to pull over the speeders. Leave that to the non-virtual world is what my opinion is. So I'm with ya on that.

And I understand those who were talking down on those who got a better deal on this as though they were "cheating the system". You're right -- sort of. But on the other hand, I won't cry myself to sleep if a company that solely exists online builds a crappy website and, in their hurry to get the product to market, leaves a gaping loophole for everyone to get a price that they meant for some select few. And don't argue that the cheapest price was based on market -- if that were the case, they would CLEARLY be marketing their service as "Starting at $XX.XX" with $XX.XX being the cheapest price in the cheapest market in the country. If they created a website that allowed you to sign up with a shipping and billing address that allowed you to get the service for $X, then either A) They can sell the service for $X or B) They need to seriously reconsider their career choice -- because a web-based business isn't for them. So before anyone cries themselves to sleep over how the company got cheated out of ten bucks a month, let's all stop and consider the fact that they have a web-based business. Their entire concept is based on their web platform. If it was really released -- even in this beta form -- in a way that allowed people to so rampantly take advantage of it, they were never going to make it in the real world post-beta. More realistically, I'm thinking that they created the ability to sign up at that price-point intentionally -- planning to build up some online chatter -- just as they did.

Maybe they didn't count on the word spreading so fast about the cheap-end plan -- but if they didn't, welcome to the Internet, guys. Stuff spreads fast. Anyone who finds out that anyone is paying less for the same service is going to A) be upset and B) want that price. If, in fact, the lower price was only meant for one or two markets, that was dumb. Those people have friends in larger markets who are going to A) be upset and B) want that price. People in NYC expect to pay more for everything -- but outside of NY and LA, I think most people in most of the US want to pay about the same price for most things (gas and cigarettes included -- though the difference seems more accepted there, people still lament that they pay more than someone else). If I owned the company, I'd have set a single price that would allow me to be profitable nation-wide and I would have grinned ear-to-ear every time a (more profitable) small-market customer signed up. But, it's not my company. I didn't ask them to charge 5 different prices based on market. I didn't ask them to build a "broken" website that didn't know up from down or left from right or one market from another. But I'll take the lowest price I can get, please and thank you. If I didn't feel that way, I'd be like my friends who pay double what I do for a cell phone contract and triple what I do for everything else by shopping at the mall -- in other words, I wouldn't be on this site. But I am here. I do want the best deal. And I want to be able to discuss it with others. If they really DID contact SD and ask them to remove the thread, I'm triply disappointed that SD complied with the request. This is the Internet, folks. People communicate. If you can't take the heat, get outta the kitchen.

And that brings me to the last part -- as everyone here is saying, we want the ability to continue to discuss this. If someone wants to create a silly rule that bans people from inviting each other so we can all get a better deal and get our first month free, I think that's stupid -- but you can set out that rule and delete the posts from people who violate it and give them a warning. But don't take away our ability to discuss a company in a beta-stage that might be great or might turn around and rape us all with unannounced price hikes next month. Let us talk about whether the deal is working out for us or not -- just like all of the other deals on here. This one is even more important than most other deals since we've all entered a contract with a company that we know next to nothing about -- and our only resource and recourse comes from knowing other people on this site who also got in on it. We all got in on this deal because of this site -- let us also protect ourselves and discuss amongst ourselves on this site as this deal continues to develop -- please and thank you.

That is all I have to say about that.

Summary:

If you didn't want your website to be exploited then you should have spent more time making it not exploitable. PERIOD. Not our fault; THEIRS!!

Mr.Ritz 10-18-2012 08:33 PM

LoL you can't call it a better deal it is stealing when you know that is not the correct price. I don't think anyone here can argue that a 19.99 month plan is correct for someone that lives in NYC where the ticket costs 20 dollars just for one.

Yeah they are stupid for farking up this bad tho but they are going to correct the prices at sometime because they will be bleeding money if everyone was on a 19.99 plan.

krazyshopper 10-18-2012 09:05 PM

But then again wasn't this great publicity for them? Nobody seems to have heard of them. I am definitely the only one at my multiplex that uses movie pass. They know me as the moviepass guy.

LoL I am going to be that guy but the damn pass better get here before they pull Dark Knight and a few other movies at the end of their run. I expect they will be pulled this sunday >_>

How long did it take you to get your pass?

MotorolaX 10-18-2012 09:13 PM

Went again to see a movie tonight, it was an AMC, check in went through very first time using android which was nice, card kept getting declined though, had to phone in and they resolved it. If you go make sure you give yourself some buffer for error.

definitely buffer time for the first time you use it. a lot of people including myself have had to call in.

I finally got it to start working at the kiosk. And for the last two days it works on the second try that i check in. After i started pushing the maps app or navigation app to locate me.

How long did it take you to get your pass?

It took two days, and then i got it on the third day. I really recommend Argo, that was such a good movie. It's about the Iran Hostage Crisis. And im happy because I saw it for free. It is my fourth movie this month. So I guess it counts as a free one. And all movies I see now for the next thirty days I guess I'll consider free. So this is a slamming deal.

After check in you have a thirty minute window to purchase your ticket either at the ticket booth or the kiosk. BUT. You can buy your ticket for a movie that starts three hours later if you want. Because once your card is activated you get to choose again, which showtime you want to see. So if it's 1pm, you can use your thirty minute window to purchase a ticket for 11pm. This i found out from talking to their customer support.

This could be a loop hole to buy multiple tickets for a specific date but you would need to go to the theater to check in.

It's not invite "only." You can sign up, and you can get in in a few days tops. Also, when you invite people, you gain a free month. That in itself is strictly against Slickdeals policy.

Parachute07 10-19-2012 12:23 PM

Signed up on Monday and still no card. I'm bummed - I was hoping to catch a matinee today and one tomorrow. By the time the mail comes tomorrow, it'll be too late and I won't get a chance to use it until Monday. Didn't it say two business days somewhere? I know the welcome email says within 5 business days, but I thought it said you'd get the card within 2 business days when I signed up? nonetheless, no news. . . bummer.

Yeah it did say 2 days somewhere and someone on here said they got theirs on the third day.. I have yet to get mine I really hope it comes sat.. Still, gotta give them sometime as the email does say within 5 days and the word SHOULD so.. I guess Ill give them until tuesday. Does anyone know where these cards are mailed out from?

KrazyShopper is the one who got it on the third day. Someone else who has been posting here ordered last Friday late and got it Tuesday (I PM'd to ask) and said it was postmarked in Illinois with a return address in Vegas I believe. I know that the USPS can be a crapshoot, so I'm not blaming it on them, I'm just impatiently awaiting here. Though I should be appreciative - it has been giving me a little time to learn the key tips and tricks from the folks who already have it.

I think they try to load the exact amount hence the check-in. If I go to one of my AMCs before noon it's only $6 so they probably have a way of telling how much it is for a specific time at a specific theater.

I signed up on a Wed night and got my card on the next Monday. There was probably a surge of people signing up so it may take a little longer for some people.

Wonder if they are sending first class mail which is 2-3 days or standard which is 2-9 days.

Alex 10-19-2012 02:15 PM

Tried going to a movie just now but could not check in no matter how close I was to the theater. Got pissed off and went home to complain to moviepass since I had already missed the start of the movie. During my chat, I realized that their location for the theater was 1 mile south of where the theater actually was.So if you have problems with not being able to check in, view their map and make sure it's in the correct spot.

Also, it annoys me that you can't check into a showtime up until the start time. Listings go gray 15-20 minutes before they actually start.

From my understanding someone on here said you could check in 15 min before the movie then just buy another showtime for the ticket.

Alex 10-19-2012 02:21 PM

Yeah, I know. I mentioned it in the other thread. Just annoying more than anything.

But it's nice to know that what you check in for and what you actually purchase to see isn't linked.

It's supposed to be that u can check in to any show time for that day but u then have a 30 minute window to pay for the movie at the kiosk w/ the Moviepass card. So, u can check in for a movie at 2pm for a 10pm showing, use card to pay for ticket at kiosk.

Alright, if anyone mentions they have an invite or they want an invite again, this post will be deleted again, and we'll have to start collecting information all over again. So please stop. You are just going to piss everyone off.

The last thread was 60 pages long with a lot of discussion and information on it and it's been removed. Trying to avoid what happened last time.

Well, pretty much you get the card and hope you don't have problems trying to buy the ticket with the app. Tons of information in the 60 page thread that just went bye bye because of everyone asking on the "trick" to get 19.99

Very much so, and email also says it welcomes users to its "beta" program. They started with a voucher system since Nov. 2011. They started developing the phone gps app/mobile site since July 2012 after AMC/Landmark theaters refused to honor the vouchers. So, yes, there are going to be some hiccups till the app/site gets tweaked or until if they're able to work a future partnerships with theater owners, online ticketers, and the studios.

FierceDeityLink 10-19-2012 08:54 PM

$20 is gone. It was a promotion that they are no longer running. It was $5 off per month, so for some regions it was $20.

Yeah looper suppose to be really good.. I hope I get my card sat too :/

Rockalittle 10-19-2012 10:16 PM

Received my card yesterday. Activation was simple, just followed the prompts.
Used it for the first time today. It went very smooth. One or 2 hiccups at the kiosk were due to my being unfamiliar with the machine.
Check in worked in less than a minute. Saw Taken 2. Tomorrow I'll probably see Loopers.

harikc1980 10-19-2012 10:50 PM

Looks like it doesn't work for Indian movies as these are special event pricing $15 each ticket and I can't find in the moviepass app..

It's just any kiosk a certain theater may have, otherwise just go to the regular ticket window and pay like it was any other debit card. (As long as they accept discover)

I'll 1-up you guys.

First, my girlfriend and I signed up on the 15th (last Monday night) and haven't seen a card (I know that doesn't beat last Sunday like someone else mentioned).

But even more of a pain billing-wise....

As the invite fiasco was going on, they shut down the email invites for a while -- or, at least, we were getting error messages. I tried to sign my girlfriend up. I entered her CC info and name and then hit "continue" to go to the page where you entered your billing address and shipping address. After I entered the CC info, it gave me an error. I posted the text from that error and someone else posted an image in the old thread (thanks for deleting that Ghost Mod -- whoever deleted that thread deleted so much useful information and couldn't even be bothered to respond to this thread to confirm why they deleted it. Thanks again for that.)

So it never took me to the page to enter the billing address. So, I tried again later and it told me that the email address had already been used. I tried to log in using the email and the password we used to sign up. It wouldn't let me log in. So I clicked the "reset password" link and it gave me the password reset email. I clicked the link in the password reset email, which brought me to the form to type in a new password. I entered a new password and hit submit and it gave me an error that said I couldn't reset my password because the account had no billing address and no shipping address and no zip code.

So. I just exited and gave up on that and I signed my girlfriend up using a different email address and credit card.

Well, lo and behold, they charged the original credit card -- without even having a billing address for it. The charge went through (it isn't just pending). The charge also went through on the 2nd credit card (for the account that actually has her billing and shipping address).

So now, I know what I need to do is contact MoviePass to cancel the first account -- but I've been hesitant because I don't want to confuse them and have them delete the account that all of her billing info is on. So I've been trying to wait for the cards to come. Since the first account she signed up for had no billing or shipping address, I imagine they won't be able to send a card. When the card comes through for her "real" account, I plan to activate that card and then call them to cancel the account that was never activated.

I hope they refund the $20......

But yeah -- so at this point, we've shelled out for three accounts and haven't seen a card. I know it says 5 business days.....and if we don't count today (even though mail comes on Saturdays), that gives them until Monday I guess. I'm just bummed because as I (and Mr. Ritz) mentioned above, it did say somewhere during sign-up that you would get your card within 2 business days. The revelation above that some people have waited more than 3 weeks is super-disappointing. Last weekend, I didn't go see Argo because I figured I'd catch a Matinee on Wednesday. Then I signed up for this on Monday, so I'm not going to pay to see a movie with this pass coming.....but I was really hoping to get a chance to go to the movies this weekend. And I know I'm being impatient....but man, I want my pass :-). Three weeks would really piss me off. I know, I know -- it's a small company and they had a FLOOD of sign-ups -- but like someone else mentioned, an email update to let everyone know that they got a little bogged down at least would be nice.

So, now to wait for Monday and sit back and read updates from those of you who are using this thing......

Billymadison51 10-20-2012 05:02 PM

You know, I tried testing out the invites, just to see what it would look like and see the price tied to it. So I sent one to myself under a different email address. However, when I try to "sign up" I get an error message. Anyone experience this?

It says:

We're sorry, but something went wrong.

We've been notified about this issue and we'll take a look at it shortly.

In the mean time, take a look at the [movies page link]

So, now to wait for Monday and sit back and read updates from those of you who are using this thing......

I got my original order refunded when it was $29.99. Now I have the $19.99 plan. I'd sign into the account you want and activate the card first. At least you'll know which card is the right one. Then, call or chat online to the fix your problem with the first order.

That's the error I was talking about before. I got that error AFTER I put in CC info -- and it charged me. If you have a screen shot of that error, would you mind posting it so I have it for future reference? TIA.

By the way -- the way to resolve that is probably just to clear your cookies/use a new browser/try an incognito window. Although it won't definitely resolve it, it probably will.

eliter1 10-20-2012 07:24 PM

Used mine to see Seven Psychopaths (Very good movie) and had no trouble checking in and using it at the counter with the coupon. I hope they come out with the android app pretty soon.

I saw someone from moviepass post on facebook that you could go watch a movie if you hadn't received your card and they would just refund it later. I don't know how much of a pain the process would be but someone may want to try it.

krazyshopper 10-20-2012 09:17 PM

My card is working well now. So far, i love it. (Was disappointed in paranormal activity 4...didn't live up to the others)

I signed up for the amc stubs rewards program. It's 12 bucks but I think it's worth it. I mean especially for us because we will always use it. For amc every, xx amount of movies u see u get 10 bucks to spend on tickets or concession stand purchases. I havent got the card yet, so i just give the cashier my card number to get points.

i just read on the moviepass blog that its perfectly fine to sign up for your theaters loyalty programs and collect points.

Oh, how interesting...I tried opening the invite page which is:

and got a "Sorry, the club is packed." message. Hopefully they honor everyone else who has gotten in. I'm still waiting for my card - I signed up Tuesday night.

You don't even need your number to add tickets to your account. You can add them later on their website. I was trying to see if I could get one for cheaper because I saw people getting it for $6 with a promo code. Not sure if anybody knows about that. I think I'll just use my mom's stubs card to get her some freebies with the dollars Movie Pass adds to it.

Also, don't forget that you get a free one-size upgrade on concessions with it. You pay for a medium and get a large (at least with popcorn and drinks). Large comes with free unlimited refills, so you can refill on your way out and go home with a huge Coke or whatever. And that's even better after Movie Pass has bought you $100 in tickets - every hundred bucks gives you a free ten bucks, so then you use the free money to buy the drinks. If only my closest AMC were closer than an hour and a half away, I would be abusing the crap out of the rewards.

Business must be good. They only let people in for about a week. Or they are just being really careful in their beta testing.

Well, hopefully they will hire more people since they already charged our credit cards and a lot of us are still waiting for our cards. It makes sense that they need to establish a solid base and will roll out the service in phases to grow steadily.

I've been waiting over a week since last Friday, Oct. 12...

Oh yeah - every time. That's what your twelve bucks buys you - free upgrades every time, ten bucks every time you spend a hundred, and a place to view your ticket stubs online forever and ever. I bought it last year for the best picture showcase and it was awesome.

Well, they did say it was beta and to be fair, the slickdeals effect almost crushed them those first few days. I think they need some time to get themselves in order and make sure everything runs smooth before accepting new members.

My card took 7 days to arrive. Remember it's business days so weekends dont count.

Quick tip* FOR AMC STUBS MEMBERS
As soon as you get your $10 ON YOUR AMC STUBS ACCOUNT go to the ticket counter and ask for a $10 GC. It won't expire and you can use it to buy a ticket. Granted, the ticket purchase should be a moot point now that we have movie pass but, you never know.....

THIS TIP IS FOR AMC STUBS ONLY.
Sorry for any confusion

Can't they see you aren't buying movie tickets? I know the ToS says you are to only buy tickets with the card.

Rockalittle 10-21-2012 10:55 AM

Sorry I should have been more clear. I was talking about the AMC membership card. Your $10 can expire i've heard so buying a GC with the credit allows more flexibility and no expiration.

You're getting confused. Rock and I are talking about the AMC Stubs membership -- which is a separate theater loyalty club. Every time you spend a hundred bucks at AMC, you get $10 of free credit on your AMC Stubs card (which you can use for whatever you want from the AMC theater). Since MoviePass works like a debit card, each time you "buy" a ticket with your MoviePass, you can accumulate credit with your AMC Stubs membership. Once you've "spent" $100 on movie tickets (swiped your MoviePass enough times to hit $100 in AMC ticket prices), you get ten free dollars to spend at AMC. Rock is saying that rather than keep it tied to your personal AMC Stubs membership, use it to buy a $10 AMC gift card -- then do whatever you want with the gift card (buy concessions, give it as a gift, sell it for $5 and subsidize your MoviePass membership -- all up to you).

Again, let me assert how badly I wish I lived near an AMC theater.

Mr.Ritz 10-21-2012 11:02 AM

Yeah wish I had an AMC.. We have crown which has a nasty ToS if you ask me.

And the rewards suck... 100 dollars to get a free small coke and 2 dollar candy on tuesday

Anyone read the fine print on this? How you will owe for all the movies you saw if you cancel in first year?

You can no longer get gift cards with the AMC stub dollars you've accumulated. They changed the terms a few months ago.

If you cancel early, you owe $20 plus retail price on all the tickets you've used minus what you've already paid in membership fees.

Earning your AMC Stubs Rewards is simple: The more you use your AMC Stubs card, the faster you’ll earn them, and if you’re ever wondering how many rewards you have or how long you have to use them, you can log in to your account online and find out. So buying some candy isn’t just a great idea, it’s also an investment in some future candy that your AMC Stubs Rewards will pay for, and that’s exciting, because everyone knows that future candy is the best kind of candy.

I don't know about any change of terms. I bought a GC The day I saw Bourne Legacy. What was that? 2 months ago?

From the terms:

2. BENEFITS.

The AMC Stubs Program entitles Members to the following rewards (“Rewards").

a. Spend $100 on purchases made at a participating AMC Theatres location and earn a $10 virtual Reward. Maximum qualifying spend per day is $500 per account. Members will not receive credit for spend greater than $500 per day per account. The $10 virtual reward will appear in theMember’s account. All earned Rewards are valid for 90 days from date of issuance at which time they will expire.A Member may redeem his/her earned and unexpired Rewards only at participating AMC Theatres locations in the US by (1) presenting his/her card in connection with a purchase and (2) notifying the AMC employee at the time and point of sale that they want to redeem the Reward. Rewards are not redeemable online and rewards may not be used toward the purchase of AMC gift cards.

Correct, and you have 90 days till the rewards credit expires. You have to keep track of it because AMC certainly doesn't remind you about when it's going to expire. It's a good program if you go to the theaters with a large family or have people in your party that will let you pay for your group's tickets, and they pay you afterwards.

The thing I'd be worried about is having your Stubs credit taken away when you buy a ticket with the Movie Pass card. Gift card route was a great idea. Never thought about that.

Yes, everyone here has read the fine print. There was a 60-page thread on this that got deleted a few days ago where the terms were discussed and discussed and discussed a few more times. It's safe to say that at least everyone posting in this thread is well aware of the terms.

But, for me anyway, it works out pretty simple -- if I see enough movies that it's going to be that expensive to cancel, I just won't cancel. It's only a 1-year agreement and it's not that expensive. After the first year, you can cancel at any time. So worst case scenario, I'm out the monthly subscription price times 12 and I can go to the movies any day I want to for a year. Like most folks, I plan to test it out for the first 30 days and see how it goes (you can cancel in the first 30 days without penalty). If I'm not happy, I'll cancel in the first month. If it seems to be working out, and MoviePass isn't eating anyone's first-born children, I'll keep it. Assuming I ever get my card, that is.............

It's to prevent people from seeing a ton of movies in the first month or two and then just cancelling and driving them out of business.

What really sold me is the fact that I accumulate points using the AMC Stubs Rewards program. Sure, I can buy those gold and silver pass tickets for pretty cheap, but those don't get counted by their rewards program anymore! Now I can get full retail-priced tickets counting towards my rewards.

How long have you been waiting for your card?

Right. The policy made me a bit wary at first, but it makes sense. If you're one of those members that would have to pay hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars to cancel, then why cancel? The service is actually worth it to you!

Did anyone got the card recently who registered last week? Just want to know if they are sending the cards immediately...

First it said 2 days, then 5 now it says 7 days. Some people have been waiting 3 weeks.

I ordered last Monday night. Assuming we don't count Saturday (even though the mail runs on Saturday), tomorrow would make the 5 business day quote.......but as Mr. Ritz mentioned, they are now saying up to 7 days -- and now this word on the street from FB is talking about 3 weeks. There's at least one person on Twitter who, a couple of days ago, said it had been 2 weeks and she didn't have the card. I'm thinking they are way overloaded.

Yeah, the loyalty program is a really good benefit. For amc stubs if u see a movie a day, it'll take a little more than a week to get your first 10 dollar reward. If u get concession stand stuff it will be sooner than 9 days. I guess it's moviepass right for their members to use the theaters loyalty program. Moviepass is paying full price for the tickets, I read, their not getting any deals or price breaks with the theaters on the price of movie tickets.

I think moviepass is/will make money on the people that pay for the membership but don't use it too much. I think that a lot of people on slickdeals will use the heck out of it so they are not going to be making money on us. There are always a lot of people that sign up for monthly memberships such as Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, etc. that don't use it as much as they initially thought so companies end up making a lot of money from a large portion of the people that sign up.

Yes think gym memberships. You buy it and eventually you stop going.

ace198 10-22-2012 08:47 AM

It's really not that hard to have the membership pay for itself. See a movie once a week and you'll go over the monthly fee. With AMC's matinee prices you'll have to see some more movies to do so if you like going in the morning. Now you don't have to do so to save money. Go anytime you want because you're paying the same price. Definitely not a good business model if you want to make money but it is a beta still.

Score!

I just signed up and recommended it to a friend. Heres to hoping for a good service. I may not go see movies as much as id like but with the ability to see unlimited why not see em all? Well worth it if you look at it in that light.

Only caveat I see is that whole check in process. It requires a phone and gps usage. Some people have mentioned GPS issues. Its just using a third party tool that can be up in the air sometimes with its reliability. I'll wait and reserve judgement whenever my card arrives down the road here.

Well no, let's be careful there. The invite party seems to be what got the last thread like this shut down. If someone actually stumbles upon this thread looking for invites, I'm sure they could figure out how to get one without announcing it on the board. Let's not start linking to other places before a mod deletes it and never shows up to explain why.

I'm going to feel bad for how much I'm going to use this thing once I get it.

slickfree 10-22-2012 11:26 AM

Well the whole point it to use it unlimited. Now
What is the monthly fee? Do you have to do something to keep your account current every month? Remember if you cancel before 1 year you're on the hook for everything. So you needto go enough times to pay for a years worth of membership.

I wont but their toss will allow them to change the price

khalid7412002 10-22-2012 11:28 AM

Just an update.

I ordered last tuesday evening, 10/16/2012, and today I just received my two cards in Sacramento california. So about a week to get it to me. Hopefully the rest of you that ordered last week will get them today or tomorrow as well.

Now regarding them making money, I signed up for the $19.99 for both cards, however, I would not hesitate to pay them $25 simply to help them make money so this program lasts, and I think that $25 would still be a cheap price to pay for a program that I envision I will use frequently.

Mr.Ritz 10-22-2012 11:34 AM

I too order my movie pass Tue night and just got mine!

Going to try it out today.

Nothing stops someone from asking a person that says COOOL! Thanks. for an invite. You can't help idiots still asking also. So by the fact I mention that when your registered you get invites doesn't mean someone should ask for an invite. If they do its the own fault for not obeying the rules. I saw nothing stated sayin I couldn't mention invites are given when people register so that they can invite there family. This is a service that beneifits when people want to go together to the movies. So the knowlegde that you can get invites without worry of loosing out on the 2000 lifehacker is giving is a benefit.

Mr.Ritz 10-22-2012 11:38 AM

So you can only get a movie ticket 15 min before the showtime?

ace198 10-22-2012 11:38 AM

Yeah, got mine as well. I got two cards because I canceled the one for $29.99.

Better not lose your card. Gonna cost $10 to replace. Not going to break your bank but nice to know.

Manuelpl 10-22-2012 11:42 AM

I got my AMC Stubs card today. They started me with $12 Stub points , so only 88 to go .

Can't wait for those cards to come in.

No it is not. Once the card activates (by checking in) you have 30 minutes to make the purchase .

You posted a referral link. It wasn't even a movie pass link. The mods removed it. Please don't kill this thread by being inconsiderate
I have added a direct link to movie pass in the wiki. Anybody can sign up there and wait for their invite.

I added what I remembered to the wiki. It's the short version but includes important things to remember.

Also you can use you AMC stubs cards and REGAL cards with moviepass purchases.

.99 cents store candy is the same size (or close) as theatre candy.

Thats all I can remember at the mo'.

Ok, First foreseeable moviepass problem down the road which I'm starting to realize after a week of using moviepass...and this doesn't apply to those who plan on using their moviepass lightly.

, if u are one of the people planning to use your moviepass like crazy, and if u are a slick dealer chances are that u are, you'll quickly hit the point where there is nothing left to see..except for whatever comes out the upcoming weekend.

I guess in that sense moviepass is protected from big time users from overusing it..

Basically, once u are all caught up with the movies playing in the theaters, The rate you are seeing movies is forced to go down by a lot.

I considered that as well but, rather than a standstill, we will just be caught up with current movies. There should still be 3-4 a month that are new and there are always the art film type cinemas that show foreign films and documentaries.
For example, I would like to see Brooklyn Castle but I'll have to go to manhattan to see it. I'll make a day of it and get out and about.
I could use a bit of culture LOL

Oh, I definitely ...eventually.. plan on using the indie theater nearby which I have never been to.

Rockalittle 10-22-2012 01:03 PM

I'm also finding that I cant see a movie as often as I'd like. I mean we still have jobs and responsibilities so I'll just spread it out.

What I've really been wondering about is the "specials". For instance, a local theatre is going to have a marathon showing of the Twilight films. If the admission price is the same as a ticket, that would be pretty cool.
Twilight haters, take it easy, I haven't even seen the first one but, the idea of seeing some theater marathons is pretty sweet.

I saw this on my account. It says that my contract ends next month. I don't think I'm getting the $19.99 price all year.

OK, how early do I have to be within "some feet" of theater before movie start time? And how long you have to actually purchase the ticket? TIA

I asked some q's today via the live chat heres what I was told.

You can “check-in” anytime during the day but you must purchase your tickets within 30minutes of check-in. IE, you’re on lunch go get your tickets for a movie in the evening. They recommend an hour before hand just in case there are any problems. But they said you could still technically purchase a ticket for a 9:00pm showing at 9:05pm. At least that’s what the chat rep said.

You cannot get pre-sale tickets currently as the check-in is for current day only purchases. So if it’s a REALLY popular movie that sells out your screwed, honestly I haven’t seen a sell out for an entire day in a long time.

The presale is a little bummer but not a deal breaker.

Also I was told 3D and IMAX will come eventually, there trying for it. I can see them having an issue with people seeing the 3d version and 2d version of a movie just to see it again. Likewise with IMAX, which kinda works around the see a movie once.

In the end as great of a service this sounds like, really it will all balence out in the end and break even with hopes some people won't use it that month.

I signed up last Tuesday (10/16) and my card came in the mail today. The return address on the envelope is in Lisle, IL. However, the postal stamp shows that it actually shipped through/from Las Vagas, NV on 10/19. So, those of you on the West coast may get yours a day earlier than us on the east coast, but it looks like the do wait a couple days before mailing out.

I am going to see my first movie (Taken 2) with it now. I will post later about my experience.

Usually only higher end theaters run specials like that. One place not where i live :C used to do Lord of the rings marathons. Tickets cost more tho. They also had Myster Science 3000 type stuff too but once again tickets were a few dollars more for that type of stuff :C

I don't think I ever want to watch a movie in 3D again. The last one I saw was Alice in Wonderland. I would only want to watch a movie in IMAX if it was filmed to be in IMAX not like many movies that they just show in "IMAX".

So I was thinking. Say I want to watch a movie in IMAX, couldn't I just check in to a regular movie and tell the clerk to just charge me the none IMAX on the card amount and pay the difference out of pocket. This would probably work for me since I would do it once MAYBE twice a year.
