http://www.ebay.com/itm/Refurbish...3a7b479243

i am posting this because a number of people said they were looking for this deal at $85.

i just saw it appear on eBay.com as a new auction, then immediately posted to Slickdeals.

So i posted it, my very first post ever. i hope it helps people out there.

Also, the Sony.com website has these for $160, and Cowboom, etc sites are selling these used, missing remotes, other bits for $119.

Product Features:

Google TV brings TV and Internet together, and seamlessly searches your device, the entire web & apps

Blu-ray Disc playback capability, along with DVDs, CDs, and digital files via USB or network devices

Intel Atom Processor (1.66GHz) for world-class HD video, audio, and advanced graphics

Surf the web while watching TV using Dual View, stay up to date with an upgradeable OS

It has full HD, 24fps playback. Upconversion of lower-resolution sources and 3D compatible.

gibsonbass 10-30-2012 03:53 PM

Its a solid deal for that price. 3d bluray and web browser with flash. Bluray functionality is not easy to navigate but web browser is good. I watched espn3 most of the time on chrome web browser. Apps are limited though. For $85 I am tempted to buy one more for bed room tv. If you have iphone or ipad, you can buy Airtight app for $1 to stream picture and medi but it does not support mirroring

Agreed with @gibsonbass, i think for the features, this is hard to beat at this price, shipped. Even with California tax, the total is $91.

baxao1 10-30-2012 04:08 PM

This one will be sold out in last then 30 few minutes. From the last two times that Sony sold this unit on ebay, they only had around 15-16 items.

He copied the title on the ebay listing from sony. This is good since I may be able to request Sony paying for the return shipping if I change my mind and want to return it.

I knew I should have held out on the Panasonic one I bought for the same price with the worthless smart TV.. oh well, that one will move to a less desirable location.

arribasn 10-30-2012 04:36 PM

I'd be all over this except most networks block streaming shows on Google TV

NHxj4x4 10-30-2012 04:37 PM

Own it, Love it. Not for the Apple Crowd types, but with aVia, GTVBox, PlayOn, Netflix and Chrome this is a VERY VERY solid Google TV device. The bulk of the negative Amazon reviews are from people that shouldn't buy anything past a Roku. This is NOT a Roku, this is Digital Integration.

Arrow34 10-30-2012 04:40 PM

In for one, I am curious if this is better than the sony media streamer v2

Crartech 10-30-2012 04:43 PM

Ah, I see it doesn't have an Amazon Instant video app, dealbreker for me. Since I already blu-ray player that has the Samsung Smart Hub.

It doest have amazon video app but it will direct you to browser based amazon video rather than app based.

remlover 10-30-2012 04:52 PM

This is a great deal. I have 2 Logitech revues and they are great for streaming. I have been hoping the Panasonic blu-ray would come down in price and it did.

Definitely download Plex from the app store. I think it's only .99 cents. It makes your movie collection saved on your computer look professional.

Adding a blu ray to this player is great. The best part is that it will run off the same HDMI as your cable. So you won't have to change inputs to watch a movie. It looks like it has a smaller keypad which is even better because the logitech revue keyboards can get a little bulky.

SlikRick 10-30-2012 04:57 PM

quick question.. Is it possible to connect an external drive? And how flexible is Google TV at playing various video formats like avi, mpeg, mki etc.

I bought this and I think this is a great deal! I built a htpc for my parents who basically use it for web browsing and youtube. I think this will be a very good replacement, considering it will replace htpc AND blu-ray player. My only concern is about the remote. It seems if it breaks, the replacement remote is as expensive as the cost of this unit (at this price).

You can hook up an external HD or thumb drive and it has no problem reading and playing it. I have a lot of different formatted videos and it has played them all for me. Now there might be some files structures you have, that I dont, but in general I have never had an issue with things I throw at it.

Don't worry about the quality of the controller. They are built really solid.

Damn. I missed this barely, but the good thing is that earlier today I just bought a Sony NSZ-GS7. I really wanted the built-in blu-ray but my #1 purpose was to run Plex off this thing from my NAS. The GS7 is faster and I knew for sure that it supported a myriad of files including avi (wasn't sure with the GT1). And there wasn't a deal for this player...

Correct. There is actually an Amazon back end app that allows you to watch instant video in HD. However, as stated above, you'll have to use the web browser to login and choose pick your video.

What a day! Just an hour ago, I was in BB and since they r all clearanced out, my local store had only an open box left, trashed out condition and without remote at 89.99. I tried negotiating it around 40 bucks but they won't and I left without purchasing it. Happily come home and see this deal posted, quickly grabbed it before it went fp. It wouldn't have lasted for long anyways which is apparent now. thanks op!!! You just heard my mind asking for a good deal on this gadget!

Look forward to receiving it now!

Dear (Ebayer),

About your order Tuesday for the Refurbished Sony Home Theater Blu-ray Disc Player w/ Google TV Sony on eBay-

As sometimes happens when Slick Deals picks up on a special promotion the pace of sales is faster than the communication between the systems tracking inventory. That's what happened on Tuesday. When the notice went up on Slick Deals we sold out within an hour and ended up overselling. Because of this we will need to cancel your order and refund you money immediately.

We apologize for the inconvenience, and hope, as an experienced Slick Dealer, you understand.

I just don't think Sony is used to offering slickdeals. Seriously though, it is either Sony's inventory system or eBay that caused the over sale. They should at least offer to hold the order until they get more in stock.

Agree. Inventory showed 76 remaining when I got a confirmation. They should give those of us who got our orders canceled first stab at the next batch. Won't happen of course.

Mine was shipped, I am going to receive on Monday... Probably..

Update. Nevermind, it actually arrived today(saturday 11/3) So far liking the ui and the controller, nice that it has an ir blaster, but would prefer if the controller didnt have to use an ir blaster to also control the receiver. If this thing had native hulu support, this would be an amazing unit, but without it, it is a great unit. I am going to look into hacking it or figuring a way to get hulu on it.

Root it. Grab 4 USB drives and head over to GTVHacker for the guide. The binaries you'd be installing for root include a modified Flash binary which Hulu (and most other content providers) doesn't block.

If you press the home button, is there a notification on the button right screen that lets you know that an external HD has been connected (or synced)?

Go into the Media player. There should be a settings. Click media sources. Does your HD show up?

I'm using these instructions based off the logitech revue, but I'm sure they are quite similar across platform.

Apparently Sony sold 15 of them in their ebay store on 11/20. Is there not a way to have ebay send you a text or something when something goes live? I know the ebay app will send an alert if you are outbid, but not much else.

These are the completed listings sorted by "ending soonest"

I'll just have to watch the Sony ebay store like a hawk I guess. Otherwise some used ones are selling for about $150+. Still not a bad deal.

I haven't seen any others come up in Sony's ebay store, but they are back on sale from Sony's website for $159
http://store.sony.com/p/NSZ-GT1/e...ifications

This might mean that since they have a new batch of refurbs, that the ebay store will sell a few again.
I would probably even buy at $159 with my previous enthusiasm about the player, but that has died down since I discovered mini pc's with HDMI out that run android jelly bean, like the MK808. I may get a cheap blu ray player, and then the MK808.

I did end up buying a NSZ-GT1 off ebay for $70, but it is the unit only, NO power cable, remote, nothing. I just received it last night, with terrible packaging during shipping. I haven't tried it yet, as I ordered a universal AC power adapter (that hopefully works), and that comes in today. Tonight I will decide if I'll keep the NSZ-GT1, or sell it again. I also ordered a Logitech K700 keyboard that hopefully works with it. In a review for the K400 keyboard, someone said they used it for the NSZ-GT1 and it worked well, so the K700 should work. I'll report back.

Agreed, I tried it last night. Nothing extra was necessary, I just plugged in the dongle after the player booted up, and it started working. It was a little weird during setup because it wanted me to "pair" the sony remote by pressing function + Enter, but that didn't seem to do anything when I did it on the K700. But I just pressed a few buttons one at a time (not mashing around) and I think pressing escape moved me forward in the setup process.

One other small issue during setup was when it asked me for my tv model, and when I chose LG, it didn't work. I just skipped the step (even though it told me certain things wouldn't work if I skipped the step), and everything seems to work just fine.

As far as functionality of the unit, I haven't played with it enough to say much. This is my first blu ray player, so we watched the latest Spiderman movie, and watched a few Youtube vids, but that's about it. I did a couple of searches in the app store, and confirmed it is limited.

I purchased the iMito MX1 and will play with that this weekend. If it works well, I'm assuming it will render anything "smart" about the NSZ-GT1 to be useless. I'll have to decide if I want to just keep it as a blu ray player, or sell it and just get a plane jane player.

If you do plan on keeping the device, I would suggest rooting it to be able to run modified Flash binaries (for much web content) and install software from third party sources (Sony removed this option for some reason in an update).

One work-around for the limited app-store is to manually install APK's (applications will only appear in Play Market if they were specifically marked to not require a touch screen though a few work at least somewhat well despite this). Note though this will not work on pretty much any GL-intensive application (and obviously applications which rely upon hardware the NSZ-GT1 lacks such as a camera or microphone) as most will not have x86 compatible binaries available.

I started looking into how to root it before I found out about these mini android sticks. I don't have any experience doing that sort of thing, but I would be willing to spend the time to read about it if the benefits vs. risks made sense to me. Also it depends on if there were another device that would offer the same benefits without having to screw around with it, or if the risks were less. Bricking a device that would also render the blu ray player useless would suck more I feel like.

The primary benefits of rooting would be installation of applications from third party sources (E.g. Amazon or APKs from other devices) and viewing of otherwise blocked content (e.g. Hulu and online content from Fox, NBC, Viacom, etc. which is what I mainly use mine for along with Plex). The risks are the usual which be voided warranty, a bricked device, thermonuclear war, and rise of the undead. That said the rooting process is a bit more complicated than the average Android device in that you need ~4 USB drives sitting around.

That said, if you don't care for the "Smart" functions and don't use the Google TV overlay then it may be better to just go with a dedicated Blu-ray player due to the lack of any real benefit and the lack of HDMI 1.4.

I would love to have full streaming capabilities from websites, like some of the ones you mentioned. I did watch a youtube video of a guy showing the 4 usb drive rooting method. Definitely doable to me, but after I found out about the android sticks, I think it seems silly to go through that. I'd rather update the ROM on a stick that allows it than push a square object through a round hole
Oh well who knows, I haven't even tried the iMito MX1 yet.

Good luck with the iMito MX1. It would be good to hear how it works for you. The NSZ-GT1's hardware has aged and it won't be receiving ICS/Jellybean so it would be nice to see how the newer Android USB drives compare in features and usability (though these technically won't be receiving Google TV support).
