good price for the drive, but ouch @ shipping

ahmadka 11-20-2012 04:16 AM

looking for a similar deal without the AR clause ... anyone knows then let me know :)

mnagesw 11-20-2012 04:44 AM

Is this OEM or Retail version?

ewilson248 11-20-2012 05:10 AM

Software Contents
Cyberlink Power2Go
E-Hammer
E-Green

the feedback seems to indicate no codecs / burning software included, add the shipping to that, and I say we can do better in the next 7 days... pass

brownnote 11-20-2012 05:30 AM

no playback software, just burning.... the lg one for 70 minus 15% is supposed to have it, but is hit and miss if you get it... according to the lg website it should come with it.

satanslover 11-20-2012 05:58 AM

I have this drive and it has trouble reading quite a few bluray disks

You beat me to it! Just saw MicroCenter's BF add in my email and saw that too. The one from MicroCenter is a Bare Drive though so no software of any kind for sure.

billcsho 11-20-2012 06:21 AM

I can get $4.5 cash back on this to offset some shipping cost.

retail

billcsho 11-20-2012 07:10 AM

It was $49.99AR last year. I hope it will go lower this year.

SumDuud 11-20-2012 07:16 AM

Didn't really think about a blu-ray burner having issues reading discs... seems like that should be a no brainer. Might have to pass on this. Putting together a HTPC and wouldn't mind having a blu-ray burner/player for it.

FYI about the shipping. I did a 1 month trial of shoprunner and when I went online to cancel it, I was offered an additional 90 days for free with the caveat that if I used the service 3 times in that 90 day period the free extension would go for a year. I order now and then from GNC, ProFlowers and Newegg so I hit the 3 uses and got the free year. It may be a YMMV thing, but I've read about many others getting similar offers on cancelation. If you haven't tried the service, give it a shot and canceling is easy online so just set a reminder to do so and you may get a year for free as well.

usually, but in this case it does come w/ powerdvd10. Now, some reviews on NE said they didn't ship it, so I went with a different source:

to clarify, this asus bd writer can in fact burn bd's, but it cannot be used to watch movies with the included software, that is extra. power2go is included, but is a burning program.

o0adam0o 11-20-2012 07:33 AM

Ugh I can't wait till these deals don't have rebate. This BF, newegg and Frys are my only hope for a bluray durner for $50 no rebate.

And most of the programs are $50 and I've even heard that some like PowerDVD will only update for 2 years after meaning any new Blu Rays after that won't be playable as they won't send the code out till you spend more money for a new edition and get 2 more years, rinse, repeat.

It's ridiculous, I'd love to play Blu-Rays on my computer and I'd likely buy more with the ability to but Sony has made it so damn hard to just play movies. You figure that Sony would want players in just about every laptop now, especially since there is a movement to ditch the optical drives.

True, and I have had a hard time finding the perfect program for $20. They are all 40-50, unless there is a shellshocker or something, but even then, not so sure. Anyone had any experience with slysoft's anydvdhd? If anyone can recommend a program that works GREAT and will update for years, for $40 or less let me know.

The lg drive I linked also is what I choose despite the older powerdvd10 software due to having the 3d capability, whereas this asus does not. Not a deal breaker for some, but I am selling an htpc, and want that as part of the package.

billcsho 11-20-2012 09:30 AM

Just wait. I got PowerDVD and WinDVD FAR last year. I think it will come up again this year.

spicytofu 11-20-2012 09:35 AM

waiting for these to hit $20. But the discs still still be expensive.

With all these home media servers and smart TVs, i dont think i will ever need a bluray player, or any player, again.
