Not much support available for this. I bought one last month and wifi wouldn't work out of the box. I had to return to china and pay $10to ship it there and yet to receive money back. Thee are super junk and would be nice to try out only if it's easy to return as they re prone to fail.

I feel weird about seeing my Wiki cut-and-pasted into someone else's deal thread.

Odd.

Next up the food chain would be an MX2, which is tops for the moment.
Just to the side of the MK808 is the UG007.
Just below the MK808 is the MK802 II, then the MK802+, and below it is the MK802.
The UG802 falls next to or just above the MK802+.....I think.
I get confused where that one fits without looking at a spec sheet.

Good luck.

It is basically a PC on a stick.
If you plug in a printer to one of the USB slots - I'm actually not really sure what would happen.
If you have a WiFi printer, you should be able to print, no problem.

drmaxxmd 11-23-2012 05:37 AM

For a few bucs more Why not get a cheap tablet with hdmi port, does all the same stuff plus can unplug and continue doing wheat you were doing on the go.

Yes it works fine, you have to download the .apk from xda developers. The only issue I've found is that it doesn't go fullscreen when watching a video, but I haven't played with the settings to see if that's an option.

thegreatfixer 11-23-2012 05:50 AM

from what i read the 802 II is more hackable but this has a better CPU

creamyhorror 11-23-2012 06:03 AM

Apparently geekbuying.com's shipping/support is a bit suspect at the moment, there were a few comments on delays on other forums (e.g. ArmTVTech). Just a heads up.

Does 720p MKV work with XBMC? Also have you tried BSPlayer or DicePlayer in LAN mode to stream from a PC server ? That may have better full screen possibilities than XBMC.

Thanks

If you're talking about those smartsource/coupons.com/etc coupons, the answer is probably no, as those coupons require windows to print and these things don't run windows.

megamanny2000 11-23-2012 07:09 AM

You can control them with a usb mouse and keyboard, and I also believe there are apps you can put on your android phone to work with them (looks like it is noted in the wiki.) Some have bluetooth as well, for bluetooth keyboard/mouse. It doesn't look like this one does.

How's that RC11 remote btw? Really tempted to buy one of these and throw my android emulators and roms on it but I need something that would make for a good controller to play video games with.

jc122 11-23-2012 07:32 AM

Got 1 a month ago for $61, it is well worth the money, but takes some work to maintain it (some issues with wifi, display, new firmware fix most of this)

PoisonWolf 11-23-2012 07:36 AM

No one has answered me this in a previous thread so I'll ask it here. How does one go about ZOOMING in/out in terms of pinch to zoom, etc. I ask this because in terms of the browsers, games, etc.

Does anybody know the answer to this? It's the only thing holding me back from picking these things up. I understand that it is essentially a broken tablet device (it mimics a tablet without the screen).

hakhainc 11-23-2012 10:59 AM

I saw this on Geekbuying review for this product:
Quote:

Disadvantages:

The Wifi antenna are crap, or the processor jams it (runs at approx 1.2GHz, perhaps harmonics of 2.4GHZ are present...). The problem is solved by open the box (with a flat screw driver) unsolder the 2 antennas and solder 2 wires of 6.3cm (delta = 1/2) and make 2 holes in the box to let them go out of it. Since I've done it mine has gained 15dB in reception and WIFI G went from 1MB to 54MB.

What is he saying?? Delta = 1/2???

wavelength = velocity/frequency = Speed of light / 2.4 GHZ

= 3 x 10^8/2.4 x 10^9 = 0.125m OR 12.5 cm

Half of that is 6.25 (approx 6.3)

They are all shit and 90% of the people buying these will be disappointed. Tech is advancing way too quick for these ARM dongles. Wait for quadcore with full linux stack support (xbmc, ubuntu). That won't happen until 2H 2013 realistically.

goldeneye2 11-23-2012 11:32 AM

recently came across something that suggested I'd be able to connect my ps3 controller to my android phone and I could run a ps2 emulator to play GTA Vice City once it's released (plan on doing exactly that)...
so if I get something like this would I be able to play ps2 [emulator] on my big screen with my ps3 controller!?

hardrock121 11-23-2012 11:38 AM

I bought it last month and it's a pain to return. I paid 10 bucks shipping to send it back to china. The wifi wouldn't work out of box and no support at all. I would steer clear of it until someone provides proper support. I am yet to receive credit for it.

Anything with a LAN port gets bashed by people as being, "2006" - Takes up room on a device built to be, "mini" - and it absolutely does stream 1080p movies over WiFi, unless you've tested one or kept up to date on these devices - it's silly to make that claim because it's not true.

Laughing at you.....
Way to pull a nonsense number out of your backside.
Quadcore in such a tiny space would create heat that couldn't be dissipated with passive cooling solution very well.
Good luck fitting a fan inside your PC Stick.

You need to be very careful of this statement, because there were design revisions made at the end of October, directly from the factory for this model - after people were having your exact issue.

If you had the previous revision, it is irrelevant to people buying the current build.

Logitech devices seem to do well - at least their keyboards and mice, I think if you search, you should find info on people using their webcams to Skype with on the MK808.

In other words, it's similar to you trying to justify sticking a quad-core CPU into a device the size of a stick of gum, with only passive cooling - because you found links.

For anyone that didn't take the time to click the links, let me summarize:
1. Link to a guy saying a company will make a quad-core SoC
2. Link to a post about a Quad-Core SoC going into phones and tablets.
3. Link to a company called Hiapad that decided to put one into a new model of PC Stick - against anyone's better judgment.

*Sigh*

Still waiting on mine. Well within their window for delivery still, but I was hoping I would receive it to play with over this holiday weekend.

What the haters don't understand is some of us enjoy hunting for the proverbial diamond in the rough. We don't buy this expecting it to work perfectly for everything we want it to do right out of the box; It's par for the course (but if it does, that's cool, too!). Some of us have some experience "McGuyver"-ing our tech toys, and don't mind doing so to save a buck. Some of us actually look forward to the challenge. Some of us think that tinkering with something like this is pretty cool, and is actually part of the enjoyment of a product such as this.

So go find something else (appleTV, HTPC, game console, whatever) if you think you'lll be disappointed if this doesn't work perfectly out of the box. This product isn't for you. But if you're looking for a little technological adventure, grab one.

I followed ARM sticks because I love the form factor and the low price; however, I gave up the hunt for something that just honestly doesn't exist yet. Quadcores will get launched in 1Q 2013 to avoid "osborning" the current devices for the holiday season.

I'm still waiting for xorg acceleration for the raspberry pi (even binary blob). That would make the perfect ARM device.

You're trolling, because there's no way you could be that dense.

1. Go read that part where I said putting a quad-core in a PC Stick form-factor would be ignorant.
2. Now read the part where you reply about a fan being in a phone / tablet. (neither of these are PC Sticks if things are moving too fast for you to keep up with)
3. Realize you're thick as a brick.
4. Profit?

To recap, you threadcrap a dual-core arm stick thread because it isn't a quad-core...then hype a single-core RPi as the "perfect ARM device" if it had the right drivers.

Makes perfect sense.

For the record, dual-core ARM devices are more than enough to power a very capable multimedia device, and a quad-core is not the panacea you think it is. 1080P is not hard at all. The key is a GPU that can do the decoding grunt work rather than the CPU, and optimally encoded media files.

For the record, dual-core ARM devices are more than enough to power a very capable multimedia device, and a quad-core is not the panacea you think it is. 1080P is not hard at all. The key is a GPU that can do the decoding grunt work rather than the CPU, and optimally encoded media files.

:lol::lol::lol::lol: @ point #1. Agreed.

As for point #2, now would be an awesome time to point out to him that the smaller. yet more important to HD output, GPU in this device is quad-core. (Mali-400 quad)

If I leave this thing on 24/7 (connected to my TV in my bedroom all the time), is it going to die pretty fast?

I watched a video review of a mini pc and the guy had just rubber banded a cheapo heat sink to the stick. He didn't run into any problems prior, but just had the heat sink laying around and noticed the mini pc getting a little hot. You could probably get a mini usb powered heat sink fan.

ronnysrv 11-27-2012 02:18 PM

Does anyone know how this unit compares to the Mini iMito MX1?

I just found out about these mini pc's today and really want one. I feel silly for springing more for a blu-ray player with wifi and "apps".

Another question, I know on the google tv players, some streaming websites including major networks will not allow video playback because they recognize you are using a "device". Would the browser on this, or one like chrome downloaded from google play, have FULL web access?

Does anybody know the answer to this? It's the only thing holding me back from picking these things up. I understand that it is essentially a broken tablet device (it mimics a tablet without the screen).

I tried the logitech keyboard K400 with the multi-touchpad, no go. I also tried using 2 mice at once, no go. It seems that this is designed to be controlled by a single mouse pointer, it doesn't support 2. So the 2 mice were just fighting each other, and the multi-touch pad only sees 1 pointer. Maybe they would fix that in the future, but who knows. So for now, Angry Birds and Google Earth are out for me. :( But that's hardly a deal breaker. I didn't have those on my TV before this anyway, and I now have much, much more than I had. Well worth the little money I paid.

As aa side note, the logitech K400 KB with muti-touch is the best KB I've tried. It seems light and flimsy, but there are dedicated buttons for common things, like the home button, for instance. There is even a power off button that blacks your screen in a hurry. My other KBs have most of this functionality, but you have to hold down a function key or something, no dedicated key for them. With the touchpad on there, you don't have to reach for the mouse if you need to click somewhere while you're using the KB. There is even a mouse button that mimics holding down the left touchpad button, making it a little easier to scroll around.

I bought this from Geekbuying on the 24th and it finally shipped today, very much displeased though. On the checkout pages along with the site it says 6-14 and 7-15 days for shipping. I got an email and it says 30-45 days for shipping and they over charged me on my order. This site is a fraud!

PoisonWolf 11-28-2012 10:28 AM

Thank you. That was the answer I was looking for.

I'll pass on these things then until something as simple as SHIFT + Mouse Scroll results in zoom.

from a strictly hardware perspective:
* mx1 has bluetooth. mk808 does not.
* mk808 has two wifi antennas to compensate for poor wifi reception in the previous model.
mx1 has decent wifi from what i've read; so no need for dual antennas i suspect.
* otherwise they are the same from what i can tell

I wouldn't worry too much about anything that a Chinese website tells you in terms of estimated shipping dates.
That is more or less to cover their butt in my experience.
I have purchased from no less than 15 Chinese etailers and not a single one comes to mind that did not quote ridiculously long times for transit.
Also, you should keep in mind that you placed your order on a weekend so in effect, it took them 2 days to ship your item out which is not the end of the world.
As soon as you make the decision to buy from China, you should relax your expectations of what and when things will happen.
If it originally said 6-14 / 7-15 days for shipping, then I would forget about the order until that 15th day hits and then I would give them holy hell if I don't have my product.
Otherwise, you're getting all bent out of shape for nothing. Relax.

skype does not work. camera does not work. microphone (from webcam) works. i tried both HD and none HD logitech webcams.

alot of apps/games do not work. sideload will not help. video/talk add-on for yahoo does not work (after sideloaded). none of the webcam/camera apps work.

it's slow too. this is a halfbaked device. dont expect that everything will work eventhough it's running exact version of browser/flash/app like your phone.

so whatever problems that you have with those cheap chinese tablets, you will face exactly problems with this device.

Actually the logitech c260 worked for me with Skype, the issue is when I connect the wireless mouse and the Camera together, the camera will go weird after a couple of mins by displaying weird coloring. I found out that when I disconnect my wireless mouse the camera works fine without any problems. So I thought that the problem is with 2 devices sharing power on USB.

I got through the entire iMito MX2 thread only to realize it was closed and I couldn't comment.

I just wanted to say that regardless of any crap some people were giving Evo-IC, even though I didn't jump on the deal, and buy from that particular vendor, that fact that he is one of the most accommodating contributors to a topic that I have ever seen in a forum allowed me to be sold on the unit, and I ended up purchasing from Amazon (mostly 'cause I'm spoiled and must have my toys quickly:bounce: ). Even if he didn't know the answer to a question, he would reiterate the need for an answer among the community, and ask others for help. That is rare. What's not rare is people bashing each other, and that is likely why that thread was shut down. :shake:

Thanks for helping me make a choice on a product. Is there another ongoing thread on that topic? I would like to hear about more people's experiences, and would like to contribute mine when I try it out.

Question for experts.

How does HD contenst display on this android stick? the HD contents were a bit choppy on the 802 series.

People need to collectively request that the thread be re-opened.
I did this individually, because now a BUNCH of folks here at Slickdeals that purchased that Android stick do not have a place to go to share information or offer help to others and a lot of those people are first-time Android users.

Because of @sshat trolls, real people with real questions are going to be left out in the dark looking for answers to questions that otherwise might have been simple to answer by someone here.

Aside from all of that, thank you for the nice words - that's much appreciated.

I think you may mean, "output".
There is a link on ArmytechTV or whatever that site's name is (I can never remember, I'll have to look it up) that shows that the firmware has been altered to ensure / confirm a true 1080p image is output and not stretched or compromised in anyway.
There was some question previously about 720p/1080p, but this firmware ensures that it only displays 1080p at all times.
In addition to this, it is supposed to smooth out the entire process and speed things up, offering an AnTuTu benchmark score of higher than 8k, from the previous 5,000-6,000 scores that were being posted.
All the while, doing this at a lower 1.4Ghz clockspeed.
The poster's MK808 has problems running at 1.6Ghz, so he has dialed it back, which makes me believe he had one of the previous builds which cannot accommodate the heat output at the higher speed.
Mine runs 1.6Ghz without a hiccup no matter what I throw at it, so....YMMV.

All I know is that if his posts scores over 8k at 1.4Ghz, I'm going, "over 9000!" with my 1.6Ghz stick. :P

*Edit: Found the link, click HERE [armtvtech.com]

I would not recommend buying this. Bought one last month and the wifi never connects and when it does it never stays on. The PS3, Roku, Wii, and dish receiver right next to this thing work perfect but this never does.

Also the droidmote app is also not worth it. When the MK808 does connect the droidmote app rarely works.

I am not pleased with this purchase at all.

cd_vevi 12-05-2012 12:43 PM

I received mine 2 days back. It is good and we are having fun with it. Skype connects and also my Logitech Web cam works just fine.
First day WiFi was excellent and could watch HD content on Youtube without any issues. Later it isn't getting good speed..in the range of 6 to 38 mbps range!!! Not sure what is going on :(

Thanks

MKV files play fine, using the beta 3 of XBMC now. The only format I'm having issues with is MOV (720 or 1080), the sound is smooth , but the video plays in slow motion. Thanks for those player suggestions, I tried both and BSplayer seems decent, despite the ads, but it still won't play MOVs right. DicePlayer wouldn't even launch, just errored out.

Have you tried MXPlayer? That's supposed to have hardware acceleration support.

What kind of MOV is it? (Where did you get it?)

I'll give MXPlayer a shot, haven't tried it yet. The MOV files I tried are from a Canon Rebel T3 and T3i. I've been streaming them, but I'm going to try it on an SD card too just to rule that out.

Not sure about T3, but the T3i's movies (and any of the recent Canon files, T2i / T3i / T4i / 60D / 7D / 6D / 5D2 / 5D3) have very large video bitrates, so it could be the SD card.

1080p @ 30fps are @ 45mbit/s (or, 5.6MB/s), with peaks up to 90mbit/s (up to 11.2MB/s). Your SD card (or android's processing power/bus) could be limiting.

You could easily compress it to a much lower bitrate and still retain a high image quality (because the default h.264 recording profile is Baseline @ 5.0, you could do, say, 24mbit/s (3MB/s) @ High @ 4.1 and it would be pretty close in viewing quality)

Wow, well done. Good point, this is over wireless, so those bitrates would be hard to sustain. So you think something that compresses them on the media server might work, like http://www.serviio.org/?

Oh you were streaming, got it :D

Real-time transcoder? Sure! If your system can handle it. Haven't heard of serviio, but sounds promising. I remember in the past I had to real-time transcode to my PS3, I've used PS3 Media Server and TVersity. Best of luck!

at least on browser side you can double click to zoom....but on a 50 inch you really don't need to zoom..
