Canon Powershot SX40 HS Camera - $194 Display model or $215 NIB Target Clearance B&M YMMV

Canon Powershot SX40 HS Super Zoom Point and Shoot Camera - Target Clearance - $194 Display model, $215 NIB. B&M YMMV

I've been watching this camera for a few weeks, and also realize the SX50 (this year's model) is now available. I've been reading reviews and can't justify spending $500 on the SX50 model.

I went to Target yesterday and found the SX40 HS model on clearance for $215. I asked if I could get the display model for a discount, and he said they can take 10% off the price. I got the box with everything in it. I also got the 3 year extended warranty for $29

This is B&M at Target and a potential big YMMV. I asked if they had other stores in the area with this same deal and he was able to search the computer and tell me atleast 5 target stores in the Northern Virginia area still has these in stock.

Amazon is still selling this camera for $352 and received 4.5 out of 5 stars from 300 reviews Amazon Link [amzn.com]

Also, check out the zoom capabilities in this youtube video. The user zooms on to the moon with high detail. Watch the whole video to see how small the moon is when he zooms all the way back. PowerShot SX40 HS Zoom Capabilities - Moon [youtube.com]

Do you know the SKU?

mrstangblb 10-19-2012 06:31 AM

Nice find... I've been looking for one of those things here for weeks, but they've all sold out, doggone it. The only thing is there's another post here about it. Thanks, though.

Old news.Had this deal for 3 week. I got this camera Display Model 20% off + 5 Red card.

jimx200 10-19-2012 07:15 AM

My best SD of this year: yesterday I find the demo camera at Target on closeout. I told the manager I was concerned about it being a demo and said the price was too high. He asked what I had in mind, so I told him 50% off...yup, got it for $107. Almost feel guilty...not!

Thanks for a productive post.

After searching there are no other threads started on this camera under $200. So.... 1) thanks for not posting the deal three weeks ago and 2) go thread crap somewhere else.

There was a post 1 week ago for $270 and it was considered a "popular deal". If someone bought one from that deal, they now have an option to return and get it for potentially ~$70 less.

Move along....

That's awesome, I tried haggling but he stayed at 10% off. He said it was the only thing he was allowed to give.

I picked one up a couple of weeks ago. It was the demo model. It was listed as $215 but the clerk said it was marked down to $150 plus tax. It had all the accessories except the lens cap and box. I called Canon and they shipped out a new lens cap at no charge.

It will be a gift for my daughter so hopefully she likes it.

this is a super zoom camera. so it shines when you're outdoors and need to zoom in on something far far away.

there are better cameras for indoors or if you don't need the zoom.

Not a re-post @ the $214.98 price point, but also not an original find.

If your store has made it this far with it at $215 I suggest waiting until Monday for the 70% off price.

No PM is their policy. If you find a rep who doesn't know that, they are highly untrained.
Plus, how many does your store have? If you buy the floor model, it won't get cheaper at your store.

mnisrshdyd 10-19-2012 11:48 AM

Sent hubby in search, and one store wouldn't budge on "no floor model discount". Ugh, that has been pretty universal for me in Target clearance world. Will keep at it. $215 for open box isn't so great.
Sure wish I'd gotten one of those "thanks for being a cardholder" 5% coupon postcards others reported.

I was told I have a 30 return policy, so I would imagine they would adjust the price lower if it's cheaper. You could just buy the lower price one and then return the other one.

kbmum 10-19-2012 12:05 PM

This is a very good camera. I've been using it since March (when Amazon had it for $250) and have been very happy with the photos and videos. I gave it a workout during a trip to Disney World -- more than 3,000 photos taken indoors, outdoors, inside dark rides, night shots, fireworks -- and it gave me some of the best pictures I've ever taken. The zoom allowed me to get close-ups of animals at Animal Kingdom that are fairly far removed from guests (like the gorillas on a walking trail). I've owned other Canon cameras, and the battery on this one lasts quite a long time. I had a backup battery, but almost never needed to use it. I also like that I can use filters with an adapter. It's definitely worth the money, especially if you can get it for $215 or less.

Actually, the first time I saw it posted as 50% off was Oct. 1. So, this would actually be the third week. 1st-8th, 8th-15 two weeks, 15-22 three weeks. I thought it would go last week, but didn't

It is explicitly against their policy to adjust as well as to put it back out for purchase upon your request or at a time you would hang around for. Not saying it doesn't happen; just reminding they train their customer service people about this.
You could do the second option, of course, if there is still one available.

That's just CRAAAAAZY! Nice deal. I paid $269 for mine 3 Weeks ago at best buy.

DQue 10-19-2012 01:26 PM

I punched in the DCPI of this camera at 3 Target stores this morning. It looks like Target (in my area) already purged it outta their clearance database (Item not found error message).

As with many other clearance items, whenever the cashier scans the item and they see this error message, they will either :

1) Enter the sticker price found at the box, which will be still at 50% level $215 for the majority of Target stores.

2) Or enter the price which you name (if you're smart enough to peel off the red clearance sticker price before letting the cashier scan the item and this will be IMPOSSIBLE because the camera has to be paid at the electronic counter, so dream on).

The only scenario you will get the 70% level price is that you HAVE TO know a cashier working at a Target which also still HAS any SX40 left. Display model is a hard push and BNIB is almost close to ZERO.

Thinking about PMing to a lower price? You might as well buy a Mega million lotto ticket and bet you'll be the jackpot winner later tonight! NOT GONNA HAPPEN for 99.99999% people! (the cashiers at the front Customer Service all know to refuse PMing for clearance items. And if you decide to return the item anyway, they WILL hold the item til the end of day before allowing the item to be returned back on shelve for selling. Lots of things can happen in between, as in they will buy the item themselves or call in their friends, relatives to do the same.)

If I were you, I'd blank out that detail receipt info. Otherwise, that cashier will be FIRED! Target reads SD you know!

BTW, the only reason you get lucky is you and that cashier know each other. No Target cashier working at the CSR counter is that stupid! They all know to follow the rule not to PMing clearance items and don't allow customer to return and buy back the item within a 24-hour period.

Nevertheless since that cashier was nice enough to do it for you anyway, for whatever reason, you need to return the favor by protecting that cashier's identity. Your bragging can and will jeopardize his/her job!

BankofGreed 10-19-2012 02:52 PM

(This applies to items where the cashier has to get the item for you).

There's a slight chance that the camera is cheaper than what the red tags says. Sometimes the "markdown" team misses a few items. The best bet is to print out the bar code at home (just find the UPC and use any of the free UPC creator sites), and scan the printed up barcode at any price check scanner.

Once in a while you will get lucky and find an item that scans for cheaper than what the price tag says. Good to know instead of asking the cashier to pull items out of cases.

I've been eyeing a SX40 at my local target. But then I found a Canon 320 HS came up 70% off + 25% display discount (best she would do) = $46.91 out the door. The SX40 next to it was still 50% off (I asked her to double check). Maybe next week it will hit 70% assuming it lasts that long.

briank642 10-19-2012 04:39 PM

Reading comprehension is not your strong suit. Read my first post where I said the MANAGER (store manager to be exact) gave me the 50% discount. In fact, this is the second SX40 I purchased..the first one I got a 20% discount 0ff the $214.without even asking!
Again, there are no hard and fast rules when a item is on clearance..but you must speak to someone like a department manager (my first cam) or store manager like the second one. Your retail sales knowledge is zip.

RandomDealz 10-19-2012 11:14 PM

The discount for floor samples must vary from store to store. The store I usually shop has a salesperson in electronics that has been there for at least a few years. He told me that floor sample TV's are discounted 10% and camera's 30%. I couldn't find the SX40, though I did see a Panasonic Lumix GF3, on clearance for 249.98 with the 14-42 lens. With 30% off it would have been around $175, before tax, and a Redcard discount.

How many ppl in here (SD) will have the same "luck" sweet talking to a manager at Target? A big fat ZERO.

Thanks for trolling! You ARE the worker at the front CSR return desk. And you WILL GET FIRED for being stupid posting your receipt bragging on the internet. Trust me, Target is reading and scouring the internet for this type of stunt.

DQ, wow, paranoid much?? You are like trying to talk to a 4 year old with all of your objections and stupidity. Trust you?? Lol...you are entertaining though.:bounce:
For the rest of you SDer's trying for the Canon or other items, ask for a further discount. Another case in point: about 2 months ago, I found a out of box, but new, Canon 55-250 lens on clearance for $210.which is too high as Amazon sells these for $179. I spoke to the store manager about my concerns for a out of box lens. She offered to discount it a additional 30%. of which I passed since lenses are delicate and wary of out of box. It had 4 clearance stickers on it, so it's been there awhile.
Btw, I don't work for Targetand don't know any manager, or other employees..

mnisrshdyd 10-20-2012 09:31 AM

Thanks OP, I really really needed a camera!

A couple of notes:
Target has a new Camera Protection Plan that is only 2 years but includes "Accidental Damage from Handling" including drops, spills, cracked screens
It's $21 for items up to 199.99 and $34 for items $200-$299

This is different than the 3yr Electronics Mechanical Plan mentioned in the OP. Obviously, each has their own advantages/disadvantages but be aware there is a choice.

My CSR did say he could not sell a protection plan (either) on an open box item, so be aware of that. He may be incorrect and obviously others here have had luck, but this was news to me.

It worked out really well for me in the end, though, because he ended up selling me the last NIB for the open-box 10% discount when I wanted to buy the warranty. I suspect they get an incentive for selling the warranty; just a guess since he was suddenly willing to discount the other. Worked out really well because I then got the new one at 10% off plus that protection for $21 rather than $34.

Very happy overall.

I picked one up for $150 after the 30% discount. Not sure if it was a floor sample. The box had been opened, battery and charger were out of the wrapping. Cosmetically the camera appears to be in excellent condition.

The math on the SX40 and 320HS didn't add up. 70% of the MSRP prices of those cameras don't come to what were shown in the DCPI clearance stickers.

Someone been working at Target and playing games with the DCPI sticker gun and their math ain't that great!!!!!

Thanks for trolling. You'll need to go back to your Algebra math class though!:lmao:

yea. that's odd. those prices don't make sense. pretty sure the target system automatically does the calculations too.

1. In your face, haters. Trolls suck. Screw off.
Gratz to you, Sealclubber. Slick.

2. I've owned this camera for 6+ months. Love it, favorite one I've ever owned, including the glass Canons and the Sony NEX series.
Just something about having the digital chip clean up the sharpness on an image 34 miles away and it looks like you took it from arm's length.

I appreciate the post even if it was old news. I went to one Target that didn't have it, but the 2nd one had a floor model marked at $214. I asked for a discount because of it being a floor model. They gave me another 10%. I'm happy with getting it for $193. Not as good a deal as some others got, but I'm still happy.

fyu 10-21-2012 11:54 AM

no more 70%. it's officially deleted from their database.

That doesn't kill the deal. I bought a NEX a year after it was gone from the database. It wouldn't even scan. A mgr had to come over to check me out.

it does, because unless it already has a 70% sticker on it, then they'll either salvage it or sell it as the last marked price.

sisq0kidd 10-21-2012 12:04 PM

Saw this on Monday at my local Target for $107 (display model). Asked for 10% off for open items and got another 5% from my red cad. $100 after tax, not bad :)

Imelda9w 10-22-2012 08:23 AM

Thanks OP! Repped x 4! Picked up a display model with original box and all the accessories for $151 in Rosenberg, TX. Just in time for my son's birthday tomorrow :)

rak007 10-22-2012 09:06 AM

Went to Target at Allen, TX and they did not have it in clearance and nor in display. There was the ELPH320 for 125$ on clearance.

mnisrshdyd 10-22-2012 01:15 PM

The remaining SX40 was no longer at my T, so I can't verify it went 70%. Some others did (that were 50% until today), and I have no idea what to keep.

Canon Powershot ELPH320HS $62.54
Canon Powershot ELPH520HS $69.94
Nikon S8200 $74.29 (with 10% off open box)

and a weird markdown; CSA said it was supposed to get shipped back and somehow didn't
Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF3K 97.25 (with 10% off open box)

Looks like the Lumix was the best deal. I only need 1 camera. I guess I am off to research.

One store has the display, but guy still said $215. Don't know if it's even worth to go up.

There's nothing to research If you only want one, get the GF3.

THANKS! repped! What about the GF3 versus this SX40?

SX40 is probably more useful as a point/shoot model. But GF3 will yield better image quality and the interchangable lenses gives you more flexibility IF you would get lenses.

If your looking for a semi pro camera with options of lenses go with GF3. SX40 for a good (albeit bulky) all around shooter. Really for the price I'd get both and play around with each for the prices you stated you should easily be able to craigslist the one you don't prefer for at least the money you have in it (if not make a profit).

What are you looking for? The GF3 is a better camera hands down. But you will need to get a separate lens if you want to match the tele of the SX40. The SX40 is a P&S camera with a big lens. In the end, it is just a small sensor P&S camera. The image quality can't touch the GF3. The GF3 is a far more serious camera. Considering it's cheaper than the SX40 in your case, get the GF3.

SomeLurker 10-22-2012 04:39 PM

I stopped by two targets today and both had 1 left in stock at 50% off ($193 display models). Both said they were not sure when they would go to 70% off but said they would probably won't be there when they do.

DealMakerWhiz 10-22-2012 05:08 PM

Came very close to buying this before the price dropped but decided to go all out for the newer Canon Powershot SX50 HS with its 50x zoom. Getting it this early I had to pay full shot but WOW, what a camera! The focusing problem with the SX40 has been fixed and the addition of RAW imaging is great. Still, for this price, the SX40 is attractive. Had I not jumped on the newer SX50 I would be at Target now.

At this price give me links?
This Camera has a digi 5 sensor that seems to be enough to justify the price for me

What do you mean? How do you know this? I have noticed for a long time that cameras don't seem to go below 50%. And yet, from time to time, I see people posting receipts of 70% off cameras. Is this only occurring in certain locations? low foot traffic/countryside areas?

I have stalked several cameras over the last few years and have caught them all go from 50% off to salvage. One day 50% off. Next day, the camera rings up as "item not found" (i.e., salvage)

Same thing applies to ihome speakers (except some recent bluetooth speakers)

basically when the item is deleted it won't ring up. Best way to check is via the in-store price checker boxes.
I think target has started to do this to save money somehow. All the 70% posted are manual adjustments. That's why they don't calculate to 70% off.

I haven't gotten a 70% off camera in a long while.

digic 5 is more of a marketing term.

My experience is that if an item won't ring it up, it will show as "item not found" on the in-store price checker boxes as well. If I find these salvaged items, I ask a manager to sell it to me for the last markdown price (which they can look up on their PDA). It has always been 50% off. I don't understand what makes one Target choose to do a manual adjustment to 70% and another Target to send the item to salvage.

I was in a target a few minutes ago checking on a location for a brand new one (already have demo with 20% off) and he said that they had 2 left last week that they "shipped back to corporate" for salvage. I was waiting forever for these to go 70% off.

You're correct. I went to a Target yesterday. They had 1 SX40 left marked down to 50% off. I brought it up to purchase it and it wouldn't ring up when he scanned it. He had to manually input the price. These cameras are not making it to the 70% off mark in my area. 50% is the best it's gonna get for most.

mew24680 10-24-2012 02:29 PM

Same here they wouldnt go to 70 +(

SomeLurker 10-24-2012 02:34 PM

For those of you that bought the Powershot SX40 HS, here are a few recommended accessories that I bought:

2 extra batteries, extra charger (Wall and Car adapter), lcd screen protectors, micro fiber cleaning cloth $23 [amzn.com]

Camera Bag $11 (fits perfect with cleaning pen, two chargers and two extra batteries) [amzn.com]

Lens cap with center pinch tabs $5 [amzn.com]

Lens hood $10 [amzn.com]

Lens Cleaning Pen $6.79 [amzn.com]

blackrain 10-24-2012 09:27 PM

For those that got this at 70%, please post your store location in the wiki. It would be great to have a list of stores that tend to drop these to 70% off

kimdotcom 10-24-2012 09:42 PM

Wow, this thread is full of so much hate, it's ridiculous.

Anyways, great job for posting this OP, I was eyeing that camera for a long time and it kept slowly dropping.

I also got my $40 off $200 Target coupon which hopefully will make the deal sweeter.

My hate is directed towards a corporation, rather than members of SD or anyone in particular. This is what I referred to as being a thread full of hate. Do you ever read between the lines or try to connect things before saying things out loud? Heard it helps.

SomeLurker 10-26-2012 07:13 AM

noracrub 11-08-2012 03:55 PM

Bought one of these a few days ago. Store showed three in stock but they couldn't be found. I bought the display which was 50% off, with an extra 10% since it was the display. There was no box. They must have thrown that out when they put it on display but they did have the accessories in the back (lens cap, battery, strap and warranty info). The camera was displayed without the battery so I suppose it wasn't as abused as it otherwise would be. Was told that they do not sell warranty with display cameras. Unfriendly cashier also told me no return because it's a display item but receipt does not say that.

Some others have noted getting 30% off on display items. Also some have said they found this camera at 70% off last month.

Own it.
LOVE it.

Great camera and excels in outdoor / long range shots.
Perfect for son's sporting events and shooting pics of our kids at the park.
