Just received an email from GameFly informing me that BioShock (PC) is free today for download on the GameFly client. Not sure if it only applies to those who already had the client or not, but worth checking out for those that have never yet played the original BioShock.

Just downloaded it and it is certainly free.

EDIT: It appears that even if you did not have a previous account with GameFly, you can create one and get the game.

Do you have to have a paid Gamefly membership account to use the client and get Bioshock for free?

I got the email myself, but the only account I have is one I use to buy (not rent) used games occasionally. Is that purchase-only account all I need to get Bioshock in their client? Can I install the client and get Bioshock on more than 1 PC using my purchase-only account?

Nope. I don't have a paid account and I downloaded it for free in just a few seconds. It did require a CC, but it simply linked it up to the one I usually buy used games with.

Im pretty sure Bioshock has been free on GF client for some time now.

I already have BioShock on Steam, but I got it anyways on GameFly just for redundancy. Seriously, a game this good for free is almost unbelievable.

Worked. Purchased for $0, shows up in my GameFly client (which is like their version of Steam). No need to download it now - it'll be tied to your account so you can download it later. I have a non-paid account, so you don't have to be a paid member of GameFly.

With their sale on Valve games (still going on currently) and an online coupon (BETATHANKS i think it was), I just picked up Half Life 2, HL2 Episode 1, HL2 Episode 2, Portal 2, and Bioshock from the Gamefly website for all under $10 within my first week of switching from Mac to PC. That is a great price for rebuying a game you played a while back, but I haven't touched any of these games (except maybe a quarter of HL2)! I am stoked for the winter.

Correct. If you've ever purchased from GameFly before (used games, new games, rentals, etc.) it will just link up to that.

None that I can tell, sorry. Considering this promotion is 'for' their game client, they are probably operating it as a loss leader -- you pick up the game for free but are dedicated to their client. Could be wrong on that, but it makes sense from a business standpoint.

Not sure at this time. I bought two games with this deal and I received my status update, but Bioshock was the only game that did not include a key to activate with other clients.

How many different PCs can you install the same game and activate it with the Gamefly client?

On Steam (and Xbox Live) it's unlimited provided you are only logged in and playing on 1 computer at a time which is how I'd prefer that all game clients worked. How does Gamefly's client work?

Used to be a member of Direct2Drive which was purchased by GameFly. Since I received the e-mail about the free BioShock game, I tried to check out, which as others have pointed out, needs a valid credit card number. Seems unacceptable to me, for a free game, with no cc information mentioned being needed in the e-mail at all. Their support team was unhelpful as well, re-stating that a valid working credit card is needed for the download. Pity, but they can keep it.

Curious - with as many things as SDers buy online, it doesn't seem like a CC would be a huge hurdle to overcome. But beyond that, why not just set up a temporary card with the usual $2.00 minimum balance via your electronic checking account?

I'm not saying that you should inherently want to jump through hoops for this deal, but it isn't like options aren't out there.

My bank doesn't support virtual card numbers for one time use. While I appreciate and respect your input, as that may work great for others, I was just confirming that you will definately need a valid credit card number to get the deal. I'll live without the game.

Nice! I didn't have one on file with them, since I suppose that didn't carry over from their buyout of the D2D. I did try an expired card, but of course it was declined.

Anyone else having an issue logging into Gamefly? It will not take my password and I have requested a password reset 3 times but never get an email.

I also created a second account but it will not let me add my credit card since it is attached to my other account.

I wished this was on Steam because I already have Bioshock from Microsoft but hate the super long loading times between levels. According to my research it has to do with the DRM installed through Marketplace.

downloaded this but it would freeze on me upon loading. after a couple of tries, I decided to uninstall it.

Try to use $0 amex prepaid card but fail. Then try another one with $25 prepaid amex card and work. I'll see if this game work on this mediocre pc tm morning. Ty OP.

I have googled for results, some people say slow service and do not get new releases quickly. I am mainly using it for older games that I haven't played with so it should be good, but want to get a grasp of people's opinion.

Shipping is the biggest problem people have; it takes a week turnaround for most people (2-3 to return the previous title + 2-3 days to receive next title). These are their shipping centers

If you do 2-at-time you'll always have one title while the other is in transit.
For older titles (+10 months) you may be better off buying from them, lots of great $10-20 sales every month, as opposed to paying +$20 for rentals every month

I looked into gamefly because I didn't want to purchase a whole bunch of games from $10-$20 only to like a few of them. With the rental, I feel that I am open to choices for one price/month. I live in NY, so I'm guessing a week for round trip?

With my backlog of games it may be a year before I install the gamefly client to play the game. Hope they're still in business.

Then do it for the winter. In a few months you'll know which franchises you like. (if you're into the eBay/CL hassle than just buy and resell when done, little to no losses)

The only catch is that you don't get the online codes through rentals, and it seems more and more are requiring these codes now

and yes, a week (4-7 days) for NY (and just about one living outside the city limits of their five shipping centers). It may take 4 days in total from Pitt, but some of their rarer titles will come from the West coast, in which case 7 or 8 days

HELP!!

Has anyone out there actually been able to play this game in full screen with Win7? Because I can't!

I had this with Steam already but just could not get it to work. So I downloaded the gamefly one thinking maybe it is something to do with the Steam client that is causing the problem but the same issue are with the gamefly version, too.

I have tried all the suggestions I could google dating back to 2009.

So far:
Compatibility mode: Vista SP2. (Tried XP but then could not even get to the "legal" page.)
Turned off all sound devices except speakers/headphones.
Turned on the disabled realtek stereo output in the recording section of the sound.
Installed then uninstalled OpenGL
Plugged in headphones in the mic input
Tried to uninstall some other graphic device (i forgot the name) but I could not find it in the program list and probably is not part of the Steam or Gamefly install anyway.

I can get the game to work in a window (I think, didn't go very far) but not full screen.

Anyone? Help?

Thanks and repped. For what it's worth, I didn't have an updated credit card on my Gamefly account (it was an old one) and the purchase still went through. Good deal for us that had Gamefly in the past and don't want to update their CC info.

its free but they need an active cc? weird. im using my account that I havent used for years and the cc info hasnt been updated so my order is on hold till I update it, for a $0.00 charge? weird. but they still give me the download option. im installing it on another computer since the first computer wont get past 21% update. hopefully it provides me with a file that I can move to the other computer, I doubt this computer can run it.

I don't have any suggestions but wanted to comment I downloaded this when Amazon had BioShock 1 and 2 for $7 last week...So far I installed BioShock 1 and had similar problems. I can play in Full Screen for a few minutes, and then it randomly switches to Windowed mode. I can switch it back while in game, but then it goes back to windowed. I haven't found a solution for it and just ended up playing it in windowed mode so far.

Wish I had an answer for you, but I don't know. And I doubt that anyone has used the GameFly client enough to know that answer either. It did just come out of beta testing, after all. My guess is that they are at least following the lead of Steam, if not even a bit looser (for a competitive advantage of some sort since they are late to the client party).

I got it and then deleted the Gamefly client and the game still works, so you don't have to keep the client afterwards.

I guess my third time asking was the charm to get a reply. :-) If nobody knows if there's a limit to activations on Gamefly's client, then I'll assume it's like Steam for now and that you don't have an installation/activation limit... just playing it on only 1 PC at a time. To be safe, though, I guess I should install it on the most important PCs first in case there is a limit.

Yeah, it was the 'third time' thing. In seeing your two prior posts I was hoping that someone else was more familiar with the client than I, but I think it is pretty much new to all of us, so figured 'some answer' may be better than none :)

For those leery about using a credit card, I used a prepaid rewards card. It was an AMEX card from a rebate. The only issue I had was determining the card validation code. It was not the three digit number on the back. I just kept trying different numbers on the front and back. It was a 4 digit number on the front, just above the card number.

I hope this helps someone.

Unfortunately, this is likely a failure of the game developer. This game has had major issues even upon release with non-XP systems. Once upon a time it actually worked, though I believe that perhaps some updates to Windows have caused it's current issues. Technically, the developer should have an obligation to fix the game though they never will. Since once you open software it may no longer be returned. So essentially, those of us that actually spent money to buy this game were ripped off... Unless we run XP. As terrible as XP is I think I may install it alongside Windows 6.x (Vista/7/8)

I did the same. AMEX codes are on the front; but once in a blue moon you will be required to use the 3-digit on the back. Very odd.

Oh loss leaders... Now I have Gamefly, U-Play, Origin, Steam, and Intel App-Up center all because of these free promo games :lol:

Also, you can use a prepaid visa card with a low balance as your credit card for the account.

I jumped through the hoops, gave them my credit card, received the "Your digital items are ready to download in the GameFly Client. Please see the details below." email.

Clicked on the download button in the email, which brought up the GF client. The game does not appear anywhere in the client. I am using the latest GF client. Using Windows 7.

Is something broken, or did I miss something ?

Worked fine for me, bought it in 2 seconds then installed the client. Game was under "All Games" in "My Collections." Make sure you bought and logged in under the same accounts, on the website and the client.

The tech support guy said my email address was "high risk" because of the domain it was on. Good lord. Changed my email address and was able to buy it. They couldn't bother to tell me this when I signed up for the account....

Thanks. I had the same problems with the Amex card. Tried entering the 4 digit number from the front which was something like "0123" so I just entered "123" because the validation codes are usually always just 3 digits. Now I know that I should have entered that "0" too. I'll have to remember this for future use.

1 digital copy can be made into 1 Million digital copies for pennies.
1 CC input can be stored for a lifetime. 1 steam/GF client permission "on/off" switch gives complete control to Gamefly on whether you can play this "Free" game or not.

It's "Free" but they control if you can play it.

Guys I have few questions, I have never ordered games through clients

1) Once you "Purchase" it, do you have to download it right away or can you just leave it in ur client for future download?

2) Once you download will it be available for future? i.e. i can uninstall and reinstall for future? or is this free for onetime download?

2) Once you download it, yes, it will be there for future usage. These clients are merely cloud drives of sorts for your games, not unlike downloading music on iTunes or Amazon.

Here is what i did:

I go to my account to edit the credit card, you can into put in a old/empty prepaid visa/mastercard; you can't just put in random number as it will show as invalid.

Now they only have a dummy card and can't "accidentally" charge you anything.

They'd really be all in if they went with Phil. Brown is owed ~$5.5M over each of the next two years. Phil would run them another $10M - $11M. $16M is a heck of a lot for a coach!

Fact is they should have never hired Brown in the first place. Shaw or Rambis would have been more logical fits.

Bioshock.exe has stopped working - Dangit - game does not even open - wtf

Game launches fine for me on Windows 8 64-bit. After it downloaded and I selected install, I closed the client and started the shortcut from the desktop. It activated and launched with no problems.

There are only 2 organizations in Pro Sports that Money is never the issue, its always about winning the championship and those are Lakers and Yankees!

$16 mil is pocket change for them! haha

I downloaded the client, created an account, and the teaser on the front page says "Free Game Download Now" and shows the Bioshock image.

However, the only place I see to get the game is the BUY NEW section at the top for $19.99

Yeah, I was apprehensive on putting the cc in for a free game and when I did around 9PM, it showed as 19.99 at checkout but if you reviewed the cart is was free.....Needless to say I wrote customer support a note, waiting their reply.......If I wasn't paying attention at check out, I would have been out 20 bucks....

I actually asked them to close my account because i couldn't delete my CC, the chat rep added an option to my account to remove the CC. Not sure how but he did.

It's an old but great game. It was one of the first games I completed because it held my attention just like Dead Space. Part of what makes it great is there are multiple ways to kill splicers and Big Daddys. My favorite was covering a corpse or some other object up with a bunch of proximity mines, using telekenesis, and then throwing the body. Or you could lure it in front of a security camera and get the drones to do your work. Or Enrage other splicers in the area. Or set various booby traps. Or another favorite was the freeze plasmid followed by a drill dash. The combination of different plasmids, weapons, and modifiers kept the game interesting. I've encountered few other games quite as good (except for the Dead Space ones).

Dude, I appreciate your help but this isn't applying to me.. I'm using Windows 8. When I go to the recordings tab and make sure show disabled devices is ticked.. I still don't see a device called stereo mix.......... :(

I just checked gamefly's website. They specifically said Windows 8 is not supported =/

They originally said that guide isn't supported by Windows 8.

Anyway, here's how I got the sound working. I manually updated the sound drivers from the website. THEN the stereomix in recording showed up :) Thanks, it's good now XD

-edit- while in game i disabled stereomix to see if the sound will work.. it's still working. I guess I was using beta windows 8 sound drivers. Thanks everyone :)

ugh, I made the mistake of giving them my credit card info. Now its on their file and theres no way to remove it or close my account. Never dealing with this crap again.

Be weary about GameFly. I just bought a few games form them for the first time and had no idea until now that they kept all my CC info. Apparently, you need to have at least one CC saved under them to use their client...even if you're not a monthly GF subscriber like me.
