Awesome deal for someone just trying to get a first taste of Android tablets. The Big Lots 30-day return policy makes this zero-risk.

No problem :)

I have been looking at low-cost Big Lot tablets and think that the D2 for $20 more may be the better purchase. It has 1GB RAM (the Uniden has 512MB) and there is active ROM development for it.

Jaylep 11-18-2012 10:27 AM

I bought two of these yesterday and they rang up at the sale price then. Ive been looking for something cheap for my kids for Christmas. The tablets come in white or black. I was able to install Google Play on them and they do pretty good at running the apps. The amazon app store is already loaded on it. Load time is good and videos play fine. For some reason I cannot get Netflix or Hulu to play video but videos look good via YouTube. Games like angry birds play great with no lag. Capacitative screen is good. These tablets are the same as the Polaroid tablets only branded Uniden via Southern Telecom. Only con I've noticed so far is there is only one speaker on the back and it's not too loud. If you we're to put this in a case, the speaker would be completely covered...

chucky_larms 11-18-2012 12:44 PM

Thanks. I wonder if I should pick this one up for my wife. Mostly for Internet/FB/email...

Here's a video review of it online. Looks pretty decent for $60. Start at 2:28 to skip the crap.

looking at the review : http://www.youtube.com/watch?feat...K34#t=142s

Doesnt seema like a stable device as we load more apps. I will stay away from this !

For kids/starters... good device for the price.

Download Amazon Apps, they have a free "paid app of the day" every day. And use a microSD card, that way you can run hundreds of apps without any lag. Big thing on this is to turn off wifi when you're not using it. Some fun games to get that aren't memory hogs are Stupid Zombies 1 and 2, Backflip Madness, Jewels (any version), Field Goal, and LB2 Bowling. Enjoy.

Bought two today. love it. Can't get video to work with Skype though. Anyone else tried? Everything else is great for $60.

duhh 11-18-2012 07:00 PM

I know its a goofy question, but are these compatible with all micro usb cables? The reason I ask is that the usb port for the 4" variant is set a bit deeper in the device than your average device. Its effectively proprietary due to the fact that the end of the cable sticks out from the jacket an additional 2-3 mm more than your average usb cable.

I've got like 15+ different types of micro usb cables and the only one that will charge the UTAB430 (without holding the cable in) is the one that came with it. It makes me sad.

If you have that many, get a utility razor blade, and carefully cut back the plastic jacket at the end of the mSD cord to allow for a tighter fit.

Google play review is full of comments from people complaining about this very issue for the last 3 releases or so. I had the same problem on a visual land prestige. Try version 1.8.1. I found a link on XDA devs, which I would count as semi reliable. I uninstalled the current ver, installed 1.8.1 and everything worked. If that does fix your problem, ensure you set netflix not to auto update :)

Sorry, that's a popular android website that I assume everyone with an android device knows about. Since I'm not sure about the linking rules to various different sites, you can google "[Request] Netflix v1.8.1", the first link is the one containing the apk I used.

i think my card is broken lol.. i tried the sd card my wife had in her phone and i could explore it instantly. mine is also an HC type and it doesnt get recognized.

i also have a 16gb in my contour, im going to go try that. if not im going to go return it today and get the 79$ tablet and see how that one is and if i can 'feel' the difference in them. so far i like this for browsing, but i dont know of any intensive games to really test the hardware..

Try Temple Run. Very tough game to run on any but the latest tablets.

Don't believe this has a GPS.

Just bought 2 for the kids for Christmas. Now they can stop harassing me for my phone. This is by far the best tablet for the price I have found for kids or light web surfing/play. For anyone looking for a few more options the iRulu [amazon.com] can be had for about $20 more shipped.

LaymonsWay 11-19-2012 10:50 AM

as for free flashy games... what are more?

http://southerntelecom.com/uniden...index.html

1) Find and download an .apk file to your computer.
(2) Connect your Uniden tablet via USB to your computer and copy the .apk file into your tablet memory or SD card memory (drag and drop or copy and paste).
(3) Safely eject your Uniden tablet and disconnect it from the computer.
(4) In the Tablet apps menu, select the app called, "ApkInstaller".
(5) Press the "Menu" button on the tablet.
(6) Select "Install".
(7) Locate the .apk file you've just transferred to the tablet and select it.
(8) Select "Install"
(9) Select "Install" again.

Google does not recommend any task killing applications in android 2.2 and above. Google Play is all you need. It has free apps.

This is very much you get what you pay for tablet. Expect problems and no support. It's fine for young kids but don't expect to do much of anything on this you would a real tablet like a Nexus 7. I would equate this more to a large phone of 2+ years ago than a modern tablet.

I use es task manager occasionally -- sometimes the kids don't exit out of their games, but they've gotten better about this. If these are like the Polaroid 7" tabs (I've purchased 10 from Kohls), then they're great for kids who just want to play games or watch movies, and I would describe them exactly as you have, a big phone.

I'm guessing it's model UTAB71, nothing on the southertelecom [southerntelecom.com]site, except for registering your tablet, which lists UTAB430 (the 4.3") and UTAB71. Looks like the UTAB430 was $60 earlier this month, so this a bigger screen at the same price.

The forum linked by DennisFranz has another link to http://www.the-digital-reader.com...I3CKWdP9a4 which worked for me. Very simple.

I've been playing around with this tablet since last night. It's ok. The screen seems decent enough. I got it with the sole purpose of using as a giant XBMC remote. It seems to not run certain things of the xbmc remote at full screen though. Not entirely sure why. Also I can't seem to get chrome to work, but dolphin does. I didn't look too much into it though, could be a simple fix. I wouldn't recommend this as a primary tablet that you're going to use all the time, but for basic things, like I am using it for, it seems to work fine.

Krakn3Dfx 11-19-2012 02:21 PM

Runs Temple Run like a champ, also tried out Extreme Road Trip 2 and it worked great. This is quite the deal for $60 to be sure.

Watching a twitch.tv stream @480p on it and it looks and runs way better than it has any right to be for a $60 tablet, lol.

Maybe I just had expectations so low going in that I had no choice but to be impressed.

Krakn3Dfx 11-19-2012 03:02 PM

About to try it out, but word on the street is the Netflix 1.8.1 will work on this. You can download it here [dropbox.com]

Update: I can confirm this works. Loaded up Netflix, logged in and started a movie without a problem.

I'm contemplating going to pick up 2-3 more as Xmas gifts at this point. It's no iPad or Nexus, but for the price, I dunno that you can beat what it's able to do as a tablet.

Great. I just purchased a Nexus 7 from the Sears deal. I'll try them both out over this long weekend and do a direct compare. Although I could get three of these for the price of one Nexus.

I'm mainly looking for web surfing, fantasy football, email, Skype, FB, apps for kids, movies on plane, etc... Sounds like the Uniden will work fine.

Krakn3Dfx 11-19-2012 03:34 PM

Also, Google Chrome doesn't seem to work, at least not for me. Not a huge deal, although Chrome is a real nice browser, so hopefully an update somewhere along the line will get it working.

Netflix streams very well. The Internet is slow to load pages but not terrible..not sure if that may be the browser or just the tablet. Skype works very well. I'm very impressed. This is no Nexus 7 and should never be compared to such but for a beginner tablet or one for kids, this is an incredible value. I also moved all apps to a mini SD card which may help speed issues. I ordered the HKC tablets from Walmart for $100 each last week as I was looking for a budget tablet for my kids so I'll have to see how they compare. These may work out...

Its a little better than you think.. its no nexus..but it has its place for certain people/teens/older adults for a very budget tablet for music, video and basic gaming... also as a cheap ereader with extra functions... I agree with your ICS task killer comment...but with this tablet ive found it to help out a little, not sure why...bc ICS should be able to manage apps without having to kill them... but I guess there are some exceptions...

---- also anyone checking out the pmid4311 (polaroid/uniden/emerson 4.3 inch) for 48 at big lots right now and for 44 on black friday... here is my little info on testing it out... its going to be about the same as the 7inch posted in here but the smaller form factor.. might work well for kids who want a smaller one than a 7 inch...

New to the tablet world. How does this compare to the Nook Tablet? We bought the refurbished Nook Tablet yesterday that was on sale for $99. Would this tablet be comparable for my 6 year old, or should I stick with the Nook? Thanks! :)

Sweetnesz 11-19-2012 05:49 PM

i used these 3 apps and technically not overclocking more like using its full potential...
1 root checker.
2 superuser.
3 overclock widget.

well this being about 40% less in price... its the better value for a 6 year old IMO...but the nook tablet is clearly the better table at not bad for $90... personally I would get this tablet and see how it works for him (youll have to tinker either one... adding the market to this one is easy... and side loding apps is easy as well - with the nook youll have to work a little bit more to put CM9/10 on it to get the most out of it)... if this one isnt up to his liking then return it with receipt within 30 days and you can always get a refurb or pre owned nook tablet for about 80-90...

I ordered the HKC tablets from Walmart for $100 each last week as I was looking for a budget tablet for my kids so I'll have to see how they compare. These may work out...

I was also looking at that tablet, tell us how it compares.

Thanks for the input. I think I will go pick one of these up tomorrow and compare the two when the Nook comes in. If anything, I can keep the Uniden for my 6 year old and the Nook for myself!

Watching a twitch.tv stream @480p on it and it looks and runs way better than it has any right to be for a $60 tablet, lol.

Maybe I just had expectations so low going in that I had no choice but to be impressed.

That's impressive for a tablet with 512mb of ram. Sometimes having a lower resolution screen frees up processing power to the gpu.

How's the off axis viewing angles on the screen? And what's the quality/feel while using it?

Evo-IC 11-19-2012 09:57 PM

Thumbs up here.
This is done in the exact same vein as I post my ChinaTab deals in.

Solid value, exceptional price, and extra perks - for no extra charge.

Downside is:
Low Resolution 800x480
No Bluetooth
No GPS

Bluetooth and GPS should NEVER be expected at this pricepoint.
Low resolution is an easy trade-off here and so is the less-than-stellar (likely) battery life.

Upside is:
Just about everything else.

Repped +4, OP.

Geeke19 11-19-2012 11:18 PM

waiting for my sd card to get here tomorrow so I can move all my apps on to it. Will give this tablet until Thursday, I don't fully getting into liking it back it goes to get my money back.

iheartlondon 11-19-2012 11:35 PM

just bought this for my SDET husband for Christmas. he loves it which is impressive because he's a total snob. he was genuinely happy. there's a super funny youtube unboxing vid under "airhartpro" u should watch it.

i'd love to figure out how to use my google voice to make calls. I got it loaded in apps, but I can't figure out how to make a call. it says it's "integrated with android 4.0 visual voicemail" but I don't know what that is.

I wish I got a white one.

I wonder if it has touch calibration cuz it's a pressure touch screen and I have a light touch due to my persistant iphone usage for the last many years.

also, the return policy on this is until January 15, 2013 due to the hellidays.

gt5oh 11-19-2012 11:43 PM

How fast can this really be at 1 Ghz.

I find my touchpad running slow at times and thats a dual core..

JameyJ 11-19-2012 11:57 PM

I bought two and will take one back tomorrow, but thumbs-up and reps for the OP.

For $60, it's a pretty good deal but not great and, I have to say, it's not as nice as the china-tab I got from one of Evo-ICs posts for about the same price: http://slickdeals.net/f/4746264-7-Tablet-Android-4-0-Capacitive-Screen-1-2Ghz-CPU-Supports-Skype-Supports-Google-Play-Market-Free-Shipping-67-99-with-Coupon-Code-ships-from-USA?t=4746264 Even though I knew the processor on that one says it's 1.2Ghz, and this one is only 1GHz, I was surprised that it the chinatab is noticeably faster than this Uniden.

It's a good cheap tablet but there are a couple things I don't particularly like. Unlike tablets like the ipad, touchpad and others, the screen on this is recessed below a bezel instead of the glass going all the way to the edges. Not a dealbreaker, but it makes touching things at the edges of the screen a little tough because there's a raised frame around the screen.

Also, just so potential buyers know, there are no volume buttons on the side of the tablet like there are on other tablets I've used

Finally, the fact that iheartlondon says "it's a pressure touch screen and I have a light touch due to my persistant iphone usage for the last many years." should tell you something about this tablet. Despite the fact that this tablet has a capacitive screen, just like the iphone does, the screen on the Uniden almost seems like it's a resistive screen when compared to other tablets

The response to touch seems to lag. On a number of occasions, I tapped things a 2nd time, thinking that it hadn't read my first tap, only to find that it was just moving slowly and had actually registered my original tap. So yeah, pretty good deal but not good enough for me to keep two of them. I'll take one back, use the other, and keep my eyes peeled for more $60 tablet deals in the future.

touchpad slow on what specifically? @ 1.2 I find it to be very fast...and overclocked to 1.6 its never had a problem on CM9.... have you checked your processor settings to be on performance vs on demand? and or have you overclocked it at all?

as far as the big lots unit...
ive found it to lag on 720p video a little bit...480p was fine... but as far as most games I tried and apps it was decent for the money... if you are an average user I think it will be ok... if you are a power user well then you should invest in a better tablet for an overall better experience... Im a power/heavy user...so mine is going back... but thats not to say its not decent for the price...but it all depends on your usage needs...

I have noticed the wifi being more spotty today than when I was testing it yesterday... so make sure you fully test it under all conditions when you get it so you can decide if its good enough or not cutting it...

Hello,
would this be a good table to be used for skype calls?

MrXindeed 11-20-2012 09:22 AM

I love it!
Added the Google Market and Netflix 1.8.1 per instructions.
From the market I added Skype, and Firefox.
Also added TV Stream [google.com]
Does everything I need for a portable device.
For $60 you can't beat it.

There are several on Ebay [ebay.com]. Just search Uniden 7" Tablet and you'll find them. Otherwise, I don't think you'll find this exact same tablet anywhere else. I've looked too.

I just picked up 2 for the kids and having been playing around with it for the last hour. For $60 it's definitely worth it.

I already have a Nexus 7, tranformer prime, original Transformer 101 and here are some quick observations.

Multitouch works pretty well, I notice a difference with the fonts probably because of the 400x800 but is very usable. just not as crisp as my other tablets. I havent installed chrome yet but the stock browser is a little slower. This is a steal for $60. I didn't expect it to perform this nicely.

The whole tablet is plastic feely and a lot thicker than the nexus 7 but the uniden feels lighter.

shikado 11-20-2012 04:13 PM

I have both and I can tell you that there's no comparison. Like many said, it's a great starter tablet.
The biggest let down for me are:
Screen resolution: comparing this thing to other higher end tablets is like watching a big screen tv and you got a standard DVD running 480p and other HD source running 1080i/1080p. If you never have a tablet (ie. remember when you bought your first LCD/Plasma to replace your old crt unit?), I think you will be okay with the resolution.
Build quality: This thing didn't even bother trying to hide it's $70 price tag. Everything on the outside feels cheap and scream out "toy" instead of "tablet".
Responsiveness: Somewhat a bit laggy here and there. Otherwise, it works fine and I've never experienced crash from playing with it for 4+ hrs.

The GOOD:
Battery - confirmed 4+ hrs. I think it's more like 6 hrs but never really timed it.
No heat issue. the tablet only feels a bit warm with extend use.

Over all, I think this is a great bargain tablet intended for kids and adults who want to jump into a tablet scene but are not sure what their needs are.

I'm mainly looking for web surfing, fantasy football, email, Skype, FB, apps for kids, movies on plane, etc... Sounds like the Uniden will work fine.

They won't need to. There are apps from pbs kids and nick jr you can download, which are optimized for tablets. The website games are optimized for larger screens, and may not be as smooth. There are thousands of apps for kids, and Amazon App Store offers a free paid app of the day - many times a very good kids app. They'll love this tablet.

davlin 11-20-2012 08:12 PM

I have been playing with this tablet the whole day. The resolution isn't that great, and it lags. Other than that, you get what you paid for at $60.

how do i download apps without "rooting"? is there an app store that's already pre installed like amazon store ?

Thanks.

Go to your browser on your tablet, and pull up this site. Then you can download Amazon App Store:
http://amazonappstore.en.softonic.com/android

For Google Play Store Apps:
Step one: Set up your device to use Google Play
To use Google Play to download Android apps, you'll need to have a Google account with a Google email (either Gmail or a Google-hosted domain) associated with your phone or tablet. Follow these steps to add an existing Google account to your device or create a new Google account for use with Google Play:

Turn on your device and tap the Google Play Store app.
If you haven't added an email account to your device, you'll be prompted to "Add a Google Account."
Follow the instructions on the device, which will walk you through either signing into an existing Google account or creating a new Google account.
Once you have added your existing Google account or created a new account, you'll be able to use Google Play to download Android apps.

Keep in mind that if you intend to purchase apps, you'll also need to make sure your Google account is set up for use with Google Wallet.

I was also looking at that tablet, tell us how it compares.

I got the HKC today and it is so much better than the Uniden, but it is $40 more. No doubt the Uniden is good for the money, but the more I used it the more slow it became. The HKC has 1gb of RAM compared to 512 mb in the Uniden, which does make a difference. The Unidens I bought are going back but for $60, they are still okay. You feel the difference in the HKC immediately in speed and quality. I was looking for something under $100 for my kids but didn't want something I would hear them complaining about either that things werent loading. I've also been testing the 8" Coby that HHGregg has for $99 and it is great as well. I also has the 1gb of memory...

first time tablet user here and i have netflix and the google play market installed. so far im loving it. at least for the purpose of what i need it for.

now my question is, is their an option to adjust the gyroscope inside? i notice with some games they run smooth but in the form of needing to tilt the unit in directions for games it comes up laggy and slow...

Take these back. The Nook Color is much nicer and higher quality.

mrstangblb 11-21-2012 07:16 PM

Screen response is the worst

I have had a bunch of tablets - Nook Colors, an Acer Iconia Tab, Toshiba Thrives, Transformer TF101, a cheapo MOMO8 straight from China, and a couple of the Polaroid tablets from Big Lots - and this one is the sorriest. I was hoping this one would work for my niece and nephews, so I bought 3 at lunch today. I was looking forward to loading lots of apps on these tonight.

I took one out of the box and it was almost completely charged out of the box. The build quality didn't look bad. It is actually a nice looking unit. I plugged it in and went straight to log into my wifi - and found an entire row of letters was unresponsive.

That's inexcusable. I have never seen anything with such a poorly executing screen.

I hate it - I thought I had my kids' shopping finished. Now back to the drawing board.

Not so sure the NC is as snappy as this one, plus this is loaded with ICS. The nook needs to be rooted, and it still won't have a camera. The Uniden IMO is probably easier for people who want a good tablet right out of the box. No risk in trying out the Uniden, with a solid local return policy.

pcngo 11-22-2012 01:31 AM

I apologize for this rookie question. I have several mobi files on my sd card that the various ebook readers I've tried cannot detect unless I drop the files into the internal memory. Can anyone give me advice on how to fix this?

I agree the feature set is nicer on the Uniden, but I'm not willing to take the chance of opening the other 2 that I have given how unresponsive the screen is on the 1 I did open.

ebay has this Nook Color for $59 [ebay.com] - refurbed, yes, and no camera - but when I rooted some of these before they were GREAT. The screen is so much better - resolution is very nice on the Nook Color, and rooting them with a microSD card is pretty easy. You can dual boot into the normal software when removing the card, and you can boot into Gingerbread at least. If I can find Jelly Bean will boot off of it, too, I'll do that.

I'm disappointed in the Uniden, bottom line. I hope everybody else's works fine, but I'm not taking the chance.

ebay has this Nook Color for $59 [ebay.com] - refurbed, yes, and no camera - but when I rooted some of these before they were GREAT.

I'm in the same boat as you with the nook this morning. I sold one of our two, and brought the other rooted one to the inlaws for the kids to play. It took 10 minutes to boot up, and now is taking forever to get into Amazon App Store. Reminds me of the days of AOL dial up. It could be the internet connection, but I'm on my laptop and there's no issue. They want me to find an ereader/tablet for my neice, and I was very close to pulling the trigger on the NC again. No itchy trigger finger right now. How's reading on this Uniden? Clear enough?

mlpalmer78 11-22-2012 10:40 AM

bought one last night....

pretty decent for $60...Netflix works...browsing is fine...many complain but damn..I used to be giddy about getting on the internet back when it was dial up at 28kbps...then oh my good..we got a us robotics modem and were at 56 kpbs......sweet!

first world problems are hilarious...

Screen is not the greatest but I had an NEC mini laptop that I used for many years and that was crap screen and it never bothered me...again..."oh my..not super retina blaster HD for $60...what a piece of crap"...lol

it's fine...Watched Biutiful with horse face Javier Bardem on it last night...no complaints..

head phone jack is sucky...needed to play with it to get some buzz out..but figured it out..

micro sd slot sucks as well...a pain to get the card to stay in place...pop it in all the way and slide up....that will keep it in place...

no problems so far....if it lasts a year...it will have done its job for me...I bought this one so my daughter can go to town on it and then I don't have to worry about her breaking my HTC Evo View...

screen does require more pressure...will probably be good for her since she smacks at the screen...does not have a light touch at all....lol

but again...it's the cost of a tank of gas...anything else that is SIGNIFICANTLY better is probably $160-$180

and honestly...I myself only use the HTC for Netflix...checking sports scores real quick.....just some quick browsing...I am not a power user at all...and if this were around when I bought the HTC...this would have suited me just fine...and I would have saved a couple hundred bucks....oh well..

repped for the heads up on something quite serviceable for not much moolah...

maposo 11-22-2012 10:45 AM

I got the nook color on eBay instead for the same $59... it doesn't have HDMI or camera, but for my purposes it's ok. And it has an awesome IPS 1024x600 screen which should be leagues ahead of what's in this one... It can also be flashed to run android ICS easily. If you don't want the camera/hdmi it's a superior devide IMO...

LEMON LIME 11-22-2012 01:16 PM

So, anyone found a perfect el cheapo micro SD card for these yet?

I need 2 of them! My kids 11 & 7, will be thrilled with these. Heck, I am thrilled with them.

HKC is really good..

anyone know if the San Disk ULTRA microSD cards work on these? I bought a class 4 microSD yesterday for this, but saw the ULTRA Class 10 microSD cards on sale tomorrow and want to get those if they work. Transfer rate will be better on the class 10 than the class 4 I have.

ShaynaK 11-23-2012 12:32 AM

hello everybody, i was wondering i just bought 2 of these one for my boyfriend and one for my brother. they are computer junkies, neither has a tablet. i am no expert, but for the price i thought i would pick them up. all they will most likely use them for is browsing the internet on the couch as they have gaming computers and laptops. i was wondering if the screen is 'plasticy'. i told my boyfriend there were cheap tablets for black friday and he said they will probably be shitty and have a plastic screen. do these look and feel cheap? email me shaynakader@hotmail.com please im really nervous i just spent 200 bucks to be embaressed on xmas day. (i bought cases and screen protectors which is why it came out to be so much)

Is this good enough for Skype video calls? I am thinking of getting this for my parents just for video calls with their grandchild, that would be the only use for them!

Anyway to check the inventory online?

Thanks.

Don't know about Skype (not a techy person), but I could not find an inventory checker before picking up the store's last 2 for Christmas presents. Either calling or taking a chance like I did and drive to the store are your only 2 options AFAIK.

Good luck!

easy to get the market on it if you follow the instructions... it actually shows up as google market not google play in the app tray...

as for movies are you taking about having ripped movies on the mSD card? or are you talking about streaming... if ripped you should download BSPlayer or DicePlayer (VPlayer might be another option thats free? but I use the other 2... awesome players).. the default player on the tablet is hit or miss... I tested it with all kinds of video files and some it played and some it didnt... it also would play some mp4s I downloaded from youtube...other mp4s I also downloaded from youtube it wouldnt play... but thats why I use BSPlayer...plays everything and has awesome gesture controls

----

also a good PDF reader for free that renders files faster than most ive tried is Radaee PDF Reader... for the lower specs on this tablet it needs all the help it can get... so give this one a try...

I don't have one of these units, but I have come up on this problem before. Tablet mounts internal memory as "sdcard."

NOTE: Please back up, and be prepared to factory reset. Might want to just start over clean anyway because I don't know what will happen to the exisitng data in either "card."

You might need to back up and edit:

/etc/vold.fstab

lines that may look something like:

dev_mount sdcard /mnt/sdcard
dev_mount extsd /mnt/extsd

switch to

dev_mount extsd /mnt/sdcard
dev_mount sdcard /mnt/extsd

Reboot. REMEMBER that if you have the option in system settings to wipe your internal memory -- this is now your physical sdcard!

If you are wanting to move apps to your external sdcard, this doesn't work. All it does is rename your internal storage to extsd, and your external sd to sdcard. Everything is still put on the internal storage. This is a problem with Android 4. The only thing I know of that can help is found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/s...?t=1410262

>>> where did you read that return policy... receipt says 30 days... did you see this in the advertisement or something???? <<<

During the holidays, most Big Lots stores will extend the return period until after Christmas. To allow for ease of returning gifts that don't work/aren't wanted/etc.

As long as you have your original receipt and all of the materials that came with it - box, instructions, cords - it doesn't matter why you're returning something, they'll take it back.

FB app is something you need to install from Google Play.. Normally Android doesn't come with the FB app installed.. However, your daughter can install the FB app for free any time...

not sure what formats google reader uses, since ive never used it... but I suggest using cool reader for the most part

I find it better than aldiko, moon reader etc... and its supports most ebook formats, it also has a night reading function, it will read the books to you through speaker or headset, you can adjust font, page colors and all kinds of other things through the settings... all for free

https://play.google.com/store/app...ader&hl=en

you can also install amazons kindle reader app and for pdfs
radee free
https://play.google.com/store/app...rch_result

I also use and older paid version (I like it better than the newer versions bc it doesnt keep the zoom resize of the page when you go to the next page, it renders back to full page view)
repligo pdf reader
https://play.google.com/store/app...rch_result

Instructions to add Google Android Market ----> http://www.the-digital-reader.com...LSS0YZas2z

simple and easy to do... and you can always search for the apk (app file name) file of the app you want and side load it... youll have to allow it to install apps from other sources (it will ask you when you try to install an app)

Look for "Voice Search" in Google Play. You might need to redownload it

Quigs10 11-28-2012 07:15 PM

I bought 2 back when it was on Sale before TGiving. 1 each for my two daughters and have been getting it all ready to go for xmas with all the games they like and setting up the wallpaper, testing it out etc.

Thoughts so far:

PROS: Overall pretty good. It's $59 so gotta keep that in mind. It plays the games they love on my phone fine. Once in awhile it will "glitch" and I have to close the game, but not anything diffrent than my phone.

The browser is OK, definitely not as fast as my phone, but fine for them.

I've installed App Market (Google Play) and it works fine most of the time. It does occasinally crash and say "The App Market has stopped working". I have not installed Amazon App Market yet, but will soon in order to be able to dload movies and books in the future.

CONS: I don't like that when you try to move apps to the microSD card like a phone, it actually DOESN'T get moved to the microSD card. I bought 2 16gb cards on sale on BF for $10 and am annoyed that the tablet doesn't port the app over to it as it should. I see the insternal memory filling up fast. I do put videos and photos from my computer on the SD card and they play fine.

I know there is a way to transfer the apps to the sd card but u have to tweak the directories and don't want to hassle with that. It should not say "Move to SD card" in the App Manager if it really does NOT do that.

Another thing I noticed is that if playing with it for 20-30 minutes it will start to get a little choppy. probably just running on empty in terms of the puny 1ghz processor.

Anyone else having better luck or find an easy way to transfer the apps from the internal "sd card" to that REAL micro SD card that's mounted?

Quigs10 11-28-2012 07:17 PM

oh, I too found a couple of $5 tablet jackets that fit these at Big Lots.

I was able to take all that off including the browser for my 7 and 3 year old. The tablet is already rooted. If you do not know how to deal with rooting and Titanium Backup, simply disable them under the Settings and Applications.

Otherwise, you can delete them from the tablet (making your tablet faster) by using TB.

How do I make the icons bigger?

I'll admit I'm an adroid noob. I have a blackberry that work provides and don't have a personal phone so I'm new to all this. I got one for my kids and was able to get google play/android market installed and several games and apps installed just fine (for those wondering about ebooks Aldiko seems to do the job for what I wanted). However all the icons are about the size of my pinky fingernail. I've tried a few different launchers, check a few boxes for big icons, adjusted the number of columns and rows but I can't seem to get big icons.

Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks

cyclops13 11-29-2012 07:22 PM

Finally got around to making sure everything worked ok on this device. All is well except the camera is messed up. It sees the image but the colors are green and yellowish and its all messed up. Tried to refresh system to factory defaults, but that didnt help either.

Oh well, kids probably wont be using camera for much.

Do people ever make custom roms for these types of 1-off tablets, or are you pretty much stuck with the OS that comes with it? This is my first Android based tablet, but I have a few friends with Touchpads running Jelly bean.

So is this deal still alive? Or the prices have changed now?

Also people who have been playing around with this tablet for some time, can you confirm how skype video calling performs on this?

I have the same questions as I am interested in getting something for an older person to use with Skype. Any feedback out there on using Skype on this device?

USB port on mine just crapped out for no good reason. Can't find my receipt, so I guess I'm going to see if I can exchange it for another one or get store credit.

Started playing with mine over the weekend. I was able to get the Play Store installed. I can DL apps, but anytime I try to DL a book the market crashes.

I installed Chrome but like everyone else says, Chrome does not work on this tab.

I did install LauncherPro, that I used on my phone, and it works fine. I still need to tweak the settings. I'm not sure if I'll keep it or not. Probably play with it a couple more weeks and then decide.

sometimes, on some of the more obscure forums. however alot of times (like the touchpad case) the interest and effort by the rom modding community for a particular device comes down to how popular the device is.

yes but if you have market or play install they can always re-install it.... yes they will figure it out. hehe

No Google play after all apps are installed here. Since it is rooted you can always install whatever application with the SD card using a backup program like Titanium Backup . At least for those with little kids like me.

Also there are apps that will password protect Google Play and any other application you don't want opened without permission.

Thanks

I had the same problem, and just got mine all set up with much bigger icons, text, etc. Steps:

1. I installed superuser and busybox to ensure I was completely rooted (may not be necessary)
2. Install Button Savior, which enables soft buttons for home, back, search, volume, etc.
3. Configure Button Savior to your liking
4. Install ROM ToolBox
5. In ROM Toolbox, go to Performance and then "build.prop Editor"
6. Scroll down to ro.sf.lcd_density, near the bottom. This number is set to 120 by default. Increase it to get bigger UI elements. I've landed at 200, which is likely too big for some people. Try 140 or 160 first.
7. You'll be prompted to reboot -- do it

Result: After the tablet reboots, you will see bigger UI elements, starting with the lock screen. You'll also see the System UI process stop. On my tablet it does this twice after every reboot, and then everything is normal after that. Finally, you'll notice that you've lost the home, back, menu buttons at the bottom of the screen. This is because your tablet is now in "phone mode" instead of "tablet mode". You can still use the hardware home and reboot buttons, and Button Savior (installed in step 2) gives you all the other buttons that you had and more.

I'm really happy with this configuration. Icons and text were way too small before, and they're great now. And I really like Button Savior buttons -- I find it really convenient to be able to bring out the buttons when I need them and hide them away when I don't.

Good luck!

Hi.

I bought this and it worked great the first day. I went to plug it in to charge that night and it went to a "A World Without Wires: Uniden" screen with a moving circling icon on it. It has stayed that way for a week. I have tried to push the reset button. Nothing seems to work.

Someone please help me.

Thank you!
