Ah, I factored in shipping and tax on that one which for me took it over the frys price(as they are not in OH so no tax)

i dont have a Walmart near me so didnt get that deal

for this deal if you factor in ShopDiscover plus Discover 5% that takes out the tax so at 12:01am gonna pull the trigger... waited over a year for this deal... also got the Walmart deal a few weeks back but gonna sell that one or give it away and just keep the movie money

StriderH1ryu 11-17-2012 05:45 PM

good deal. the walmart deal is better for me. I'm going to spend money on the Hobbit movie anyways. I'm only paying a few dollars more for the set that I can give as a gift or sell a tiny profit.

charlie hustle 11-17-2012 05:59 PM

If this is true I'll switch my order from amazon, have 10 bucks of bb rewards i need to use. Wasn't going to be seeing Hobbit (I think extending a small story into 3 movies is idiotic) but I guess if this makes it free I'd go matinee.

Does anyone know the UPC for this?

paruchda 11-17-2012 07:05 PM

Walmart is listing the regular LOTR blu-ray trilogy for $12 now, but it doesn't mention movie money.

soccerdude21490 11-17-2012 07:11 PM

Just fyi... the movie money is for a ticket up to $5 probably... sooo for MOST people, that's not a free ticket at all.... but still a good deal.

The movie money thing was a special promo, and no its not $5, its $10. It also doesnt ship until like Dec 8th.

Its just weird how they list the regular theatrical edition for $12 for 4 movies, but the extended is $40-50? Doesnt make sense.

AFAIK, the theatrical set for 12 bucks is just the three movies on 3 discs. Thats it, just the bare bones. No extras whatsoever. The set with extra features is 29.99 (I think). I believe this extended set will be 15 discs, jam pack full of extras, making-ofs, interviews, and behind the scenes.

It might be worth pointing out that if you already own the extended edition dvds you don't get anything new as far as extras here. In fact the extras are the same exact low def extras (dvds not blu-ray) that already came with your EE dvds years ago.

AndrewinMD 11-17-2012 10:08 PM

Crap, I'd buy it online (if that's possible), but I won't return to the States until 15 Jan. No use for movie money over here!

takensobackoff 11-17-2012 10:17 PM

I already own the theatrical version on blu ray, but at this price I am in. Best Buy, stealing all my monies.

jonyyeh 11-17-2012 11:18 PM

Couldn't cancel my order with Amazon. But if I get this from Best Buy, then I will just return to sender my Amazon order if possible.

The theatrical edition is poorer quality. check out blu-ray.com for more info, im sure there are more benefits to the extended than just better AV quality

hrdoran 11-18-2012 10:05 PM

I have the Monday DOTD page now, but clicking through the price hasn't dropped. Does it traditionally take long for that to update, too?

Yeah I guess youre right. Looks like the extended were in fact remastered. Honestly though, id have a hard time believing its that much of a visual difference. The movies are fairly new, its not like they were done in 1990's. Other than that, extended are just more footage. Im not sure what else you think they would be.

theGr81 11-18-2012 10:12 PM

i see the deal but the price isnt there... how can you tell if the movie money is included, i cannot see that anywhere... thanx

Yeah even when i add it to the cart, it still says 49.99. Hopefully they fix this soon.

jdwyer2009 11-18-2012 10:18 PM

There is some clock counting down for me from 43 minutes but every time I refresh the page, the clock reverts back to 43 minutes. It's like my own mini version of Groundhog Second

You guys do realize the second link in OP is not yet active right? Thats for this upcoming week it looks like. It is not yet Monday, thus it is not yet active.

The current price is $49.99, thats what its supposed to be. And the hobbit movie money thing is always a temporary deal. If you havnt noticed, the weekend is now over so most likely that has ended.

hrdoran 11-18-2012 10:23 PM

It's live.

jdwyer2009 11-18-2012 10:23 PM

Price is live

Thank you OP!!! Awesome.

falleng0d 11-18-2012 10:24 PM

Yeah, looks like they updated it 2 hours early. It is live.

laidbacklarkin 11-18-2012 10:25 PM

even at this price, its still a robbery - what the hell, the last movie in this series was released almost 10 years ago...this is like George Lucas milking his franchise every two years. what next ? an extended plus anniversary edition with a new disc featuring Peter Jackson's family tree ? shudder to think what the circus in town will be like for 4k upgrade of this....$19.99 - that's the fair price on this !!

jdmgreg 11-18-2012 10:25 PM

Got in. Thanks OP!

BladeD 11-18-2012 10:26 PM

It's Monday on the east coast! I guess you have to go the store to be sure of getting the MM!

Baguda 11-18-2012 10:29 PM

There is no mention of the Hobbit Movie Money in the product description or title. Are we still going to get it? Thought it's only $5 without it I might return this and wait for it to be cheaper. I wonder if ordering it for shipping vs. in store pickup will have a better chance of getting the movie money?

hahah there are more time zones than PST. Pretty sure BB operates in CST. Probably why things started moving around 12CST.

No, they don't - and even if they did, that would be Eastern time, not Central time.

ogre177age 11-18-2012 11:40 PM

So does this copy actually have Hobbit Movie cash?

pablomoca 11-19-2012 12:15 AM

An Unexpected Journey, The Desolation of Smaug and, There and Back Again, due for theatrical release in 2012, 2013 and 2014, respectively.

typesdragon 11-19-2012 04:16 AM

Can anyone confirm that the hobbit movie money is included?

clearanceman 11-19-2012 04:26 AM

Not a deal for me, no mention of the Hobbit movie money and after tax it's almost just the same price as the Amazon one I just bought. I'm keeping the one from Amazon unless someone can confirm free Hobbit money.

CobbFC09 11-19-2012 04:28 AM

Everyone asking about Hobbit movie money:
"per BB insider quikblend at Blu-ray.com the extended edition box set will be $39.99 and it also is stickered with Hobbit movie money"
So it looks like it's something that BB isn't advertising online. I don't know this person 'quikblend' but we have a reference to check...

blahmark 11-19-2012 04:46 AM

I doubt this has the movie money. Release date shows 5/1/2012.

The one w/ movie money at Walmart.com has a release date of 11/06/2012.

DVDBob 11-19-2012 05:04 AM

Was going to pull the trigger on the Amazon deal, but this is better. Ordering for In-Store pickup as I feel like the Movie Money might only be on those versions.

bilditup1 11-19-2012 05:10 AM

Just received a cancellation email from best buy for pickup. Maybe best to just have it shipped.

bilditup1 11-19-2012 05:14 AM

Ordered again, this time with shipping. Estimated arrival not til after thanksgiving

viperloo 11-19-2012 05:48 AM

No go for me. There is no where in the website stating the movie money. Keeping the Walmart 12 dollar theatrical version.

krighton 11-19-2012 06:01 AM

i bought one, i've seen movie stickers stuck on dvds before, so wouldn't surprise me....i don't have any of the LOTR on dvd yet so this one should work fine.

Adding 45 minutes to each movie does NOT make it "better". Two Towers slayed in the theatrical cut. And hell, King was well over 3 1/2 hours in the theatre. And that version went on too long! what did it have, 15 farking endings?

Any chance they'll price adjust for those that ordered at $43.50 last week? I've never tried to price adj at Amazon before.

tranceFusion 11-19-2012 06:37 AM

are these hands down better than the theatrical? or do they drag like most extended cuts? I owned these twice previously and never watched them because I never wanted to sit down and watch them for that long.

Do a chat with an amazon customer rep. But, you may want to wait until stores open to see if this has Movie Money for the Hobbit. If this has movie cash, this is the better deal.

Yes. The extended version is the reworked one with green tint.

confirmed with my local store it does include movie cash good for one ticket to The Hobbit.

To be clear, green tint issue is only on Fellowship of the Ring. When you're watching the film you likely won't care either...but, it is a significant difference [amazon.com]. It appears to be PJ's call on the color timing though.

I read a guide to recolor it a while ago, but can't find it anymore. Any case, I don't think it's a deal-breaker. I remember paying $25 for each extended dvd set years ago.

Agreed. Only film that was unequivocally made better was 'The Two Towers', which is seriously flawed in its theatrical version. The EE of Return of the King is a worse movie, and the EE of Fellowship I would call a worthy, maybe slightly better alternate.

Thats a fairly major color issue lol. The sky looks completely wrong on the extended. I wasnt aware that issue existed. I am kind of glad I got the theatrical now.

Since the web site said nothing of the Hobbit Movie Money I stopped into my local BB, they had probably 2 shelves of them but also, no mention of Hobbit Movie Money. So I'll wait for Amazon or someone and save on tax.

Did you ask an employee? I called my local BB and they verified that it does come with movie money for the Hobbit (enough for 1 ticket through fandango).

Sam4u 11-19-2012 09:23 AM

Just ordered with the free shipping - says it will come in 7 days... will see about the hobbit movie than...
Still good price for the set... Was planning to get these for a while..

Well maybe. I guess it depends where you live. But as far as I know its only $10 worth. Where I live, movies are more than $10 and thats also before fandango fees.

mulliganman 11-19-2012 09:37 AM

Surprised this isn't front page yet since it comes with the movie money. Better deal than the amazon which didn't have the movie money and was front page.

JRJR 11-19-2012 09:58 AM

Now I'm not sure what to do. If I order the Best Buy one for $39.99 and have to pay 7% tax but DON'T get the movie money, then I'm paying more than getting it for the same price, minus tax at Amazon. BUT if I go through ShopDiscover and get 5% cash back at Best Buy and another quarterly online shopping category 5% back, it would make up for the tax I'm paying, even without the movie money, but make the deal even better if it DOES have the movie money. I guess I'll order with instore pickup and take a chance that the movie money would be there and I could always refuse it if it doesn't.

n19htmare 11-19-2012 10:01 AM

Hobbit movie money will be in the form of a sticker on the cover (which has the code on back)
if yours wasn't stickered then it didn't come with it

Yep! I bought this off the amazon deal last week and got through the first two movies, there is a LOT of extra content, like 30-60 minutes for each movie it seemed like. A lot of detailed reasons for why the characters do what they do, not having read all of the books with a fine tooth comb I found it very interesting as a LOTR fan! :bounce:

bugsnest 11-19-2012 10:25 AM

I am not planning to do a thesis on LOTR and highly doubt I would have the time or the energy to sit thru 15 Blu-Ray discs! But purely from an aspect of the movie itself - content, quality of audio and video - would anyone who has experience reccomend this over the theatrical editions? I had purchased the theatrical editions for $14 from the Walmart deal so this would also be about $25 more. Is it worth that for a regular viewer like me?

Bummer. Would've been nice if it had come with it, but, oh well. I had planned on picking it up regardless of it coming with the movie money.

NO. The extended versions are really made for hard core LOTR fans. Some of the additional scenes help to add to the story line, like the interaction between Faramir and Boromir. But I doubt the casual movie goer cares about such things. The extended versions were honestly produced to please hardcore fans, many of whom have read the books.

I don't know how anyone could follow the theatrical cuts movies without having read the books. The extended editions explains a lot more of what and why things are happening.

Nope, I found it in like 4 different areas around the store and none had the sticker. I didn't want to run the risk of possibly having to talk to someone as everytime I do I end up leaving faster than me just wandering around. That was the first time I've been in BB for maybe 2 years or possibly even 3 when I bought my phone. I seriously can't stand that place, I'd rather buy it online from BB.com and have it shipped to me and miss out on the Movie Bucks than deal with them.

I believe the only special features on the Target releases are commentaries

Created a wiki with the 15 disc breakdown.

If this is the same Hobbit movie money that is pictured on eBay LOTR copies, it says "Up to $5.00." I don't know about your theaters, but I don't remember the last time I saw a movie for $5.

The EE editions at Target are particular to Target and are different from other EE editions? If so, strange and lame.

The movies are fairly new, its not like they were done in 1990's. Other than that, extended are just more footage. Im not sure what else you think they would be.

in a crude generalization you can think that, yes, but in actuality that's a misconception. Take Donnie Darko for example. It's made in 2001, not 1990's and yet the blu-ray quality is horrendous. That one needs remastering and it's not even a 90's movie! The problem is the transfer/source. Also some oldies (even movies from before the 70's) that were done on old school lens are amazing today on bluray even without a remaster. Again it all depends on the source and transfer.

As for LoTR theatrical, that's not only a bare bones bluray but it has an inferior transfer. It's still better than DVD quality of course because it's 1080, etc. But the Extended Edition's transfer was done significantly better. Only quips is the slight green tint but apparently that was done on purpose. If you have a quality display then you will definitely see a difference between the theatrical and extended.

someone31988 11-19-2012 12:58 PM

If they would come out with an extended edition set on Blu-Ray without all of the extras for a cheaper price, I'd buy them. I'm not a big enough fan to want all of this.

Raven1245 11-19-2012 01:05 PM

The Walmart deal was only $12 for the regular editions. I'm sure once they're shipped in early December, you'll be able to find them on CL or ebay for cheap prices. I know I'm selling mine on CL so I can put the money toward buying the extended editions. I mostly bought the $12 regular editions for the $8 Hobbit movie ticket voucher.

bluray can hold 9 hours of a specific bitrate for a movie. LoTR bitrate on the other hand is really high + multi track lossless audio = 2 disc per movie. Most people (and i know i would) rather have very high quality film over multi discs with superior audio/video rather than jampack it into 1 disc and have a sacrifice. If you're going for bluray you will want/expect the best possible. If your okay with sacrfices here and there that's where the Theatrical or DVD versions come in.

GrandmasterBBC 11-19-2012 01:18 PM

Tough call here. I already have the extended DVD box set, which I have watched many times. Sure, blueray is going to look much better, but I'm not sure that I need it that badly. The DVD version still looks pretty darn good. If it came with Hobbit money and still had the digital download available, I would probably jump on it.

icejust 11-19-2012 01:34 PM

I'll bite. Thanks for the deal!

FreeSecks 11-19-2012 01:35 PM

I recently preordered the $12 theatrical blu-ray set from Wal-Mart. I know there is a difference in content compared to the extended version but is there a difference in quality? If so, I'd definitely shoot for this deal.

Frodo, don't wear the ring
I know it's very tempting
Yes, you will appear to disappear
But the dark riders, they'll know you're there
Yes, lord Sauron has many spies (many spies have many eyes)

One ring to bind them, to find them, one ring to rule them all
One ring to bind them, one to find them, one ring to rule them all!
Yeah, little Frodo!
You've got to rule them!
Frodo, rule them with the ring!
Come on, rule them with your ring, yeah!
[ Lyrics from: http://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/..._ring.html ]
"Lord Sauron has many spies, and beasts, and birds"
"If you want him, come and claim him!"
"Do they, Gandalf?"
"I'm not a conjurer of cheap tricks!"
"I can't carry the ring, but I can carry you, Mr. Frodo"
"You have my sword"
"And my bow"
"And my axe"
*speaks elfish*

"Mordor!"
"We'll never make it! There's thousands of them and only nine of us!"
"Ohhhh..."
"We made it!"
"Hooray! We made it!"

Hey Frodo, what you doing wearing the ring?
All powerful jewellery, is that your new thing?
I know it's hard when you're little more than 3 foot 4
Your little ass so close to the floor
Trying to lead your fellows to the gates of Mordor
The fellowship
Yeah, the fellowship
I don't rap about bitches and hoes, I rap about witches and trolls
Just passing on the words of the Elven king,
Wisdom to all
Frodo! Don't wear the ring!

Frodo, don't wear the ring!
The magical bling bling
You'll never be the Lord of the Rings

I guess everyone has a different tolerance of sacrifice. Even the extended editions are compressed, so the video quality is being reduced (even though its probably unnoticeable). The question is, how much more would they have had to cut in order to fit on one disc?

I'm not a die hard LOTR fan, but I enjoy the series and desire maximum bluray quality. I would have preferred they trim just enough bitrate/scenes to fit each movie on one disc, but nothing beyond that. I would even accept a 10-15% bitrate reduction in order to avoid swapping discs.

I guess I desire an "extended within reason" edition.

Oh Goddamnit I just bought this at Amazon...

If your BB doesn't have the hobbit movie cash you're not out anything really. With tax, they are almost the same for me without the hobbit cash.

slee75 11-19-2012 02:33 PM

When I bought the Christopher Nolan boxset over the summer, it had a $8 voucher for a Dark Knight Rises ticket. People were ripping them w/o buying the boxset which made it a pain in the ass to find a boxet with the voucher in tact. I'm guessing the same thing will happen here since you don't actually need anything from the receipt to use the voucher.

amazon just made their lightning deal better with this ==>
http://slickdeals.net/permadeal/83422/amazon.com-amazon-5-off-25-promotional-credit

playsoccer123 11-19-2012 04:25 PM

Good deal, but I'm fine with the earlier Walmart theatrical edition with money toward Hobbit movie =)

FoxMcCloud 11-19-2012 04:34 PM

Just picked mine up from the store. It did not have the movie money. However, looking at what I picked up this is the original set that came out in 2011. There was another set that came out in 2012. Not sure if that is why those picking up at stores are not getting the movie money or not.

Sariana57 11-19-2012 04:43 PM

Thank you! My husband will LOVE this! It says that it is the disc set released in May of 2012, so I hope that it will be the new one.

pixiestix1 11-19-2012 04:55 PM

Thank you my boyfriend has been asking for this!

mulliganman 11-19-2012 05:25 PM

Had the employee open the set up on my instore pickup. No movie money. With the $5 off $25 from amazon promo credit their lightning deal is the best deal on the extended set.

MadAdder 11-19-2012 05:39 PM

In for one. Good deal! They wanted to charge tax so I opted for in-store pickup. It still had the $99.99 price tag on it. Was quite gratifying.

Coolchu 11-19-2012 05:43 PM

I am waiting for Amazon's gold box. Combined with the $2 off $25; it's only $35! :-D

Target is offering the each extended disk for $10 each ($30 for all three). What's the advantage of buying this deal versus buying each movie separately?

I bought those version from Target. They are simple extended edition of each movie which just come with 2 discs in each box, the box art is simple as well since it's just the enlarged ring with the name of each movie in the middle of the ring, and the only extra are 4 types of commentaries in each movie. So if anyone does not care for the extra 15 discs set and all the fancy box art work that the other editions come with this is perfect. I already have the regular dvds and the only extended version I ever got was Return of the King. So I don't care for the box art work and the extra features, which I'm never going to watch now since I never saw those on the DVD either.

Do note that The Two Towers and Return of the King do come with The Hobbit money of up to $5.00 off one admission that is valid from 12/14/12-12/30/12. Fellowship of The Ring did not have the hobbit money.

Also for those wondering where you can see this deal it is in store only. Target has it as part of their "Beat The Rush" sale they have going on right now through Turkey day. They did not advertise it and I didn't see it online until I was in store. So your YMMV depending on how well stocked the Target is but I did see quite a bit of copies of each movie.

CFLacky 11-19-2012 07:34 PM

Target has each of the Extended movies for $10.00 each (no bonus discs), but each comes with $5.00 hobbit cash. For those who don't care about the "bonus" discs.

falleng0d 11-19-2012 07:39 PM

Theres just no way id buy the extended versions knowing how screwed up color is on the fellowship. : /

crazed_ss 11-19-2012 08:09 PM

Guess ill jump in on his...

slee75 11-19-2012 08:34 PM

You should jump on the Target Blu-Rays then. Only $10 per movie through Wednesday and they're the extended editions w/o a lot of the extra features (see post 171).

What's the difference between the 2011 and 2012 releases? Any content changes?

The chatter online is that the 2012 version just omits the digital copy codes that were included with the 2011 version (and are theoretically expired).

I thought Towers was awesome in the theatre. of course, I didnt read the books.

the steelbooks of the individual movies( as well as a bunch of harry potters too) have $5 hollywood movie money.

Rev2S 11-20-2012 08:56 AM

Just bought it from Amazon. I had a $5 off promotion thing through Amazon to bring it to $34.99. Great price!

mroldboy 11-20-2012 09:55 AM

I thought the green tint issue was resolved with later versions of the set. Or was that just what everyone assumed would happen?

Dicka24 11-20-2012 10:05 AM

I just ordered it from Amazon for $39.99

I got an email today from Best Buy saying that the item was back ordered and it will arrive between December 7 and December 20.My local best buy had this in stock .I chatted with a best buy rep and asked her whether my order could be converted from an online order to a store pickup and she did it for me.Got the new confirmation in about 15 minutes that my order is ready to be picked up.Going to pick it up after work today.

Same for me. My local store now has it in stock. They didn't when I placed the order. I had also paid for faster shipping and they are just going to give me a gift card for the difference.
