I think it was the Ultimate version that was $60, and although I'm not sure what the difference is, I think that might make the ultimate deal a better one. Rep for posting, though!

yellowlt4 11-06-2012 10:31 AM

Excellent price for a full size mechanical keyboard. If I needed another I would be in for 1, thanks OP.

The Ultimate is essentially the same board plus itsback lite and I have never seen a new Ultimate drop below $80.

It also has usb hub and audio ports I believe.

This has to be close to the lowest price ever, including the dell deals which have been in the 50s.

Don't need yet another mechanical keyboard but this price is great. Typing this on one of the mac version blackwidows and I've been very happy with the both blackwidows I've used. Quality on the two I have is perfect. I did mod with o-rings to lower the noise level.

lantzuh 11-06-2012 12:15 PM

Thanks, is this a good deal in relation to the cooler master brown one a few days ago i missed?

The other one made frontpage so thats only reason im asking

The Ultimate does have a USB, mic, and headphone port. Looking at mine now that I was lucky enough to find at Goodwill for $5. Thinking some 13yo got grounded and parents donated his keyboard. Awesome keyboard, and like how you can adjust the brightness of the led's on the keys.

rebelx 11-06-2012 12:25 PM

Darn, I just needed the backlit version. Don't care about the other ports. I'll wait.

Today I stumbled upon a BW Ultimate @ BB B&M for $78+tax. YMMV

mavericks3 11-06-2012 12:26 PM

Love mine. There is a lot of hate on this keyboard and I am glad I didn't listen to those reviews. Its very solid and well made. Yeah its a little loud, but what do you expect from cherry blue. I play all types of games and there is a FRACTIONAL disadvantage using this for FPS multiplayer. If you are super elite gamer nub smasher you might want to consider a cherry red. I, however, can't play any better or worse with this keyboard. I love this keyboard, I wish i had a need for another. Got it for close to this price about 5 months ago.

m00ky 11-06-2012 12:30 PM

Click click clickity click clickity click click.

bchengcnix 11-06-2012 12:31 PM

it doesnt suck because its loud, it sucks because the keys stop working a month after you get it

Browns require a bit more actuation force and do not make the loud "clicks" like the blues (this KB)

This Blackwidow is my first experience with mech keyboards and it took me a while to get used to it. In hindsight, I would pick up a mech with browns any day of the week over this one. Mainly because I type pointy-fingered and hit the keys hard. It is all based on preference.

Another tip: This thing is a fingerprint magnet. If that bothers you, stay away.

Excellent price on this board for sure though! Got mine for $70ish last Christmas.

jbonez21 11-06-2012 12:41 PM

All the people in the Gamer's Lounge swearing off Razer are probably in here buying this keyboard, hahahah

I purchased one of these from Amazon - and wish I hadn't. I definitely needed the illuminated keyboard. AND I don't know who the rocket scientist was that decided to put the keyboard shift characters UNDERNEATH the normal character, but it definitely different

You can probably use it as a standardkeyboard without installing the synapse drivers, but any special features or led customization and things like that will be locked out.

I passed by a local best buy today and i saw the ultimate version of this for $70.

LOL - I couldn't think of the right words at the time. Yes, keyboard has uppercase under the lower case

prankies 11-06-2012 03:17 PM

The Cherry Blues on this keyboard are pretty loud, but work very well for RTS style games. I am more of a shooter player myself, so I prefer Reds/Blacks. Cherry Blues create a tactile click as soon as they are pressed, while Reds/Blacks only make noise when they "bottom out" on the keyboard itself. Blues will likely annoy the crap out of anyone nearby, but they work very well for certain kinds of games (the audible and physical tactile response lets you be sure you hit the key).

I have not had a very good experience with Razer products, unfortunately. Their "gamer" marketing scheme seems to inflate their prices above their build quality.

Reviews for this keyboard are mixed, but at this price it's a nice entry level mechanical keyboard for the RTS gamers out there. I wouldn't expect it to last the 10+ years that many other mechanical keyboards can last, though.

The build quality on Razer products really isn't so hot, but the Cherry MX Blues are very nice for typing. Just keep in mind that if you have any roommates, they will HATE you for using this keyboard. Typing on Cherry Blues is almost hypnotic, though, and you can really get a rhythm going.

I think the Rosewill boards do have a better build quality (aside from some early models having an iffy USB plug that needed to be soldered after a while, but supposedly they have fixed that issue). The Rosewill boards themselves will have nicer keys and more solid construction, but they lack some of the bells and whistles of the Razer boards.

If you are ONLY looking for typing, I think you might be better served by a Rosewill. Choosing between Blues/Blacks/Reds is more difficult, as it is kind of a preference thing. Many typists enjoy the Blues, though. They're just really loud.

How would this compare to top non-mechanical keyboards like say, the Microsoft Sidewinder X4 which can be bought for $50?

I'm hesistant on pulling the trigger because of all these poor reviews about the bad QC and the durability. There just seems to be a lot of issues with it. I've never used a mechanical keyboard before so I won't miss anything if I don't get one. I just want a good keyboard for my house tho for gaming and typing.

mechanicals for reliability and durability.
mechanical switches have over 50 million keystroke lifespan
though the black widow's a hit/miss on that....

if you're fine with the X4, dont bother upgrading
this is really for those who want a cheap mechanical keyboard

i'd recommend a rosewill one actually next time they go on sale instead of this board frankly.
just more reliable.

Ok thanks. So if this mechanical keyboard isn't that sturdy then I guess that takes away a lot of pros of being a mechanical keyboard. I'm not in a rush for a keyboard, but it'd be nice to replace my failing 6 year old logitech keyboard. May wait out for Rosewill one then or go ahead and get that Sidewinder. Thx.

Blackwidow has been totally solid for me though I won't deny that others have had issues. In my personal experience I prefer the feel of the blackwidow to the rosewill boards. No need to wait though, rosewills are on sale now for ~$10 more.

Lots of people like the blues for gaming. Blackwidow also has media keys which can be nice and I like the wrist rest lip, I never use the macros.

I'd agree 100%. I bought this keyboard last time I saw it on SD, months ago. The keys are LOUD at first, but I've gotten used to them.

The keyboard does feel & look very nice, but if you've got a bunch of people around your computer, you may want to look at something quieter. People can hear me typing away with the door closed.

I can't confirm from my personal experience, I've never installed the software or assigned macros, but according to the faq on their site [razerzone.com], you should have all the functionality of the keyboard without using synapse and synapse does not require the user to be online as there are online and offline modes.

Im not sure how it works for the keyboard, but for their newer mice in order to gain full use of the product and customize the buttons, DPI, lighting etc you have to activate the mouse and log in to Synapse 2.0 and agree to the TOS.

Synapse 2.0 does have an offline and online mode, but its not something you can toggle yourself. It only goes into offline mode when it detects you dont have an internet connection, and the software reportedly locks up momentarily when transitioning back and forth.

I have the Ultimate version of this keyboard with the Blue LED backlight. I have been using it all year, and love it. I replaced my Lycosa and never looked back. It was different getting used to the clicky sound when typing, but i got used to it. Great looking, and great quality.

I highly recommend against buying this.

It is a garbage product. As far as mechanical keyboards are concerned, this is the worst. It has poor build quality and has many design flaws. The product also requires that you install their software which is essentially spyware.

I strongly disagree. It does not requires you to install their software (unless you want to use the macro keys).

I bought the Razer Black Widow from Amazon for 59.99 and so far i have no problems at all.
