Seagate Expansion 3TB External Drive for $89.99
1 Attachment(s)
http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Exp...282_a1_2_p
Not the backup plus, but still a great deal! The hard drive enclosed in the other one is the Seagate Barracuda ST3000DL001 [newegg.com] Hard drive while this one has a Seagate ST3000DM001 [newegg.com]. It also doesn't have the backup software the other one had. However, if you don't care about that, this one is a better deal in my opinion. Both are 7200 RPM Update: Other drive had a 2 year warranty while this one has a 1 year. |

TRY STAPLES PRICE MATCH< some have gotten the deal even after amazon was OOS 7200rpm Seagate Barracuda - 2yr warranty Warranty is only 1 year. Some are claiming 14 months in comments, but definitely not 2 years. For those planning on taking this out of the enclosure (and thus ruining the warranty), you might want to consider running an error check on the drive before taking it out. You would hate to take it out, find that it's a dud drive and then not be able to return it. CrystalDiskInfo http://crystalmark.info/software/CrystalDiskInfo/index-e.html |

what's the difference between this one and the backup plus that is going for $99 at Best Buy and Costco? Same 3 TB capacity
|
Don't know I got both just in case lol

pretty sure the performance is slightly different as well, but you wouldn't notice |

Damn it. Paid 130$ on October 8th, past the 30day mark.

good?m m,

Just about to post this, you beat me to it. Seems like a pretty decent price for 3TB!
|
got one - thanks!!

|
7200RPM or 5400RPM?
|
is there any diff on the HDD inside, anyone?
|
In for one.
If anyone's interested, wiru on FW bought this earlier in the year and pried it open: Seagate Barracuda 7200 3 TB 7200RPM SATA 6 Gb/s NCQ 64MB Cache 3.5-Inch Internal Bare Drive ST3000DM001 |
Think mine is a repost :(
|
In for one.
|
Ugh only 1 year warranty??? What to do what to do....
|
in 4 one, guess I'll sell a 2TB drive to cover most of it
|
Just got one and came here to post. Guess I am slow. It has been in my Amazon cart for quite some time and got the note when I checked in. Good price, but mixed reviews.
|
wow for once i get in on this frontpage deal early. this deal is even better than the plus deal because it's the same internal drive for 10 less.
|
Definitely a better deal than the other thread. In for one!

I was so mad that I couldn't get the $80 3TB externals from Staples or Office Depot earlier in the year. I was hesitant at the $100 drive from earlier today.. I think I'll get three of these 3TB drives at $10 cheaper per drive.
The good news is now I have no excuse not to build my two spare computers. I can put in a small OS hard drive and a larger 1tb or 1.5tb hard drive for storage and sell on craigslist. |
Thanks OP. This is smoking hot!
|
ARGGGGGG.. freaking travel (nobody at home to pick up..).. I can't buy any of these drivers.... good price.. :-/
|
Tempting as usual.
I have a used 3TB seagate that is loud, but has been solid so far. $90 isn't bad if you can put the drive through it's paces to see if it dies in the first 72 hours. |
Is it worth getting the Square trade warranty? $8 for 2 years.
|
thanks ordered 4
|
i bought this same hard drive 3 weeks ago very happy with it
|
Just grabbed it. Thanks!
|
Great price. Got it for $45 with the chase rewards points I had available....at the checkout...use ur rewards card to pay and it will ask you if you would like to link the card directly to amazon to redeem your rewards points.
|
Just saw this change in my cart and came here to post it. But to late.
Any way I am in for one. This will be my first external Segate HD. |
nvm, double post

This drive powered via USB or one needs a power adapter?
|
Wow...was seriously pissed that I didn't get in on the other one (had 4 in my cart but OOS during checkout). This is even better for me since I don't need the software. Thanks OP!
|
Already do have a 3 TB drive by the way but its always good to have a backup drive for your priceless data (pictures, family videos etc).
|
Great Deal
Best price I've ever seen on a 3TB. Never saw one for less than $99. Even $99 was super rare after the flood. Good to see the prices coming back to earth on these. Thanks OP!

Will getting the squaretrade 2yr warranty and paying with AMEX give me 4 years in total?

Hmmm I'm thinking of buying 3 of these 3TB drives but am not sure which ones I should get.
|
Buy using your credit card and you will get the automatic, built-in EXTRA YEAR warranty.

Do they sell eSATA cables that work with this type of drive? I can't tell what type of connection it has on the enclosure. I don't have USB3.0 but I do have a eSATA slot.
Thanks |

So with the squaretrade does the warranty equal 3 years?

Can I take this apart and out it in my computer as internal hard drive ?

well, you can still add 2 year extra warranty for $8

|
l'd have gotten this if i didn't just get the buffalo 2 tb for the $10 more at fry's. Tried to cxl but was too late and just too lazy to ship it back for refund.
|
Now to decide. get this one or the $99 one.
|
I'm sticking with the 99 dollar one, at least the other one I can still put it back together..This one seems to destroy the case when you open it...
|
Just cancelled the earlier order and re ordered this one instead. It's a $40 saving for me since I will crack open the case to void the warranty anyway. no tax, free two day shipping. sweet.
As long as the hard drive inside has no difference in quality, just longer warranty I won't use. |
Bought two
I really can't resist this price. Thanks OP |

http://bucks.blogs.nytimes.com/20...arranties/ All four card networks — MasterCard, Visa, American Express and Discover — offer programs that extend existing manufacturer’s warranties on at least some of their cards, generally for up to 12 months and for amounts up to $10,000. (Rules for warranty extensions are set by the card networks, rather than the issuing banks, said Odysseas Papadimitriou, chief executive of CardHub.) But only American Express and Discover offer extended warranties to all cardholders, the study found. Those networks ranked first and second, respectively, in CardHub’s overall rankings for that reason. |

How did you get 5% from Discover? TIA |
Quote:
That is all i found to dismantle this one. Apparently it will most likely break the enclosure, something that doesn't seem as likely with the other seagate drive. So can someone tell me if the squaretrade warranty is extending it to 3 years or just a double warranty for 1 year with the manufacturer one and then the last (second) year is just squaretrade? |

Just bought one. You're not going to find a better deal for 3TB and 3.0 USB.. If you do, it can't be much better. To top it off its from Amazon.

I am saying inside the external is this drive. |
This is a better deal than the one from earlier this morning unless you really need that adapter. The enclosure on the Backup Plus is no better than this one - both are awful with little to no ventilation and extended heavy usage in any one sitting could damage the drive because of heat.
|
missed out on the earlier one. in for 2
|
Got one already and thinking about getting another to rip out and put in my storage server, not sure about having warrantyless drives though
|
Sweet!!
|
Quote:
Since I live in NY, I have to pay tax anyway. I'll get 5% CB through Chase at BB and an extra year on the warranty. Also, the BB one seems to be easier to remove from the enclosure. |

This month is 5% for online purchases. You just need to register the card. Go to the Discover website. |

|
Getting the case destroyedto take out the drive is a no go for me. Seagate drives don't scream reliability and 1 year is not enough for me to risk it.
|
Cancelled my other order and replaced this, warranty will be voided by me anyway since I'm swapping out some old 1tb drives for this.

Quote:
|
Has anyone been able to get free one day shipping using Discover? It's saying item is not eligible, but it worked with the backup plus.

Better deal is a better. Although Seagate suck so bad you gonna find complains no matter what price it is.

For those planning on taking this out of the enclosure (and thus ruining the warranty), you might want to consider running a stress test on the drive before taking it out. You would hate to take it out, find that it's a dud drive and then not be able to return it.
|
Does the internal drive not have a warrenty? I know some that i've bought in the past did

Thanks, was going to wait for bf but now I can focus on other purchases that day.

|
Got 2. you can never have enough external hard drives
|
Remember these are ONE YEAR warranty. Don't buy three then realize your drive died in a year and a few days after warranty.
There's no point taking these drives apart for the drive only because these 3.0 drives have a different interface than normal Sata. |
*sighs* just bought 2. Last time I bought some they were $110!
|
lol, so many disk hungry guys here... don't eat 3tb for dinner...
|
Seagate ST3000DM001 inside... 7200 RPM 64MB Cache.
|
for $10 extra we can get 2 year warranty instead of 1... hmm, i think i will save the $10 now, since in 2 yrs (assuming your CC gives you 1 extra yr of warranty on this drive):
1. this drive may still be running 2. at that time, you can probably use this $10 for the next big drive at that era e.g. 6TB-12TB at $100? |

TESTIMONIAL:
I have the 2TB version of this drive and it's been rock solid. I paid $99 last month, so $89 for the 3TB is a truly slick deal. There are reports that Windows 7 64-bit doesn't get along with the 3TB version--it'll unmount or go into a power save mode at awkward times--which is why I opted for the 2TB. If anyone has experience with the 3TB drive using Win7-64 please let me know if it's working smoothly for you. I still have time to return the 2TB to Amazon. :) My only complaint is that the Seagate software never worked -- as in, the setup to install their backup software would crash the moment I'd run it. Luckily I had a copy of Acronis True Image 2011 sitting around that both installed and ran flawlessly. With the USB 3.0, backups are lickety-split. EDIT: Should also mention you can get a 3-year Squaretrade warranty [amazon.com] on these from Amazon for less than $14, if the Seagate warranty is a concern. |
Someone mentioned "running an error check on the drive before taking it out", any recommendation on software to use? Thanks

This is a good deal! The Seagate 3TB Plus is also a good for some. The Plus can be used with the Seagate Thunderbolt adapter and for $10 more, I'd rather go with the Plus. Now is just a matter of time for the Seagate Thunderbolt adapter to go on sale.

nice price, wish I needed the space. I break em out as use em as internal drives. But I'm good for now. :)

Got 1 and fought the temptation to buy more. The prices will probaly touch this this again anon.
I'm sure it'll work on Mac OS X, too. I have a 3TB Hitachi drive in a USB 2.0/eSATA enclosure that works fine on my 'tosh. Thanks for the heads up, OP! |
isn't it funny? same link has over 100 bucks for 2 TB but 90 bucks for 3 TB.. Grabbed it :D
|
In for 1 as a backup drive. It better not fail. I've avoided Seagate for YEARS, but the 3 TB drives from WD aren't getting the best reviews either.
|
Really torn here. I want internal drives but I'm scared to buy these and put them internal due to the problems I've had with the last couple of Seagate drives I've purchased...
