Was hoping this would be a touchscreen, but I guess not.

creamyhorror 11-22-2012 01:56 AM

Great deal, considering it includes a 3rd-gen low-voltage i5 processor and sufficient memory. Along with the $370 i5 2nd-gen laptop on eBay, all the good stuff seems to be coming out now.

Sorry to be out of topic but it sounds like you know your hardware stuff. Thoughts on this BB laptop as a gaming PC for my brother who wants to play D3? http://www.bestbuy.com/site/HP+-+...Id=6835328

Damn, that's the one I was hoping to get yesterday. Forgot that it was going on sale today, haha.

It's an excellent deal. i7 quadcore, 14", fairly light / ultrabook...the only issue is that I don't know how well the HD4000 graphics chip works for D3. I also think a laptop mostly for gaming should be larger, like 15.6". Someone else will have to comment on these points.

(Sigh...should I try to cancel that Thinkpad I just got?)

On another thread somebody said Portal 2 and similar powered games should run on high settings. For Battlefield 3 like games, they said at least medium should be fine...

theOneUpper 11-22-2012 02:13 AM

quick answer: not really.

The i7-3630QM is more than sufficient to handle the processing but the description of ENVY lacks a dedicated graphics card. I'm not sure about graphics processing of hte Ivy integrated graphics. You are better off looking for a notebook with a dedicated graphics card.

nextbond 11-22-2012 02:22 AM

Better than the dell Vostro on ms store posted, a few days ago with i5(sandy bridge), 500gb hdd, 4gb ram - rest of specs identical.

Thanks OP - keep them coming if you see better than this SD.

rzawrekta 11-22-2012 02:27 AM

Don't forget 5% cashback from BoA!

kharvel 11-22-2012 02:32 AM

Got in on this deal. This seems to be the best Core i5 deal of the Black Friday week.

Buckeyefan 1 11-22-2012 02:41 AM

This is a beautiful laptop that hinges on ultrabook territory with it's sub 1" thick design. It has a specific designed dvd-rw drive to help keep the laptop thin. Most ultrabooks don't have optical drives. The killer here for me, which many other ultrabooks suffer from, is the 4 cell battery - which is a crying shame, because it has everything else I am looking for. The i5 dual core is a lower GHz design, so the benchmark suffers a bit at under 2900 (still quick). But that's in keeping with the specs on a sub 1" frame.

rzawrekta 11-22-2012 02:43 AM

I don't understand the appeal of the Best Buy laptops.. The cheaper ones seem to be at least 1 generation old, if not more.. I was about to bite the bullet on some Samsung atrocity when I remembered that Microsoft usually has decent deals (got at least 1 thing last couple of BF).. So glad I didn't get the Best Buy deals.. Sheesh.

Been there, done that. Touchscreen on a laptop like this is nothing more than a gimmick.
The big issue is the low screen resolution.

thatdude888 11-22-2012 03:16 AM

Total: $426.93 after tax, still worth it ?

thatdude888 11-22-2012 03:27 AM

or better question is this the best 400ish is going to get?

mroldboy 11-22-2012 03:27 AM

Oh man, the pressurrrrreeeeeee.

I would have to return my order from Lenovo outlet if I go for this. Their policy says free returns no questions asked for the holidays so I assume it would be easy.

desimillionaire 11-22-2012 03:40 AM

I purchased both the Acer and the HP from Best Buy [bestbuy.com] ... Now to test them out and decide which i want to keep when they arrive next week or so.

mroldboy 11-22-2012 03:53 AM

Ah crap. I forgot to use urlhasbeenblocked for 3.5% CB. On the phone right now to try and cancel then reorder. On hold, but it says their hours of operation aren't for another hour or so. Only $15 or so, but I still want it.

hunter44102 11-22-2012 04:18 AM

768 vertical lines of resolution is horrible. its almost 2013. My first laptop in 1999 had 1024x768. I guess most of the population doesn't care, so we're stuck with it on 90% of laptops these days

mroldboy 11-22-2012 04:34 AM

But in the budget range $300-500 for these deals your not going to get any better unless you go up to 17" 1600x900. I haven't seen any deals so far in this price range that have higher resolutions on a 15" or smaller screen. If there has been, I missed out. Just part of life now.

For what its worth my old macbook is 800 vertical (16:10) so similar ppi if it was 16:9. I think it looks damn good still. Looking at some in store I could not tell you if one was 768 or 900 or 1080 without looking at the desktop icon sizes as a reference. I think its fine to the human eye and only noticeable if you're looking at the screen, analyzing it and thinking about the low resolution.

jkwok44 11-22-2012 04:44 AM

got it, thanks

pchongdo 11-22-2012 04:50 AM

If I can save anyone any money please avoid Acer products until they focus on producing quality products. My $500 laptop crapped out a few months after the year warranty was up. Dont be swayed by the specs, what good are these specs when they are held together by poor wiring or low quality parts? Pay for reliability in Asus or Lenovo. Do yourself a favor and google acer reviews. Just my 2 cents.

junkityjunk 11-22-2012 04:54 AM

Thanks!
After comparing all the under $500 deals I chose this one and went through chase ultimate rewards for an extra 4pts/$1 (that will help offset the tax).

I also checked out the reviews for a similar acer before buying.

Thanks, pulled the trigger. This will be replacing my macbook. 10% cashback with Discover makes this deal even slicker! (5% through shopdiscover + 5% bonus for online shopping)

raven70 11-22-2012 05:41 AM

Surprised this is not a front page yet, as it seems a much better deal than the Asus that is on the front page.

viraj071 11-22-2012 05:52 AM

Can anyone confirm if this one has backlit keyboard ? Thanks

iJesu 11-22-2012 05:55 AM

Why this isnt on the front page?? there is a problem about this laptop¡?¡

rp001 11-22-2012 06:05 AM

Pulled the trigger!! came to 429 with tax. Not sure now if this would be beat by any of the BF deals,
Will keep an eye out on Fri.
Anybody know returns on MS Store are free?

I was able to cancel/reorder though no problem.

If anyone's wants to know, you can go to the contact us page and wait a bit and a chat option will pop up. Not sure if any other way to get to it, but went way faster than being on hold for 10 min calling.

Ducman69 11-22-2012 06:47 AM

For those that have not used Windows 8, it is VERY touchscreen oriented.

In fact, trying to sell non-touchscreen laptops now is proving to be very challenging because of it.

That said, this is $400, and for that little mula I can understand making some sacrifices.

z(+)diac 11-22-2012 06:51 AM

Not a bad deal by any means, but I'm still scratching my head as to why they didn't include a 6 cell, given the decent rest of the specs.

Sreez 11-22-2012 06:52 AM

So far the best 3rd gen i5 8GB RAM 1TB HDD deal..this year!

Between the Miscrosoft Acer laptop and Samsung i3 laptop from BB (with backpack, security software and a mouse) which is a better deal?
Confused which one to pull the trigger...

luxmn 11-22-2012 07:04 AM

i have got to already looked at about 200 laptops in the past few days and i pulled the trigger on this even though i have to pay tax on it (i know shame on me). at the same price with this amazon has the dell for the same price but worse specs, newegg has the asus same price relatively same specs but refurb (no tax though), lenovo outlet has the p580 but old chipset.

all and all this is a budget laptop that will be future proof for about 2~3 years. good enough for my mom. i'm in.

bob77 11-22-2012 07:10 AM

Got one of these.
Now im glad my CC didnt go through for the bestbuy one, as ill be happier with this one.

I am going to enjoy smashing the hell out of my 8 year old toshiba laptop that always overheated and froze. I may even take it to the range and see what fun I can have. I really hate my laptop.

BinkyBill 11-22-2012 07:10 AM

Confused which one to pull the trigger...

I pulled the trigger on the Sammy. The laptop is primarily for my mother, who will only check email, browse, and possibly watch the occasional video. Also BB's return policy has definitely progressed, allowing you 30 days for returns, WITHOUT restocking fees/questions. Throw in another 4gb stick of ram (can be purchased for $15-20) and you have a formidable computer.

I've also found Samsung laptop builds far better than a majority of its competitors.

Touch Screen or Not
Windows 8 is a "touch first" operating system. It can be operated with a mouse or touch pad, but its newest, coolest component, the Start Screen, and the tablet-like apps sold for that environment via Microsoft's online store, are best used with touch. And there are some traditional laptops, like Acer's slender Aspire S7, with touch screens to complement their touch pads and keyboards.

Because I believe Windows 8's tablet-style mode works best with a touch screen, I don't advise buying a Windows 8 laptop without one.
Quote:

Storage
Windows 8 and other system files appear to take up a lot more of your storage space than Windows 7. On the Lenovo Yoga laptop I reviewed last week, only 70 gigabytes of the 128 gigabytes of storage are available to the user. Get at least a 500 gigabyte hard disk or a 256 gigabyte solid-state drive.

Definitely 64bit

Two issues, this is a fairly slow i5
More important for the people who do not like 8, there are major issues and questions of installing 7 on a windows 8 machine with the uefi secure bios, since the os must have a correct signature.

Only major if you tend to stray far from a power source for a long period of time, particularly if you use the device to stream/playback video, game, or multi-task.

As for upgrading to a 6-cell battery, it should run you anywhere from $100-150.

Yours has the much better 6 cell battery, but only a 0.3mp webcam. Trade off. If you don't Skype, you got the better machine. What did you pay for it? That extra 2 cell battery will add 30% or more battery life.

It might be initially difficult but I assure you it's not impossible. Besides, for those who have trouble getting over the learning curve for Windows 8, simply just have to install Classic Shell - http://classicshell.sourceforge.net/ (first thing I did when upgrading).

Probably got it during the week's lightning deal ($369 or something?). I will say I've found Asus builds to be generally fantastic. I wanted to pull the trigger on this same model, but the majority of the reviews claimed issues with the spacebar being difficult to push, which I suspect is a minor issue for some.

Also note that the Asus does not ship with Windows 8 (which I wouldn't consider a downgrade seeing as it isn't even a touchscreen).

The i5-3317U boosts up to 2.6 Ghz. The i5-3317U is a 17w CPU while the Intel Core i5-3210M is a 35w processor. So you will generally get a little better performance from the Intel Core i5-3210M but shorter battery life.

More i5s (though most are for desktops)

I went with the Acer b/c I preferred the look over the Dell. Well, to each his own. Don't get me wrong but I have a Dell XPS 15 with a HD screen and I love that thing. This Acer is going to be for a friend bday where he's more into aesthetic than specs.

bob77 11-22-2012 08:34 PM

ordered one last night or this morning kind of a blur.

But was trying to see specs on the ram, as in max it allows/ number of slots but cant find that info.

Anybody find the specs anywhere? googles not getting me anywhere. Acer links seem to be broken that I find

spendandsave 11-23-2012 03:49 AM

Bought one from Microsoft store (B&M) at midnight.

nutsaboutgolf 11-23-2012 04:50 AM

According to Crucial in regards to RAM:

Memory Type: DDR3 PC3-10600, DDR3 PC3-12800, DDR3 (non-ECC)
Maximum Memory: 8GB
Slots: 2
Each memory slot can hold DDR3 PC3-10600, DDR3 PC3-12800 with a maximum of 4GB per slot.

bob77 11-23-2012 09:30 PM

Look on crucial, closest model is 6807 but that has an i3 processor this one has i5 so not sure if I can go by that.

Will have to just wait til it gets here to order ram

mroldboy 11-29-2012 02:08 AM

I got mine a few days ago.

Has anyone notice the trackpad being lower on the left side? I was at Costco and they also sell the 571 model and it also felt a bit weird with the right-front corner being higher than the left-front corner of the track pad. Is this normal?

Also on the top panel, the edge (side where the webcam is). Mine is kind of messed up. The way I'd describe is that someone took a razor blade and ran in down the top channel (where the front and back parts of the top screen panel meets) and scrapped the sides a bit.

Wow, that doesnt sound good.
I have mine coming in today, wondering if i should open it at all, not sure what MS store return policy is but i think i read if you open it, they wont take it as a return.
Anybody else has any feedback on this laptop?

All in all the issues seem fine really.

I ordered two of these. one was supposed to be cancelled, but they shipped it anyways. they already gave me a return shipping label.

They are already open. They cut the Acer security seal and put their own Microsoft Store seal on it. I wanted to see if the issue was on the other one so I peeled the Microsoft one off carefully and it indeed has similar issues. It peels off pretty easily and doesn't tear the box.

I wonder if that is just how the trackpad is on these. To be honest after using it for a few days now I've forgotten about it until I got a notification someone quoted me in this thread.

I was also having some issues with the trackpad, it would stop every so often.

I installed the updated drivers and turned off TP Rejection, two finger zooming and tap to click. Its working much better.

Another tip with the trackpad software. Make both the bottom right and bottom left corners act as left click and change the two finger click to right click. Makes it much easier to use. Maybe its just me since I'm used to a macbok trackpad.

The screen is very nice, at least for a $400 laptop and this thing is indeed very thin. If you want to see it before you open the package I think Costco has a similar model with a touchscreen in stores. At least mine did. It as an Aspire 571 and looked the same as my model.

The only upsides to the dell is a minor savings, a slightly faster processor and possibly slightly longer battery life...

The upsides to the Acer, fast startup technology, more RAM more HDD, near ultrabook specs in size/weight but with an optical drive, one 3.0 USB slot, (Dell has zero), 1.3MP camera (Dell is only .3MP, sucks on skype), if you're going to have a large 15.6" laptop, it better have a numeric keypad IMO, Acer does, Dell doesn't...Lastly the microsoft store puts their signature service on it which removes most of the "bloatware" or unwanted crap...

nutsaboutgolf 12-01-2012 04:26 AM

I got the specs on the RAM, came with a 4GB NANYA & a 2GB Kingston (1333 - 10600)...Downloaded the Crucial software which states max ram is 8GB or 4GB per side...

I unloaded my 400GB external drive on the thing and it still starts up in less than a minute...Maybe I'll forgo the SSD...

Thanks a lot for the detailed comparison, helps a lot.
One more thing I noticed is the Acer only has 4 cell battery, how difficult (or expensive) is it to change it to a 6 cell?
I think I will keep the Acer after all.
just got delivered yesterday. Will open it and play with it over the weekend.

You should reread this entire thread for additional info; you'd see that the Acer claims to be able to last up to 5 hours...No one could find info on dell however assume 4-6 hours...Both are not real world and often turn down screen brightness and performance...Just because it has more cells doesn't mean it'll last long...Also out of the box, there are all sorts of "optimization" settings that turn off unused processes so there could be a big difference between models if you're just surfing the net vs editing a video...The battery on the Acer is very easy to replace...Cost of a new battery all comes down to risk, buy from Acer, get the real thing and pay the most...Buy off ebay, pay the least and possibly get a knockoff...

According to the return policy, you cannot return the Acer after you open the box...If there exceptions, I don't know...If you want, go to Costco to check out the Acer Asprire V5 to see if you like it before opening...I personally believe if you keep the Acer you won't regret returning the Dell and if you return the Acer you'd regret it... :)

Gabik123 12-02-2012 11:05 AM

Guys I picked one up and I'm going to be returning it to the MS store tomorrow (got the vizio 14" instead since it already came with an SSD). Anyone interested in taking mine off my hands? I'll sell it for the purchase price, not a penny more or less.

I'm located in the socal area, near long beach, just reply to this and I'll see it and we can arrange some kind of meetup if you like.

Got the laptop on Friday, opened it yesterday.
Havent played with it a lot but i like it. The look of it is really good (compared to the Dell) and its sleek as well. the keyboard is well layed out also.
So far, I am happy with the purchase.
I guess the Dell I had ordered is going back to Bestbuy. :-)

2 year warranty

BTW, I just confirmed on the Acer website that this model has a 2 YEAR WARRANTY. (See this link [acer.com]).
For a while there was a conflict between the Acer datasheet and the warranty document, but that has been corrected now. IMO, it adds $50-$75 to the value of this model.

Anyone tried going to store and return it?

I hate the trackpad too, but after a few weeks of use I'm pretty adjusted to it. If you turn the sensitivity up and turn off TP rejection it feels a lot smoother. I dont have the weird stops when moving the cursor now. I still hate the buttons being part of the trackpad however, but this seems to be the industry standard now so I should get used to it. I'm just so used to my old white macbook with its huge one button under the trackpad.

I made a post about making the trackpad a bit better a page back or so. It helps.

I also realized a major issue with this laptop. Where the hell is the indicator that the caps or num lock is on? Am I missing something? Or is a light on mine broken or something?

Other than that issue, and the blah trackpad I'm loving it. For $400 it was a great deal.

Although the hardware feels a bit crappy (the casing to a point, the trackpad, etc) the hardware inside is very capable and has done exactly what I've wanted so far.

I wish the speakers were not on the bottom since I often use it on my bed or somewhere else where the speakers can get covered. The speakers can get a bit too loud easily, but the built in volume keys do a good job of making sure you ramp them up gradually.

The battery has been fine as well, I get about 4 hours if I have the screen brightness down to about 70% and have some settings turned down from max performance to a middle ground. The battery is small, but that can be a plus too, it makes the laptop easier to carry around. To be honest I've barely used the battery as I always just have it plugged in at home or at school and I just leave the battery at home since I am always near an outlet.

I dont know. I'm comparing my screen to my older macbook which was 1366x800 I think. This is very similar but with a slightly larger display. I cannot tell the difference and the Acer is definitely brighter as I had an easier time with it outdoors than my macbook.

I'm unsure of what your issue might be, but I'm perfectly happy with the screen. I just can't see a difference.
