The hard drive enclosed in the other one is the Seagate Barracuda ST3000DL001 [newegg.com] Hard drive while this one has a Seagate ST3000DM001 [newegg.com]. It also doesn't have the backup software the other one had. However, if you don't care about that, this one is a better deal in my opinion. Both are 7200 RPM

Update: Other drive had a 2 year warranty while this one has a 1 year.

Warranty is only 1 year. Some are claiming 14 months in comments, but definitely not 2 years.

For those planning on taking this out of the enclosure (and thus ruining the warranty), you might want to consider running an error check on the drive before taking it out. You would hate to take it out, find that it's a dud drive and then not be able to return it.

I was so mad that I couldn't get the $80 3TB externals from Staples or Office Depot earlier in the year. I was hesitant at the $100 drive from earlier today.. I think I'll get three of these 3TB drives at $10 cheaper per drive.

The good news is now I have no excuse not to build my two spare computers. I can put in a small OS hard drive and a larger 1tb or 1.5tb hard drive for storage and sell on craigslist.

Well if you plan on breaking them out of the enclosure, the internal is the same as the other 3TB for $99, so it is up to you.

Do they sell eSATA cables that work with this type of drive? I can't tell what type of connection it has on the enclosure. I don't have USB3.0 but I do have a eSATA slot.

l'd have gotten this if i didn't just get the buffalo 2 tb for the $10 more at fry's. Tried to cxl but was too late and just too lazy to ship it back for refund.

Cracking one of these open to liberate the drive clearly invalidates the warranty as an external drive, but do you still get a year (or whatever length) on the drive itself. Does Seagate track which drives went into externals?

That is all i found to dismantle this one. Apparently it will most likely break the enclosure, something that doesn't seem as likely with the other seagate drive.

The $99 deal is for the Backup Plus deal with 2 yr warranty, both are still external drives...

I am saying inside the external is this drive.

This is a better deal than the one from earlier this morning unless you really need that adapter. The enclosure on the Backup Plus is no better than this one - both are awful with little to no ventilation and extended heavy usage in any one sitting could damage the drive because of heat.

Getting the case destroyedto take out the drive is a no go for me. Seagate drives don't scream reliability and 1 year is not enough for me to risk it.

Remember these are ONE YEAR warranty. Don't buy three then realize your drive died in a year and a few days after warranty.

There's no point taking these drives apart for the drive only because these 3.0 drives have a different interface than normal Sata.

I have the 2TB version of this drive and it's been rock solid. I paid $99 last month, so $89 for the 3TB is a truly slick deal. There are reports that Windows 7 64-bit doesn't get along with the 3TB version--it'll unmount or go into a power save mode at awkward times--which is why I opted for the 2TB.

If anyone has experience with the 3TB drive using Win7-64 please let me know if it's working smoothly for you. I still have time to return the 2TB to Amazon. :)

My only complaint is that the Seagate software never worked -- as in, the setup to install their backup software would crash the moment I'd run it. Luckily I had a copy of Acronis True Image 2011 sitting around that both installed and ran flawlessly. With the USB 3.0, backups are lickety-split.

EDIT: Should also mention you can get a 3-year Squaretrade warranty [amazon.com] on these from Amazon for less than $14, if the Seagate warranty is a concern.
