BoxWave is an established business that has been around for some time. Infinitely more reputable than those who are selling "clone" cables on eBay, who are being shut down by Apple on a daily basis.

Apparently, they are also making a BLACK version of this cable, but only available for pre-order on their site.

Boxwave Lightning charge and sync cable linky [boxwave.com] (they sell for $14.95)

Just got my iphone today and was wondering how many days before I lose the cable and have to run around looking to buy a replacement

slackerace 11-02-2012 08:12 PM

In for 2. If they do not work, Amazon will refund money. Boxwave guarantees they will sync and charge.

iyg 11-02-2012 08:29 PM

$8.95 for a simple cable. WTF!!!
I bet this costs way less than a HDMI cable.

fstop 11-02-2012 08:30 PM

I'm willing to give this a try. Thanks OP, got the car charger combo.

Superorb 11-02-2012 08:31 PM

This is hilarious. All the Apple sheep will now have to go and buy yet ANOTHER overpriced cable from Apple while the rest of the world uses USB for all their devices. Crazy that Apple has brought up an entire generation of suckers.

The active circuitry is mostly for detecting non-genuine Apple cables, with the bonus side effect of detecting the cables position upon insertion.

Buyer beware.

Wonder what a fandroid is doing on an iPhone thread

buddybd 11-02-2012 08:43 PM

I don't understand why Apple-haters feel OBLIGATED to post in a thread clearly directed towards Apple devices.

Be happy with whatever you buy, no one has the right to question what other people do with THEIR money. If people feel the purchase is worthwhile then so be it, cherish what you have and let others do the same as well.

Is that how you got to be a Grand Master with 13 thousand some posts . . . by insulting others?

papo512 11-02-2012 08:44 PM

Doesn't look good that they have a picture of an Iphone 4 with and iphone 5 charger on it

xtwister161 11-02-2012 08:49 PM

I would say wait 2 more week and price will come down much more. Ebay sellers are just now getting these this week.

I think this is a good price. I know someone who deals in accessories and is getting a shipment of these from china. his price is around $8 for each piece.

Will gamble and return if it doesn't work. Definitely needed a second cable for car as the GPS drains the battery so quickly.

I've found some for about $7 shipped, BUT that doesn't have any real guarantees. This one seems a bit more worth it as Amazon will back you up even if the mfg doesn't.

BoomSchtick 11-02-2012 09:39 PM

I need a couple. I'll risk it...

nathanralph 11-02-2012 10:11 PM

Just bought 10. Hope they work.

wowotoe 11-02-2012 11:26 PM

If this one has Amazon Prime and allows free return for defect, I'll get one. But now, I'll stick with genuine Apple accessories.

nathanralph 11-02-2012 11:58 PM

It's not amazon prime.

Another note - I ordered only the cable, not the car charger. And the price was $8.95 each. But...my order confirmation email from Amazon says this:

Delivery estimate: Nov. 15, 2012 - Nov. 19, 2012
"BoxWave USB Lightning Cable + Car Charger Bundle for All Apple Devices with New Apple Lightning Connector - Supports Apple iPhone 5, iPad 4, iPad mini"

DKTVPN 11-03-2012 12:09 AM

Will this damage my iphone 5? If so, Square Trade will replace/repair or not?

Seylerc 11-03-2012 12:16 AM

Great, another proprietary connector! Nice going Apple!

Wasn't it crap like this that cause the European Union to force retailers to come to a common standard (micro USB)?

lastmiracle 11-03-2012 12:20 AM

1 Attachment(s)
I hope this clarifies things up a bit; not done by me. (I've had enough non-Apple devices to be annoyed at all the different cables out there over the years, even within the same brand)

slackerace 11-03-2012 12:28 AM

Not complaining about the change- I like the new configuration. What I do not like, is shelling out $300 for a phone, and then having to shell out over $70 for adapters for my accessories. It is the cost.

nrq007 11-03-2012 12:52 AM

I have placed the order for this one but also thinking to buy the Genuine Apple Lightning to Micro USB adapter which APPLE is selling in europe. Its on ebay for around $45 shipped from UK.. so I'll wait and see if the price goes down for this adapter.

dylanursula 11-03-2012 06:15 AM

My experience with Boxwave is that they generally never stand by their products. I had a stylus tip that was faulty and they flat out refused to replace it.

house kitten 11-03-2012 06:17 AM

I had a boxware cable that I bought to use with itouch gen 3. Did not work.

OfficerCamp 11-03-2012 06:48 AM

I think I'm going to wait for some reviews. Already ponied up $19 for an apple brand cable. Should be ok with 2 for now. Anybody think there's any issue with damage to the phone with aftermarket cables? I know once manufacturers got in the swing of things with the old 30 pin cables they were very reliable.

fabulosity 11-03-2012 07:00 AM

aww man.. 2 weeks i couldn't hold out any more and bought one from Apple for the car. Guess I'll get this one and leave it at the office.. I am not one to be taking the same one all around. Thanks for posting.

Right. Where do you see one for $3?

Bill McNeal 11-03-2012 10:56 AM

This is the cheapest I could find on eBay http://bit.ly/SDFmAO
$9.21 buy it now with free shipping. Seller has good feedback. I'm gonna wait til there are cheaper cables. I think.

Daekwan 11-03-2012 10:56 AM

What the hell. I bought one for $9 bucks. I only bought 1 because Im skeptical if it works/charges/syncs and have also noticed the build quality of cheap cables suck compared to the OEM Apple cables. If the 1 I receive works out well.. I might buy 2 or 3 more.

Stopping by the Apple store to pick up a couple was already on my list of weekend errands. As I'd like to eventually have 3 of these lightning to USB cables. 1 for the house, 1 for the car, 1 for work/luggage.

What? I'm pretty certain there would be celebration if Apple moved to micro-USB which is proprietary to no brand.

milzinga 11-03-2012 12:04 PM

Good deal, much better priced than Apples cable. It's a shame that Apple decided to use a proprietary cable though instead of sticking with an industry standard. I'd understand it more if they at least put USB 3.0 or the thunderbolt cable. Oh well...

chi 11-03-2012 12:14 PM

In stock on November 9, 2012.

Great price, but I wouldn't put money down on pre-orders especially for the lightning cable that has some kind of embedded chip. While I've seen news articles that they've been cracked, I haven't seen anybody on macrumors.com forums confirm that they bought a generic cable that actually works.

the micro-usb to lightning adapter is interesting item to have since you would theoretically need only 1 cable for apple/micro-usb devices.

it just goes to show that they could have very well used a micro-usb connector in the iphone 5.

So here's the deal. A long time ago when I had an iPhone 3G, I wanted to have the ability to store video and watch that video on any old tv. I looked at Apple's RCA adapter and they wanted $40 bucks. On eBay they were $3. So, I got the $3 version.

Two weeks later, I get my cable in, test it out, everything works perfect. I'm using it fairly frequently, then an update for the iPhone3G comes out. I upgrade and then when I connected the cable I got, "This Accessory Is Not Made To Work With iPhone".

There are third-party cables available but they will still run you a bit of money, and while cheap unlicensed Chinese ones do exist, they often only work until the next firmware upgrade (when Apple has found a workaround for the fake chips).
Again, I wasn't guaranteeing you would run into problems. I'm only saying "Buyer Beware" Boxwave can be as credible as any business, I just find it hard to believe Apple would let another company undercut them on their own proprietary cables. Literally, Apple is making a 2000-2500% profit margin on the lightning connector and they are SOLD OUT. Apple loves money. I find it hard to believe they would allow a third party to undercut them by half price AND licensing the cable cheap enough that Boxwave can make a profit on it.

Also, here is an article showing the authentication chip on authentic Lightning cables:

Better to just get the Apple one.

Save you the headache down the road.

Lightning end of the cable is a bit stiff in my Mini, but it does sync and charge fine.

Cable is now $9.45 shipped. Going for $6.59 shipped on ebay. Can't wait till these prices drop further!

got mine. charges and syncs fine. the only thing i noticed is that the fit is a bit tight and you actually need to push it in with a little force ... not sure how this is going to affect the phone's connector slot in the long term.
