guysguysguysguys this is used!
guysguysguysguys it says sold out!

I'm joking :P But I'm surprised this hasn't been said yet.
This seems like a pretty good price compared to the going used price elsewhere. [amazon.com]

The only problem with the rating system is the unknown factor on the hours on the lamp. Anyone have any previous experience with projectors from cowboom?

I know. It's a first! Maybe the oblivious actually learned something! It's not like there aren't CowBoom threads EVERY DAY.

It's a LED / Laser hybrid so unless they used a substantial amount in the last 2-3 years this projector came out then it should still have quite a lot of life in it

atldragonz 12-05-2012 10:21 PM

dammit i have to pass because its not WXGA

They do list the hours of use normally but that can't be seen with Deal of the Day. I'm going to go with a 6 and hope that has something to do with the hours, not just physical condition. I didn't look at the listings enough prior to this going live. Some had no hours, others had a few hundred. But even then there's a lot of life left. I can't imagine with these being demos/returns that they'd have much on them. People like to buy projectors, use them for a presentation and return them. Sad fact.

laphroaigh 12-05-2012 10:23 PM

Is this good for movies or just presentations?

surgek2007 12-05-2012 10:29 PM

Seems like you cannot replace the lamp in this projector. It's supposedly good for up to 20,000 hours and then the entire projector needs to be replaced or sent into Casio for repair. Casio does not sell the lamp for this device.

I don't see why not on movies or gaming. I have a friend who did this kind of setup, and this projector is HDMI and 1080p.

DLP lamps have a life in hours, whether it is a TV or whatever. I remember when our TV lamp died, cost a few hundred and man it was a bitch to swap out. That lasted a couple of years though, 10,000 hours.

It supports 1080p input, but can't output to that, correct?

Hmm. Pretty risky.

Manufacturer: Casio, Inc.
Category: Casio, Inc. home theater projectors

It's a discontinued product released two years ago. What's the chances of the lamp lasting for very long? :(

Assuming it was used 8hrs a day for past 2 years. That would be 8x365x2=5840 hours or just over 1/4 of its life used. Even then it would have a quite a lot of use left on it.

JDMKidBill 12-05-2012 11:12 PM

Note how it says UP TO 20,000 hours... That's the top end of a bell distribution curve...

Resolution is max 1600 x 1200, 4:3 aspect ratio (throw ratio 1.4 - 2.8:1). This is XGA (1024 x 768), not HD like some of the new LED projectors that are HD (1920 x 1080). I found this regarding the lumens (2500) and contrast ratio (1800:1):

Brightness in Ambient Light
Dedicated home theaters 1000 lumens or brighter
Rooms with some ambient light 1500 lumens or brighter
Spaces with high ambient light 3000 lumens or brighter
Brightness for Screen Size
50-60 inch 1000 lumens or brighter
60-80 inch 1500 lumens or brighter
80-100 inch 2000 lumens or brighter
100 inches + 2500 lumens or brighter
Contrast Ratio for Gaming Projectors
For the best image in a gaming projector, pay close attention to contrast ratios. Many of the most popular games include high dynamic color ranges allowing for very dark moments of game play. Higher contrast ratios present those shadowy scenes with greater clarity and visual acuity. In fact, a high contrast ratio often gives you a brighter looking image.
Contrast Ratios for Gaming
Good 5,000:1 or better
Better 40,000:1 or better
Best 100,000:1 or better

I used Cowboom watcher plug-in to add the projector in my cart, it let me select from many projectors of their inventory. Many projectors have notes said "0 HOURS OF OPERATING TIME". Looks like a factory refurb to me.

LED projectors have non-removable engine/bulb. The life expectancy is at least 7 years, in general LED lasts longer than the crystal TV panel of a TV for example....

So lucky to find this deal. Thanks OP!

Happygwailo 12-06-2012 12:03 AM

From the review on projector central this has poor color rendition, 40% lower than stated light output and is more suited for data than home theater. Also has pretty severe rainbow effect. On the plus side long lamp life, can shut it off within 2 sec of powering down, no screen door effect and of course a great price...

Install the plug in, close the browser and then open it again.
It will do its magic and show you a list you can pick your item from...
Hope that helps...

BTW. On the list in my browser window, there was only one with 2 hours.
The rest had condition 7 with 0h.

samvillian 12-06-2012 01:24 AM

1. Open Chrome Browser, if you do not have it installed like I did, find a cpu that does or install it.

2. Google the term "Cowboom Watcher" (with google) and it will be the first link, add that plugin to chrome

3. After you installed the plugin, just click the plugin (top right) of your chrome browser, and click on the product. It should bring you to the website cowboom.com and will automatically bring up a lot of choices for you. Some will say 0 operating hours, some say 2 hours of operation, some don't say anything (avoid those?). Best condition I found was 7although I must admit I didn't go through all of them. There were at least 15 pages or more if I remember correctly.

Hope that helps.

samvillian 12-06-2012 01:28 AM

just as a reference for later on research ;)

they have 33 pages of product right now. 34 if you count the $550 ones, which i'm assuming is what they were selling it at before the sale. half price. It seems to be 11 per page unless i can't count so about 350-400 units being sold. Lets see how they do in the morning.

samvillian 12-06-2012 01:39 AM

btw... i say this goes front page... its front page caliber for damn sure.

collin 12-06-2012 02:19 AM

here's a paragraph from http://www.projectorreviews.com/c...ummary.php

Quote:

Update: Since the time we initially reviewed and measured the A140 and then the A130 (see the Performance page), it has come to light that a number of these Casio GreenSlim (LED/laser light source) projectors like the A140 have been measuring unacceptably low. This has been confirmed from several sources, including Casio. Since that was discovered, Casio says it has identified and corrected the mirror alignment problem they say was responsible. Meantime I have still another A140 here, which measures low. It is one of the older projectors however. I'm working to locate a couple of random projectors from the latest shipment, to confirm Casio's assertion. Assuming the problem is rectified, the XJ-A140 remains the excellent projector that caused us to give it a Best In Classroom - RunnerUp award. I will update, hopefully shortly, when I am confident Casio has this situation rectified. 6-27-10 -art
Earlier in the review they test another Casio projector and find this:

Quote:

When I began evaluating the Casio XJ-A140's brightness I noticed that brightness levels were half of what the specs reported. Thinking this was a bit odd since most projectors are only off by about 20-30 percent we decided to contact Casio and see if there might be something wrong with the projector.

Casio sent us out the only projector they had available which was the XJ-A130. We felt that this was definitely an acceptable way to tell if this might be an isolated incident. They both use the same light engine which is the Hybrid Laser LED technology. The only difference was the lumen output. The XJ-A140 being 2500 lumens in the specs and the XJ-A130 being 2000. So essentially a 25 percent difference according to the specs.

When we tested the XJ-A130 we discovered that it produced 1857 lumens in its brightest mode. With that we could obviously see that the original XJ-A140 that we received was truly defective since measurements in bright mode were ranging right around 840 lumens. So from this we could deduct that the XJ-A140 having the same technology should produce about another 25 percent more brightness above the 1857 we got from the XJ-A130.

So the brightness levels in the various color modes and brightness modes measured out to be pretty good. Keep in mind we are estimating how the XJ-A140 performs based on the XJ-A130 results. In Standard Mode the XJ-A140 produced 2321 lumens. When we kept the Standard Mode but put the Casion in what is known as ECO Mode 1 the brightness fell to 1776 lumens. The Casio also has ECO Mode 2 which drops the brightness even more to 1143 lumens.
This probably explains why all these projectors are being blown out at Cowboom. I'd suspect that these are units with the mirror problem that either (Good news) got fixed and now are being resold or (Bad news) they didn't bother fixing and are just blowing them out.

ronf119 12-06-2012 02:42 AM

Try shipping a projector from the east coast to the west coast for free. Then you wont complain about $5 shipping.

frahnk 12-06-2012 03:10 AM

How does this compare to the LG PA70G that's $400 at Fry's? That one is full LED and has 30k bulb life but only 700 lumens (which I believed was the highest lumens for an LED projector). However, the PA70G doesn't have zoom, does this one have zoom?

Everywhere that I've read it states that it can do full 1080p... and even scale up to 1600x1200
http://www.projectorcentral.com/C...J-A140.htm

but I am curious as to how native resolution versus scaled would actually look like.

I agree. I think it would be fun to play with but if you wanted to get serious and set it up in a home theater it wouldn't really be suited for that. Here's a review that pretty much says the same:

http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/i...c=102171.0

frd1963 12-06-2012 04:22 AM

I have a similar model (Casio XJ-A240) which is rated at the same brightness and contrast but WXGA (1280*800) resolution. I can say that for a moderately dim room and a basic white wall, the brightness and contrast are good for watching movies and gaming. This serves as my family TV projecting a 12' image. Better than a 3300 Lumen DLP projector I was using previously. The best features though, are the powered zoom and focus. The zoom range is 2X and both are controllable from the remote. Anyone with experience with consumer grade projectors knows that powered optical zoom is unheard of in this price range. Same for focus. Another nice aspect is not waiting for warm-up or cool down.

If this sale were for a widescreen model like mine, I would definitely buy it myself as a replacement when my projector dies (1.5 years running 4-5 hours/day so far.)

How do you check how many hours?

demori 12-06-2012 06:06 AM

How did you see how many hours are on it? I pulled on a 5, but it only says:
"Some scratches and/or signs of use"

sincerity 12-06-2012 06:07 AM

some say it and some don't...gotta keep searching..it'll be in a "note" above the item desc

Hope that helps.

what I referenced

deshwasi 12-06-2012 06:17 AM

i see. so should i now cancel the "7" i ordered and go for the "6" with 0 hrs. there seem to be many with 0 hrs.

sincerity 12-06-2012 06:24 AM

not sure....was worth it for me...I don't care if there are a few more scratches....the bulb life is the most important thing on these imo. That being said seems like it's a crapshoot.

+1

I bought a 6 with 0 hours. There are many 7's left, but I didn't see any with a note of 0 hours. I didn't look very hard either.... 17 pages

I would go with o Hrs as that what defines this gadget.

avengeyou 12-06-2012 06:51 AM

I just purchased an Epson EX5200 from Tigerdirect a few days back, and the projector is expected to be delivered today. Any one have any suggestions as to keep the EX5200 (not sure if i can return the projector if its opened?), or to order this Casio Projector?

Thank you!

kakashi 12-06-2012 06:54 AM

So I pulled the trigger on a 6 with 0 hours but I just realized something. Is there an audio out on this? I mean if I connect it to my computer its okay but If i want to connect a roku or an android stick I really don't want to use the crappy 1w speaker.
Edit: you can do audio out through the av port I believe its right next to the vga spot.My new question is does any one know of a good rca to vga cable I can buy? The ones on amazon look kinda bad..

matticusn 12-06-2012 06:55 AM

Guys, chrome plugin is SO easy to use. Highly recommend it for now and future cowboom deals. Let's you pick from a variety of refurbished units. I chose one that stated 0 hours lamp life. There are a lot that don't have it listed but many do.

TanyainHawai 12-06-2012 07:02 AM

Looks like has hdmi in...which means you could hoook any hdmi source up

any recommendations for a screen? I have a fairly dark bar/man cave room I want to put this in, but no whilte wall....monoprice has soooooo many screens it's hard to decide. A motorized one would be BOSS.

Arrow34 12-06-2012 07:18 AM

Thanks selma! I am in for one, even though I have a projector... it doesnt have hdmi and is twice the size of this one. I think this will be a good home theater projector for the next year or so... If I dont want to keep it, I can always craiglist it

Is this projector capable of handling 1080P/Blueray player output via HDMI?

matticusn 12-06-2012 07:39 AM

Will a standard ceiling mount work with this? Wasn't thinking about that when I ordered one.

How long does it take cowboom to ship things? I will leave for Christmas break around the 20th do you guys think it'll come in time?

bddoan 12-06-2012 09:04 AM

Thanks OP, spent the last hour refreshing and ended up finding a 7 / 0 hour, pulled the trigger :) If nothing else, can at least harvest the diodes at $35 a pop (there are 24 of them in the housing).

Gotcha, I thought Cowboom just re-sold customer returns, didn't realize they refurbished items before selling them. Thanks!

It'll probably take them 2-4 days to get it moving, then 7 days after that it should get to you. That's been my experience from the Chino, CA warehouse. I'm in Florida though, so depending on your location, the 7 days may vary.

zen313 12-06-2012 09:30 AM

So tempted to buy a third. No idea why. Anyone know why Cowboom says sold out, but the plug-in still finds available ones? Is the plug-in wrong, and showing items that have been already sold? Would suck if all the ones we find on the plug-in have actually been reserved and sold already while the site still had them in stock....

I'm thinking about getting a second one for myself and selling my other one (q-7 0 hours) How bad do you think a 5 with 0 hours is? I figured if it was 0 hours then it had to be refurbished right? I honestly wont be looking at my projector so some scratches wouldn't bother me. I just don't want the lens to be scratched.. Thanks all for the help!

matticusn 12-06-2012 11:07 AM

Chino's distribution center takes a while after the UPS tracking is generated. Usually 1-2 days to actually hand it over to UPS.

Not That I can figure out.

When I click on the bomb icon, I get the popup window on the top right, that shows the Blu-Ray on top and the projector right below it. When I click on the projector, that window goes away, and it goes to the DOTD page which of course is now the Blu-Ray, but another popup window opens from the top left with all the individual projectors and the grade numbers and descriptions.

Not sure why it's showing for me and not you all. Using Chrome Version 23.0.1271.95 downloaded today, along with the plugin Cowboom Watcher 0.40

i think it may be because they never saw the projector to begin with. I'm seeing what you're seeing... and I may purchase another one.

viju84 12-06-2012 02:37 PM

placed it now.. use the plugin and add to cart..

mvx090 12-06-2012 02:41 PM

When I right click on the popup window on the top right and inspect element I can see this url. http://www.dpbolvw.net/click-5594...ID=1148169

Do you think if one of the people who can see the projector in their popup window tried it would have something similar?

rlhh 12-06-2012 02:41 PM

Cause the plugin is letting you buy from the None-Deal of the Day stockpile.

Most of the time they'll be priced slightly higher.

Yeah I clicked off the page with the projector in order to get the plug-in. Came back and all I get is the Blu-Ray player.

Guess I missed it. This would have been a good secondary PJ just for TV. Oh well.

LooksGood2Me 12-07-2012 05:47 AM

Mine is still pending too, and yes I used the chrome plugin

avengeyou 12-07-2012 06:13 AM

Im wondering if it caused an issue in our orders (those who used the chrome plug in), since it shows that we have a credit balance with Cowboom:

"Total Invoice Amount: $241.36 (including S&H and applicable TAXES)
Total Payments Received: $246.71
*Balance Left to Pay: ($5.35)"

Anyone else?

matticusn 12-07-2012 06:54 AM

Can anyone recommend a good Slick Deal audio system to go with this?

maxxve 12-07-2012 07:05 AM

My Paypal payment went through and pulled money out of my account. Cowboom still shows pending status though... Ordered using the chrome plugin around 1pm ET.

matticusn 12-07-2012 07:34 AM

My status on my bank account still says pending, but I went to chat with cowboom's live support and they had this to say:

"I show that the payment has been made for this item and will be shipped out within the next 1 to 2 business days. You will be receiving a confirmation tracking number when it has been picked up."

So even if it says pending in your bank acct it's still probably fine. I ordered with the Chrome extension a little before 10am yesterday. Didn't create a cowboom account so I can't check my status from their end, only through their support.

This projectors native a/r is 4:3. Not sure how it would effect it by attempting to project in 16:9. Can anyone chime in?

I've tried finding out the same and unfortunately most of the videos about this projector are of people burning random things with the lasers and not a review. I did find several sites that listed the projector capable of handling 16:9 though.

On another note, like somebody else mentioned earlier in the thread I too received a refund of just over $5 via paypal for this projector. I'm not sure why but it makes the deal even more slick.

samvillian 12-10-2012 01:21 PM

yeah idk why i got $5 either. Maybe because the price that the cowboom watcher thing was giving was $5 more than the daily deal, so they refunded it.

I'm jealous because mine won't arrive until Friday. A few people have been asking, can you comment on playback of 16:9 aspect ratio movies? Does it just crop the top and bottom? How does it look?

Thanks!

I've tried this on my laptop at 1600X900 and don't see a crop on the top and bottom. I would like to try the 16:9 aspect ratio for movies, but I don't have any movies on me to try. Sorry :( I can try later at home if I have time.

oliverredfox 12-10-2012 02:47 PM

I'm going to need to ceiling mount it. Anyone know if it uses a standard 4 (or 3) prong mount or does it need an adapter plate?

oliverredfox 12-10-2012 05:37 PM

Just got mine in. It came in a factory box fully sealed with zero hours on the unit. Remote, manual, etc were all factory sealed. It was either brand new or a really good refurb, either way I'm happy.

It auto-adjusted the aspect ratio to 16:9 off the Blu-ray players output (no bars or anything, just adjusts the image range that the DLP chip shows). Looks pretty nice.

There are 3 small holes on the bottom but they seems really small for ceiling mounts but they might be, gonna have to search around on it.

Nice! Congrats on that great buy. If possible, could you post some pictures of the images projected?

Thank you!

The image quality via my phones camera is lacking (it seemed to mess with the focus some trying to photograph it - it's much sharper in real life). It's running at 79" (47" TV next to it). Both with the light on and off in the room. I notice occasional rainbowing but nothing excessive. The lumen output on it is quite nice. You should be happy with it. =)

ofacto 12-10-2012 10:35 PM

Mine was delivered today. Grade 7. Came in the retail box, the box was opened but everything looked brand new and fully wrapped. I suspect these were new items and they just opened the boxes to take pictures and verify the contents. Overall I am very satisfied with this purchase, but I knew I should have bought an extra one.

Arrow34 12-11-2012 06:43 AM

Mine should be coming today, I will be projecting onto a white wall(which i will be painting with a screen mixture later... once i research the color) and I will take pics tonight of a blu-ray playing.

Update... actually they changed my delivery! Friday for me also :(

slapwootod 12-11-2012 09:22 AM

I ordered 2 of them. They should both be here today. I wish every time there was a phenomenal deal like this (this one far surpasses any slickdeal I've come across) that some smart user would instant message me so I can be sure to get in on another one. Wow! Thanks to those who posted about receiving theirs.

crazycreations 12-11-2012 01:07 PM

thank you for posting your pictures. Too bad i don't have nice flat & smooth white walls.

Arrow34 12-11-2012 01:11 PM

Interesting, I had assumed that 16:9 was not a problem and after reading some reviews, some were bad mouthing the projector like it wasnt able to get the aspect ratio right... kind of strange. For those that have the projector, how sharp is an hdmi/hd blu-ray source? Soem reviews had said taht it was being scaled to 1024x768 resolution from 720p/1080? From what I had read it was going to scale it back. But would like to know from the ones that have it...

The Blu-ray I watched last night looked lovely. The native output is 1024x768, but it does a good job down scaling from the 1080p signal it was getting. Obviously there are some pixels lost as a result but very viewable and the huge screen size more than makes up for it to me. There will be times I still want to use my small TV (hah, it's funny calling 47" small now) like when I want the extra detail of real 1080p or 3D but I expect I'll be using this projector for the majority of my daily viewing now.

Xspenceve 12-11-2012 04:18 PM

Anyone pick up an extra they are willing to part with for a small profit?

crazycreations 12-11-2012 07:40 PM

Got mine, I must say, it is better than I expected. But still not HD quality. Then again, I can't really judge a lot considering that my walls aren't even white and smooth.

It didn't say how many hours was logged when I bought mine. When I powered it on, it says 0 hours. :-)

BTW anybody getting a small buzzing noise beside the fan noise?

atldragonz 12-11-2012 08:12 PM

I don't know why mine is so noisy. It also runs pretty hot. This is all on ECO 2. Anyone have similar problems ? The remote control is also pretty hard to use. I need to point it directly at the projector. I hope mine doesn't have any defect. This projector is awesome

sounds normal to me. yeah the remote isn't as responsive as i'd like. it is kinda hot.

i'd suggest putting it on a fan thing (like a laptop fan pad, idk what they're called)... unless you mount it.

but i doubt the heat will cause anything, the fan seems to be more than capable.

anybody know how can I get it to display the UXGA 1600 x 1200 pixels resolution?

Mine has shown departed from the California location for a couple days now. No update of arrival at another facility.

Same here, but mine shows an arrival scan of today in my city/state. Previous to that scan, there was no other scan except for when it was processed in CA.

You could try using a computer that can output to that res and see how it looks. Still will have some compression, but that is the max res. That is what I am going to do when I get it on friday.

Got mine yesterday, and couldnt resist to test it into the late hours of the night!

This thing is so small and compact, about the size of a large textbook and with similar dimensions of a 13-14 inch laptop

Similar to above, my grade 7 came with
VGA cable,
audio RCA cable,
and remote w batteries that all was wrapped and looked brand new.

Also, although it indicated a case was not included, it came with it anyway!
Got some unboxing fotos i will post later. It was in great condition with no significant scratches or scuffs visible, but had a little bit of dust visible under the lens.

I really had to tweak the image quality and play with the settings before I got a really nice picture, so everyone that is having doubts you might need to try adjusting the brightness/contrast levels.

Great first projector and overall amazing deal. How did this not make front page when it hit?

-A Chinese Ghost Story (2011)

I got it to display /w compressed resolution. I must say, its best to leave it in native resolution.

I think there probably wasn't enough quantity to get on the front page.

One of the few deals I was almost bit by the "flipper" bug. I had the purchasing power to buy at least 20 or so... but balked. Received my two today. This will make a great setup for our audio video DJ setups.

Strangely enough... I received one labelled XJ-A140V, and the other labelled XJ-A140. Will have to inspect further.

Just got my projector it was a 6 and it looks perfect with a nice bright image even with a lamp on. Although my first projector was a 20 lumen pico projector so almost anything is brighter haha. It's a bit loud and I do hear a buzzing kinda noise but it's quiet and I can block it out by turning up the sound a bit.

snartfan 12-14-2012 12:15 PM

FYI- It's available again but $332.49 FS AC.. I posted a new thread in "Hot Deals"

The funny thing about the buzzing noise is that, as soon as I pull my hoodie over, the buzzing noise stopped while the volume remain loud and clear as before. I repeated this over and over to make sure it wasn't just a mind trick. I hope it works for u too.

Just had my first night with the Projector! Watched about half of Dark Knight Rises before realizing how long it was so I saved the rest for next week. Mom and Dad love it. We got a swing seat set up for two of us plus an extra chair. We have room for 20 people if needed or more.

Here it is: We expanded the projector image a foot or so past the screen on each side, ended up being 115" approximately -- we measured after we took everything down with an estimate of where the screen was.

This thing has PLENTY of lumen output for my use. At first I had the brightness cranked all the way up but we soon realized it was too much and put it down to about half.

This picture doesn't do the image justice, as I had the flash on. I have never owned another projector to compare this to, but I can tell you for damn sure that $250 for the projector and $75 for a RCA bluetooth-enabled sound bar plus a pull down shade attached under the overhang on our back work shop was definitely worth the experience of having our own backyard theater.

I give this deal an A and thank the OP for this big time. As well as the others who got me using the cowboom deal tracker.

It came with a case, remote, all the batteries, etc.

PS -- How can I find out how many hours are used on the projector? Didn't find that choice when I was messing with settings.

I bought a condition 6 and it was in nearly perfect condition. The projector box was smashed, but the projector was in mint condition ZERO hours. So far this projector is operating better than expected. I got a screen off craigslist and finally got my mini home theater together.

I have attached a shot in the dark and one with the lights on. I know crappy shots with my phone, i will take a few more with my slr if i get some time.

Any screen recommendation for this? I wan to get projector screen for this.

Platin465 12-17-2012 09:02 AM

Looks great on my ceiling, with lights on! Not as awesome in the day with windows open, but that was tried on a light tan wall. I'll have to take down my Plasma and the tv armoire and test it for a while, maybe put up a white sheet for a bit too. I think it may be a keeper! Hella loud on eco off, so I think I'll build a box and exhaust with fan to another room.

maxxve 12-17-2012 09:49 AM

I've been using it over the weekend on a tan wall as well and I've been very impressed. Running on ECO mode it's very viewable during the day with blinds shut on one or two windows. At night the lights can be on and it's more than bright enough. But dim the lights and put in a blu-ray at night and the thing is amazing.

I'm now looking into screen options as many others probably are as well. I think I'm going to go with a 4ft x 8ft sheet of foam insulation board from Home Depot or Lowes. They are less than $10 and I've got some flat white paint laying around to paint it with. The screen will hang in front of a 51" tv to be used for gaming and movies and then removed during the rest of the time so being light is important.

Is anyone else finding it hard to justify spending $100+ for a screen when the projector itself only cost $220??

I've had my screen for a long time, this is the 3rd projector I've used with it. Outside of moving to a new place and wanting a bigger screen, it won't get replaced. When you think of it as a long tern investment then it really isn't that expensive. The big advantage of a decent screen is that they improve image quality. There are some "theater paints" that offer similar gain but screens still tend to be better. ( http://www.projectorcentral.com/p...eens_a.htm )

sincerity 12-18-2012 04:54 AM

I ended up going with this:
http://www.amazon.com/FAVI-HD-100...tor+screen

It's still in the box as I haven't had time to mount, but reviews were mostly favorable and MUCH cheaper than monoprice which is usually my go to for this sort of thing. I finally figured out what I am going to use to mount the thing with last night (some 1/8" thick x 2" wide aluminum bar bent and holes drilled for mounting--ghetto but will save me 20 bucks or so) and got the screws from lowes. Hope to have it up by this weekend as I am off work next week and would like to watch bowl games. Next is to get the crt tv that is down there out and on craigslist! Should be able to get enough to reimburse myself for the screen

Hmmm... I was thinking of building a small box also and using some silent cpu fans to exhaust. I am just worried about heat buildup and powering the fans. I am fine with just the eco mode since my chosen location is dark or can be made dark during the day. Does anyone have an experience with build a box for ceiling mounted projectors?

I like your idea of using the foam insulation board! Seems portable and lightweight so adding and removing seems great! Are these boards easy to paint onto?

Thanks!

I haven't before, but there's a setting on this for when ceiling mounted, which flips the picture. I haven't looked, but maybe it has mount holes underneath. If so, you wouldn't have to build a box unless you're wanting to move the noise elsewhere.

I may have to use some sort of adhesion primer but I'm hoping that I can find a foam brand that paint will stick directly onto. I may find time to work on it this week and I will post pictures up of the end result and maybe some steps in between if I remember.

Because it will be so light you could even hang this on the wall with command strips. I'll be hanging it from a ceiling unless we want to use it full time and remove the TV from the wall.

There are 3 mounting holes on the bottom for a ceiling mount and they are metric M3 threads.

It all depends on what you're mounting it to. I'd say you probably need 20 or 30mm lengths.

Bought the cheapest ceiling mount [ebay.com] I could find on Ebay

This worked pretty good and comes with the right size screws for the Casio. I hacksawed the "arms" down so they wouldn't stick out but that wouldn't really be necessary.

4x8 Foam Insulation Screen

5 Attachment(s)
I know this thread is getting old and all of us are probably enjoying the projector but I wanted to post some pictures and details of the 4ft x 8ft insulation screen for those looking for a cheap quick screen.

I started with the pink 1" thick foam insulation. I used an eggshell white paint and applied 3 coats. The first picture is after just one coat. The latex paint covered and worked well on the insulation. The guys at Home Depot said this is actually the foam they use to make various painted signs around the store.

Then I went to Joann Fabric and picked up 2.5" black ribbon. 25 yds of this stuff was around $2.50 so it's dirt cheap and I also got some adhesive tape while I was there. Command strips hold this thing up it's so light and it's temporarily mounted to the ceiling with clamps.

The projector mount is a quick/easy/cheap solution with 1/4" sheet of MDF attached to the projector and a 2x6 in the ceiling beams (will be painted black but I was in a hurry to watch movies). Then it's connected with 1" black steel plumbing parts. The projector is easily leveled and adjusted with wing nuts and held in place with the help of compression springs.

I had the paint laying around along with the wood so all together the total for mount and screen was about $30. That brings the grand total of projector, screen and mount to $260. Definitely a VERY slick deal!

Take a look at the pictures and feel free to ask any questions.

Anybody having trouble with HDmi on this? It works well 1080i via DirecTV box...but won't display 480p on Sat,e box or ps3 doesn't display at all. Also Nexis 10 doesn't display via HDMI at all....any ideas?

Does anyone know how to setup this projector for 16:9 screen? I have connected it to my HTPC but with native 1024 x 768 resolution it goes out of my screen (82 inch x 45 inch = 92 inch diagonal).

Should I manual set the resolution to 1024 x 575 to get perfect fit?

When I turn mine on the image goes beyond my 16:9 screen as well. But as soon as a source is connected (PS3) it switches to 16:9 and fits the screen like it should.

FYI - I was able to resolve this issue by setting the resolution on HTPC as 1920 x 1080 with screen fit. I guess what this does is send the full 1080p signal thru HDMI to projector and let projector handle it.

in this case, your computer is rendering everything at 1920x1080 and then the projector scales it back down to 1024x576 for output. Depending on whether the scaling is better in the projector or the HTPC, there may be a difference in quality. If you are doing something like playing a game, you are making the computer work harder than it needs to since the extra resolution will just be thrown away. You could just set it to 720P (1280x720) which is closer to the projector's resolution, or if you can get 1024x576 that would be optimal for the projector. On the other hand, if you have 1080P video content sources, setting the res lower than that would make the computer scale the video down, which may heat up the CPU/GPU more than just playing the content straight as is.

Exactly... especially as my HTPC does not have dedicated GPU... I am using onboard video with Intel G550 porocessor.
