This post can and should be edited by users like you :)

sold out
EDIT - for online only orders. Still available at some locations for in-store pickup.
EDIT 2 - now shows "Item is sold out online. Please check your local OfficeMax store for availability."

Also, you may want to try this:

I ordered with in-store pickup, printed this coupon [chtah.com], showed it to the manager when I picked up my order, he stated that they normally don't do this with online orders but made an exception and credited my card $15.

Price paid came to $79.99+$4.00 (Tax) - $15.00 coupon = $68.99 (incl. tax). Huge YMMV though.

Price has gone up to $139.99 online. I called my local B&M earlier to see if they would price match before the price went up and they would. There was only one available so I asked them to hold onto it for me until this evening when I could stop by and pick it up. He said that as long the site didn't say "Online Only" then he would price match. I printed out the site showing $79.99 and have attached a PDF showing this if anyone wants to try and fight the good fight :)

Does a 2TB 7200rpm drive in the 2.5-inch form factor exist? That would be killer.

Features
•Solid add-on storage for all your digital ¿les
•Stackable desktop design
•Smooth, textured body for solid good looks
•Fast USB 3.0 Interface
•AC Power Adapter
•3.5 inch External Hard Disk Drive

Hmmm... any coupons to sweeten the deal? I'm looking to stock a 4 bay NAS.

Tianlord 11-07-2012 08:53 AM

Just bought 2 of them. Good price.

dvdapex 11-07-2012 08:55 AM

From one of the NewEgg reviews: "I immediately tore it open and got the bare drive out to use internally. Please note that if you plan on doing that, it is near impossible to open it without damaging the case and will most likely void your warranty."

Darn. I was definately going to open these up, but I want the warranty.

shrirag 11-07-2012 08:55 AM

Can't find many reviews, only found this from amazon which is split 50/50 ... http://www.amazon.com/Touro-Deskt...B007IGCSRM

I'm on the hunt for a 1-2TB external, but would be willing to wait for BF.

4FewDollarsLess 11-07-2012 08:55 AM

In 4 1. 10X OP!

The_Doug 11-07-2012 08:56 AM

2.5" would be nice, but this is still the best price I've seen for 2TB in a while and I really do need an external drive.
EDIT: Now I finally got to use my $10 OfficeMax gift card from a cancellation they did last year. :)

Not as far as I know... the closest currently available is the 2TB WD Green that comes in a 2.5" format. Confusingly, it's 15mm high so does not fit most notebooks

As long as you can read the serial off the bare drive drive, you should be able to RMA it. You can find Hitachi's warranty check tool here: http://www.hgst.com/warranty/index_serial.do As you can see, all it requires is the serial!

shrirag 11-07-2012 09:02 AM

I'm thinking of pulling the trigger and returning in store worst case. I didn't find on their website if you could return online purchases in store? https://www.officemax.com/custome...nd_Returns

wazlo21 11-07-2012 09:05 AM

Might have to jump on this to use with my router since the crud-tastic Seagate doesn't work when hooked to a router via USB.

BoomSchtick 11-07-2012 09:10 AM

If you're thinking the bare drive will be under warranty, it won't, These are classified as OEM drives for warranty purposes, such as those packaged inside a new computer. Tear it apart, and you kill both the case and the drive warranty.

newhunter 11-07-2012 09:13 AM

lack of review on this. some mention about the disk is formatted with 512e advance format disk and only can be used with windows 7. Not sure what it means. but I guess you can always reformat the disk to FAT32 if you concern about compatibility.

Thanks

If you can do an in-store pick up you can try using this coupon.
http://slickdeals.net/f/5441900-O...8-B-M-YMMV

My brother went to an officemax yesterday and bought a floor mat for office chairs and it worked. Still YMMV.

EddieWoah 11-07-2012 09:22 AM

Anyone know if OM takes competitor coupons, specifically Staples?

TIA!

Or should I not bother?

Sorry, I've never ordered from OfficeMax so this may be a stupid question. How do you use coupons for in-store pickup items? I started the checkout process and don't see an option to pay for the purchase in the store.

I believe you just select in-store pick up and enter in your credit card. They won't charge until you actually picked it up. When you pick it up give them the coupon. If that does not work just say you don't want it.

Actually, from looking at the reviews, it appears that the USB3 connection / cable that's provided with the drive is often faulty. Also, external drives often have higher failure rates due to over heating. So, by de-casing it I would be less likely to require warranty service since the drives will be actively cooled and directly connected. That said, the actually warranty on the drive would be nice.

But, I suppose you need to satisfy your hockey interest somehow since there will be no NHL season this year.

All I know it is some staples coupon you can buy from ebay or get them in e/mail. I do not know that much.

I too would like to know about the staples coupon. I would definitely buy one if I can get that coupon along with the $5 off. Until then I am holding off for bare internal drives as I already have an enclosure, but no drives, yet.

I called my local B&M earlier to see if they would price match before the price went up and they would. There was only one available so I asked them to hold onto it for me until this evening when I could stop by and pick it up. I was at the store to price match the online price but by the time I arrived, the online price had changed. I pulled up your wiki PDF on my phone and the CSR price matched, then I showed the $25 off $75 staples coupon again on the phone that Staples sent me. However that coupon said valid on online and phone orders. He reluctantly accepted the coupon as a one-time courtesy.

Thank you for posting the PDF in the wiki. Repped.

You are very welcome. I didn't even think about using a $25 Staples coupon when I went and got mine. I used the $15 coupon from an earlier post...oh well...only cost me $68, I'm happy :)

You guys are lucky.
I got turn down when trying to use coupon. The manager said I can't apply coupon because I ordered it online. Even they refused to apply $5 office max coupon.
edit:
looks like there will be many great offers for external hard drive on black friday.
I think I'm going to return this one.

Got one in store yesterday. Price matched with no problems whatsoever. I did print off and take in the page when it showed $80. There's other drives coming up on BF, but this was a smokin' deal for not having to fight a crowd. Plus, I have hundreds of dollars in OM ink credit right now anyway.

I bought one also. Tried Staples 25 off 75 and Officemax $5 coupon. No go from the "acting store manager".

That said, I see the upcoming $65 BF deal at OfficeMax. Will they price match when it goes on sale?

Hey guys, I hope you can help. I bought one of these drives online the other day, and I just received it. But it looks like the hard drive has been used. The packaging looks like it has been opened and plastic protector on one side has lots of bubbles like it has been peeled off and put back on. Do you know if there's a way for me to tell if the drive has been used before?

When I plugged in the drive to my mac it wouldn't even let me save files in it because it has been formatted for "Windows NT File System (NTFS)" according to the disk utility. The box says that it's compatible for Macs, so it should work out of the box, right? What do you think?

Not sure how everybody else's luck was, but I got two of the slower (i.e. not 7200 rpm) drives. Going to try to return them.

How can you tell that you got the slower one?

And by the way, would you happen to be using a Mac? If so, were you able to write to it out of the box?

I opened up the cases (not as difficult as I would have thought from some comment on here) and googled the model number. The case actually fit back together fairly easily and snapped back into place. They took it back without issue.

Not using a mac, sorry.

I didn't open the two I got but the thing I do not like on these is they do not turn off when the computer or blu ray player turns off. I am going to return them and buy the Toshiba 2TB Canvio Desk at Fry's for $89.99. This one does turn off when my computer turns off and when my LG blu ray player turns off.

The Austin Fry's doesn't have any in stock but they gave me two rain checks so I am good later this week.
