billcsho 11-16-2012 08:12 AM

Nice price. $10 cheaper than other place. This model does not stream media from LAN though.

As far as local network playback, other recent LG SmartTV devices I've bought from 2011 forward have a Plex client called "Media Link" that works great.

Well if it has Plex then this thing is like a Roku with a disc drive. How about the streaming quality? Does it stream well with 1080P? What about video formats? Do any format types jutter over WiFi?

Thanks for the input, repped.

First, I won't be 100% sure this this has Media Link (Plex) support until I receive mine and power it up, so for now it's best to assume it's NOT there. Second, I watch mostly 480p and 720p Plex streams on other SmartTV devices (works great) so can't speak to 1080p. The last Plex format list I saw was:

File Extensions
.divx
.wmv
.avi
.mp4
.mkv
.ts

Video Codecs
H.264/AVC
DivX 4/5/6
VC-1
XViD
MPEG2
MPEG1

Audio Codecs
MP3
AAC
DD
PCM
WMA

Thanks for the feedback. If this has Plex client it is a 100% buy. Since this deal goes until 11/22, perhaps I will wait for confirmation.

I find it strange that this is not an EnergyStar device when its power rating is:
Power On Consumption: 11W
Power Off Consumption: Under 0.5W

It won't be released until 11/21, so you may not know anything by 11/22. However, I see it on BestBuy's web site for $59.99 so it's only a $10 difference.

I've browsed through the manual already [lg.com], but I don't see it mention Plex anywhere. For video format support, it only applies to media on USB device or on disc.

I know, but if you browse the Smart TV information on LG's web site, Media Link is right there on the screen captures. Like I said, best to assume it's NOT there until someone gets their hands on one.

By comparing this model with bp220 and bp320, this model has no DMP (DLNA). So it is likely a reduced function model for the holiday season.

Yeah, I'm withholding judgement until I get it in hand.

On my LG TV, the DLNA browser is not part of Smart TV and is instead listed on the input selection screen i.e. "HDMI1, HDMI2, USB1, USB2, AV1, AV2, COMPONENT1, COMPONENT2, NETWORK (DLNA)."

On the other hand, Media Link is part of the Smart TV menu so my hope is that it will be there. However it works out, it's not a big deal to me because it's for my kids' playroom and they're on Netflix and Amazon more than anything.

kapster 11-16-2012 10:34 AM

I can't find any info on this at lg and its not one of the devices listed at amazon.

As for SmartTV functions, they are listed in 2 sessions: SmartTV Features and LG SmartTV Features. This model shows premium content under LG SmartTV Features, but it is empty in the other SmartTV Features like LG App Store. I wonder if Plex is part of the App Store.
I do need DLNA or any kind of local media streaming as I have my video library in an NAS/DLNA server.

flyingroach 11-16-2012 10:58 AM

This looks to be exactly what I'm looking for gifts. They have LG TV and I want to avoid another crap appleTV since content costs too much.

For any LG Smart TV users. Can you move the apps shown on the first screen? I want to move amazon next to netflix app. I wish this had button to take you right to the app, like my cheap $30 player does.

The info below would work for me...perhaps kids...but not grandma (or mom) M needs a button.

To browse and watch Prime instant video select Home > Scroll right to Premium > Amazon > Prime Instant Videos.

Plex is a third party client that you would have to install, so you wouldn't find it in the manual. From my personal experience, I've found 1080p playback to be pretty awful on most devices (ie previous LG BR players, Roku, etc) anyway. While I do still run Plex on my server, I primarily use it for remote access capabilities. For local service, I simply run my 1080p through the current gen Apple TV and it works just fine. I did pick up a couple of the newer LG Google TVs that have the dual core processors - hopefully they'll have enough oomph to stream 1080p via Plex.

Edit: From what I recall Plex is installed as a "developer"....or maybe that was on the Roku

If I have a decent signal, how much better is streaming tv through LAN vs wifi? I just bought one of those tplink 200mbps Powerline adapters in anticipation of getting a roku with LAN. If wifi is sufficient, I'll get this Blueray player. I have a 6mb line through AT&T DSL with wireless N.

I have two PBO Core Player at home. Streaming 1080p video over the network is not a problem for me as long as the bit rate is not too high. That is more the limit of the network than the device. To be on the safe side, I compress the HD mkv to around 5GB per movie (~3GB/hour, 850B/s). I start to have trouble on my N network when it is around double of that bit rate.

euwil 11-16-2012 11:57 AM

done.

rixsaw 11-16-2012 12:10 PM

This unit look just like the BP325W minus 3D I bought in last week deal. I can tell you that the BP325W is a POS. The WIFI keep losing connection. When you try to reconnect, you have to reenter the passkey every time. The remote feels like cheap toy that you buy at the flea market. It works like one too. You have to point straight at the unit, otherwise, it won't work. Other times, it just doesn't work. My unit is going back even if I'm hit with the restocking fee.

I have roadrunner lightning. When I watched youtube, it pause to buffer every 15 seconds. My tablets, phone, and laptop works flawlessly. I would stay away from this unit. Your call.

EDIT: this unit has only HDMI out and no component out. Meaning the audio out is also through HDMI. So if you have a sound system, your receiver need to have HDMI port as well. Otherwise you are stuck with having the audio via the TV speaker which is my case.

FYI I received mine on Wednesday (2 days ago) and did not see the Amazon app in the Premium apps. It has Youtube, Netflix, Hulu, and Picassa. Not sure if it can somehow be downloaded or upgraded for any other apps, as I didn't see any such option. Also, Picassa showed up only after I upgraded the firmware in the settings menu. For me, it's great for the price with the apps it does have, but if you're looking for Amazon streaming it definitely doesn't seem to have that out of the box.

EDIT - Ok, I just realized that I ordered a different model from the last SD deal - BLU-RAY PLAYER LG | BP325W R
So, I could be totally off in the above review!

mva5580 11-16-2012 12:16 PM

Nice deal, thanks. I think I'm going to pick one up. I have a PC hooked up to my TV but I'm just never satisfied with the Blu-Ray playback on PC. $50 is less than the cost of that software anyway.

formy3kids 11-16-2012 12:17 PM

I ordered it, but it is definitely going back if it doesn't stream Amazon Prime movies. :(

I have the older model that is Linux based. There are many customized firmwares available. One can even record streaming videos. However, it does not support any of the premium content. Nevertheless, there are a lot of free content (even live international TV channels) from Asia that are at least at the Netflix quality. It also streams very well from my computer and NAS with almost any video format.

I rereading my question, I realize that I kinda asked it wrong. How do you interface with the content on your server? My favority thing about Plex is the UI, which I don't get through the AppleTV. That said, if I have to pick between consistent performance and a better UI, I suppose it's a no-brainer. I really just want something that will perform well while using Plex!

wineaux 11-16-2012 12:39 PM

I just talked to LG customer service and the BP200 has both Amazon Video and Media Link. I'm on hold now to find out how fast the wireless is. Is it 802.11g or 802.11n, which will greatly determine your max resolution while streaming. Of course this still has a hardwired Ethernet port which is MUCH faster than any wireless spec used on current consumer electronics gear, and is my personal suggestion when streaming 1080p, whether that is local content or via the Internet. My home is wired with Cat5 (I need to rerun Cat6 at some point soon.), so I only use wireless when I don't have any other choice.

Of note: She told me that this is a 2011 player. Take that for what it's worth. I did mention to her that this player was being released on 11/20/2012, but she assured me that it was still a 2011 BD player.

Please be advised that LG's customer service and technical support departments don't seem to know very much about the products that they sell. If you want or need some serious technical hand holding to setup wireless or worse yet, Media Player (Plex/DLNA) connections, you're going to get frustrated.

Next update: The BP200 has 802.11n wireless, so you should be able to stream 1080p MP4 files, although I'm not sure how it will handle full BD rips that you have on your home server. Tech support is saying that LG has recently discontinued support of Amazon Video in their products, and possibly is/has removed them from their Smart TV's and BD-Players via updates.

And another update: Amazon Video is confirmed on this unit, but be advised that not all LG Smart TV's and BD-Players released from now on will come with it. You will want to make sure before buying. Don't assume they will have Amazon Video like they all did in the past. DLNA is NOT on the BD200. Media Link? It's not standard and they just have no freaking clue as to whether you can add additional apps like Media Link. Who knows if they will add the Media Link app via an update. We'll learn the answer to this one once someone gets their hands on one and tries. Has anyone seen any advance reviews on this model online where the reviewer might have checked or talked about it?

LG's tech support is really awful. They just don't know their own products very well. They're nice enough, but totally clueless.

This is NOT true. The device has a coaxial output for audio output to a receiver. Just look at the picture of the rear end or, you know, read the specs:

Connectors
Digital Audio Out (Coaxial) x 1 (Rear)

The PBO can connect to NAS (on IP) or Windows workgroup computer and play directly from the network drive. It seems the Plex requires to run a server program on a computer. Then it is no good for me. I have most of my video library on a stand alone NAS.

Correct, Plex requires Plex Media Server to be running on the host computer but it's a very slick GUI IMO.

wineaux 11-16-2012 01:37 PM

Ok, that was an incredibly painful and LONG call to LG's customer service and tech support to ask 3 very simple questions that a company like Panasonic could have answered within 5 minutes. Instead, I was on the phone for 53 minutes and only had two of them truly answered, and the tech support guy kept having to ask someone else to confirm stuff. What a cluster! I think I'll be avoiding LG consumer electronics products in the future having experienced their general lack of product knowledge from both their Customer Service and Technical Support reps. This is why outsourcing in bad folks.

After all of that, I will be spending a little bit more to buy the Panasonic BMP220 from Amazon on BF for $68. While it won't POSSIBLY have the Plex client, it will definitely have DLNA and Amazon Video, plus it will have 3D. On top of that, there is custom firmware to be had for the Panny that will make it a region free player, as well as keeping the Cinavia virus off it via a normal Panasonic OTA update, and that IS coming to EVERY commercial BD-Player at some point next year. Oppo MIGHT be the one exception to the forced Cinavia virus, but we won't really know for sure until after the first of the year.

My advice? Avoid this player, and everything TV and video related made by LG solely on the fact that their support reps are woefully untrained and unprepared to answer questions about their own products. They didn't just not know specific tech details, but they didn't understand the basic underlying technologies. The other reason(s) to avoid this player, if you already stream local content via a home network or plan to, is the lack of built-in DLNA, along with the missing Media Link app.

Any chance that you could fire it up and see if it has Media Link, or if Media Link can be added? You might need to do an OTA firmware update, but that would be nice to already have done if you're giving this to your MIL. They usually don't need any extra ammo to get on our case... LOL

My LG BP620 has subtitles with the Netflix app and my Panasonic DMP-BT210 has it also. I would imagine that this would have it too but I am aware that some BD players have crippled versions of Netflix that does not support subtitles.

Thanks for the heads up on the Panasonic. The LG BP325 that I ordered over the weekend is lost, so it was a blessing in disguise. For $10 more the BMP220 is a no brainer over the LG. The BMP220 should make front page next week. Thanks again.

wineaux 11-16-2012 07:28 PM

The BMP200 is a very bare bones and stripped down BD-Player. It has their Smart TV feature, but only a limited number of apps, and no known ability to add to them. It doesn't have DLNA either. Plus you have to deal with LG's pathetically awful customer service and technical support.

Just received this POS! THIS DOES NOT HAVE THE SMART APPS AS ADVERTISED. NO AMAZON INSTANT VIDEO.

I am pretty pissed about this........

EDIT: The LG app store also is missing on this stupid thing.

Saw this on LG's website regarding the App Store:

We appreciate your interest in the operations and features of this BluRay player. Once the HOME menu has been selected, you should have options for MOVIE, PHOTO, MUSIC, PREMIUM, and SETUP. The PREMIUM feature is your Apps Store.

I saw that too, but if you look at the other responses, it sounds like that information was incorrect. It really doesn't sound like there's no access to the Apps Store - that is, no way to add apps that aren't preloaded.

I'm pretty pissed. I ordered this and had it shipped to my in-laws expecting it can do Amazon instant watch. Not sure whether to complain to Newegg or LG.

No Amazon or Huhla on the APPS and it doesn't remember your network settings when you try and access the internet keeps dropping the connection, not a happy camper at all. DONT BUY THIS !!!

I really only needed it for Netflix streaming, so I am happy about that for the price and the very small footprint of the player (using it in the bedroom).

Now that I have it, I did check the PREMIUM feature...and yeah, that is not an app store. That is just where the apps are located. Total misinformation. But I am still happy for what I got and the price. Just depends on what you are looking for.

Glad it worked out for you. For me, I purchased this over other devices because it said it supported Amazon video; I would've gotten something else if I had known. I just emailed a complaint to LG - we'll see if they respond.

Can anyone confirm that this player can not remember the WiFi setup? I have to enter the password every time turning on the player, which is a pain. I will return it.
