Hello All,

I bought this and created a Win XP USB install drive using WinToFlash. When I turn it on and select the first time install option, it just freezes at Windows is checking your system or something like that. Anyone encountered this? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Graphics performance is very good compared to first generation i3/i5/

My kids are using an old Foxconn FOXCONN NT-510 (Intel Atom D510 CPU and Intel GMA 3150 graphics), but they are constantly complaining about performance. Would this be any better? Obviously the graphics are, but not sure about the cpu

You're right. The Intel GMA 3150 is very week and not optimal for playing or streaming HD media (or playing games). The CPU in the E-350 is barely faster on average than the Atom, but there are certain applications that can take advantage of the faster AMD graphics to boost performance. What are your kids using the current Atom system to do?

Either way, the main benefits of an Atom or Fusion system are the low power usage and small size. If neither of those features are important to you or you're kids, you might be better off spending a little more on a Sandy or Ivy Bridge dual-core Celeron based system. The G530 is a very popular low end chip for general use. Throw in a $15 AR budget GPU (HD 5450/6450 or Nvidia GT 520) and you'll have a much more powerful system for only ~$100 more than this one.

Also, keep on eye on the Lenovo threads where you can often find refurb/scratch & dent systems with Celeron/Pentium/i3 chips for between $100-$200. Keep in mind that despite being "used", those are complete systems with a HDD and memory and OS which this deal skips.

Awesome. Thanks for the heads up! I almost ordered yesterday at work when a free external CD/DVD drive was bundled but decided to wait so that i can use a 5% cashback credit card that i left at home. By the time i got home, the free CD/DVD drive was OOS... so being the cheapskate that i am, i decided not to order since i missed out on the freebie.

I'd rather have the free SSD (plus $10 MIR) instead! :)

chefjw 10-24-2012 02:09 PM

Not sure why but I grabbed one.

webjock 10-24-2012 02:24 PM

It is now $110 (after rebate $10) with a 64GB OCZ SSD.

In for one. What the heck, I have extra ram lying around.

chow1668 10-24-2012 03:06 PM

bought one and picking it up tonight, Thanks!!

ek9cv5 10-24-2012 03:25 PM

So what is needed to complete this barebone. ram and os?

Atom D510 platform is about the same CPU wise as the A45. What in particular are your kids complaining about?

Nettop yes, HTPC no.

How would this work with Plex? As a client not a server.

I have one running fine as an htpc (been going for a couple years now). It's got a 500GB HD though instead of the 64GB SSD that this comes with. Most of my media streams from my server anyway.

between the rebate and the ssd, its taking all my willpower not to get a couple.

Ram + HDD

I don't understand why people cannot run a HTPC set up with this. I have an old Dell Zino 400 (1.6 single core) and it streams 1080p over the network without any issues.
Set this up correctly and you won't have any problems.

I'm trying to decide if this enough for a MAME build. Would like to use at least an i3 3225 but this price is too tempting.

I used to run MAME on an 800MHz Celeron, but that was old-school stuff. Nothing NES or newer, so take that for what it's worth.

thanks..
since a SSD is included, all is needed is RAM?
is it desktop RAM?
what is the processor in it? AMD E-350 APU (1.6GHz, dual core)? is this sufficient for streaming 1080p over the network?
can i install XP or windows server on this?

Lot of people use netflix and i am pretty certain the processor on this would lag playing netflix hd content. Sure anything which use GPU acceleration would run smoothly

It's still weak. A desktop Class AMD Fusion has a good blend of price and performance.

my e-350 does 1080p just fine over the network. Youtube 1080p, mkv 1080p, hd homerun prime HD all work flawlessy

genomax 10-24-2012 04:30 PM

true 1080p? i have a dual core zino 400 (athlon 3250iirc) and cant do more than 720p. do you have the dedicated gpu or hd 3000?

that said, this gpu is far superior.

also, mame totally depends on what you're trying to run. you should be fine for most games.

LOL you have a lot to learn. AMD E-350 can handle 1080p without any problems. I have setup a few of these for family and friends and they are able to play blu-ray movies without a hitch. So use it as a htpc for streaming or a blu ray player is feasible.

davucini 10-24-2012 04:37 PM

i have the newer one with the e450, after a fresh windows 7 install and some optimization to run just the essential services, i use it as a htpc that plays 1080p just fine, even hooked it up to my usb hauppauge cablecard tuner and i have no problem recording 2 streams and playing recorded media all at once.

kcaj32 10-24-2012 04:37 PM

Will this do 3D Bluray?
I want to replace my power hogging HTPC with something small.
I watch Comcast HD using HD Homerun Prime and windows media center. And I play 3d blurays using powerdvd.

I currently have amd phenom II x3 720.
Graphics card is ATI 6450 (3d capable).

RussellJohnson 10-24-2012 04:38 PM

I want to get one, but not sure what it's strong enough can use this for.

RussellJohnson 10-24-2012 04:40 PM

it has the HD3000.
8-10g 1080p torrent files play just fine here.

I want other emulators too, the Hyperspin frontend is already CPU intensive.

Interesting. I wonder why mine doesn't work. I've changed my native windows resolution to 720p because watching TV at 1080p wouldn't cut it. Maybe it can handle native 1080p but can't upscale 720p content to 1080 without skipping. That'd make some semblance of sense.

Have you tried using MaLa [malafe.net] instead of Hyperspin? Need to use command line Mame, though.

Have to resist. I had a system based on E-350 CPU and it was a total fail :( Could force it to pass-throu AC-3/DD/DTS sound to my receiver. It was always been converted to PCM. Tried different drivers, codecs, operating system - always got PCM on my receiver (bye-bye 7.1 channel audio)

I was disappointed by my E-350 system too. It can't play Netflix HD and it bottlenecks an SSD (I didn't even know this was possible).

Use DXVA :) Start by installing ffdshow tryout, which is free, and enable DXVA. Or use XBMC that has it by default.

I use this with an HDHomerun Prime and it works wonderfully.

webjock 10-24-2012 05:16 PM

For anyone considering this. This isn't going to be some sort of HTPC screamer.
I have (and owned) quite a few E-350 machines in various configurations (net-tops/laptops like Thinkpad X120e,etc).
This is however, going to be a good general purpose computer. It will play 720p video in Linux. With optimize video in Windows, it will probably play higher quality.

The thing it has going for it is USB 3, Gigabit and Wifi. Basically, you can make this into a great fileserver.
A Proxy/Wifi security gateway firewall like untangle. Or general dickering around with Linux distros.

The SSD is a added bonus. All you need is a laptop sodimm.

This will be a perfectly fine net-top.

If you don't want to play with Linux, get yourself a free Windows Server license in this thread.. (I did. I got 5 free legit license)
And run yourself a Windows Server off it.

See, that's the problem. It can do 1080p mkv and 1080p youtube, but there is absolutely no headroom. What this means is that, if there anything else that "pops up" in the background, you'll get a glitch. While that is acceptable for some, it's not acceptable to me or a number of other people.

christillman 10-24-2012 05:19 PM

Are the LEDs very bright on this? I have a lot of movies I like to watch in my bedroom with the lights turned off. I watch it for maybe about 5 minutes, and then usually fall asleep. But then I usually wake up wanting to watch more, again for another 5 minutes.

Also, I have over 1000 videos (each about a few hundred megs and in 720p, 1080p) on my external hard drive. Will this stutter while watching those movies? Will this be able to switch from movie to movie fast (in case one movie gets boring) or does it have to buffer and crap?

Been curious about these, and at $120 with a cheap 64GB SSD to throw into my DAW on top of the existing two for samples, this might be perfect for video in the bedroom where I'm setting up my Take 5 Classic set from earlier this week and my Optoma HD66. With the Take 5 at standard sale price of $150, this running as an HTPC streaming content from my server for $120, its just been too hard to say no, and considering I didn't really intend to have any sort of TV/Projector in my apartments bedroom at all I'm prettty pleased. Thanks OP.

Xplic1T 10-24-2012 05:29 PM

I was looking at getting a G-box Dyno but the only ones that seem to be around are though ebay at around the same price. This has 4x the power and 4x the ram.

How does XMBCbuntu run on this ? I want 1080p/720p streaming and playing, via wifi, and netflix if possible (one of the reasons i dont want to run openelec.

threeclaws 10-24-2012 05:29 PM

I really want to pull the trigger (this + openelec would make a nice media stream) but it just doesn't have the power for netflix and I don't want to lose that from my current box (boxee box.)

If netflix isn't important though, and you want a cheap/quiet/efficient media streamer this is a good deal.

Streaming 40mbps (high quality 1080p) is going to be iffy over wifi no matter what box you have.

Also no hardware acceleration in silverlight = no netflix HD on this box, also no silverlight for linux means you'll have to depend on windows.

marinemerchant 10-24-2012 05:43 PM

This thing looks like a Jack of most (not all) trades, master of none. Media players are cheaper. If you want to browse the internet on your TV when you're not watching movies... can't the Android USB stick thing do that and play 1080i content flawlessly for cheaper?

If you have a PS3 or media player already I don't know if this Foxconn warrants a purchase. I heard XBox was getting a browser, if it hasn't already...I haven't been on mine in 3+ months.

If you're going to be watching 720p or 1080i content on an HTPC make sure it has the horsepower to multi-task if stuff starts running in the background. Stuttering movie watching ruins the movie watching experience.

Not exactly. GPU only does the back end vector manipulation; a lot of work is still done by CPU. That's why most atoms still can't do 1080p well even though their GPU has the same HD acceleration as the A45.
A45 can do h.264, VC1, and xvid/ DIVX 1080p when GPU takes the load, but there is no real headroom which mean that there better be NOTHING happening besides that to occupy CPU.

That version is Intel video, so not good for a HTPC. The intel ATOM systems should have NVIDIA ION to run a as HTPC. Bad deal for that link you sent if you're goal is to use it as HTPC.

Why would there be? And there are plenty of reports of all of the CPUs you listed running 1080p at under 50% CPU. Which is plenty of headroom.

"A lot" really isn't much at all. The GPU is doing all of the difficult work pushing pixels.

If you can't offload to GPU, you're correct -- the CPU isn't enough.

I'm using the Ceton Quad tuner and WMC and it plays fine. If it's a bit choppy in WMC then go into your video/display properties and change the refresh rate within Windows. Stupid trick, but it helped my stuttering problems. I think I changed it to 59 or 60hz.

Foxconn CEO. Gou or something. An infamous racist. Shoud there be an ethical consideration even for slickdealers? I don't know but I ain't buying Foxconn unless it is really really cheap. This just falls short on such a criterion. The SSD is worth about 25 dollars or will be so by BF. That means the ITX setup is about 85 dollars. A good deal but not an earth-shaking one. If you don't need it right away wait till BF.

I have E-350 and it is slightly more powerful than Atom D510 and D525. It can do most multimedia fine but cannot do much else.

A question for people who installed openelec and this barebone system.

1) Can you configure this device to boot off from the sd card slot? If so, can you install a hard drive with all your media on it?

Are you using a wireless connection. I have had a it get choppy or have artifacts over a wireless connection. I had used an atom 330 before and ran it with an HDhomerun, however, it was only a single tuner (The old blue one). So I can't speak to recording while watching TV.

Can we all collectively agree that we will burn down the next SD'ers house who tells us to wait for BF? Shut the fark up already about BF, I've been hearing that for 4 farking months now. Do some of you cheap bastards seriously only buy nice shit on one day of the year? WE GET IT ALREADY!!!!

I'm praying to every conceivable god out there that no computer components go on sale on BF so people will stop telling everyone else to wait for prices on SSDs to drop.

My Foxconn Intel Atom in same case is noisy...would be too noisy personally for an HTPC if this Foxconn is of same noise level. I also have a Zotac Intel Atom that's much quieter, but case is larger than the Foxconn.

What is the average price for prebuilt mini pc's like this that are good enough for 1080p mkv's ? I had no idea they are this cheap. I was planning on building my own, but have no interested anymore if they are around this price.

Thanks.

I use a Bluetooth dongle and the PS3 remote. You can program the keys how you see fit with the application driver. Then run the the program when windows starts up.

I got a few of these mini foxconn systems.
from Atom + nvidia platform (gets hot) to the E-350 platform.

two issues with all the systems I had.
1) Fan on these units are "loud" and noticable when you have it on.
2) slow performance ... (more of a platform/cpu thing than Foxconn)

yes Amd e-350 is faster than the crap atoms but for regular use you would still notice how slow it is compared to even an older Pentium D or intel Dual core Exxx series dual core CPU from 4 or 5 years ago.

Unless you HAVE to have such a small unit. I would suggest getting something that have a better CPU. I have sold all of theses units (not that I used them in the first place just was such a good deal at SD for them at the time)

I finally settled on a Shuttle XH61 barebone kit from a month ago from newegg ($180 for barebone kit + intel G620 CPU) and
that seems the best compromise between
- noise level
- physical size
- cpu and system performance
- price (alittle high u can say but it's a quality kit)
- expandability. (2.5" hd slot/slim dvdrw slot/2x ram slot) 4x SATA port + power connector

SDRebel 10-24-2012 08:08 PM

anyone...is something like this good enough to run media center for a HD homerun prime with live tv watching?
thanks in advance

It's not the content that is choppy, once the channel loads it works fine, but navigating the guide is horrific, maybe I need to reformat, I am using an 100mb ethernet powerline adapter, XBMC works well.

Yes. This is basically the case, motherboard, processor and an SSD hard drive. You'll need to add RAM and an OS.

A barebone system is made of
Case
PSU
Motherboard
and other small accessaries like power cord.

In this case a CPU and an SSD are included as extras.

For everyone saying this will not a good htpc you are complete idiots. You don't know anything about computers so you should keep your mouth shut. This is the only intelligent anti-htpc use post. It will not do madvr at 1080p. If you don't know what madvr is don't worry about it, you would would never figure out how to set it up anyway.

If you want a great htpc this will fit the bill nicely for 99.9% of you. If you want a simple "Boxie Box" like experience where you don't see Linux, except with XBMC instead of Boxee then this, a stick of laptop RAM and OpenELEC (it's free) is all you need. Think of it in your head as an XBMC operating system with no technical knowledge needed. If you don't understand what I'm talking about go here http://xbmc.org/ OpenELEC has a build specifically for this APU.

For all the people who think this is not good for HTPC use read a web page once in a while.

This is a possible exception to the rule. Anime can be tricky because the Japanese are starting to encode anime in 10 bit. The dxva acceleration will not be able to handle anything encoded in 10 bit. I have not come across anything 10 bit encoded but I don't download a lot of anime. I personally encoded a Blu-ray in 10 bit and tested it on this APU and it will not play at 1080p.

You've got to be kiddin' about the processor, right? The SSD is sweet, agreed, but the processor is half as fast as my 4 year old AMD 4400+. What's next - something that will run DOS 4.01? Sometimes it's too expensive to be too cheap.

Are you confused? This is NOT a $1,000 gaming machine with an AMD E-350, this is a $110 net-top with a free SSD. It is a great deal.

WOW! Did my AMD 4400+ ever cost $1k? I think not. Your argument is similar to saying: "Are you profused? This ain't a 2 mill Bugatti Veyron." Sure, it ain't, but you also shouldn't be driving a Jugo, at any price. Remember the Corsair? Unsafe at any speed. This package is unsuitable at any price.

LOL! Radeon 9800 even cannot decode 720P!
not mention HDMI, 1080p , did I ?
e-350's windows 7 rate index is 3x higher than my AMD x2 5600+, and only consumes 1/3 electricity

No. No AMD CPU ever cost $1k. Keywords: Gaming machine(whole system)

Hm, what they once told people, that jerkong off turns you mentally feeble, is true after all... For that particular purpose, this is indeed a hot deal. Perhaps it comes with a sticker: "pron approved." Instead of giving thumbs up, you should give a d... up. Well done, mate.

Yes, and it works really well with the latest PVR branch. I use it as my main system for the house and the performance is really great given the price and size. I'm having a bit of trouble getting Sickbeard and TVheadend to work properly but that's related to my abilities not Openelec.

I'm tempted to order a second one as well. If you ask me, this is a SUPER SUPER SICK deal.

I paid $160 for the NTA-350 here [newegg.com] not too long ago (back in March) and it didn't come with a free SSD. I can't believe this is $110 AR and with a nice SSD.

How come the black one is ~$65 more?? The specs look the same.

I wish the black one was cheaper as well, but you won't find me complaining, haha. I actually asked Newegg if they would substitute the black one last night when this one went out of stock but they said no.

Don't quite understand how HTPC/XBMC builds work, most of them seem to have the same specs as this barebone kit. If HTPC are used to stream/play bluray and 1080p videos all day, how do these onboard video cards handle the frames? I have an old nvidia PCI AGP video card and I can barely play video games on it let alone for extended periods of time. Can someone explain to this noob (me)

Many people recycle their old computers into media centers. There are lots of free softwares and tutorials out there.xbox media center is one of the popular ones. Once you have your media center setup with internet connection. You can stream your video library to your HTPC or any other pc in your house.

There are PCI vidoe cards that has 1080 resolution output, you'll have to do some research to see if your pc can handle the upgrade.

Thanks for the reply but I wasn't wondering how to go about building one, I was wondering how they are able to handle 1080p video all day and be used for media purposes when my older desktop (stronger build) cannot even handle it. Is there something about how HTPC programs decode video that do not put stress on the video cards or is my desktop just so old that it cannot even compare to these weak barebone kits. For example, how do Raspberry Pis handle the same playback stronger than old pentium 4 desktops with AGP video cards
