I have both as well. Seems like I find android apps are scaled down versions of the iOS app. I can't find a unfiied email for example.

Unless I am completely missing what you mean by this, Android does this with the stock e-mail app (not the g-mail, but the standard e-mail app). Just add all of your accounts in.

Even if the stock email app is not enough (its more than enough for me!), you can get K-9 mail, which is pretty awesome too! So I don't understand how that guy says there's no unified email.

I would definitely get this over the ipad mini unless you are totally locked into the Apple world. The number of apps available is a pretty ridiculous bases for purchase. The real question is weather the apps or type of apps you are needing are available.

I purchased this in last FP...Adorama $239 with official nexus case. I am not impressed with this tablet. The touch sensitiveness is in accurate and also when you pich zoom it will take split seconds to get the text re focussed. Imagine an auto foucs camera not able to focus the image for split seconds. I have ipad at home and cant compare this in any manner. But what I like about this tablet is form factor and apps as good as apple. I would wait few months and look for a deal $100. any thing more its not worth.

The Nexus 7 has a better screen. It has a much more powerful processor. The fact that it runs android means it is much more customizable and flexible.

The open system easily allows for things like emulators, using xbox 360, PS3, and Wii controllers for games, Using USB OTG to connect lots of random stuff, and generally expand what is typically thought of as the role of a tablet.

The fact that google updates android and adds functionality pretty much constantly, rather than once a year, is a big plus too. This is a HUGE plus of having a google device rather than another android device where updates are much slower. And Apple only makes a major update once a year...

I think its a fair shake to say that many apps do not have a tablet specific layout YET. But.

1. With the exponential increase in sales of android tablets post Nexus 7, this will change. Fast.
2. Most of the graphically pretty android apps have a tablet version already.
3. The 7" screen makes most phone oriented apps look decent, as the real estate is not being stretched as much. I haven't come across any that are an unusuable pixelated mess yet.
4. Phones have increased their resolutions by quite a bit too, which again helps how non-tablet optimized android apps look. This isn't the IPAD 1 days where all the apps were made for a 480x320 non-retina I-phone resolution, then blown WAY up to 1024x768 (with a different aspect ratio to boot) on a screen with about 6 times the real-estate.

I rarely even notice that an app these days is not tablet specific.

I got one of these (actually two due to a return but the first was as it turns out not a BuyDig problem -- Asus put a 32GB sticker on the outside box for a 16GB model).

It's a good price, though we have technically seen better now. It's a wicked awesome tablet if you ask me, but I am used to my Nook Color and my dual boot CM9 (now CM10) HP Touchpad.

I have the Blurex case from Amazon. I know lots of people with iPads and varying cases for them. I have not seen a case I like better than the Blurex one no matter what tablet we're speaking of. The case props up the tablet very well. The fit and finish on the case isn't superb, but it is more than passable. Mine also came with an OTG cable, which is a nice bonus.

If you ask me, 7" tablets and 10" tablets are apples and oranges. A 10" tablet is better if you want to throw a bluetooth keyboard in front of it and work. It's probably better for a situation where you keep it mostly in one place if you're watching movies. A 7" tablet is so much better for lugging around everywhere, and I find it to be a very nice size for watching stuff given that what happens sometimes is that I have a half hour to spare between court cases and can actually easily lug this about to watch something I have on the tablet without internet connection (none at the courthouse). People also seem to prefer 7" as a form factor for e-reading.

For me, 7" is a much better size than 10".

I'm going to get the 16gb model for $160 + tax, doing the Chase Points for a Sears gift card. That makes the N7 16gb half the price of an iPad Mini 16gb

Have the same case, works great and in addition to the Screen protector, mine came with a usb adapter. Amazon has many choices with similar designs.

I personally find the 7" form factor (Nexus 7) to be a lot more useful than the 10" (HP Touchpad). Can easily hold with one hand, weighs less and is significantly less unwieldy.

Layout. Just because the app scales to fit the screen doesn't mean it's making the best use of the screen.

You also get 2% back in eBay bucks. Counting that tax difference you are really not saving a whole lot $249.99, here we are getting it for $229.99, that's 8% off. Counting cash back and eBay bucks it is 11% off. You are saving 20% with the Lands End card but you are paying 6-10% tax probably, so you save lets say 15% that way.

That's my breakdown, you will be a little better off but more hassle with Chase.

I just built a CM10 MicroSD for the one I'm giving my sister in law. I'm blown away. If I hadn't bought my own Nexus 7 already, I'd be making another one of these. The Nexus 7 is clearly more powerful, but the Nook Tablet is a stout little machine.

My Blurex case came with one (that I messed up and trashed -- I am not a screen protector guy).

Not many retailers are carrying the 16GB. And many of the ones that are still sell them for around $240. Google/Asus must not be reimbursing them for the price change? I don't know. The few places that do have it at $199(Staples,Walmart) charge tax/shipping or both. Better off getting the deal on the 32GB honestly.

It probably costs them maybe $150 (let's say) to build the 16 GB model right this second. The 32 GB model probably costs less than $10 more. It's just easier to discount the 32. If in the spring they refresh it by going to 32/64 at the 199/249 price points (and I'm not saying they will), you'll continue to see the deals come on the $249 one, I'd venture.

I have bought the Nexus twice already and both times I have scratched the silver edging which I thought was aluminum. Can't believe how fragile the plastic is. I have returned both and this time I'm buying a sleeve for it, maybe even a case to at least protect the faux aluminum edging. I will look into this MiniSuit.

I just installed the ADB drivers for android. Cmd prompt to unlock and then use a program to do the rest. its pretty simple if you know what you're doing and able to follow directions.

Now I can play mkv files on the nexus7 over the 32gb flashdrives. or ext hdd :) its awesome. its not a PC so dont expect it to be like one.

Exactly what I did. Don't regret it at all. It's been working like a champ. Touchpad was a great adventure but for me 7 inch is a nice size, actually 7.7 or 7.9 would be best for me like to toshiba excite tablet but I can live with 7.

I'm pretty sure I tried some apps and it was just the size of a phone screen or some others where the layout was retarded on a larger screen. It's true, there are apps developers have to go back to and optimize for tablets. I honestly forgot the names of the apps but I remember experiencing this.

Not really, there's no microSD slot. But there's ways to "increase" it with Google drive or hack it to add USB storage. Search Google.

then import to Nexus 7 to watch or stream the video directly.(Battery might be depleted faster unless you use a USB hub power to charge external hard drive) Delete to free up space in Nexus 7 if needed. That way you'll always have something to watch/read.

BTW - I'm interested because this is one of the reasons I prefer my Samsung 7" Tab2. I've only got 8GB of built in memory, but I've got a 64GB SDXC card in there right now that allows me to have constant access to almost everything. I can swap as many cards in/out as i want and have virtually unlimited memory without carrying a HD.

I hope Samsung stays in the 7" game and does an update to compete with Google (I'd settle for even 16Gb of main memory right now) because it's a great tablet. The SD card slot should be on all tablets IMO.

Nexus's screen sucks and it's not a "normal" tablet as it doesn't have microSD card slot - the same as Amazon's Kindle Fire they want you to be using and paying for their Cloud services not being able to expand the available storage on the tablet.

I haven't seen the new nooks yet, but they sounds good from many respects.

there's no perfect tablet. BN and Samsung may come closest with the SD card, but the nook needs to be rooted to get away from the BN imposition and limited internal memory restrictions. They originally only allowed 1GB of memory for user space, reserving the other 15GB for the OS and BN books only, but I think it's been increased to 4-5GB but perhaps you can tell us the exact amount.

There were also "store" and download restrictions. BTW - I have an older non-rooted nook.

They've been at this for a month or so. My guess is that they're getting them from Google at maybe $210 so this is still profit.

I would, but we've got a rooted Nook Color that does everything, and we use it daily. We had a second one, and I sold it on CL for $129 rooted. Guy was thrilled. I bought 8 iPad 3's at Meijer last month and made about $85 a piece on 6 of them. Giving the family one, and the parents the other one. I hate iOS, so I'll continue to use the NC, and probably go with a Nexus 7. Camera is important, as we do a lot of Skype. Nook Tablet has no camera, and although it's a lot faster than the NC, is no benefit without a camera. But I agree that for $100, you did it right.

I have a touch of buyer's remorse on the Nexus 7. The Nook Tablet is just that good. I ran Vellamo HTML5 benchmark on it, and it came out on top of the list. Yes, I mean it beat the Nexus 7. It beat the Transformer Infinity. It beat everything that has been benchmarked. It's an impressive little slate.

I remember playing with the N7 at Microcenter, and it was able to render city buildings on Google Earth quicker than my laptop. It blew me away. That is interesting though that you prefer the NT over the N7. I know the NC is very comfortable to hold. My son and I spent a few hours yesterday playing Lets Bowl 2. We earned the Big Lebowski Vegas ball. That game is worse than Jewels - you can't put it down. I bet it plays buttery smooth on the NT.

There are a ton of apps, but there are still a number of exclusive iPad apps like Vudu and Amazon Prime Instant videos off the top of my head. I say that as somebody who chose Android anyway.

Are some of you for real? A nook tablet with android rom runs/performs better than a Nexus 7?

If so what version/edition of the nook should I be looking for? Just like the new Nexus 7, there must be a better version but I don't keep up with nooks so I'm not sure. A link to the best one will suffice ;)

Quadrant, the N7 (3589) spanks the NT (2306). Antutu, the N7 (10531) also spanks the NT (7325). It's Vellamo HTML5 where the NT wins (1961 versus 1659 for the N7). I'm not saying the NT beats the N7, just that at $97 versus $230 I have buyers remorse a little bit.

This is the 2011 model of the Nook Tablet, which has been all over the place getting blown out. The HD models are locked down but supposedly do themselves have impressive specs. While TI is getting out of the ARM business for consumer, they have bestowed upon B&N and Amazon some pretty impressive hardware.

YMMV - but some are getting these and buying a Gift Card at K-Mart w/Lands End card from Chase and buying a Wal-Mart, Google Play or Amazon gift card if salesperson allows it in which case could miss paying Sales Tax also. Plus some Sears may not have Nexus in stock.

I got mine for $14.95 (purchased the used one which is new with a slight blemish on it, but didn't have any blemishes that I could see.)

I like it because you don't have to unclip the Nexus 7 to get it to the stand positions. And from what I've read, the clips from the Bluerex case (or other similar ones) will start wearing down after use and not hold the screen as securely.

Just get an OTG cable [amazon.com], USB Hub with SD card reader [amazon.com]. Pictures of it working here. (Runs mouse, keyboard, and USB pendrive at the same time) [androidcentral.com]

When I say optimized for it I mean as in taking advantage of the N7's resolution, not stretching to fit or having it retaining the mobile resolution with all the unused portions of the screen(black borders).

I think $230 is the typical price on this unit nowadays and it's been on sale at various sites for the last month and a half, maybe more. The only savings people are getting are the free shipping or avoiding taxes. Other than that, not much savings in my book. Probably next week you'll see a deal like this again.

As I mentioned in my previous post, I like it because you don't have to unclip the Nexus 7 to get it to the stand positions. And from what I've read, the clips from the Bluerex case (or other similar ones) will start wearing down after use and not hold the screen as securely. Poetic makes one like the Blurex...and there are other ones as well. One doesn't have the strap which I also read will make a dent in the screen protector when closed. Not a an issue if you don't have a screen protector of course. The Poetic slimline just better suits my preferences for a case. I wanted slim and less bulky. The two angles the poetic slim offers are perfect for what I use if for. The lower angle stand position is perfect for typing and reading. Not saying it's perfect by any stretch because you can read negative reviews on amazon as well. But it's the right one for me :)

Hope you find one that will work for you. I suggest you watch youtube videos of both type of cases. That really helped me make my decision.

Besides the B&N lockdown, having at least a front facing camera would also matter to some (I personally would want a rootable Andoid 7" tablet with front and rear cameras, microSD expansion, HDMI out, at least 1280 x 800 display. I bought a Nexus 7 because I'm tired of waiting for my "perfect" tablet to come out. Closest I've seen is the SmartQ X7, but buying an unknown Chinese device scares me too much).
