Just waiting for my Pick-up email now.

VaporTrailer 11-16-2012 06:00 AM

Daymn!
That deal is Kuh-ray-zeeeeee!

I was just at MC last night, glad I didn't buy anything!
Gotta head out and pick this up... for the price it's IMPOSSIBLE to beat.

And to think I was going to be happy with my little i5-750 for another year... hahaha!

TU+REPs+Front Page bound!

Would BB price-match an in-store offer only? I don't live near any Microcenters..

SlidingBike 11-16-2012 06:03 AM

I have been trying to buy these from the microcenter but no shop and no ship for us.
If any one can help me to ship from microcenter, I can help them to ship the item/s from Fry's if they want to buy anything.
I will order the stuff from microcenter online, you will simply pick it and ship it (will pay your expenditure to ship it). I will do the same if you want something from Fry's (its very close to my place)

bigmace 11-16-2012 06:04 AM

Wow that is an amazing deal. Can't believe I paid twice that much for a used one a little over a year ago. Great chip right here, I can run mine at 4.8ghz all day long, no issues.

Very doubtful, most stores have some clause in their price match policy that the competitors store must be within 25 miles. Which honestly makes sense. Sadly I dont have a microcenter near me either.

igloo 11-16-2012 06:07 AM

Holy cow! The nearest MC is 1.5hour away.

Okay, thanks for the info! This would be perfect for the build I've been slowly putting together.

omerome 11-16-2012 06:11 AM

Wow!

I was so close to buying a i3-3220 for $99 for an HTPC build last week at Microcenter but I decided not to until I purchase a HD first.

I am glad I did.

Thanks OP. It looks like I'll make a visit today and pick this up.

swunder 11-16-2012 06:11 AM

Holy crap this is an amazing deal.

J Macker 11-16-2012 06:13 AM

the performance difference between the 3570k and 2500k is negligible. I'd buy the 2500k at $100. That's a much better bang / buck. Overclock the 2500k to 4.5Ghz easy. the 3570k may go a little higher

chocomaro 11-16-2012 06:14 AM

no -50 combo discount?

myuu 11-16-2012 06:15 AM

Every time this sets off my deal alert I cry a little inside. Damn my state for not having a Microcenter, amazing deal for those that can take advantage of it.

IMO, this is a terrific deal. Sandy Bridge does not heat to the higher levels that Ivy is getting at, so unless Intel made their Ivy Processors more robust, Sandy Bridge should have a longer lifetime (this is highly variant on use, and cooling that you use). This also makes Sandy Bridge more ideal for overclocking.

In terms of performance wise, Ivy is going to be slightly better. Integrated HD4000 graphics are much better then the HD3000 in the Sandy Bridge (though, I know no one that uses the integrated graphics on their desktop), also the Ivy natively supports PCI 3.0, where Sandy only goes to 2.1 I believe. And of course the Sandy is at 3.3GHz while the Ivy you listed is at 3.4GHz.

Hope this helps!

The i5 has 4 cores compared to 2, 6MB cache instead of 3, no HT but turbo boost, base clock speed is .2 higher.

According to Microcenters catalog it only works if you combine a MOBO with the i3 3225 or i5 3570k

HypeTheory 11-16-2012 06:24 AM

Various parts of the price match policy negate any chance of this unless you just get a crazy person at Tiger Direct to price match it.

One time I knew I was going to take more than the 3 days before I could easily get there, I called the store on day 2 and asked them to put a note on it saying not to cancel it and that I would be in on day 4. I was able to pick it up with no problem. This was on the intel extreme memory deal that the store only had 2 of them at the start of the sale. So I was a bit worried about still being able to get it.
This deal is unbelieveably hot, so I would certainly order it quick and worrry about how to get it later.
good luck

At the point of sale, TigerDirect.com will match any competitor’s price on identical items (matching manufacturer and model). The item must be in-stock, available for immediate shipment and be in the same condition as the TigerDirect.com advertised item. Price matched items are limited to a quantity of one per household.
For TigerDirect.com Phone and Web customers: At the point of sale, TigerDirect.com will match the advertised price of the product, including shipping charges, against other online resellers. Phone and web customers must call 800-800-8300 to request a price match and supply the customer service representative with proof of the lower price by providing the URL of the competitor’s web page or current advertisement that shows the lower price.

For TigerDirect.com Retail Store customers: At the point of sale, TigerDirect.com will match the advertised price of the product against local retail competitors with in-stock product. Retail store customers must provide proof of the lower price by bringing in a printed copy of the advertisement containing the lower price.

Exclusions from the Point of Sale Price Match Policy: The Point of Sale Price Match Policy does not apply to bundled items, free items, pricing errors, items of service, mail-in offers, offers including financing, out of stock, items offered below TigerDirect.com’s actual cost, or limited quantity items, clearance items, open-box items, and used/refurbished items.
I'm not sure if this counts as a Clearance item, or if it violates any of the other terms.

I actually happen to be heading to Detroit tomorrow and this is a nice upgrade from an old AMD Phenom II 940, so this is EXTREMELY temping. The trouble is that I don't really NEED it, and there are other things that I really could/should put $100 toward.

I don't need it either as I'm fine with my 1050t. But this is so tempting. Issue is, if I use it I have to then get a new Mobo, and then reinstall the OS which is a pain. I'd probably end up returning it or throwing it on Ebay.

Decisions.

Edit: Eh, ordered for pickup. Hopefully they'll hold it until Tuesday for me.

Which processor did you get?
AFAIK the latest $40 combo is only on the 3225 and 3570K. It used to be on the 3770K, but that got dropped when they lowered the 3770K price to $230 (at least for ordering online).
This is really broken if they throw in the $40 off, and I suspect they won't.

The AsRock Extreme 4 Z77 board is pretty highly regarded for performance/value built about 6 systems using it without issues.

In for one, woot start of my gf's new build. haha she will have a better comp than me for the first time ever

thanks for the deal :)

jbaruch76 11-16-2012 07:01 AM

what should i even be lookign for in a mobo?
i'm assuming they are all ddr3 and 90% are usb3.0
almost all have hdmi
sata ports are importnat to me, i have alot of drives connected.
should i just be looking for the cheapest board with these features, i don't need crossfire and all that graphics stuff, even though it seems like most have that too?

what makes the $50 board so much worse than the $150 one?

sidorian 11-16-2012 07:01 AM

Time to upgrade my Celeron G530! (which BTW, is perfectly adequate for web browsing and other computer tasks and hardly consumes any power)

RUsum1 11-16-2012 07:02 AM

Well Tiger Direct won't price match because it's below cost. Best Buy is trying to say that MicroCenter does not count as a competitor. Still chatting with them

FeloniusMonkey 11-16-2012 07:02 AM

Totally weak! I added the CPU to my cart. I filled out my info in their system. Then their system had to "verify" my e-mail, so I had to wait for that and click on the link. By the time all that was done, the CPUs were sold out at my store... SUCKS!!!!

pokymon 11-16-2012 07:02 AM

Is it worth to upgrade from AMD 960T?

technically no combo discount for this CPU

Only the 3570k and the i3 chip (can't remember the exact one.. but I'm sure you can find it)

Look closely at the features. When I was looking for a motherboard I knew that I was going with Ivy Bridge and wanted USB 3.0, HDMI, and at least one Sata 3 port for my SSD. I also decided on mATX, which left few options. Based on reviews and price, I ended up with the GA-B75M-D3H. If you're looking for ATX, there are more options. If you're buying this CPU, then you're definitely going to want to start with the Z77 chipset, as it has the best overclocking options.

I will order the stuff from microcenter online, you will simply pick it and ship it (will pay your expenditure to ship it). I will do the same if you want something from Fry's (its very close to my place)

That's fair. I don't have Fry's here. How do you pay me the shipping fee?

Particularly the reason why I feel like people who are generically asking for motherboard recommendations should do their own research.

You buy a motherboard that suits your needs. If you don't need tons of features, you can save and buy a lower end board. If you need a certain size, you need to take that into consideration too. There are several things to consider.

People need to know exactly what they're looking for in a mobo before asking for recommendations.

CordaroyFog 11-16-2012 07:11 AM

Picked up a 3570k yesturday with the combo deal... but am waiting till after BF to open it. This is tempting though. Especially if I can get them to swap it out for the other CPU and leave the combo deal untouched.

oldschooldimo 11-16-2012 07:11 AM

I ordered one from Cambridge, MA. The site says 10+ in stock at the time of this writing.

BTW, does it make any difference whether you opt to pay at checkout or pay at the store? I would be very unhappy to make the hour-long round trip and get hassled about it.

It's an option in the mobo usually. You can turn it off and on. So yes.

CousinIT 11-16-2012 07:14 AM

great deal. Paid $149 for mine a couple of years ago.

xmlwave 11-16-2012 07:16 AM

Does it make sense to upgrade if I am running overclocked i7-930 (4GHz)? My PC is getting OLD, and I would love to try a new build, but I am just not sure if the performance gain justifies new CPU/MOBO.

Just built one of these up and its rock solid. Great board

I was bummed at first when I read this deal just buying a 3570k for $161 at Microcenter tustin, then I remembered the $40 mobo discount so I am still in a good.

To the guy wondering about his i7 930 build. I upgraded from that and I am happy I did, my system runs better than the last one in a few respects. I sold all my LGA 1366 gear and paid a grand total of $38 to upgrade after shipping and ebay charges. Cheapest upgrade ever. DO IT IF YOUR ON THE FENCE

-Lower temps
-Better disk controllers
-Higher gaming performance in BF3
-Recording at double the framerates in fraps

your computer is nothing without a board and it's nothing without the cpu. what matters is what you know what you will need and what you will be using with your computer. you base your buying off what you need.

If I had to do it all over again, I would have gotten a mini atx board instead of the one i have now to go with a smaller case..

lifexpert 11-16-2012 07:16 AM

I bought two of them and I need none. Thinking about flip them here.

Still 10 more in Cambridge location.

bigpollack 11-16-2012 07:16 AM

I got one.
Was going to just post it on E-Bay for a quick few bucks......times are a bit tight.

Now , looking on E-Bay....it looks like my current Core 2 8400 goes for about $40
Have to see what my current motherboard and memory....DDR2 I think...sell for

I have a TON of DDR3 memory lying around for a new build

Might just be time for an upgrade.

Not that the 8400 is slow....but wondering how much faster this i5 will be ?

Depends on how the server is used.

That said, a 2500k would generally be overkill for a storage server. You would be better off with a low power i3 or i5 cpu chip that would be more efficient and cooler for 24/7 uptime.

As far as Microcenter is concerned- I don't think so. I've bought stuff from them before- unlike Frys where your reservation is worth jack squat- Microcenter should actually reserve your stuff if you order it online regardless of whether you pay in advance or not.

CordaroyFog 11-16-2012 07:17 AM

Going to reserve one online for pickup, go in and try to get them to swap for the 3570k while leaving motherboard discount intact : )

this is true, they pull your stuff and put it to the side with your order information. so hypothetically, you shouldn't have to worry about anything.

Well, I have a 8800 and just looked up some benchmarks- across the board I see a roughly 2x increase, a tiny bit more even in some cases. If you OC- should be even better. I'm definitely upgrading- though I'm going to need more than a few parts...hoping to sell my remaining stuff for ~$50-70 and have upgrade costs hover around $100-150

wolverine88 11-16-2012 07:20 AM

Depends on what you do with your computer.

The i7 9xx series is still very much a great CPU even today. It might be a bit slower clock for clock, can't clock as high as some of the K processors and not as efficient (in terms of power), but it's still extremely capable for 95% of most people's needs.

If you feel like you could use the extra horsepower - either for gaming, encoding, or rendering, etc. - then it might be worth it.

I would argue outside of largely CPU intensive work, one would not notice the difference between a 4ghz nehalem CPU and a 4.5ghz ivy bridge cpu.

Depends if you are more concerned about cost, or having new tech. This processor is an amazing deal, and if you can somehow talk the Micro Center rep to giving you a discount on a MB too, then it's a super amazing deal.

That being said, Haswell architecture for the processors is supposed to come out Q2 for Intel from what I remember, so sometime before summer starts. It's Intel tock in their tick-tock model and historically, the tocks have been proven as very good processor improvements. That being said, the Sandy Bridge was also a tock and is also historically known as a very good processor without high heating when overclocking (if you have non stock cooling of course).

Oh yeah, these do heat up with high frequency, even when near stock voltage (where I am)

Using a Thermalright Ultra 120 with Sony SF fluid bearing fan.

The cpu could do more but the temp starts going ballistic and I don't want to pay any more for cooling.

$140 for a board seems a little higher considering the chip is $100

By this logic, if the CPU was FREE then it would be worthless because without a free motherboard you could never justify paying for a motherboard to put it in.

DarkAmeba 11-16-2012 07:31 AM

Stop DDOSing the website!

CordaroyFog 11-16-2012 07:31 AM

Their stocking is notoriously bad, anything below 5 means they might not have any, so don't be surprised. I feel bad for all the employees running around atm lol

Fogmoose 11-16-2012 07:32 AM

Sooooo want to get this as it is such a great deal and I have a MC near me, but simply don't need it....and with holidays coming....must resist, must resist!!!

craxk 11-16-2012 07:32 AM

PC sales must have been so terrible that Intel has to pump up DIY demands to compensate PC sale decline. INTC is going down.

sahil80 11-16-2012 07:32 AM

oh well i am at work right now -- 5 mins from Microcenter -- and i am trying to ignore it.

I don't want one, I don't want one!

Yes but that's not what I mean. I live right here at the headquarters of MC and they are very smart but they have customer satisfaction above all else, so they will often override things because they want to keep you as a customer. That is what I meant.

Andy_ATL 11-16-2012 07:33 AM

I have a 2600k, but this deal is just too good to pass up. In 4 1!!

Thats not the logic, I just try to find cheapest 4+ star mobo's available. My i7 is running on a $100 mobo and has been for nearly 2 years just fine.

I guess in general I just dont like spending a ton on motherboards, but if its rock solid its hard to argue with buying. I'm looking for an HTPC build so preferably a mATX anyway, but if theres a great deal on a board then i'd go ATX.

VOUDOO 11-16-2012 07:33 AM

Just went OOS at Houston West Loop

2500k is about 10-12% slower clock-for-clock but has more overhead for OC. 3570k has better onboard graphics if you care. I don't think the 3570k is worth $70 more, but I got the 2500k for $179 last year and have been real happy with it.

Shrug, maybe? Someone with a LGA1156 system and no desire to mobo swap might be willing to pick it up. I'm running a first gen i7 xeon at work and it's pretty damn snappy.

$140 for a board seems a little higher considering the chip is $100

The Z77 is definitely the caddy of chipsets right now but I think the Z68 still has a lot of life in it. Difference is essentially the Z68 doesn't have built-in USB 3 support (needs a separate USB 3 chip/driver) and doesn't have PCIe 3.0 support. I have a GA-Z68AP-D3 which I'm pretty happy with and it was $59 with a $10 rebate. If you can still find a discount Z68 board I'd pick it up.

Any cheap but good overclockable motherboard recommendations @ microcenter?

they don't ;)

hell, i have a Q6600 (at 3.6G) that i still can't justify to myself an upgrade... sure i'll be able to post far better benchmarks, but aside from that there's nothing my current computer can't do or run :P and yeah, i use it for heavy gaming... BF3 mostly now with my SLi GTX480s.

I will order the stuff from microcenter online, you will simply pick it and ship it (will pay your expenditure to ship it). I will do the same if you want something from Fry's (its very close to my place)

Sadly, here in central New York, we have neither Microcenter nor Fry's nor hhgregg nor OfficeDepot nor ...............

I installed an i5-2400 CPU on that ECS board - works fine. I didn't need to update the BIOS or anything, has been rock solid so far and fast. (i5-2400 is basically the non-overclockable version of the i5-2500K.)

By the way, I had gotten the i5-2400 for $120 around four months ago. It was a good deal then for a machine that I will never be overclocking. But this i5-2500K deal - hot.

Is your BB within 25 miles of a Microcenter?

i put one on reserve (chose the pay in store option) but remember that if you can't grab one, Frys Electronics in Downers Grove price matches online prices....they have a HUGE banner on the side of the store that you can see from I-355 when I drove by there yesterday on my way to MC to pickup my 3770k processor.

vip00 11-16-2012 07:38 AM

Hmm. Sucks that this doesn't qualify for any of the MB combos. Still a ridiculously hot price tho!

Thanks. USB 3.0 means absolutely nothing to me. 0% stake in this PC. The only time I ever find it useful is transferring pics from my Nikon to my PC.

But it's a $250 CPU on sale for $100.

exactly

xmlwave 11-16-2012 07:38 AM

Thanks for all the replies! I decided to keep my i7 930 until Intel's next tick -- Haswell. This is indeed a great price for this CPU (and MC is 15min from me), but there are other costs in a new build, which makes it difficult to justify paying for fairly marginal upgrade.

EddyGurge 11-16-2012 07:39 AM

Got one, thanks OP.

I feel the same. I have a q8200 and it runs everything I want 3 years later. Coupled with a new GPU it can play any game out there ... this is why I made sure i got a quad Core 2 as I knew it would age better than a dual core (though most core 2 duals are still fine)

sbuddle 11-16-2012 07:42 AM

If someone can pick one up for I would be more than happy to buy it at cost+shipping+a lil extra for the trouble

Might have to try this...I will be a touch disappointed if I can't get this but I've been fairly content with my E8800.

Dunno, seems as if the inventory diminshed rapidly on their web counter. MC is not like (trying to think of etailers that massively oversold actual inventories of Touchpad) oh yeah, Onsale.

Hey, never noticed when it registered in my MC order history, but I never received an order confirmation email.

I only received the Pick Up Ready email at 9:48, looking back at my MC order history, I placed my order at 8:56.
