TCL uses Samsung panels, picture quality is GREAT. TCL is the only "cheap" brand tv that I trust..would take it any day over any of the other cheap brands.

Check out the reviews on Amazon for some of their TVs.

*NEVERMIND, it is now working after trying the link in DealTalk :) Man, now to figure what to do. I was going to replace my aging DLP 42" in the bedroom, but I think it's too small and I already have two 32" LCDs in guest bedrooms....hmmm

Good reviews on Amazon.

A bit pensive about the $100 MIR as I have read about nightmares with Tiger Direct on getting your money.

Also, I called Amazon and their 14 day price guarantee does NOT include mail in rebates. Short answer - Amazon will not price match this.

They seem to be good with rebates. I have submitted multiple rebates in the last few months and didn't find any problems so far.

The TV deal was having the seiko 32" cancelled by sears.

I got the 42" tcl for 179 and it's not bad at all. This is a decent price for the size and features.

proppat 11-27-2012 11:07 AM

All the nightmares with TD rebates come from years ago when TD didn't have their act together. Some people will never let that go. TD is just fine with rebates now. Even back in the day I never got screwed over by their rebates, but I also took the proper precautions and mailed everything certified mail (as you should with shady companies).

But now, I wouldn't worry about the rebates at all. Just follow their clearly displayed instructions for rebate submittal and you'll get them back every time.

ListedGuru 11-27-2012 11:32 AM

I believe these TCL LED's are a bit thicker than the average LED because they use direct led backlighting as opposed to edge lit. This should produce a more even picture with less flashlighting, etc.

Here's a link:

I'm looking for a deal on the 55" model:)

Stennie! 11-27-2012 11:33 AM

Uh oh, I bit but the extra $50 rebate shows this:

"Purchase a qualified product listed on this form between the purchase dates
of 11/12/2012 through 11/17/2012."

Why is this showing up now? Looks like it won't be valid... already bit before reading that. :(

EDIT: Nevermind. The extra $50 came straight off the price. The extra linked rebate form on the checkout page seems to be just an error. Whew.

He's talking about the extra $50 mail in rebate. After checking out it says you are eligible for $150 in rebates... crossing fingers..

Docnoq 11-27-2012 11:42 AM

For some reason it showed up as 449.99 on my phone's Chrome browser and $499.99 on the default browser. After completing the purchase it also sent me a link to two rebates of $100 and $50. If I can score both rebates, this deal just became even more amazing. Thanks op

No joke. If I didn't just buy a Wii U, I'd be rearranging all the TVs in the house tonight. The best thing about upgrading a TV is that every room in the house ends up getting an upgrade by the time you're done moving things around :)

Yeah, I was linked to this one as well:

... which is the invalid one. I just realized it dropped the price paid upfront to $450, so after the $100 rebate linked it'll be only $350. My bad. :sleepy:

Two questions:

1. Is the 240hz defeatable?
2. Will it 1:1 pixel map over HDMI?

I can hardly tell the difference between the 42 and 50" but that's just me because i don't sit too far away but can going from the 32" to 42" , it's a world of a difference. 32" just feels too small.

Weird, I don't see that for me and i'm using a residential address.. Showing me $34.31 for shipping

sugarsnacks 11-27-2012 11:56 AM

Free shipping is only with their "Econoship" ($50/yr - kinda like amazon prime).

Fine print:
**FREE SHIPPING applies to orders with a product total of $100 or more via Econoship delivery to residential addresses only in the 48 continental United States. Oversized orders that require delivery by truck do not qualify. Expedited delivery services are also available. For estimated delivery dates and options please enter your shipping address in checkout. B2B orders do not qualify. Econoship not available via Google Checkout.

I may bite regardless. $23 shipping for me brings it to $374 after rebate. Not bad.

whitson77 11-27-2012 11:57 AM

I went to Fry's to look at these in person and was not impressed at all. It was wash out and not a really good picture in comparison with the name brands that were next to it. And they were 55 inch Sony and Samsung that were their basic LED TVs. Not their high end models at all. And it was no comparison. Check it out for yourself before you pull the trigger.

dat4ik 11-27-2012 11:57 AM

thanks for reposting - i wouldn't have seen the price reduction if not for that.

I just got a 50" LCD for $350 shipped. Now I am tempted with this one as there is 10% cash back from discover making it $305AR plus free extra 1 year warranty from Discover.

Update: Forget about it. It has only 2 HDMI port and the single review looks pretty bad.

240hz is just a spec of the screen. What you're thinking about is Motion Plus (or the 10s of other names used by manufacturer's), which is an option on TVs that give that gross, super smooth, "soap opera-y" look that you're talking about. The main benefit of 120hz (or in this case, 240hz) is that it can display 24fps movies without 3:2 pulldown (120 is divisible by 24, so 3:2 pulldown isn't needed), which makes your typical movie look better than it would on a 60hz tv. 240hz tv's are kinda pointless unless you're playing 48fps video (which I don't believe is commercially available or even playable on a blu-ray player) or if you're using technology like Sony has in their Playstation 3D display that allows 2 people to see different images on the same screen via shutter glasses (which this TV doesn't support).

I imagine they got a good deal on slow 240hz panels because they were slow (12ms) and no one cares about 240hz LCDs yet.

Just fyi, When I ordered it a few minutes ago I didn't have to use their "Econoship" option. There was some sort of free ground option for me when I checked out (I am in TN)

Very well may have already changed but it wasn't more than 15 minutes ago that I ordered.

Tempting, but can't do it. I've been to too many friends' places to watch the game on their "new, awesome TV" only to think to myself "wow, the picture quality is crap." I would recommend anyone considering this deal to actually go to a store and look at it face to face.

You can get it at Circuit City as well to avoid the tax (in Texas). About $23 shipping though compared to the $37 tax that I saved.

I checked a bunch of times to make absolutely sure I wasn't missing anything. Boston area didn't give me such option upon final checkout. A bit deceiving, Tigerdirect. Either way, dirt cheap.

Most LED TV's I've been seeing typically have a contrast ratio of 4,000,000-8,000,000:1. I see this only has 100,000:1. How much of a sacrifice is this in quality and performance?

40 to 48 a big jump?

If you already have regular TVs, consider a projector for your mancave. I got one this summer with 100" screen and it is a blast watching movies and playing video games. Black Ops II zombies with four person local split screen was a lot of fun over the holidays, compared to squinting at a little LCD TV. 40" to 48" will provide a decent jump in viewing size though, if you must have a regular TV.

Contrast ratios numbers are meaningless because there's no standard for measuring them. It's no more than marketing BS. The only way to tell is to look at tvs next to each other in person or read a trusted review online.

Have you adjusted any of the settings on your existing TVs? If you still have them set to "vivid" or "dynamic" you are not doing yourself any favors.

Google "calibration settings" for your TV and find something that works better for you. Breath some life into those older sets. Typically you start with "movie" or "cinema" mode and make adjustments from there.

Dynamic backlighting is not what you think it is. If you have them set to vivid or dynamic it will still blind you.

Sorry guys I'm pretty useless when it comes to this. Wattage - I have no clue but it does sound good :P

Turning off the 240Hz - i have looked at just about every single option on the settings menu for this TV and I haven't seen that.

Ultimately, it's not a TV that's highly customizable but if you want something with a decent picture and good sound for a bargain price, this is it.

I tried to multi-quote to answer 2 questions at once but seems I failed :/

It does not overscan and I have not seen a feature to adjust the Mhz settings - and I've clicked through all the display image features to see what I can do to make it look better.

It's got a decent picture but I just expected something more. The only difference I see form an LCD TV is that it looks good from any angle.

Agreed. Several years ago while shopping for a TV, I compared TVs in the 40" range with larger TVs, and ended up with a 47". The larger TV is much better in terms of viewing experience. I would only go with a smaller TV if the room were small and viewers would be sitting close to the TV.

Also a friend of mine bought a 40" TV because it fit inside a wall cut-out that previously held his 4x3 old style picture tube TV - and he regretted that purchase for years. Finally he convinced his wife to let him panel over the wall cut-out and upgraded to a 55" TV. Like night and day watching that big screen.

120hz TVs most definitely are NOT merely that motion plus branding. In fact, you can buy 120hz TVs that don't even offer that software option that guesses and adds in new frames. As I said, 120hz IS a TV spec (not a software option...i.e., it actually does display 120fps) and it's extremely useful for watching 24fps video (as the TV merely displays each of the 24 frames 5 times instead of showing every third frame 3 times instead of two). Poor marketing has confused the ACTUAL hardware spec with a software filter manufacturer's have added to their TVs.

As far as this 240hz, it's a useless spec unless you actually like applying the motion smoothing video filter; however, it will be important when 48fps video hits the market.

Hahahaha

I really don't think it's running on 240hz, however, from what I've read, there isn't anything that operates at that Hz anyway. For example, when I play ps3 games on this TV it looks pretty good, not amazing but good and that outputs at 60hz (correct me if I'm wrong). The picture is very smooth and there's no lag on fast play games like COD BO or Hitman or Uncharted 3.

With Netflix is where I see a lack of a good picture - it's just meh.

Regular TV is bright and clear.

DVD- meh, Blu-ray - nice.

Most TCL models do NOT use Samsung panels. Especially models before 2011. The 32" 2010 models had atrocious ghosting, as though you're watching TV on a big original PSP.

Wouldn't this have the same benefit vis-a-vis 24fps video? That is instead of 3:2 pulldown, it will just show each frame 10 times resulting in smoother motion for film.

sosimple 11-27-2012 12:50 PM

Technically, does a rebate even have anything to do with TigerDirect or wherever you purchased an item from? It has to do with the manufacturer or rebate processor right?

If you go to Best Buy and buy a Sony tv with Sony rebate, is it in Best Buy's control at all how Sony handles the rebates?

Just the train of thought I'm having regarding rebates. So far the Tiger Direct rebates I am working on with a mobo/cpu combo seems to be handled by different companies. Nothing technically to do with tiger direct.

savemybucks 11-27-2012 12:51 PM

Also, I called Amazon and their 14 day price guarantee does NOT include mail in rebates. Short answer - Amazon will not price match this.

But now, I wouldn't worry about the rebates at all. Just follow their clearly displayed instructions for rebate submittal and you'll get them back every time.

Agreed. There are a lot of people who bad-mouth TD and their rebates, but I have had all of my rebates fulfilled without problems for the past two years. About 8 rebates per year.

I think there's actually some hardware interpolation going on that takes frames 1 and 2, then stuffs a bunch of frames inbetween them and calculates how the pixels change, then basically animates the difference and smooths it - for that glorious soap opera effect.

Rumors of Samsung panels for this TV..

I'm not aware Samsung makes any 48" panels? The only panel around this size is 46" that are made by Samsung. So I doubt this is a Samsung panel. If you're buying this expecting a Samsung panel I think you will be disappointed. It isn't an LG either because LG makes 47" panels. Probably a Chinese vendor like AOU or 3rd rate panel most likely. Correct me if I'm wrong.

The only time 120hz/240hz would ever matter is 24fps content (mostly film based movies). It sounds like this TV doesn't do the "soap opera" processing that some people find helpful for sports viewing, but that's probably a good thing.

The real issue for me is TD's return policy. I saw it on the page just now; No returns unless the item is defective. Deal. Breaker.

This is a Tigerdirect rebate.
Rebates can come from the store itself or direct from the manufacturer.

So it can be both ways.

Correct, you get the same benefit with 24fps video on a 120hz panel as you would with a 240hz panel. It's just that 240hz is kind of redundant at this point because (I'm reasonably certain that) the current HDMI spec doesn't even support 1080p@48fps (or, if it does, there's no standard for it). Possibly there's some benefit with sets that support 3d (I wouldn't know), but as this doesn't support 3D anyway it doesn't matter.

This does suck, but I'm comforted by the fact that if I don't like it I can very likely get my $350 back by putting it on Craigslist, possibly with a couple extra bucks profit.

Great to hear. Thanks so much. I was looking for something like this. I was debating with 50, 51, 55, 60.

I figured 60 was too big and maybe 55. Was thinking of 51 but I think 48 to 51 is not a bigt change but 40 to 48 is huge. Now to bite or not to bite!
