Does anybody have personal experience with this keyboard? I've been looking for a gaming mechanical keyboard and wanted to know if this will get the job done.

GunMan 10-23-2012 07:09 PM

How does the quality of this keyboard compare to Cooler Master CM Storm Quick Fire Pro SGK-4010-GKCR1-US ?

tonyftw 10-23-2012 09:06 PM

Price is good, but those ratings....................................

rizorith 10-23-2012 09:13 PM

I got one with the brown switch in the previous deal. From the start, I had the problem with the cable. Annoying as all hell. And I gotta say, Newegg did not make it easy to get an exchange. It took 3 weeks total and I finally got a new one, which I haven't even opened yet.

I got this same deal last time with the other Rosewill speaker. I think the keyboard is fine for gaming for short periods of time. My hand got cramped after a while so I switched back to my Microsoft 7000 ergo keyboard. I like typing on it though, those red triggers never get old. The charging cable seems really fragile so it is not meant for moving around. If you leave it on a desk and don't kick the cord then it should last a long time.

Almost identical except for the partial backlight on the CM. I find it partially useful. I just don't like the non-tactile switches.

eta: the CM has a really nice cable retention, the rosewill has none--whicj probably contributed to the usb issue

aznchris99 10-23-2012 09:37 PM

Nice!!

brialee8 10-23-2012 09:55 PM

Theres a new illuminated version of the rosewill mechanical keyboards which dont have the mini usb issue, but those are full price

What about the usb port? Did they fix that issue because I heard some people say that they needed to glue it back or something. Also, these keyboards are based on Filco too right?

dadoody 10-23-2012 10:59 PM

Another cherry mx red board.

I used to hear about how rare the MX reds were, but I've been seeing this site advertise these boards every few days. What's up with all these red switch boards?

sidekudu 10-23-2012 11:06 PM

Great. I need a keyboard for my computer that I can play games again.

cnix 10-23-2012 11:39 PM

From review it looks like the product has terrible quality control with keys that malfunction within weeks of light use. I will pass on this.

rhosangjin 10-23-2012 11:55 PM

I personally think this is an awesome keyboard. I have owned and tried many mechanical keyboards over the past 2 years (Filco, Ducky, Steelseries, CoolerMaster, Razer, XArmor, WASDkeyboard, etc.) and I would say that this keyboard is awesome in terms of value. They are built to Filco quality IF you receive a non-faulty keyboard to begin with (I believe they are both Costar). Yes, the USB connector is very annoying in that it's very exposed for a fragile part, but as long as you're not moving your keyboard around all over the place and constantly putting stress on the connector, you should not run into any problems. I think as long as you enjoy the linear Cherry MX red switch, you will be greatly satisfied with this keyboard.

vxd 10-24-2012 12:39 AM

Awesome keyboard! Getting another one.

OctoberFox 10-24-2012 12:57 AM

I just don't trust Rosewill products. I've never had anything last long with them, not shavers, computer cases, nothing.

I can't help thinking a few dollars more for a different brand would be better. Not trying to TC here, just feel this is one of the worst brands out there. I feel the rating justify my position.

eman3000 10-24-2012 01:36 AM

I bought this yesterday when it was $64. I emailed Newegg requesting a $4 credit. I got a response within 8 minutes (it's 130AM here):

"Due to the constant fluctuation of prices in this market we cannot offer any price guarantees. As a onetime exception, I have issued you a credit for $3. Please allow 3-5 business days for the credit to be processed and returned to your original method of payment. Thank you in advance for your patience"

I think it's great that their customer service is very responsive, but only $3 back? I'm not going to complain about a dollar, but this just seems odd to me. I still love Newegg though. I've spent about a thousand bucks there this week, so what's another dollar, haha.

Apparently the loose mini usb connector has been fixed in currently shipping batches of keyboards.

I've had this keyboard for a while and was unfortunate enough to receive one from the old batch with the faulty connector. My fix involved opening up the keyboard and replacing the old lead-free solder with stronger 40/60 lead solder. I abuse the hell out of my connector and move my keyboard between rooms quite often and I haven't had any issues since the repair.

Since I knew of this going in and was handy with a soldering iron, it was a quick and painless fix that made this rebadged $150 Filco keyboard an absolute bargain. It's an even hotter deal now that the issue's been resolved. I love the smooth, linear feel of the MX reds and I'm reminded of that each time I go back to rubber dome keyboards.

When was this fixed? I bought one this year but forget exactly which month. My USB doesn't seem to be loose per-se in the mini USB connector but the connector itself seems to move up and down a little. However, the mini USB doesn't just fall out. Never really knew what the "loose USB connector" problem actually was... Never had any problems with my Rosewill over the couple months I've had it.

Amazon has it for $59.99 and free 2 day shipping if you have a prime account.

Do you have any evidence for it having been fixed, because I can't find any and would rather not have a better-than-average chance at having problems with my new keyboard.

At some point, Rosewill's OEM (Costar, Filco's OEM as well) starting putting globs to glue to hold the USB port in place, effectively fixing the problem. Why it took them so long to do something so obvious and cheap is beyond me. Without knowing anything about their supply chain, it's hard to say if you'll get a new one or not, but anyone with a screwdriver and an epoxy can do it themselves.

The keyboard is otherwise rock solid. I have a few of these that I opened up, resoldered myself, and reinforced with an epoxy. They've held up quite well. I want to order more, but have been locked out by NYS' ridiculous e-waste policies. I see now that Amazon is selling these for the same price delivered to NY, which only shows how pointless these e-waste laws are.

r0ge 10-24-2012 07:05 AM

Both of mine are going strong for the past 5 or 6 months. No USB problems here. I love typing on the reds. They're solid for gaming as well.

darkadious 10-24-2012 08:13 AM

^ they're primarily for gaming.

dwilson3k 10-24-2012 08:50 AM

Finally got one!

Went with Newegg cause of my shoprunner.

fiveofakind 10-24-2012 09:27 AM

I got one with blues on a previous FP deal and it was DOA. Ended up getting a Cooler Master instead which has worked flawlessly.

lilrabbit129 10-24-2012 09:50 AM

Anyone know of something like this but in the "natural" configuration ( split at the middle, similar to the Logitech Comfort)? My wrists hate the regular layout for extended typing.

This will get the job done, but mine came in basically DOA with the W key not working. Also note that unlike Amazon policy, you need to pay return shipping (one way) to Newegg when you RMA. Given the pretty high chance of failure per the reviews, you may need to tack on $5 or so to the expected price.

Over on overclock.net, someone pointed out that a distributor made this comment [overclock.net] about 2012 batches having the updated connectors. Anecdotally, a friend of mine purchased this keyboard a few months back when Newegg was running a similar $64 deal and hasn't had any trouble with the connector. I also purchased a new MX brown version of this keyboard two months ago for use at work and I haven't needed to resolder that one.

Thanks for this! It's somewhat reassuring, and kind of makes me feel more at ease (even though I haven't had problems with mine for the past months I've had mine). At least I can get my brother to get one without too much worry.

Huh. Good enough for me! I was going to not buy it, but apparently this is quieter than browns [very important for wanting to use it at work, we have open cubicles ...] so I'll give it a shot. Thanks.
*edit*
For some reason it can't be shipped to illinois. Oh, well ...

Only second hand and mostly for old ALPS keyboards. You would need to go to specialized forums or ebay for such items and look through the classifieds. If you want a Cherry MX board though, you're better off spending the extra $15.00-20.00 and buying a brand new Rosewill or CoolerMaster Quickfire Rapids (Blues, Browns, Blacks). They are both awesome keyboards and pay for themselves.

Arcoril 10-25-2012 02:20 PM

Just a heads up that the 20% discount is now active for the MX blue version with free shipping [newegg.com]. It's $5 more than the red, but it comes with a gaming mouse instead of the USB speakers.
