So I think folks have been complaining that the HTC One does not have a Wi-FI Hot Spot host ahh but it does and I stumbled upon it quite by accident.

Download ES File Explorer form the Play Store.

Launch it click on the top button App Manager at the top of the screen.

Now Click Category and choose System apps Scroll down to the bottom of the screen hold the Wi_Fi Hotspot button and choose create a shortcut. There you go, maybe this is not news but it was news to me.

This is a guide that will walk you through Unlocking your Bootloader, Rooting, Installing a Recovery, Making a Backup, and Flashing to PagePlus.

Disclaimer: This will void your warranty. I am not responsible for any problems this may cause with your phone (but I'll do my best to get it working).

NOTE: This was all done in Windows 7. I originally tried in Windows 8, but ran into too many problems so I installed Windows 7 on another Hard Drive and booted from it.

Also, since this was done on a new install of Win 7, I do not have Word installed, so I am using WordPad, which lacks Spellcheck. I think everything is good though.

Most of the content from this tutorial was taken from the xda-developers forum and modified to fix some missing steps and to be more specific and easy to understand. I did not figure any of this out alone by myself. The members at xda-developers did. Also, a big thanks to dzap, octavio, and all of the other members that helped me to get my phone working in the Cyber Monday thread for this deal.

PagePlus Plans (Monthly or Minutes)

Unlocking the Bootloader and Rooting
  • Follow the Primo C CDMA steps. Following the Primo U GSM steps will brick your phone.
Flashing TWRP
  • Copy it into C:\fastboot\
  • Boot into Fastboot and open CMD
  • Type: fastboot flash recovery twrprecovery.img

Making a Backup
  • plug your microSD card into the phone, if you haven't already
  • boot into bootloader and select "Recovery"
  • TWRP will open
  • Select "Backup", select the items you want to backup and then swipe
  • Backup will complete and you will now have a backup on your microSD card, copy this over to your computer

Flashing to PagePlus
  • NOTE: 3G will not work. Speeds will be 1X. No one from the Cyber Monday deal has been able to get 3G to work yet. It may be possible, but don't expect it.
  • This will not work on custom AOSP ROMs, install a custom ROM (if you want) after flashing
  • Open the Play Store, search "MSL Reader", download and install
  • Open "MSL Reader", grant it root access when prompted, get your MSL and write it down
  • Call PagePlus (800) 550-2436, select 1 at the menu for activation of a new phone
  • Hold tme has been about 15-20 minutes for me during the 5 or so times I have called in
  • Tell them you are flashing a new phone to PagePlus and you need a MDN (the phone number) and a MIN. They will ask you for the ESN, read them the MEID Decimal from the back of the phone.
  • They will try to have you dial a number for Over the Air Ativation, this is a VM phone so it woin't work. Tell them it doesn't work, but you know what you're doing. They will give you the MDN, MIN, and probably the SID. You do not need the SID.
  • Install CDMA Workshop and QPST
  • Plug your phone into the computer and dial ##3424# choose "ON' to put it in diagnostic mode, click "SELECT", enter your MSL at the prompt, it should say "Diag enabled"
  • Open 'Device Manager', just hit the windows key and type it in
  • Look for "HTC Diag", it was under "Other Devices" for me. It should have a yellow exclamation point next to it.
  • Right click it and select "Update Driver...", select "Browse my computer...", select "Let me pick...", "Show all devices", "Have disk...", "Browse..."
  • Navigate to the drivers you downloaded and choose either the 64 or 32 bit driver. Whichever your OS runs. Select 'Next' and then tell Winows it's safe at the prompt.
  • Open up CDMA Workshop, select "Port" from the top and double-click your phone which will be named "HTC USB Modem #", then click "Connect" (also up top)
  • Click the Security tab
  • On the bottom right it says “SPC/user lock”, enter the MSL the MSL Reader app gave you. Click SPC and select "Send". If you entered the right MSL, it should say device unlocked successfully.
  • Click SPC again and select "Write 000000", it should say successfully written.
  • Click the "Other" tab at the top, choose "Write" from under PRL and select the PRL file you downloaded. It should say successfully written.
  • Click the Main tab, click "Read" from above the security tab, then click "Read" in the bottom right corner. It will fail to read some items, this is normal, they are inactive or are only read in the non-demo version.
  • There are two boxes that say "MIN", delete the current MIN and enter the MIN that PagePus gave you.
  • Look for the "Dir_Number" and "Dir_PCS" boxes, delete whatever is in them and enter the phone number (MDN) that PagePlus gave you.
  • Click the "Write" tab, it will write, then close CDMA Workshop, save changes when asked.
  • The phone will reboot, close CDMA Workshop and open QPST.
  • Dial ##3424# again and make sure your phone is still in Diagnostic Mode
  • Hit the Windows key on your computer keyboard, type QPST and select "QPST Configuration"
  • Click "add new port", choose the COM port that your phone is plugged into.
  • From the top bar, select "Start Clients", then "Service Programming", uncheck "Show Serial and USB/QC Diagnostic ports only", double click on your phone (mine shows up as COM# - USB/QC Data Modem) and a new window will open.
  • Click "Read from Phone" in the bottom left of QPST, enter 000000 (yor new MSL you wrote in CDMA W)
  • At the top right, there are a bunch of tabs, click the right arrow until you see the "M.IP" tab, select it when you do, on the bottom it will say Mobile IP Behavior, select "Simple IP only"
  • Double click profile 2
  • In the "HA Shared Secret", select "Enter Text String" and then type in 'vzw'. Repeat this in the "AAA Shared Secret"
  • On the right, Home Address should be set to 0.0.0.0, both Primary and Secondary HA addresses should be set to 255.255.255.255
  • Hit ok at bottom left, now look at the tabs again and navigate to the "PPP Config" tab
  • Click "um"
  • Click in the password box and type “vzw”
  • Click the AN tab
  • Password is "vzw"
  • Click "Write to phone"
  • You will now get a read only error that pops up, this is NORMAL. The phonne will reboot and you will get another error saying that the phone disconnected. This is also NORMAL.
  • You are now done with QPST.
  • When the phone reboots, make a call, dial the phone number of another cell you own or your home phone. NOTE: Your phone will still say Virgin Mobile. This is because that is built into the ROM, you will be on PagePlus. To change this you will need a custom ROM.
  • Your call will go to a PagePlus automated message. Press 1 for English. Your account is now active and you have a $2.00 balance. Your call will now go through to the number you originally called.
  • Congratulations, you're done and now on PagePlus!
  • This seemed to fix MMS.
    Dial ##3282#
    Select edit mode
enter your code (hopefully you have changed it to 000000)
Go to Advanced ==> MMSC Setting

    Name= Production
    MMS= http://mms.vtext.com/servlets/mms
Port= clear this field leave it blank
Proxy = clear this field leave it blank

Awesome! Hopefully it's true! I was thinking of taking the Evo over this, but at this price, I might just get the One.

siddichan 11-25-2012 04:00 PM

Same here. I was hoping that one of the 4Gs would go down but this price is hard to beat. If I don't see anything else go on sale tomorrow, I will probably snag this. It's definitely an improvement over my LG Rumor touch slider.

DetroitMom 11-25-2012 04:07 PM

Hmmm, I brought the Elite from Best Buy Thursday for $50, but if the One V goes on sale I'll get it.

eastcoastwester 11-25-2012 04:08 PM

Can you use this phone on the grandfathered $25 plan? I have a triumph and I hate it so, so much. Have all these issues and they won't give me another refurb after just getting a refurb in late August. Don't understand why they don't give you any kind of warranty on refurb.

zombieslayer99 11-25-2012 04:09 PM

Is this a GSM phone? I'm looking for a phone that I can unlock and use with straight talk

travfar 11-25-2012 04:12 PM

This absolutely insane. I bought a used Sprint EVO 3D just to use as a 3D travel camera. Thus I don't need the cell phone part to work. That cost me $100. With this, I can get a new one for half price that also works with my virgin account. This beats the 50% off Triumphs last year.

Edit: Sadness. I just realized this is the silly 2D One and not the 3D Evo. I'm still buying it.

DonnieT 11-25-2012 04:12 PM

Unfortunately this phone cannot be used with the 25 dollar plan. Also this is a CDMA phone not GSM.

Nope. Any smarty sold after 5/12 needs the $30 plan. Although I've heard that people have added things like the elite and not got docked.

nazgulnarsil 11-25-2012 04:13 PM

not worth going from 25 to 35/mo if I don't get 4g as part of the deal.

LunaP 11-25-2012 04:14 PM

I was hoping for an iPhone :lmao:

NoBantheSnowman 11-25-2012 04:18 PM

$50, and the normal price is $150? damn!

kahilm 11-25-2012 04:21 PM

Hmm... already ordered a Reverb for $100...

screenname 11-25-2012 04:26 PM

Do I have to activate it? Can I just use it with free WiFi hotspots to check e-mail and such?

siddichan 11-25-2012 04:31 PM

Even with a $10 increase per month, I'm still getting a better deal than most carriers and none of the headaches associated with the one I have now. The 3G is still better than what I got on my old slider with vm. I wanted a 4G steal this year but if it still looks like One V is the only one on sale come tomorrow, I'll probably end up getting it. I'm just going to do some research into battery life and any quirks people have noticed with it. :)

shoppinqueen 11-25-2012 04:33 PM

Hoping to snag a deal on the Evo 4G

to me it is worth the extra money to get a larger screen , faster cpu, more ram, front camera,

slicklorey 11-25-2012 04:38 PM

I heard there is a way to get $5 off each month by autopaying.
Is that true? How do you do that? Thanks

fyreboltx 11-25-2012 04:39 PM

I really want to get this just so I can use Bluetooth, but don't want to give up the $25/month plan.

My Triumph's Bluetooth doesn't work and Motorola is denying that there's an issue with the phone, just that my laptop, headset, and car all have faulty Bluetooth, even though all 3 work with other BT devices.

Well the specs are definitely better. 1.4 ghz processor on the Reverb vs. a 1 ghz on the HTC One. The screen size is also bigger, but it's the same resolution so less DPI.

My wife has the HTC One and it's definitely a good phone... a steal at $50. Gonna have to think this over.

Anyone ever return a phone to VM that you ordered from their site?

Take advantage of the 30 day money back guarantee. You can send them the phone back for a refund!

Just tell them it reboots all of the time or whatever. The failure rate is so high on the Triumph....they won't care. They'll believe whatever you tell them because in general, the Triumph is totally unreliable.

I RMA'd my wife's Triumph 4 times through them. Each one with a different problem (reboots, charging port issues, awful touch screen, crackly ear speaker). I did finally get a good one (which I ebay'd since the wife had given up already and gotten an Evo 4G).

Still, I appreciated how helpful the social media C.S. was.

Stock for stock the reverb is definitely better. Also for my uses (i.e. Skype) the front facing camera is a must have.

I'm guessing the $50 will start tomorrow, since the deal with $150 will end today.

I had a ton of issues with my Triumph back in the day (almost a year ago?). I sent the first one back for not working in some annoying way, and I've been reasonably satisfied with my second. Aside from the soft keys intermittently not working for a few seconds, I've had no issues with it.

Just use MIUI [androidforums.com]. A much nicer looking and quicker rom than whatever is stock. I would never, ever wish a stock Triumph upon my worst enemies. Miui makes all the difference in the world. Additionally, I'm able to set my phone up as a hotspot for my laptop. Big plus. Really, the improvements are innumerable.

If anyone wants to give their triumph one final chance, I can help you out with custom roms.

I read about some good roms for One V but I've never done phone mods. Just other electronics(game systems) and that's always with the chance of me ending up with a brick.

Has anyone modded a One V?

Seems to be a great gift for kids. MP3 player, camera, Free GrooveIP/Google Voice calling and texting (for now), free Android games, with no activation. Wait, No activation is required, right?

Triumph was a junk phone..

One V is a pretty good phone. I've had mine for probably about 3 months now and it's been great.

I'm pretty sure it has an IPS display, battery life is pretty good, gps lock is almost instant most of the time, camera functions well, love the shape/design/quality.

Shorter battery life on the V as well...

akaLTD 11-25-2012 05:24 PM

Ok .. I know this sounds stupid but what can I say. I just found out I might be able to use a smartphone for the apps, wifi, maybe GPS, etc. so what will work on this phone if it's NOT activated.

I'd rather not change my VM plan at this time but if that changes in a couple months I'd already have the phone.

Or would another phone be a better option?

Normally I'd research this for myself rather than ask but since time is short and this all all new to me .. I'd appreciate any help, opinions, etc.

That's exactly what I'm doing for my niece, nice cheap alternative to an ipod. Gonna have to return the one I bought from radioshack on Friday though.

Sorry you didn't have any luck with your Triumph. The One V does not have an IPS screen.

I had multiple triumphs and both of them had an issue where dust got under the bottom right corner of the screen (between the touch panel and the screen itself I think).

The One V might not be IPS but it's something that has hardly any color shift when viewing at angles. Typical TN screens will almost completely invert contrast, the One V's screen hardly shows ANY shift in colors/contrast at off-angles (even at almost 90 degrees).

Vivix729 11-25-2012 05:42 PM

If you currently have a Virgin Mobile plan ($35), this wouldn't be too hard to switch to, right? (asking for a friend).

etphonehome 11-25-2012 05:44 PM

Wow. I hope they have other phones super cheap as well!

moSom 11-25-2012 05:44 PM

If I could still grandfather it would be a no-brainer. But as much as I hate my Triumph I cannot spend another $120 a year to justify the irreversible switch.

I've read that people have issues with texting/calls with the Evo V. Something about a radio or antenna error or something.

That's the main reason I think I'm gonna stick with a Reverb for $100.

There's no question that the One V is a better phone. Released 9 months after the Triumph, almost every specification is better. The screen on the One is an LCD compared to the older TFT of the Triumph. Absolutely no reason to buy a Triumph right now.

dogmatixpsych 11-25-2012 05:48 PM

I'll have to consider this deal. I was thinking of switching over to the $30 T-Mobile plan and getting away from Virgin Mobile since I'd have to upgrade to the $35 plan from my $25 plan but this is a tempting deal.

I strongly dislike the Triumph (and there's little in life that I dislike). The Triumph was awful with the stock ROM and is only made somewhat bearable with MUIU. Even then, the phone is more frustrating than trying to climb a greased 100 ft. pole.

fastness 11-25-2012 05:48 PM

I just ordered the $30 Kyocera Rise (currently have the POS Samsung Intercept). Might have to return it though for this.

I might be in for one.. My blackberry is nice, but it's a pretty boring phone to use.

It would be very easy to switch.
Your friend just logs into his/her account, go through the phone switch process which takes a minute or two, and then it should be up and running. Worst case scenario, a phone call may be required to virgin mobile to clear up some settings issue (had to do it for a used phone) and all in all, worst case scenario, 4-5 minutes and your friend can start using the new phone.

What I'm really hoping is that the Galaxy S II or iPhones go on sale. If the SII hits $200, I'll likely spring for that. An iPhone 4s at $350? Definitely would buy it. That's all wishful thinking though. There's no way Virgin Mobile would lower the iPhone prices that much.

Not sure if this has been noted already, but the CSRs claim of this having a $100 dollar discount and being $49.99 is not consistent. If this phone has a $100 discount, that will make it $99.99, not $49.99. My money is on a $99.99 price :(

generaltullius 11-25-2012 06:02 PM

Are VM customer service reps credible?

Does this info seem legit? VM CSR's seem to give a lot of inaccurate info. Some earlier posters had screen shots of chats with CSRs, in which they wrongly stated that there would be no black friday sales (Evo dropped to $149).

Also, the info in this thread seems to contradict VM's official twitter feed. On the other hand, I suppose that tweet is full of questionable syntax and is open to interpretation.

Like many others, i've got my fingers and toes crossed for an S2 sale. Evo at $150 isn't a bad back up plan.

Target has been selling the iphone 4s since Thursday for $449 and giving a $100 gift card = $349. Ended yesterday.

I got the 30$ Kyocera Rise and it's awesome! It's super fast and the sliding keyboard is awesome. I had both the Evo 3D but the battery was not good on that, even with extended... I also had the Samsung Intercept, which is ok once you ROM it, there are no roms that I know for the Rise, but so far I've loaded like 30-40 apps and it's still chugging along, I use it with Talkatone. I will also buy this to give either the Rise or the One V to my mom though, such a good deal, now I've to sell the BestBuy Optimus Elite... ':(.

sollsun 11-25-2012 06:06 PM

I would rather wait for a sale on the htc evo v (1.2ghz dual core 1gb ram) rather than this. The one V has a bigger screen and is little faster than my optimus V but same ram 512mb. Also, havent looked up how easy to root the HTC phone but I have a htc flyer rooted with custom rom so I assume its just as easy.

she was able to transfer her $25 plan from the rumor touch in june

Hmmmm, according to their Twitter...

"#cybermonday from VMU #Galaxy Reverb $100 off $149.99 -- HTCOneV $99 - #payLo Montage 50% off $24.99 - 3G/4G OverdrivePro $50 off $69.99"

Would be nice to see a $49.99 price though but I think it will be $99.99. Would be great to get more confirmation on this.

Actually talked to the VM agent, and she said that it will be $100 off today $50 discount off. So it's ($149 - $100 = $49). And I actually asked her, will it be $100 off $199 or $159. And that's the answer. It might change..don't be surprised since it is the most popular cellphones in VM. And for the time, it is unknown as this time.

I'm betting it's 100 off the total price which would make it 99.99.

Would you say this is a big improvement over a LG Rumor Touch slider? I'm on the old grandfather plan at $25 and I don't mind the $10 increase if all I'm paying is $50 for this. At the same time, I read up that the One V is made of aluminum and gorilla glass in one of the links here.. Sounds highly durable and I put my slider through hell from two moves, drops and constant travel. It makes it sound like the One V is a capable replacement but now that most of you made a point about the 4G and the Evo being faster, I'm divided on which to purchase. In the end I'm still seeing a $10 monthly increase but it's a matter of how much I'm willing to put down for a phone up front.

Any advice?

Yeah, that's what I thought; it didn't make sense to me. I'm guessing it's going to be $99.99 according to logic and the twitter. I'm fine with the Optimus Elite, it's just that Bestbuy is taking forever to ship!

I think last year they made all of their phones half off for the day. No way of knowing if that happens again but certainly something to look out for. Was able to flip one on EBay easily.

The LG Rumor Touch isn't even an android phone. Its more of a regular phone with some smart capabilities. The difference is night and day. In both hardware and software.

Could you confirm this One V is a CDMA only phone? Does this ONE V have a SIM slot?
I checked online. It seems this one V does have GSM band besides CDMA. In other word, it's a global phone, with both GSM and CDMA.

I put the $100 off based on the current price. According to the sales chat agent(see attachment):

"HTC One V will go on a $100 discount and will cost $49.99"

That's what I based the post on. I'm hoping it's $49.99 and they don't just change their mind at the last minute.

Could get an Optimus Elite for $50 from Best Buy (I think it's still that price). No gurantees but many people have successfully transferred their $25 plan over. The Elite actually has the same exact CPU and GPU as the One V and has the same amount of RAM and internal storage. It is a smaller screen (3.5 vs 3.7) with a lower resolution however but has a removable battery and NFC capability.

no, this is a CDMA Only phone
CDMA only cell phones don't take SIM cards (except the new LTE models)
even if they did, they would not work with standard GSM SIM cards.

update: ScσττRΛSC³ is actually wrong. the new LTE CDMA cell phones take SIM cards
there are also world phones, which work on both CDMA networks AND GSM networks, and can use a SIM card to access GSM networks. but the HTC One V is not a world phone.

Apparantly, they changed their shipping days due to the fact a lot of orders have come in. When I first ordered it, it was 0-1 days to ship than it changed to 5-7 days to ship. Another reason not to shop at Bestbuy.com.

I've had the One V since July so let me clear some stuff up for everyone.

1) This is most definitely only CDMA (Virgin runs on Sprint's CDMA network). There are GSM varieties of the One V, but you will not get that through Virgin Mobile.

2) The screen is excellent, even in direct sunlight if the brightness is cranked up. Colors are vibrant and images are clear. As mentioned earlier, the colors don't distort at all even at extreme viewing angles.

3) The camera is great in well lit environments but not super great in low light scenes. The flash helps but it seems to have issues focusing properly when you use the flash. Sometimes it's fine, but I end up with lots of blurry and out of focus shots. Even so, it's infinitely better than my old Optimus V.

4) The custom rom community is moderately active but I haven't found one single rom where everything functions like it should (most roms have issues with the camera, camcorder or bluetooth.) I always end up going back to the stock rom with a custom kernel so I can overclock. I run my One V at 1497MHz 24/7 and I usually have around 30% battery at the end of a normal day of use. That speed bump has a huge impact on performance. One VERY important note is that trying to use GSM roms/kernels on your CDMA One V will most likely brick it. Seriously. There are lots of good informational threads at xda-developers so just do your research before you dive in. The devs are pretty strict so make sure you follow good forum etiquette.

Overall, I think it's a great phone and if the price really drops to $50, it's a no-brainer. I have no experience with the Reverb or the Evo V so I can't speak to those. If you're looking for the best deal Virgin has to offer, this is probably it. If you have any questions for me, feel free to ask.

I was just wondering about Evo V vs One V vs the durability/worth the cost. I haven't read anything on how the Evo V is when it comes to durability or battery life(And I'm at work so it makes it rather hard to do any proper research).

if you're moving up to the $35, at least make sure you're going 4G too

go for the evo 4g!

since the introduction of iphones, the 3G network has and will continue to get worse (unless more non-iphone ppl go up to 4g :).........go 4G!

You're awesome. Thank you for the details. The fact that you still have battery life at the end of the day after running it at OC is a big deal to me. I don't want to run out of juice when I'm traveling. :bounce: Rep'd!

jacetin 11-25-2012 06:48 PM

I really think everyone is getting their hopes up over a price that someone got with a talk from a random customer rep (no offense). Even the VM twitter says its going to be $99.99 and I would say that's more credible. I hope you guys get the hot deal though but there is no reliable source here.

The_Linux_Crew 11-25-2012 06:50 PM

Let me add that the EVO V is a far superior phone. If the price only drops to $99, then the $50 difference would still make the EVO V the better deal.

But like others said, $49 is a no brainer.

So will Google maps work on it without activating? I noticed in the manual it says that "location services" needs to be enabled. Is that a dependent on activating the phone? Yes, I'm cell phone/smartphone illiterate. Too much to learn in too short a time.

Can anyone offer some pros/cons or experiences for not having a keyboard for internet, email, etc? I'm just wanting to use this for the apps, wifi, etc .. for right now.

Other suggestion on which VM phone might be a good option for that but is also useful if I go to the $35/month plan in a few months?

It can use your wifi router and GPS to locate you and the maps will work.

Also, you can use a bluetooth keyboard with it if you find the screen too small. Some people also use swype, which is easier on small screens.

Make sure you get a good keyboard program though, it will make typing a lot easier. Swype and swiftkey are both good.

I'm beginning to think this might just be 50% off regular price so at $99 might be more than I want to spend right now without being able to do further research into my current AND future needs. If it does come up $49 might bite though.

Android 4.0 is a big step up from 2.3.7. If you're really interested in using the NFC capability, go for the Elite. The construction of the One V is way better (unibody metal - the Elite is all plastic). It definitely feels like a more premium device. Also, if you're into fiddling with your software/kernel, the Elite is SUPER hard to root. Maybe someone has a better procedure since the summer, but when I had the phone it was a huge hassle to get root access.

I'm beginning to think this might just be 50% off regular price so at $99 might be more than I want to spend right now without being able to do further research into my current AND future needs. If it does come up $49 might bite though.

You should check Cowboom. They have lots of Sprint phones for under $100 that will work great and are much more powerful than this one. They have used phones similar in specs to this one for around $50.

This one has a built in keyboard for $70

This one is a great phone for $100 and it also has a slide out keyboard

Since you are just using it for wifi, I think these Sprint phones are a better option, but they won't work as prepaid phones without some reprogramming.

Do you have a Virgin HTC One V cellphone? Are you sure it's not a world phone, has no SIM slot?

I'm using a Verizon CDMA HTC incredible 2 at T-mobile networks right now. My Verizon CDMA HTC incredible 2 does have a SIM slot, and my Tmobile SIM is in it..

update: ScσττRΛSC³ is actually wrong. the new LTE CDMA cell phones take SIM cards
there are also world phones, which work on both CDMA networks AND GSM networks, and can use a SIM card to access GSM networks. but the HTC One V is not a world phone.

Thoughts on why this would be worth it after just buying the elite?

http://www.phonescoop.com/phones/...,3684,3628

Performance wise...not really. The advertised clock speed is actually not the true clock speed. The Elite is actually at 1GHz just like the One V so they both have the same CPU, GPU, amount of RAM, and internal storage. One V definitely has some advantages though when it comes to a larger screen with a better resolution and ICS. Elite has some advantages when it comes to a removable batter and NFC capability. If these were the same price and you were on the $35 plan then I would definitely spring for the One V. If you have a $25 plan then the decision is a little tougher; everyone I've talked to (including myself) have been able to transfer their $25 plan no problems onto the Elite. If you don't mind losing the $25 plan then I would definitely go for the One V.

I don't own one but animedaf posted a few posts ago that...

"I've had the One V since July so let me clear some stuff up for everyone.

1) This is most definitely only CDMA (Virgin runs on Sprint's CDMA network). There are GSM varieties of the One V, but you will not get that through Virgin Mobile."

Verizon has some world phones that are both CDMA and GSM, but I don't think this is one of them.

I'll check into those.

Problem is if I upgrade to $35 plan in a couple months those phones wouldn't work with VM, I think, so then I'd end up having to buy another phone.

I'll have to think harder about what I really want to do. Phones may end up being cheaper when I finally do switch plans. ??

Thanks for the the help. I've got more research to do.

Rooting Elite is pretty easy now and I have must have put at least 5 different ROMs so far. I overclocked to 1.6 GHz and it runs pretty fast. Battery was worse at stock and now, it stays for couple of days with medium to heavy use.

Which ROM are you using? I rooted the Elite but just use Titanium Pro to remove some bloatware and freeze some others. The phone only last about a day with minimal usage.

HTC One V specs

To clear up questions on the One V's specs (citing wikipedia and yahoo! answers as credible sources? really?), here is the official HTC website for the One V on Virgin Mobile USA:

http://www.htc.com/us/smartphones...v-vmobile/

Re: GSM/world phone radios being built into the One.

It doesn't have that feature (as others have noted). But more importantly, assuming it had this feature defies reason. Virgin Mobile USA does not offer international roaming, so why would it include a gsm quad band radio in a budget handset that operates on a CDMA domestic network? That would be insane.

That depends on if you want to use data or just talk. They have talk plans from $20 (for 400 minutes and $0.15 a text) or they have 300 minute plans with unlimited texts and data for $35.

chaderino 11-25-2012 08:36 PM

Hi there,

Your $25 plan is an older plan and you can keep it as long as you don't switch to a phone that was launched after may 2012 (except the Elite I believe).
For example, if your phone breaks and you buy a new/used phone launched BEFORE May 2012, your $25 rate will still be there. If you purchase a new/used phone that launched during or after May 2012, you'll be charged the new rates.

I forgot where the list of phones are located by they're somewhere online. Hopefully someone else can post that.

It does not take sim cards. CDMA only.

the elite is now super easy to root (http://androidforums.com/elite-al...t-apk.html). takes about 15 seconds. but not many roms for it. OC'ed to 1.6 ghz with a custom kernel. and it can be used with the $25 plan.

Just use MIUI [androidforums.com]. A much nicer looking and quicker rom than whatever is stock. I would never, ever wish a stock Triumph upon my worst enemies. If anyone wants to give their triumph one final chance, I can help you out with custom roms.

I too was going to sell my Triumph but can't get over the $25 grandfathered plan unless I'm getting a 4G phone. and even then Wimax in NYC is spotty. I've tried Miui (and tried other GB roms) but GB just somehow isn't there because they won't release source code. There's also the MT-DEV build which I have yet to try. My only experience with VM was with an Intercept over a year ago on their $25 plan, but the horribly spotty internet service in Dallas, TX infuriated me to the point of just having to swith providers.
I ended up getting a 3GS with Straight Talk and the internet is a bit slow but consistent.
What I am curious about now is if in fact my crappy internet experience was do to my Intercept, not the service, and weather you guys currently on VM and sporting newer awesome phones would rate the internet service to be fast and consistent?
If so, I may return to VM, and save $10 a month from what I pay now.

I've done that before on other phones. It really drops the market when many are sold on ebay. It was looking like a $50 profit each when I purchased the phones, but in the days following I couldnt sell them to make a profit. I had to take some back, or hold onto them for about 50 days.

a bit off topic. I use my phone at work and home 95% of the time - where i have wireless. Is it possible to make and receive calls w/out using minutes - just on wireless? If so I may consider switching to VM with the 300 minute plan...

edit: I know this is possible. I guess Im wondering how well does it work? (echo, other sounds) and how does it interface (like do i have to switch it on and off when i get home/work) tks.

Is cashback based on what you pay, or the original price of the phone?
This is what I see in the FW details:
$5.00 on phones up to $49.99
$12.50 on phones $50-$149.99
$17.50 on phones $150-$199.99
$22.50 on phones $200+
$12.50 on iPhones
We're only paying $49.99 for this phone so if cashback is based on what you pay, then you would only get back $5, correct?
Going from the Mr. R.E. Bates site shows, "You will earn $7.00 Cash for Completing the Offer." But there aren't any details about what offer they're referring to.

Check out the GrooveIP app, which will work with Google Voice over wi-fi. I personally haven't tried it, but I've read about it from other SDers.

It has already dropped to $49.99.

Groove IP app, about $5 for androids. It may be on sale. Doesnt work perfectly, but it works ok. It seems to delay my voice when I use it.

If you add it to cart then the price will change to $49.99.

Looking at Virgins map coverage and it doesn't look great, they use Sprint towers but I guess they don't use Verizon's as well? Looks very sporadic and making me nervous.

There's a GrooveIP Lite that is free.
They suggest an upgrade (i.e. pay monies) to remove ads and enable the following features:
- Calls over a mobile data connection not just WiFi
- Native dialer integration
- Proximity sensor support
- Change sign in status or sign in invisible
I don't have any experience with either, so I don't know if the free version is any good.

edit: I know this is possible. I guess Im wondering how well does it work? (echo, other sounds) and how does it interface (like do i have to switch it on and off when i get home/work) tks.

I have used Groove IP for about 6 hours total. About 5 hours of that I experienced delays (1-7 seconds), on very fast internet. You hear the other person just fine, but it took a while for them to hear me. Other than that, it worked without skipping or lagging or noise. You would just turn the app on and call from the app with a google number which people could also call.

I used to use Skype at $3/month for unlimited which worked great, but people couldnt call you.

update: ScσττRΛSC³ is actually wrong. the new LTE CDMA cell phones take SIM cards
there are also world phones, which work on both CDMA networks AND GSM networks, and can use a SIM card to access GSM networks. but the HTC One V is not a world phone.

Phone arena isn't always right. Verizon's first hd smartphone, the Rezound is a quad band gsm in addition to 1xevdo and lte, actually it was factory sim unlocked and could be used on AT&T, tmobile or any gsm carrier for voice. The phone has been out now for over a year, so the info has been wrong for some time as it doesn't list any gsm capabilities.

If you're buying: Make sure you're adding the HTC One V to your cart. NOT the HTC Evo V. HTC One V once added to the cart will look like the following attachment.

Enjoy all! :woot:

Truly unlimited. They do throttle you after 2.5 gigs, but they do not cut you off.

NajibH 11-25-2012 09:27 PM

Oh, do i need to sign up for a 2 year contract for this or its like metro pcs?

Suntot 11-25-2012 09:27 PM

if only VM's data speed was a bit faster. I am about to give up on my service. Sometimes slower than dial up.

No contract, no commitment.

MyBFFisaPanda 11-25-2012 09:28 PM

I got the LG Optimus Slider around this same time last year for about the same price thanks to a deal posted here on Slickdeals. Looking forward to another inexpensive upgrade. :) TY & repped OP!

pokymon 11-25-2012 09:28 PM

Is there any contracts?

They say it throttles it down after 2(?)GB i think. I've never really noticed the throttling, but it always seems slow with my Optimus V. I used it in the middle of nowhere in VA and it has about the same speed in Ft. Lauderdale. It was great about a year and a half ago, but it has gotten pretty crappy.
