Comparison of white, silver and black editions of the GoPro Hero 3

With all these GoPro deals, the manufacturer might as well just cut the price of all models by $50 after the holiday season. If you're even the least bit savvy in comparison shopping, there's hardly any reason to be buying even the Black edition for more than $350, unless some bonus accessories are included.

colemanlee09 12-04-2012 01:29 AM

just to let you guys know, I purchased this from gander mid-november and it still hasn't been shipped. you can follow the other gandermountain thread and none of us have received it yet. wait will be quite a while.

Went ahead and purchased, though I already have silver. Will decide if I want to cancel later on this month >.>

Anyone thought about using one of these as a dashcam? I'm beginning to think a dashcam would be a worthwhile investment.

atlr 12-04-2012 05:04 AM

One review I read stated that the blue wifi indicator light blinks which makes the camera noticeable on the dash.

I've been thinking about doing as such for a while, but I'm sure there are some far cheaper cameras that can get the job done for less.

Meh, just pop it off when you stop somewhere, just like a radar detector. Besides, where I live, most people don't know what an iPad is.

What's the difference in this one and the silver edition that was posted over the weekend for over $100 less? Other than the obvious that it's silver and not black.

Why would they lower their sale price (which is selling by the bucket loads) just because certain retailers have coupons. Coupons only effect the retailer's bottom line, not gopro's. Only a small part of the population actively seek deals like these, so they would be leaving a huge chunk of money on the table if they cut prices across the board.

Let me know where you parked your car. I want to check it out how it looks in the dashboard. Just "checking" it out, nothing else ;)

And you'd think that since coupons only affect the retailer's profits (seeing as GoPro has already made their money once the product comes to the retailer), GoPro wouldn't have much issue with retailers pricing products as they see fit. However, I've run into more than a fair number of deals from retailers (MPGear and Tackle Warehouse are recent examples) in which the retailer was forced to cancel or add an exclusion to a coupon, due to the GoPro Defense Force telling them to stop the discount or cease being an authorized reseller.

Seems like GoPro is simply protecting the image of value for their products, which is probably just basic Business 101 sales strategy. Still, whenever I've seen this many freebies/discounts on something, it usually hints at a new model, updated version, etc.

Only thing that really puts ice on such an idea is that the GoPro Hero3 has barely been out for around 3 months.

mac5155 12-04-2012 08:07 AM

Can this Gander Mtn Q be used on anything? as in firearms? most retailers exclude firearms from any coupons.

teaberry 12-04-2012 08:15 AM

Wasn't there a deal that lasted 10min for Hero3 Black for like $290 or $280?

Halewafa 12-04-2012 08:20 AM

I also got in on this deal mid-November. Was $350 and got $28 pending on CB. Mine still hasn't shipped and I'm praying that it ships before the 18th. My card initially had a hold on it for a week and then they took it off. Got excited that they were finally going to ship it :(

HFandSons 12-04-2012 09:24 AM

I got in on this. Decided to add a few accessories to get to the 500 mark and take off 100..

I got
Black Edition 399
LCD Bacpac 79
Suction Cup 30

total was 510-100= 410 No tax and free ship to CA plus 8 percent off Total of $377

Sell the LCD for 75 on CL and the Suction for 25.. Im hoping to score this for about 277 when its all said and done

cheapest i've seen it is:
mikesbikes.com: $319 no TX tax free ship
gandermountain.com: $350 + TX tax free ship - mrr bates dot com 8% cb
sun and ski: $299.99 + TX tax B&M only
sports authority $299.99 + TX tax B&M only - sports authority $35 off $??? coupon - sports authority 5%(?) cb

ucbdeals 12-04-2012 09:57 AM

Gopros pricing policy is just like many other name brands that require a minimum/fixed advertised price. The coupon policy and subsequent policing of it are spelled out in the agreement with retailers if they want to be reseller . This not only protects go-pro (who also sells cameras directly), but it also protects the smaller shops who buy in lower volume and are at a disadvantage compared to chain stores who can operate on smaller profit margins.

None of which has anything to do with an across the board price cut

dubbedown 12-04-2012 10:47 AM

These make good dashcams in terms of quality, but mediocre dashcams in terms of convenience.
If you wanted to record a road trip or a track day or something like that it's great, but for a daily accident insurance cam, it's kindof a pain.

Namely, the recording doesn't loop or have an easy way to flag "events", so you have to check your card space and/or clear your video every time you go out. Also need to check the battery life or use the charging cable. The suction cup mount is also pretty bulky and gets in the way, unless you use a sticky mount.

The dedicated dash cams like the Blackvue will automatically record over old footage, have sensors to automatically save "events" such as sudden g changes, automatically turn off when you park, have long, thin charging cables intended to be tucked into the headliner, etc...

yankidank 12-04-2012 01:02 PM

For those of you considering using a GoPro as a dash cam, I suggest that you look for a cheaper alternative like the 808 #16 camera with a D lens [chucklohr.com] (wide angle), which can be had at 1/5 the price of the GoPro. The 808 cameras range from $40-50 USD and performs at nearly the same level when it comes to image quality from a GoPro.

Ooh, I stand corrected! I just found this in the Hero3 manual:

Quote:

Looping Video mode allows you to record a continuously looping video that
overwrites itself until you press the button to stop it. Looping Video is
not available if Protune mode is turned on.
I've only used the Hero and Hero2 so far (got shipping conf on my Hero3 Black today!) but I hadn't ready about that in the specs on the Hero3 until now...

Both the Black and the Silver (and the White) have wifi... the difference is mostly in the recording quality settings and the Black comes with a ~$80 remote... If you don't need wifi and want to save some money, you could go with a Hero2.

Comparison of Black, Silver, White Hero3 [gopro.com]

clarkkent06 12-04-2012 04:14 PM

The H3 black though, has new optics and a new processor. The Silver edition is pretty much the Hero 2 in a smaller box, but the hero 3 is completely redesigned. For ,e, the Black is easily worth an extra $100, seeing how the remote is $80 anyways. From what I've been reading, if you're using it as a mounted cam somewhere (like a helmet) it's good piece of mind to use the remote so you know for sure it's recording. If you reach up and press the button, you're kind of going by faith that it actually started without taking off your helmet. Kind of "piece of mind". I ordered mine from backcountry.com with 14% cb and free 2 day shipping (no tax) and it should be at my folk's place today

unless you're in/on a car/bike this thing is loud as FOCK. i was trying to play with it at work and people were like WTF?

clarkkent06 12-04-2012 04:17 PM

The remote is?

tsy87 12-04-2012 04:24 PM

for those of you who arent aware, they also have an app for android and ios that lets you do live view. This will probably satisfy most peoples need for the LCD bac and even more like when you mount it somewhere that you cannot see the back of it, the lcdbac is useless.

The app is pretty slick. I currently use it with my 2 with the wifibac.

i use the Gopro 2 as a dashcam and dont have any problems with it getting in the way. i just installed a flat mount behind the rearview mirror and i can barely see it. and it's easy to remove the camera from the mount so just remove it when you're not using it. as far as looping, it's really not a problem for me, and if i'm not mistaken, the gopro 3 has a feature to enable looping. also the camera tells you on the lcd how much recording time you have left and it doesn't take too long to format the memory if you need to.

i took a few quick pictures to show you what it looks like. theres a lot of reflections from the trees (and my windows are really dirty) but you get the idea.

Looks like a good setup!

Yeah, I use my HeroHD in the car occasionally, and on my motorcycle pretty much every time I ride (daily about half the year). I do it, and it works, I was just trying to point out if you are looking for a dashcam, the dedicated ones have a form factor and features that make them more appealing. Just like if you are looking for a photo camera, sure the GoPro takes nice photos, but for the price there are much better cameras that are more appropriate for that task.

That is not an acceptable argument to factor into pricematching since you're expected to pay a 'use tax', regardless of whether or not you actually do.

Update - they might get a shipment in tomorrow. No guarantee though. Kind of disappointing considering they advertised that it would be in stock on 12/18. CS rep also said no guarantee that this will arrive before Christmas.

Bummer.

Update: My order is marked as shipped! Black edition is on its way. I haven't received an email but my account shows shipped. I also ordered a lcd bacpac and suction cup that shipped separately. I received those items already.

Also. I had regular ground shipping but they seem to have fedex 2 dayed it to me. Way to go GanderMountain. They definitely put the customer first on that one to make sure we had them by Christmas.

According to Amazon customer reviews, it seems that it has alot of buggy issues

I've had my black edition for about 2 weeks from a different site. It is pretty awesome. I haven't been able to get it in the water yet but I will soon.

The only issue I've had is that once when it was charging it locked up (the red light was on even when unplugging it) so I had to pull the battery out and replace it, and it was fine. Happened once

Just received it! Got an email on the 18th or so saying it will be delivered on the 24th, Christmas came early:)

Now just wondering if FW cash went through.

GUESS WHAT!

These mofos charged me and my friends credit cards the original price instead of the discounted price.

Just checked my credit card, I emailed them about it. Hopefully they will refund, otherwise it's getting disputed !!

Good thing I have the email confirmation to show to my credit card company which shows the discounted amount.
