Best budget tablet?

I personally have no need for a tablet, but I might decide to get one for my mom. She would use it for the bare necessities only (light web browsing, MAYBE emails, and i guess youtube / music). Not looking for anything super expensive or powerful. I see a ton of tablets in the $80- $140 range for black friday, but I don't know anything about any of the brands, save for the Coby 8" one (a relative picked up a Coby a few months ago and liked it I think).

Do any of the tablets in this price range stand out to anyone? not looking for a refurb, or to spend much more than $140ish. Thanks.

Happy Thanksgiving to you too!

It depends if you want the tablet to have the google play store preinstalled. Also, what type of specs do you want for the tablet? There are a plethora of options for budget tablets with decent specs and front facing camera if you want it to have one. There was a tablet at Big lots for 79.99 with 1Ghz processor, 1 gb of ram and pre-rooted, which is quite a steal considering. If you are willing to install adb and run a few files on it so it can install and run the play store, it's well worth it.

The tablet is called the D2 Pad Internet Tablet. They may have a few left at your local store.

Also give this link a look:

I hope this helps.

I came across this one today, good specs, it's on eBay but the guy is selling close to 2k units now. I looked at the seller's 7 inch tablet has a dual core for $99. Not related to him btw as always caveat emptor.

I've played around with a few of those "budgets" tablets, but was ultimately always disappointed by sluggish performance and other dealbreaking compromises. It's a the upper end of your price range, but you might consider the Kindle Fire ($160 from Amazon) of, even better, the clearanced Nexus 7 with 8 GB at Staples (also $160).

I would definitely get the Samsung Galaxy 2 from Kmart for i think $180, pay the little bit more for a much better tablet. By the way it is a 7"

Jeez! That even has an ethernet port on it.

Anyway... What comes to OP's question, the cheapo tablets are a bit hit and miss. Processors on them seem to vary between 1 and 1.2GHz and memory is usually 512MB, so none of them are what one would consider lightning fast.

Google Play seems to be missing from pretty much all of them. Except on the $69 Azpen at OfficeMax. Or at least it shows the icon on the picture. I ordered one of them, so seeing is believing. I might actually even stop by OM B&M tomorrow morning to check and see if I could get one from there.

Amazon has a lot of apps, too, so missing Google Play might not be a big deal for your mother, though.

I had the galaxy 10.1 and loved it. The 7" should be great as well. I would spend a little extra for the better tablet.

when looking for budget tablets, make sure they have access to the google play store. some don't, and you'll be stuck having to download apps from 3rd party app sites

Cool. Didn't check there, but thanks for the confirmation.

thanks for the tip on google play - i don't think she'll care about it much, but ultimately i'll probably be the one who will have to download any apps for her, so it would be a big help.

not sure if she'll handle the 7" screen well or not. she's not exactly blind, but she doesn't have eagle eye vision anymore. i doubt the difference between 7 and 8" screens will be huge and worth the price difference.

will definitely look into a few of the 150-200$ tablets instead

Texfinn 11-22-2012 10:07 PM

Yup. If you want to go larger than 7", you need to raise your budget. Good luck!

I have a Nexus 7 and several iPads. The Nexus 7 I travel with and it does it's job. Not a big fan of the aspect ratio and the iPad is much more user friendly. If you can swing it, an iPad Mini or even cheaper, a refurb iPad 2 is the way to go and would likely get considerably more use for the non techie user. I bought my MIL an iPad 2 refurb last year. She uses it more than her laptop now.

Any suggestions on a budget Android tablet just to mainly run the magicJack Android app?
I had already gotten this for myself and I wanted to get another one for my mom but the 10% off promo code no longer works. She sure could use something to save on her limited 300 T-Mobile minutes a month. She doesn't have a landline.

I also had gotten the Kindle Fire HD from the AMEX Twitter promo but a few weeks later I sold it to my coworker who wanted it so badly for her child.

EDIT: Somebody mentioned Big Lots so I checked there and found this. I don't see any reviews for it.
