thanks. that means we should create double work for TD. so given BF is soon (anyone see any SSD's in ads?) should i buy 1 or 2? probably 1. just so i dont feel left out in BF action.

swunder 11-08-2012 10:23 PM

Nice deal just can't justify it when I still have space on my old ass 128GB SSD and all I do on the PC is play SC2.

Ahhh decisions decisions.

ktzluke10 11-08-2012 10:27 PM

this will probably update at midnight, as the rebate is only valid for purchases between 11/9-11/11

Probably not advisable to separate the orders, although it would work out for cheaper shipping.

The fine print says: "Limit Two (2) rebates per qualifying rebate offer, per person, billing address, company, household and receipt/invoice/packing slip during the eligibility period."

Since you are only filing one submission, it will ask you an Order # when you're filling out the registration form. If you have two order #'s, it might screw up something in processing since I think they both have to be on the same invoice.

I would play it safe and order both on the same invoice. The potential savings (~$2.50 on shipping) will be thrown out the door if they say 1 of your SSDs isn't eligible for the $30 rebate because it was on another invoice.

That aside, this seems like a really good deal for a non-OCZ SSD. $0.50 per GB is hard to pass up! :bounce:

I prefer to pay $10 more with Newegg and not worry about rebates. Not saying this is a bad deal. But a $10 difference is not that big. Correction: $8 difference after shipping.

It was briefly $99.99 recently (no rebate), but is no longer available. This is a good deal for a few bucks cheaper, albeit with a rebate.

My comment was in response to those (who like I) bought it from Newegg last week for $99. I didn't mean to imply that it was $99 at Newegg now.

MarcoG 11-08-2012 11:07 PM

Must be MST or PST. Back to my games until then.

snowcrash 11-08-2012 11:13 PM

I'm pretty sure price will not update until midnight PST at the earliest or maybe even Hawaii time which would be 2am PST/5am EST.

Since I'm on the west coast, it wouldn't matter if the price updates early. I can't buy it until the actual date is the 9th so I'll check back in a couple hours.

Got two -- installed in both Dell XPS laptops -- one already had an SSD, but this one is bigger. The other didn't (I'm on it now) and holy crap it's so blazing fast compared to the spinner it had before. Awesome deal -- to me in 2 days (Shop Runner 1 year trial that's about to run out). Just a freaking rad drive...for $99 no rebate!!!

Quick graphs for those of you wondering speeds. When it comes to reads this drive is great, middle of the road writes. For those claiming an 830 is so much better, I would agree if you were writing data all day, but most people need read speed. For the cost, this is perfect for most people. A good size, price, company, product. Hope to get two! (to join my 34 830's ordered).

Yeah, M4's or 830's are the way to go for reliability.

You can get 11% cumulative CB if you go thru other sites. What's nice about rebates is that you make cashback on the pre-rebate amount for a little bonus.

Factoring in the 11% and postage, you're looking at $79.53 AR Shipped.

That's 44.2% per GB... super cheap!

twinypalm 11-09-2012 12:32 AM

1 rebate per envelope?

I read that it's only one rebate application per envelope. So if I buy 2, I have to send 2 rebate applications in 2 separate envelopes? Or is it 1 applications for 2 rebates in 1 envelope? Anyone know?

How would you stack cashback? The last site you go through is the only one that will get credit. I can see something like urlhasbeenblocked + 1% cc on all purchases but nothing more than that. And yes, it stacks due to rebates, but you are buying stamps too :)

Fill out only 1 rebate registration form and send it in 1 envelope.

When the rebate registration form goes live (around 5 AM PST), make sure to put a quantity of 2 for the # of claims so that you receive a $60 American Express Prepaid Card.

When you fill out rebate online it will ask you how many you got. You change qty to 2 and add all other in one envelope and wait for your money back.

Thanks for all the answers. The last time I bought these, It was Intel's rebates and it cames like within 2 weeks.

How would you stack cashback? The last site you go through is the only one that will get credit. I can see something like urlhasbeenblocked + 1% cc on all purchases but nothing more than that. And yes, it stacks due to rebates, but you are buying stamps too :)

Well, since you are buying SSDs like crazy on your Discover Card... I'll assume you're already well over the $1500 in Online Purchases that you get 5% Cashback Bonus on for Quarter 4 2012. That's not a click-thru cashback... it's calculated automatically for online purchases.

So, you can essentially "stack", by choosing an alternative click-thru cashback site with a higher percentage (6%) + (5%) = 11% total.

Again, that's only on your first $1,500 in purchases, so if you've already made online purchases over that on your Discover Card... tough cookies.

:bounce:

I don't see how you arrived at that conclusion. You are allowed 2 rebates.

enk1du 11-09-2012 12:56 AM

Placed an order for one. Finally jumping on the SSD bandwagon! Thanks OP.

mcgija 11-09-2012 12:57 AM

In for one at $90 plus $3 shipping. Good drive and I was waiting for $0.50/gb. This will do perfectly. Hate rebates... but what can you do.

toast47 11-09-2012 01:02 AM

good deal. good thing i dont need one

thinh4u2 11-09-2012 01:08 AM

Yes, I know that. I arrived at that conclusion because if you submit two rebate registrations under the same Offer #, you are more likely to receive a denial for a duplicate submission. If it's worth the $2.06 savings in shipping costs to you, then go for it.

Just trying to prevent a potential headache down the road.

You will have to send in 2 rebate forms in 2 separate envelopes, so you're paying $0.90 in postage.

Separate Orders: $2.29 + $2.29 = $4.58 + $0.90 Postage = $5.48
One Order: $7.09 (variable) + $0.45 = $7.54

cwing 11-09-2012 01:09 AM

Picked up the max quantity of 2 for rebates. Intel SSDs are some of the best for reliability although Samsung is another top pick for me because of their 7mm height drive size for the latest ThinkPads.

VeganThug 11-09-2012 01:11 AM

my reps don't matter, but you got one anyway. good deal. it's very tempting to buy one this early, but extra shipping (hi), mail-in rebate and my perfectionist desire to get the best ssd deal of the season are forcing me to pass.

cmorris1441 11-09-2012 01:18 AM

How does its speed compare to the 830 256 GB? I was waiting to get a 256 GB 830 around BF, but at this price I may have to buy this instead. I don't need 256 GB anyways, but I do need more than 128 GB. This is probably ideal size for me.

reako 11-09-2012 01:42 AM

Dear Santa,

I would reeealy like this.

Thanks,
reako

noircat 11-09-2012 01:49 AM

This looks like an incredible deal...but, will better deals show up up through BF/CM? Is it worth waiting on a deal for a Samsung or Crucial instead of this Intel? I'm also a little averse to mail-in rebates...

If you need one, you should go for it. It seems a decent price for me too. Unfortunately I still got one untouched samsung ssd,128GB, right on desk. I don't know what I should do:confused:

BF is so mainstream stores know they can get away with highers prices as people will be buying during those days. Higher demand then than now.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is the lowest for a while.

Ooo snaps. I don't know whether to buy or not. :/ I'm going to build a PC I just don't know when I'll fully be capable of affording it. This SSD is such a good deal though. If I wait, I could potentially get it cheaper when newer technology has come out =_= *sigh*

Flat-Line 11-09-2012 05:30 AM

If i had the extra cash i would pounce on this, got in on the Newegg no rebate Shell Shocker deal last time and regretted not getting another one for some Raid 1'ing. $0.50/1GB Intel, win. Hopefully a similar deal comes around in another week.

sajordan2 11-09-2012 05:36 AM

Bought one - rebate process seems easy enough (prepaid Amex card to be mailed in 8 to 10 weeks). Great price for 180GB SSD. Thank you!!

I suspect that it's probably not a good idea...

spyder228 11-09-2012 06:10 AM

normal letter is fine, now there is a small chance (waaaay less than 1%) that the mail gets completely lost, in which case you need to contact the rebate company and see if they can work something out

I've only sent registered mail a couple times, and that's for rebates values $300 or more

Out of the ~200-300 rebates I sent last year, only 1 didn't reach the rebate center but I could fax the submission in instead, not that I did since I hate faxing but... :)

always have your return address on the upper left corner of the envelope, and make sure it has stamp(s), also keep photocopies of the entire submission, that is all the documents you are sending as well as a photocopy of the addressed envelope with stamp

4myrebate rebates are very good compared to other rebate programs, I never use registered mail for them, no matter what the rebate sum is.

I think it will.

I always wondered how much improvement in performance an SSD could make to an old computer.

A few months ago, I spent an afternoon trying to satisfy my curiosity. I put a 120gb Kingston HyperX 3K (SATA 3.0) in an old computer, a Pentium D (dual core 2.8ghz) with 4gb DDR2, SATA 2.0, and ATI 4670 graphics card.

For control purposes, I set up another Pentium D PC with the same exact configuration but with a WDC 750gb HDD.

The result was obvious from the get-go. I did not have to run any tests to know that an SSD made a meaningful difference. The obvious : very fast boot, quick loading of any program, etc.

I set aside 12gb for virtual memory and open up 20 web sessions while running two math intensive applications in the background. The PC with the SSD ran like a "new" computer and handled the tasks without any problem. The one with the WDC HDD could not keep up and eventually froze. Here are the WEI's for your reference.

CPU 4.6

Memory 5.3

Graphics 6.7

Gaming Graphics 6.7

SSD 7.7

Pentium 4 is single core and your HDD interface may be SATA 1.0 (1.5 Gbit/s). I do not know how much improvement an SSD will make (my next project?), but I bet performance will improve in a monetarily meaningful way.

You should get $12 (10%) back. 5% thru Shopdiscover and 5% thru quarterly Cashback bonus for online purchase (if you signed up).

Exactly what I was thinking, except I will upgrade the wife's laptop... not sure if she would ever notice though...

lol I thought about that too, then I determined my wife would most certainly not notice. She restarts her laptop maybe once per month...and really only uses it for FaceBook / MS Word.

Triple that - I've been waiting for another good deal on Samsung 830. But nothing as good as the ones in Mid-October prices have reappeared yet. So this is a good consolation until one is available.

More space than a 128gb, 256gb preferred. But for the price this is a decent deal. Any suggestions for cloning software to get from a spindle drive to SSD? Is Norton Ghost of Adonis Truimage better?

We'll all be very happy with our new Intel SSDs, wives and gf's included. ;)

BombaySensei 11-09-2012 11:43 AM

Damn this is really tempting. I still have a 2 year old 120 GB X25-M that is running smooth as butter. It's enough space for me, too. I think I will pass, but this is a great price! I think I'm gonna hold out for 512 GB or 1 TB SSDs :D

Oh, they would notice - the reduced space that is.

And I did sign up so I hope you're right! I never know how that stuff works. Either they don't present it to you clearly or I'm not looking in the right place!

Nonetheless, I'm excited to pep up the laptop!

mrpinkdonttip 11-09-2012 12:16 PM

Apologize if this has been asked already; I have an older 80gb intel ssd I plan to clone to this one. Will the intel ssd toolbox just work on the new one or do I need to config it again? any special concerns when cloning ssd drives? Anything else I should know? I know I'm being lazy but I'm swamped and hoping someone just knows this offhand, thx

iRabbitt 11-09-2012 12:16 PM

the 80GB for $40 from TD works great. you'd be a fool to pass on this deal, it is an incredible drive with top notch performance.

Laser1987 11-09-2012 12:17 PM

I think I've reached the $1500 purchases cap already. And... I am not sure if shopdiscover 5% is stackable with the current 5% online purchases.

Thus, Amtrak 5x Bonus Points is a better choice for me.

Noob question: Can this perfectly install in a laptop or does it require one of those laptop SSD kits to get them installed?

munkymonkjr 11-09-2012 12:18 PM

Is the shop discover 5% stackable with the current 5% online purchases promo?

Yes it fits laptop without "kits". Kits are for desktops.

Yes, they are stackable. A quick call to Discover will clarify this for you. I called a few weeks ago and they confirmed 10% (5% ShopDiscover and 5% qtrly Cashback) before my purchases at Tigerdirect.

Thanks to Laser1987 for the reminder that there is a cap of $1500 in purchases for the qtrly Cashback.

As long as your laptop isn't ancient or is an acer netbook, Macbook Air or some other super slim/small machine then you should be good. Otherwise you'll need a pata adapter, usata adapter, etc..or a smaller (msata) or shorter (9.5mm, find a deal on an Intel x25, 320, 520, etc..and remove the black spacer and replace w/some screws off a wifi card) SSD. If I misinterpreted what you mean by "laptop SSD kits" and you're talking about migrating the OS from the old drive to the new SSD, then I'd do a fresh install on it or you could clone the drive. Personally I'd roll w/clean install so you get a little of that 'used, but new to you' car feeling back when you get back behind the wheel, you know what I'm saying. Post the make/model of your machine, and I (probably everyone who's still reading this thread 10 pages in) will be glad to help anyway I can.

poetuan 11-09-2012 01:42 PM

By the way, Intel provides the cloning software for free. Just have to download it from their website. I think it's Acronis. The toolbox also sets all the necessary to optimize your ssd (turning off indexing...etc.)

Will I be able to clone the existing hard drive in my laptop without buying a separate kit?

abistro 11-09-2012 01:49 PM

Very tempting... though i'm weary with TD rebates.

The samsung 256GB 830 deal is a much much better deal, controller wise and performance wise. The Anandtech review on the 330 answered my question:

'Should you fill a SF-2281 (controller) based drive completely with incompressible data then continue to write to the drive with more incompressible data (overwriting some of what you've already written) to fill up the spare area you'll back the controller into a corner that it can't get out of, even with TRIM.

The biggest problem with Intel's SSD 330 really stems from the limitations of its SandForce controller. Performance with incompressible (or software encrypted) data is hardly competitive. As an unencrypted OS/application drive the 330 is great, but if you're planning on using software encryption or will be primarily storing photos, videos and music you'll want to opt for a drive based on a different controller technology.'
