Costco BM Kirkland Signature 20 year Single Malt scotch whisky for $44.99

1 Attachment(s)
This years edition of Costco KS private label single malt is available in some stores in MA. Price $44.99 per 750ml bottle. It is aged 20 years and sherry cask finished. Seems like a great deal for the age for fellow SDers. If you've tried it, please share some tasting notes here.
  • Costco Item Number 650728
  • You usually don't need Costco membership if you are only buying liquor. At least where I am, no surcharge either, you pay the same as us members.
  • Due to state liquor regulations etc, some Costco liquor stores are operated by independent liquor/wine shops that may/can not carry Costco KS private label products
  • Call your stores ahead to verify availability if in doubt

Macallan was shown as the distillery in last year's version but the price was about twice as much. This year they might have gotten this from a different Speyside source.

Cheers.

tcpoob 11-30-2012 04:44 PM

Yes edited original text with the Costco item # 650728. Supply is very limited. My buddy just picked up a case (12 bottles).

cipperob 11-30-2012 04:45 PM

I've been asking for it in Clearwater, FL and they have been telling me they weren't going to have it this year...perhaps it was just late. I'll check it out tomorrow, thanks

kris259 11-30-2012 05:05 PM

Ill be at the Selma Costco in San Antonio Texas tomorrow... Ill post if I find it

wasabi_fu 11-30-2012 05:08 PM

How does this compare to Kirkland Macallan?

Whisperwind 11-30-2012 05:15 PM

none in michigan, shame

jf2go 11-30-2012 05:18 PM

None available at my local Costco *yet*. The store said that they should be available late next week though. Great find OP, Thanks!

notaxstate 11-30-2012 05:22 PM

Bought 4 bottles yesterday at Costco. They were flying off the shelves and remember they can't restock this item as this is not something they can usually procure on demand. Last year 17 year old Kirkland brand Macallan was on shelves for only 2 weeks. This batch has been procured and sold to Costco by Alexander Murray & Co who are leading private label whiskey

Also this is not peaty and very smooth. 20yr makes a difference. Plus these are finished in sherry oak casks which Macallan does as well.

Any 20yr old Single malt will cost atleast $80 in liquor stores. Also this will never go bad and is good investment considering price of whiskey has gone up considerably over past few years.

Indeed, I called the liquor store attached to Costco North Austin.
They confirmed no Kirkland labelled liquor is sold anywhere in Texas.

i think as far as snooty goes - wines, then beers, forget the rest, it was somewhere on reddit about Vodka

Manadyne 11-30-2012 06:10 PM

Twin Liquors usually has some good Scotch deals going, if you're willing to buy 2 bottles at once.

tcpoob 11-30-2012 07:21 PM

In some states with specific laws on liquor license, Costco may partner with an independent provider to have a store on premise but run by 3rd party. Those stores can not carry Kirkland Signature IIRC.

As far as tasting goes, very smooth, mellow, and I agree, not peaty. I am going back for a few more over the weekend.

Last year's from Macallan was priced at $90 ish a bottle but Costco ran out soon before I made a move.

lifexpert 11-30-2012 07:24 PM

I am in. I have a $60 bottle of vodka saved too.

IsThisRealLife 11-30-2012 07:27 PM

Will go tomorrow, what else they make?

tcpoob 11-30-2012 07:35 PM

While we are at it, I heard the ks private label vodka is a great value, triple(?) distilled in France, some say it tastes like Grey Goose, at 1/2 the price. You do have to get them in1.75 liter tall bottles. I stocked up a few at $30 each and today i found it reduced to $23.99

FYI just be careful which Kirkland Vodka you buy. One is made in America and like $15 and the other is over seas at ~$24. Haven't tried the American one but the other one is mighty good.

Going out to grab a bottle of this stuff here in Madison, WI.(checked earlier but wanted to see other reviews before purchasing) Haven't ever had a bottle of good scotch so at this price it's worth a shot. Hell maybe 2, one to drink and another to save....for later :)

ageedoy 11-30-2012 10:36 PM

This just came out, so you aren't going to get many real reviews.

Chivas is a blended whisky, this is a single malt. Single malts generally (not always) command a higher price.

They are both made in speyside from whisky aged 18-20 years. The extra two years aren't magical. They will just mellow things out a bit more.

Both are likely good stuff. I'd love to try a bottle for $45. Drink what you like.

Why do people compare to grey goose as being a good buy? grey goose is a mid tier vodka that's generally very over priced for it's ranking. You can buy $13-15 vodkas that rank in the mid 90's and regularly take home gold awards so why would you pay more than that for something that tastes like a mediocre vodka?

I didnt say it was the best bang for the buck.. but the costco kirkland price makes it competitive... esp if you got costco amex/costco executive 2% cash back and are already at costco...

grey goose has a "name"... just like patron has a "name" for tequila... IMO patron is $hit and I try to avoid it, even for free...the masses buy names not best bang for the buck or best at the lowest price... look at apple... isheep buy marketing and "name"....

there is also european rankings

Edit: Here's another link I found with rankings it's not a competition but does actually have Grey Goose included in the ranking since I don't even think Grey Goose has done a competition since Bacardi bought them.

Understood but slickdeals is generally about best bang for the buck which definitely does not apply to grey goose... it's like the starbucks of vodka it's really mid range as far as quality goes but it's exactly the same everywhere you go.

I generally go with in no particular order Stoli, Absolut, Ketel One, Van Gogh, Chopin, Monopolowa.

It definitely is, it's just a name that's everywhere it's not a great drink. If you randomly asked me what vodka you should get at random place for random person I would probably say Grey Goose because it's always exactly the same so you know exactly what you're getting every time. That's not to call it good but it's completely consistent so I do suggest it and if I'm some place that Grey Goose is the best name I recognize there I'll probably pick it but beyond that I don't have much good to say about it since it's generally very overpriced and pretty mediocre.

What's wrong with Albertson's Vodka?! You drink alcohol to get drunk! As a Slickdealer, as long as you get drunk, it doesn't matter if it's Louie 13th or rubbing alcohol! :bounce:

Monopolowa is really good especially chilled, and it's only 10 bucks at Trader Joes here. They also have a speyside 21 for under 40 if I recall correctly but will try to go to Costco in the eastbay to see if there is any Kirkland sig available

vamos 12-01-2012 11:06 AM

Not to threadjack but as this veered into vodka I thought I'd mention Costco also has KS branded 100% agave blanco tequila now as well. $18 for 1.75l.

I'm no cunny-sewer but found it to be quite decent. A bit muted on the vegetal flavors perhaps compared
others but for a price cheaper than Cuervo, its abt as slick as it gets for 100% agave tequila.

For those that have scored the 20 year old KS single malt scotch, drink up and post a review here.

On Bookers: about $41 for a regular size bottle with wooden case. Other retailers in the area sell it for anywhere between $46 - $50+ regular price. YMMV. This one is up there among my favorites.

ALSO if you live in an area with asian grocery stores JW blue can be found for 130 a bottle, which I think is pretty damn good. If you are in SoCal 168 off valley and garfield has it. I passed as for that money I could buy 3 of these bottles.

JW is blended, which means it isn't aged and barreled, they blend different whiskies together to create a desired taste.

JW is backed by one of the biggest alcochol companies in the world (DIAGEO) and has extremely good marketing, similar to how I would always prefer don julio, all I ever hear is patron and that's because they spend money on their marketing really well.

2. Single match scotch is defined here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Single_malt_Scotch
3. Costco never marks up items more than 15% so this upcoming buy should be good.
4. SoCal Reports shipments incoming Dec. 4/5

all i can say is the more I drink it, the more i like it. it's very very smooth and i've had it for 3 nights in a row in moderate volume, both straight and on the rocks. i am no expert on this however.

Olde English has more of a distinguished taste w/ hints of hazelnut and slight tobacco aftertones. Definitely more of an after dinner drink or perhaps an 11am wakeup. The 20 year scotch malt has slight comparisons but after drinking 40 oz of it I was feeling sick to my stomach. Overall the OE 800 easily beats the Single malt in terms of something I can drink on my porch, hollering at passing women, at 9 in the morning.

Unless they are familiar with the taste, I'm sure they wouldnt know either. Although, it's a pretty clever idea, as I'm sure they gained appreciation for Cutty's while being poured from that bottle :lmao:

Vodka is supposed to be a neutral spirit. It should have no discernible taste or smell. I seriously doubt most people could tell the difference between cheap and expensive vodkas.

Chmeeee 12-01-2012 07:49 PM

Picked up a bottle today in Waltham, MA. Couldn't wait, so cracked it open for an afternoon Scotch. I'm not great with the descriptions, but I'd put it somewhere between a Glenmorangie and a Macallan, but considerably smoother than either (comparing it to the 10-12 year expressions).

Overall though, I still prefer the other bottles that I get in this price range, namely Balvenie Doublewood, Laphroaig 10, Ardbeg 10. I do generally prefer the peated Scotches, which this is not.

You've now successfully linked to another article from 2008 about 5 random vodkas and 3 random people found in bars... and an article from 2007 about an article from 2005 about 6 random vodkas and 6 random people...

So now in the sum of 3 random articles you've managed a total test panel of 15-16 random people with no qualifications judging roughly the same number of random vodkas...

Let's try this in another category, can the average person tell the difference between a quality set of headphones and their crappy skull candies? No, no they can't. Am I still always going to suggest that people buy the quality set that is the same price or cheaper than their crappy set? Yes, yes I am. Can the average person tell the difference between 720p and 1080p or the difference between a quality TV and a crappy one? Nope, not in the least it's the main reason consumer laptops have such shitty resolutions and bad models of TVs sell at the same volume as good models. Am I always going to suggest people buy the best quality picture TV available in their price range? Yes, yes I am.

See my point? I'm not in anyway attempting to argue that the average person can tell the difference between smirnoff and monopolowa I'm simply saying why would I suggest the crap tier smirnoff that's $10-15 a bottle when I can suggest the gold tier monopolowa that has ranked 92-96 out of 100 for the past 5 years in a row and is $10-15 a bottle... I don't get why you would even argue that people should just buy smirnoff when they can actually buy great vodka for the same price as smirnoff just because the average person can't tell the difference between the two doesn't mean they're never going to lend their headphones to someone with better than average hearing or have someone with discerning eyes watch their tv or someone with a discerning palate drink their vodka. I will always suggest the best quality for the lowest price.

I agree 100%.

However, these reviews [tastings.com] you've linked to are complete bullshit. I don't have professional experience with spirits, but I have a background in wine analysis and I can tell you the descriptors used for these vodkas are complete nonsense and undermine the credibility of the ratings. Each review is more ridiculous than the next.

tennisplayer888 12-01-2012 09:20 PM

Quick question, after opening a bottle of alcohol such as this, how long is the shelf life after opening, I am not a heavy drinker, so I am just wondering?

Erechtheus 12-01-2012 09:22 PM

IIRC, liquor should have at least a couple year shelf life.

I provided 2 links, 1 to the most respected wine and spirits competition in the United States and 1 to the most respected wine and spirits competition in the world... The 3rd link I added later and didn't know it was but after reading it one of the weighted measures they use for scoring in the spirits awards and scores in the 2 competitions I named as well as several others. You're welcome to call it all laughable bullshit if you want but it's a massive step up from anything you've linked or buying based on marketing not taste as most people who buy Smirnoff and Grey Goose do...

I honestly don't even know why you're arguing with me because you seem to completely agree that you should buy low price high quality and I originally posted those links because people were comparing KS vodka to Grey Goose as a high quality which it's not... they haven't even been to a competition since they were bought by Bacardi and Grey Goose loses just about any blind taste test you put it in with quality vodkas. Why you're suggesting Smirnoff I have no idea since it's the same cost as Monopolowa or several other great vodkas but Smirnoff happens to be the #1 brand name in the US it's the Budweiser of vodka...

Look, I agree with you. Yes, why wouldn't you choose the highest rated vodka for the lowest price? Regardless, I'm no connoisseur of vodkas and I'd NEVER drink one straight. When I drink vodka it's mixed with something - so, unless it's an egregiously shitty vodka, I'm tasting the other ingredients.

I drink vodka neat about as often as I drink it mixed so that's probably where you're running into issues, if you drink mixed vodka then in about 90% of drinks it's going to be identical the only place you even might notice a difference is if you have a mixed drink with really light flavors then a vodka with citrus notes might accent some of those flavors but otherwise there is going to be no difference. Drinking vodka neat you care a lot more about what vodka you're drinking.

Didn't know that either, but I am in CA so should be good here ;) Also for people wondering you do not need to have a Costco membership to buy Liquor / Beer. You are allowed to buy 2 at a time IE: 2 bottles of Whiskey or 2 30 racks of beer etc. Thanks for the heads up OP!

Pretty much forever. Once it gets below 50%, it will start slooooowly degrading due to the oxygen, but it will never go "bad". I once had a glass of Crown Royal from a bottle that had been open (not literally uncapped of course) for approximately 50 years. It tasted the same as a new bottle.

At least in MA, the liquor store is on the exit side of the registers, so you go in the out, bypass the card checker. Cashier does not require member card.

No, you just go to customer service to a get a pass, tell them your buying alcohol :woot: When i'm near Costco I usually end up buying my 36 packs there since you save a few bucks. I think I figured it out one day that you basically get 6 free beers since they have 36 packs instead of the usual 30 packs.

Costco's selection tend to be limited and i've not seen Lagavulin 16 in my area. They used to carry Oban years ago that I liked.

To Kxie: Glenfiddich, like Glenlivet, is one of the best selling Speyside malt, so it is possible this year's is Glenfiddich based. A quick search shows Glenfiddich 18 commands $70 and 21 year is about $130. Gotta love Costco. I'd be thrilled if it's still Macallan based like last year but I doubt it.

PS. Didn't find any 20 year Kirkland scotch in City of Industry, CA store.

LivninSC 12-02-2012 10:57 AM

Not exactly on topic but my Costco had a fancy glass case with several expensive bottles ranging from 1k cognac up to 4k Jamaican rum. I couldn't believe rum would ever be that expensive!

LGCubana 12-02-2012 11:58 AM

I wandered into the Pembroke Pines, Fl branch just to see if they were carrying it. When I saw that they did have it, I decided to pickup a bottle. As I'm waiting to pay another customer picked up 4 bottles. He told me that he has been buying the series religiously for years.

My impression:
I'm not a scotch connesuer, I normally drink 12 yr old Appletons rum and Basil Hayden's bourbon.
Bouqet: a subtle sweetness with smokey notes. usually I find a lot of scotches to be too sharp for my nose, but not this one
Taste: as expected with a 20 yr old, the flavors are smooth and refined. smokey notes with a little honey and a subtle lingering aftertaste that (to my uneducated palette) includes a hint of (laugh if you will) pink bubble gum.

The Kirkland American Vodka is pretty darn good in my opinion. Comparable to a Svedka or similar Vodka. Obviously not as good as their Grey Goose knockoff but definitely worth the ~$15

Good to know about the American Vodka, I haven't actually tried it. Also I went to the new Costco in Sun Prairie not the one in Middleton. I would assume if one had it though the other should as well.

Costco in Northeast US doesn't sell anything except Glenlivet 12yr, Macallan 12yr and Dalhwnie 15yr in terms of single malt. They only sell private label once a year between thanksgiving and Christmas.

Also they never have any rebates on liquor that I have seen on Single malt and blended whiskey. Sucks.

Wish they had Oban, Lagavulin, Laproaig, Ardbeg or higher end Macallan.

Oban (and Glenkinchie, I believe) are on instant rebate sale right now in California.

It was alive and well in Sun Prairie as of about an hour ago (at least 20 bottles left). I would assume Middleton would have it as well, though it might sell out faster there, you know those west siders and their refined tastes :P

I've got a glass in hand right now (neat). I'm really more of an Islay gal, the more aggressive the better. This is mild and very very smooth, not what I usually buy but it's good stuff. A steal for the price.

It looks like we're out of luck, at least for the time being. It sounds like they're getting it in SoCal, and it's hard to imagine that they would leave us dry like that. That just wouldn't be fair.

Thanks for taking the time to summarize this better than I could. :)

I'm not saying it is impossible, but this is highly suspicious. Macallan 18 year old sells for $150+ a bottle. Macallan is also one of the most popular single malt whiskeys. If they had a whole bunch of excess 20 year old laying around, why would they dump it at costco for pennies on the dollar? Even if it didn't meet their quality metrics they could still do a lot of different things with it and get a better return.

I'd love to be proven wrong and take advantage of it.

I am not saying that Grey Goose is the best vodka out there, but what I am saying is that for the amount of vodka Kirkland provides per bottle for the price they sell it for compared to the price Grey Goose charges per bottle its a very good value. If you dont like Grey Goose obviously dont drink the Kirkland brand then.

VanDammage 12-02-2012 07:39 PM

Update. Purchased two bottles in Alpharetta GA location. 45 bucks. They had at least 80 bottles. Perimeter location had at least 100 bottles when I called.

Tasting impressions: Insanely smooth. Very nice hints of sherry with first taste, and a slight spicy finish. For the money, you are not going to get much better value. Probably about equal to 90-110 dollar range speyside varieties I have tried.

Well the links I provided for Vodka apply equally to this thread since they are for International wine and spirits competitions that compare every brand that wants to compete and give it a ranking :P just remove "vodka" from the search and replace it with your alcohol of choice. But yeah the vodka discussion went on pretty long.

MadPup 12-02-2012 07:46 PM

I know very little about whisk(e)y. Am I right in assuming that whisky, unlike wine, does not continue to mature in the bottle? In other words, I assume it doesn't make much sense to buy the stuff and lay in down for 30 years in the hope that it will appreciate? I'm also guessing that even if it did, a CostCo brand might not be the one to choose.

At $45, this or Glenlivet or Johnnie Walker black or something else brand name?

I would like to try it, but at $45 I'm hesitant to buy a store brand, when I could just very well plop my money down for a competitor, brand name whiskey, that I have tried and know what I'm getting.

JW is blended, this is single malt. Yes you can find some scotch 10, 12 or even 15 year, but good luck finding a 20 year at this price. Being private label makes it a little more mysterious.

Another thread by justinre reported a northern California Costco has gotten the KS private label 15 year from The Macallan Distillery, as follows, credit goes to him if you like it:
$50 750mL bottle. Item 419432. Kirkland Signature from Macallan Distillery Single Malt Scotch Whiskey

Why not pick up one of each if you have access to both and sample them side by side ...

Thanks. It seems like the west coast is getting the 15 Year Kirkland Signature from Macallan, while the east coast is getting the 20 Year Kirkland private label. I worked with a front end rep to try to find the 20, but the only item she could find me was the 15.

Is there sarcasm in there I'm not seeing????

At 30, I can no longer drink the cheap stuff just to get drunk anymore. I have aquired a taste for the finer liquors, wines, and beers in life. Expensive but wonderful habit! No more getting crazy drunk though!

Question is, how many should I stock up! Deals like this only around for a couple of weeks, or until sold out, once a year. I just bought my first home and I'm about to move in next weekend. Been buying so many things for the house made my pocket pretty light! I was thinking 12 but I might just do 6 bottles.

My favorites probably would knock you out of your boots, but I'd suggest Balvenie and Glenmorangie as good starting points for smooth, mild flavor. Try and track down a whisky tasting if you can, I go to one every year with 200 bottles available for tasting. Much better than buying a $40-60 bottle blind.

*UPDATE FOR BAY AREA STORES*

My sister works at Costco so I asked her to look up this item for my local Costco (San Leandro). They will be getting a shipment Tomorrow 12/4. 528 bottles San Leandro store $44.50.

I'm assuming this will be for most Bay Area stores if not everywhere in California because someone already mentioned the Socal area will get them on 12/3 -12/4. She said make sure you call first because sometimes the new shipments will sit on the receiving dock for a while before they actually put them out.

Good luck people.

For those in MA, the 20 year KS Single Malt is confirmed in stock in Danvers, Waltham, Avon (per another contributor in this thread). The Danvers store by Rt-1 N first put these on display on the shelf last Friday. Today at least half were sold. They still have about 60 bottles. Attached Costco Connection pdf infomercial goes into detail on KS private label liquor and wine products, including KS Macallan series, and the Vodka and bourbon products. The file is about 12M.

Is this deal case worthy? It's hard to decide how many bottles to buy when you have not tried it. Apparently you cannot return liquor in the state of California unless it's defective (what the guy at Trader Joe's told me).

I stopped by Trader Joes yesterday and bought the 18 year old Scotch for $25. Thought it was just ok and only picked up 2 bottles. Fairly smooth but not much else to note.
