Craftsman Ball-Bearing Tool Chests: 26" 5-Drawer Top Chest $77, 26" 4-Drawer Bottom Chest $84, 26" 2-Drawer Middle Chest $37, Mechanic's Gloves $9 + Free In-Store Pick Up

Top Chest for 83.70
http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_1015...931014000P

Middle Chest for 36.89
http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_1015...931015000P

Bottom Chest for 77.39
http://www.sears.com/craftsman-26...ockType=G5

Add filler gloves for 8.99
http://www.sears.com/craftsman-bl...ockType=G2

Total is just over 200. (Actually, you can probably find some cheaper filler for 3 bucks to make total cost 5 bucks less)

Use code, SAVEONTOOLS for 35 off
Use code, SEARS2012 for 5 off.

Total is 166.97.

Use sears card for another 8.35 savings.

Final total 158.6 + Tax (instore pickup)

I know alot of people are saying this tool chest is not great and filmsy. But for less than 160 , as a DIY-er , it will do me.

Thanks.

[edit]

if you want to make this deal sweeter by saving another 20 bucks. Perform a 2nd step.

Place a 2nd order with the Top/Middle chest only, and use SAVEONTOOLS and SEARS2012.

Now you have,

Order#1 - Top/Mid/Bottom
Order#2 - Top/Mid

In Order#1, You will notice that all the discounts actually went to the Bottom chest. (Only 43.xx)
In Order#2, you will notice that all the discounts actually went to the Top Cheest (only 57.xx)

When you go to sears to pick up, first go to tools department, and asked them to "return" the Top/Mid chest from ORDER #1. You will get approximately 120 + tax refund (83.xx + 36.xx) back to your card.

Now go to the pick up center, and pick up Top/Mid from Order#2, and Bottom from Order#1.

This brings the cost to a final of approximately 140 for all 3 chests.

Thanks.

You can buy tools to fill it, to do jobs yourself, rather than waste money on 3rd party services. Plus you save all that time not having to find services, meet them at the house, etc. With the internet, anyone can do anything pretty much.

I used to not have much in terms of tools. Now that I have a garage full, and consumables, every job is easy and I don't even have to waste gas going to the store.

twiztid83222 11-10-2012 11:55 PM

This is so worth it! My friend just spent 400$ on a stupid snap on box 1 foot tall! He got ripped the hell off but swears by its worth it lmao!
These are not flimsy i felt it at sears and its very heavy duty . Wont be breaking. If i wasnt moving to fl id get it

Thanks for the heads up, ill be sure to mention this to her :) and yes the internet has been the best invention by far for the average DIYer

Question, I noticed on the invoice the coupon took off money for the bottom and middle drawer but not the top or the gloves... I dont really need those at this time so if I were to return the top and gloves, according to the invoice, I would be left with the bottom and middle for just under $80.. Is this correct? im not sure how returns work when using these coupons

I actually saw that too. I am actually tempted to, place a second order and just buy the TOP/Middle chest, and use the coupons , and return the Top/Middle from order#1... that will be even more savings.

But i am not sure if that will work or not, these things are very heavy. After you pick it up from the store - you may not want to carry it to return it.

You don't know what heavy duty is. But you'd fit right in with all the marketers that label any random piece of junk heavy-duty. Heavy Duty...those words mean nothing anymore.

Hmm lots to think about... if that did work and you saved an extra $30 or so on the whole set, would it be worth the hassle? Also, you would have to be able to return those parts on the spot or take gas into consideration.. so tempting to try lol

Actually, i think the additional savings is 20 bucks. Becuase the TOp/Middle chest is about 110. The coupons will only give you 15 off + 5 off.

This is what i am thinking.

1. Placing a 2nd order right now, with just the Top and Middle.
2. When i go pick up the Top/Mid/Bottom from Order#1 tomorrow - i will go to Tools department and tell them i will return Top/Mid rightaway. (And see how much they refund back to you)
3. Then go to Pickup center, and pickup Bottom from order#1, and Top/Mid from Order#2.

That together will be,

43.xx (Bottom) + 57.xx (top) + 36.89 (Mid) = ~137. // 5% extra if using sears card on Order#2 Top/Mid.

For 137, that is a killer deal.

Durable is the new Heavy Duty... If something just lasts with normal use for a few years its considered heavy duty.. Ive learned to expect flaws with everything out there but also being smart enough to make things work just for my needs.. The old days are gone... Although I hear so many good things about Hazet items made in Germany but is the extra cost really worth it? just be smart about your purchases and know what their limits are

just spray paint it pink or whatever favorite feminine color she likes and tell her to imagine how much jewelry she could store in it. that is about how "heavy duty" these boxes are... good for rings and ear rings, etc.

Open a drawer on your friend's Snap-On, then do the same on this one. Kinda like a tank vs a one made out of paper.

No trick needed for me. Just applied one at a time and they both went thru.. double check the spelling.. Also not sure if it applies to Sears but some sites, if you copy and paste the coupon from this site, sometimes it adds a space at the end and you need to delete the space for the coupon to work

It was in my deal center coupons. I thought it was a multiple use coupon, but you may have a different number.

dusty_0717 11-11-2012 08:52 AM

Here [sears.com] is a filler for $2.69 that will still get you over the $200 mark.

Go to www.shopyourway.com and log in. On the left column click "My Coupons" and see if you have a $15 off $100 tool purchase online. If so click "Load to My Account". Go back to your sears shopping cart and click "Apply my Shop Your Way Coupon".

Also, don't forget CB.

Brings my total down to $150.67, without using a sears card.

If your total is at least $205 before coupons, you can stack "SAVEONTOOLS", "SEARS2012", and the $15 off $100 purchase mentioned above.

I've heard pretty bad things about the black Harbor Freight boxes. The reviews of this box are middling on Sears website, but I can't imagine that it's worse than the HF one. Frankly, they're probably made in different parts of the same factory in China.

I don't think you're ever going to get amazing quality for $150, but for a light DIYer like me I think this should be just fine. Good deal OP.

IIRC, the harbor fright ones are thicker gauge metal. True "heavy duty"/shop level boxes start at $1000 for 26-inch-ish box and really get into the $3k-10k price range.

I purchased this unit last year as a second box and quickly sold it on craigslist due to how flimsy the metal is. It will work fine for a homeowner. Not for a hobbyist or shop worker. It was just too flimsy compared to the grip-latch set I have (which I love btw, but it also could use thicker sheetmetal). Due to lack of garage space, I just moved to hanging the big, light things on pegboard.

LilTed 11-11-2012 11:06 AM

I ordered two sets - used the save on tools, shop your way $15 coupon, and visa $35 off $300 link. Ended up with 2 full sets for $285 pre-tax, or $312 after TN 9.25% sales tax. = $156 each set.

And by the way, pretty sure this is the doorbuster set they have for $199 on Black Friday.

I went and checked these out in store. They are the "basic" lower line Craftsman boxes, but look like they would work very well in a homeowner's garage. The locks are a bar that clips in vertically at the fronts and lock in place with a key.

The display models in-store had drawer liners added to them. They look very useful to keep things from rolling inside the drawer:

This may be more useful than the gloves.

I hear the HF 44" is the goto value tool box over on Garage Journal Forums: http://www.garagejournal.com/foru...p?t=153445 But for $150 I'm not gonna be too picky. Worse comes to worse I'll just flip this on CL once the Craftsmans go back to retail price of $475 after tax

I've had tools for 20 years, this is a good deal. I don't need it but it's a very good deal. I paid over $200 for my first top box and it wasn't even ball bearing. But it was a lot heavier sheet metal.

The liners are a must have IMO. If you don't have liners everything is going to roll around every time you open and close the drawers, it's annoying and will actually dent the drawers over time.

The display models in-store had drawer liners added to them. They look very useful to keep things from rolling inside the drawer:

Yes, this is the basic line. I was hoping it was the heavy duty line.

I also noticed from the weight that these are going to be very light duty. Tools weigh a lot, I would want heavier sheet metal for the tools I have. But I guess if you don't fill the drawers, you might be ok.

I picked mine up earlier today and just got done assembling it. The bottom roller comes with 1 liner. I used it outside to put between the bottom and the middle. The middle and top don't come with liners. The middle and top box bold together with 2 screws that are included.

Thanks - been looking for a tool box to clean up the garage and although this isn't HD its good enough to keep my tools organized in one place. I'll keep my eyes open for a "nicer" box but this is better than nothing.

ok-speed 11-11-2012 01:50 PM

Almost pulled the trigger, but went to the store to take a look first. Like others have said, the sheet metal is very flimsy. The whole thing just had a cheap feel. That being said though, for the price it's still a good deal. I just decided to pass though, a good toolbox is a lifetime investment, I'd rather spend the extra to get one I know will last.

If you add this deal into the mix, the extra $15 from shop your way comes off the top box which makes it $62. Thus doing the second order thing only saves you $5 (instead of $20) so probably not worth it....

Still a great deal overall though...

I don't think you're ever going to get amazing quality for $150, but for a light DIYer like me I think this should be just fine. Good deal OP.

There's a cheap one from hf that's not very good. But the 44" and 56" ones from hf are very nice. They are made from heavy gauge metal and the construction is better imo than anything craftsman, though the 1000 dollar craftsman are closer. That said I own this box and it works just fine for me... As a home user that is...

I just picked mine up. It's very flimsy. I thought it would be like my other craftsman ball bearing chest, but it's not. I'm wondering if this is a special promo version. Just a FYI.

fourml8r 11-11-2012 02:49 PM

these are junk boxes.

1. only 25 pound rating per shelf
2. top and middle cabinets are only 12" deep so u lost 1/3 of of your storage right off the bat.
3. the top and middle do lock lock together which makes for a very dangerous safety hazard.

the more expensive craftsman boxes address all these issues.

smokey0066 11-11-2012 03:02 PM

Mike I'm getting the HF mesh liners. Gonna need a few rolls. They're 6.99 now - 20% coupon that can ve found anywhere.

Organizing this tool box is going to get spendy. Thinking about socket trays after liner.

EvilBlackRifle 11-11-2012 03:06 PM

I've been shopping tool boxes, and even the ''Premium Grip Latch'' series at 50% off (40'' combo) felt overpriced at $800 out the door.

The HF US General Pro's are much much sturdier. Check out the thread on Garage Journal.

The 44" HF box is very nice, made by US general. They used to have an awesome top/bottom in the 26" range that I've got in my basement now--I managed to get for a little over $200 a few years back. I think that was replaced with the combo box http://www.harborfreight.com/roll...67831.html

The black HF box in the black Friday ad is trash. They've sold it for a while but only recently slapped the US general name on it. It's no where close to the quality of the other US general boxes. Friction slides, thin sheet metal, etc... It weights about half of the Craftsman setup in this thread.

Same here. Checked coupon requirements and it doesn't look like it is valid on the tool chests - they may have updated it or "fixed" it?

Spend $75, save $10; spend $100, save $15; spend $200, save $35; spend $300, save $60. Offer excludes Clearance, Everyday Great Price, Mechanics Tools, Tool Storage, Compressors, Tool Storage & Accessories and Air Tools, Garage Door Openers and Online Only items. Not valid on international shipments. No in-store price matching allowed with this offer.

I love the Harbor Freight tool boxes. :bounce:

I bought the 44" box and the Red 5 drawer tool cart of them and they are built really well. 349 and 159 respectivly. They are a LOT of tool box for the money.

I have 3 Snap On boxes and like them as well. But the HF boxes are very similar in build quality as the snapon stuff. Obviously, Snap On Warrants their boxes. But the price difference is 10:1.

If you're in the market for a nice box, check out the new HF offerings - and Use the copuons. There is a HF Coupon / deal tread here at SD that is updated with all the latedt coupons. :O

I have seen members from this forum said quite glide is not as good as ball bearing. Its does not work as good.

I was actually shopping for tool chest for a while, and was also eyeing on this 299 set... but i rather pay less and get the ball bearing one.

Thanks.

EvilBlackRifle 11-11-2012 09:15 PM

For anyone considering this please go check out the demo before taking it home. Then go to Harbor Freight and check out their 44'' US General Pro.

For an item I will probably keep for the rest of my life I don't mind spending $350 on the HF and passing up the Craftsman.

Schizamp 11-11-2012 09:16 PM

Wife bought me the top and bottom chests for my birthday a few months ago. They are of decent quality, but a little thin on the metal. Ball bearing chests seem to work well. I had to trim the included drawer liners to fit the chests. No big deal, but would have liked that to be done for me.

Bought the middle chest just now. I expect this to last a long time until I need more room. I took the molded plastic socket/drive containers from my portable chest and they fit damn near perfectly in a drawer in the bottom chest. I had to trim one of them a little with the dremel, but they fit perfectly and look very professional.

Schizamp 11-11-2012 09:18 PM

Harbor Freight (HF) is cheap Chinese bullsh!t. I know a lot of Craftsman stuff is made in China today, but I still put more weight behind Craftsman/Sears to honor warranties and provide better support.

Please please please don't use HF for jack stands.

the lack of depth in the top 2 cabinets defeats the main purpose of buying a tool box, its for tool storage. simple question, would you rather have more storage or less.

the more expensive tool boxes are heavier, but they also have much better casters so they are actually easier to move. same reason u don't buy cheap knives, because a dull one requires more effort.

Agree Harbor Freight is inexpensive for a reason. Ive bought a few pneumatic tools and hand tools from HF, some hand tools lived, most broke after 1 or 2 uses. And the pneumatic tools lasted a few weeks. I love going to HF and looking at all the cool tools and great prices, but truthfully all there stuff is junk.

In general, I agree about the marketing use of the term. However, the tool chests in this deal are not "heavy-duty" at all, and I would avoid buying them.

Sears does have a line of tool chests they explicitly call "heavy-duty", and those actually do have much more sturdy construction than the ones in this deal. The heavy-duty Sears models aren't up there in quality (or price) with the real professional grade tool chests, but they are quite suitable for home use.

Uh, Man, educate yourself. It is a known fact that sears tq wrenches are only warranted for 90 days. Didn't stop them from replacing mine though after 90 cause I accidentally left the handle in a puddle of brake fluid causing the plastic to disintegrate :)

9DodgeFan 11-12-2012 05:54 AM

Sears is so doubtful about Craftsman product quality and reliability that it does not feel confident to stand by Craftsman product beyond 90 days most consumers complain it doesn't work right anyway..

So before you go bitching about HF, think about this for a second..

Oh by the way, that Craftsman Torque wrench I bought for $88 made in china? I returned it back to Sears and ordered one from HF for $15

Reviews are not stellar on both products but I would rather take my chances with HF which has a better warranty than the measely 90 day Craftsman's

Yeah, Craftsman remains expensive for a reason.. to fatten Sears profits

That fact is craftsman quality is far superior than half the crap you get at harbor freight, regardless of where its made.

Could not agree more, the US General is a way better box. The bottom alone is over 250 lbs and it comes with the drawer liners. I made do with the craftsman boxes for some time but finally broke down and got the HF Bottom and later on the top. Wish I had gone that route originally. No comparison in quality. Spending a little more for something you will never need to replace is worth it.

if you want to make this deal sweeter by saving another 20 bucks.

Thanks.

It's called the slickdeals effect.

Mxrider52 11-12-2012 07:29 AM

Yea codes are not working anymore. The coupon says it does not apply to tool storage

oakind 11-12-2012 07:46 AM

Yup - 3 pair of gloves for 26.97. A 3.00 discount was added at checkout for some reason. :D

HF box good for light-medium duty storage

I bought the cheap HF chest for $139 less 20% coupon. The quality is fine for homeowner use and its a great deal for the amount of storage you get. The only real gripe I have is that too many of the drawers are really shallow...which makes sense considering its light duty.

I was going to get the Craftsman set to have a few more deeper drawers for hammers and bigger tools, etc. and move the HF from the garage to the basement shop, but missed it this time.

When I was building and renovating houses, I bought all heavy duty tools and equipment that would hold up to constant use. Now that I'm just a weekender, I don't need pro-grade equipment. So, for the price of one HD tool (or chest) I can buy 2 or 3 things to do other jobs too. I just have to remember not to work them as hard.

When you pick up your new tool chest, do not forget to ask for your FREE canvas tote. Sears is giving away a free red canvas tote to all customers who spend $50 between Nov 8-17. The tote is nice and has an added bonus--bring it back to Sears or Lands End when you shop between Nov 18 - Dec 24 and receive double points on your purchase.

Just ask for the tote when you pick up the chest. They were more than happy to give us one.

Can someone that has picked these up measure the 3 boxes they come in?

I bought two sets and wondering if it could fit in the back of an Avalanche

would you like that? you can keep your hammer, 100 piece Craftsman set and a saw in there and feel good. Did you vote for Romney?

I have the next level up ball bearing cabinet from craftsman and have the 44" Harbor Freight box so I can tell you with certainty that the HF model is far superior. I do have some craftsman tools, many snap-on hand tools along with many specialty tools. More than enough to fill the top and bottom of the HF chest and then some. Why not add a useful comment to the thread instead of being a jack@ss?

I didn't measure, but hopefully I can provide insight.

We bought the top and bottom (no middle). The bottom was quite large. It would not fit in my 08 VW Passat trunk (trunk wasn't deep enough) and also wouldn't fit in the back seat. We had to take it out of the box to slide it into the back seat.

The top fit fine in my trunk.

Hope that helps. I'm sure you can find measurements of a Passat trunk online and compare it to measurements for an Avalanche.

The craftsmen tool boxes are not good quality. The best bang for the buck is the HF roller cart for 99 dollars. Its black and has 4 drawers and a top part that opens. The roller action is similar and of course not ball bearing at this price point.

J3ff 11-13-2012 03:12 AM

Can you please read the thread. It hasnt worked for a day or two!

jshanson04 11-13-2012 05:04 AM

Is this the same deal thats on the last page of the Sears BF ad? Looks like the same toolbox setup for 199. Is that a good deal for that price? If I can get it for 199 now instead of standing in Sears line on BF that would be nice. Since the coup doesnt work anymore looks like for me its 200 before tax with the gloves. Probably dont need those anymore as a filler

Still haven't picked chests up. It's an "xmas" present from the wif, and she's pulling the "you can't open it till xmas" crap.

Heaok711 11-13-2012 08:59 AM

The three boxes fit in the back of my saturn vue with the seat down and the boxes loaded in quite possible the most inefficient way possible (thanks Sears guys!). If you're planning on saving this for Christmas check the drawers. We have to exchange the middle and top pieces because they didn't work right. Hope they are able to exchange them easily and we'll check them before leaving the store this time.

I recently shopped for a Torque wrench, walked into Sears and bought it. $85.. then realized it was made in china.. then, to my shock realized Craftsman warranty is only applicable on it for 90 days.. get this? 90 day warranty on a craftsman item bought at Sears

If you go to a book store (if there's any near you), you'll find HF coupons in those car magazines,
and usually, there's a coupon for the torque wrench for $10

I ended up going with HF mesh rolls. They're $6.99/roll and you'll need 5 rolls to get the job done.

It won't accept the SAVEONTOOLS discount when I checkout. Total comes to $224 and change. Anybodu know why? It says no discount on tool storage. :(

Yeah that code excludes Tool Storage now so this is dead.

Anyone who is looking for a higher gunge box might also consider
Harbor Freight 26" tool box for $299 after instant coupon.

http://www.harborfreight.com/hand...67831.html
coupon is good till 11/30/12

http://personalpages.tds.net/~sla...binets.jpg

http://www.harborfreight.com/roll...ource=1002

I read the reviews on this box and threy seem to praise US General very highly, but the coupon shows it expired on 8/17/12 and someone put in the Wiki that it expires on 11/30/12

Do the stores honor expired coupons sometimes, or is there another coupon available.

g13 11-16-2012 05:42 PM

I just picked up the purchase I made on the 11th. Luckily I was able to stack the promo codes and paid about $150 out the door.

They apparently made a mistake on my order. I just brought everything into my garage and noticed that one of the boxes stated FLAT BLACK, opened it up and they accidently gave me......

http://www.sears.com/craftsman-26...ockType=G1

Instead of the bottom chest.

So currently I have the FLAT BLACK top chest, the 5-drawer basic ball bearing top chest and the 2 drawer middle chest.

What to do, what to do?
